Three problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 1996 Mercury Sable. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving on highway at approx. 65-70 mph noticed engine check light and battery light coming on. Pulled over, turned off vehicle, and looked under hood. Noticed engine coolant overflowing onto ground. Tried to start vehicle, but engine would not start. Vehicle was inspected by dealer ,and informed consumer that engine had sucked up the water from the air filter which caused the engine head to crack. Can NHTSA help in this matter, and provide additional information.
The contact owns a 1996 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where unknown repairs were performed. The failure recurred however and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the same failure on numerous occasions. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000 and the current mileage was 49,000.
Check engine light appeared because engine failed resulting in over heating. Yh.
