Two problems related to transmission noise have been reported for the 1998 Mercury Mystique. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving 20 mph heard a loud noise from under the hood. Vehicle started to slow down and would not respond to accelerator pedal. Dealer determined that transmission needed to be replaced.
The automatic transmission broke and needs to be fixed. Also, there is knocking noise coming from the vehicle.
