The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Sable. The vehicle had the same failures as mentioned in the recall regarding 2000 Mercury Sables. The only difference was that the rear coil spring failed and punctured the tire while driving at 35 mph. An unusual noise was heard before the tire was punctured. Ford stated that nothing could be done because the recall applied only to the front coil springs. The service dealer replaced the failed springs with ones from the manufacturer, and stated that the noise was due to the muffler baffle. Also, the dealer mentioned that Ford was in the process of developing a different type of spring that has not yet been released. The current mileage is 39,798 , and failure mileage was 39,700. The consumer stated that the vehicle was taken to another dealer who then replaced the struts and that solved the problem. Updated 06/09/07.

The kost tire store told me that my right rear spring appeared to have been broken for some time, and the left rear spring had a crack in it, on my '02 Sable with 50k miles they informed me the car was a danger to drive, and that it needed new struts and springs. I returned it to the dealer immediately, and was told there was no known problem with springs on that year Sable. The dealer replaced both springs for $350, not covered under the Ford extended warranty, and informed me that there was no need to replace the struts. I picked up the car on July 6, and realized there was a further problem because of the loud rumbling going over bumps, and a loud bang when hitting a bump at highway speed. It went back to the dealer July 7, and they determined the struts needed replacing. By then, the car had bounced on the rear tire so much that it had two bulges and also had to be replaced.

This was a failure that fortunately was caught before a crash. I purchased the vehicle used last December. From the time I purchased it there was a clunking sound that came from under the front on the driver's side. At the end of September my husband noticed that the engine was moving back and forth (front to back) when the car would start out and back up. He continued to monitor it for a few days when it started to sound if it were whirring and grinding on the driver's side. He took it to a repair place, fisher auto body and repair in somerset. There they found the following, the front struts were bad, the driver side was leaking and had little function, the passenger side was weak; the front subframe assembly mount had rusted through and had seperated; the rear motor mount was defective and had to be replaced; the rear subframe assembly mounts needed to be replaced (to cure the clunking); the driver side wheel bearing had gone and needed to be replaced (to repair the whirring sound), plus strut mount, cushion, etc. The total cost of the repair was nearly $1600. Although I suspect the weak struts allowed the subframe to slam to the ground on hills or sharp gulleys which contributed to the front mounts breaking, they were clearly not designed to stand up in the long run. The same design was used on the 93 taurus for instance and you recalled the rear mounts and required a beefed up mounting plate and design. You should force Ford (Mercury) to do the same with this car.

My 2000 Mercury Sable LS premium blew out the left front tire. At the moment I put the car in reverse to exit my driveway. My husband proceeded to remove the flat tire and install the Mini-spare when he discovered the suspension strut coil spring had broken and penetrated the tire sidewall. I had the car towed to our Mercury dealer in essex, vermont where new struts/coil springs were installed plus a new tire. This spring failure could have had fatal consequences if it would have happened at highway speeds. The coil spring was obviously defective due to a manufacturing/design flaw.
While driving 25 mph left front coil spring failed, causing left front tire to puncture. Vehicle was unable to move. Vehicle was towed to dealer for analysis, and mechanic determined that the struts and coil springs needed to be replaced due to worn out parts.
