My 17 year old was driving the 2001 Mercury Sable and came to a complete stop at a light on a busy intersection however, the car automatically accelerated even with his foot on the brake. The acceleration stuck and fortunately he was able to control the vehicle without hitting anyone and causing an accident but immediately managed to get it to an open lot to shut the car off. Had someone look at it, and it was the throttle cable that snapped. It is only temporarily fixed at this time. Also, when driving in areas where there is any type of small bump, such as the end of our driveway, the front end suspension just isn't there. It hits extremely hard.

The engine cradle/frame supporting the engine & transmission and suspension and steering assemblies failed due to excessive corrosion causing the rear mount at the body connection on both sides to separate and drop about 3" causing a loss of steering. The drop of the cradle and engine and transmission pulled down on the steering shaft universal joint under the dash causing the steering to bind up and also causing the entire steering and suspension geometry to fail. The vehicle was not garaged, was purchased new by me, was not in involved in any flood damage, was not in close proximity to salt water and the undercarriage was sprayed each time I frequently washed the vechicle. The engine cradle in addition to the rear mount failure has extensive rust and corrosion thruout the structure. As someone who pays attention to my vehicle I began to notice rust/corrosion on the engine cradle about 5 years after purchasing the vehicle and have searched the internet for similar complaints without finding any. I'm wirtting this after finally seeing a complaint on a 2001 Ford taurus cradle/frame failure and think this dangerous condition should be made public. Thankfully I was going at a slow speed and was able to veer the vehicle to the side of the road. Had I been traveling at highway speed the event would have been catastrophic not only to me but others on the road also. Loved my vehicle it runs great and was looking foward to more miles with it, unfortunately the repair would be a major undertaking and expense and my Sable is to head to the junk yard on a flatbed.
I just bought a 2000 Mercury Sable, when backing out of the driveway and making a turn, I felt something pop & a spring coil on the drivers side broke.
My mechanic advised that the coil spring is lacking a cover and is rusting and may break. My transmission "slips" and "revs" at random. Both of these items are supposedly under recall, but Ford will not honor the recalls.
Driving along residential area, extremely loud bang with burning rubber smoke. Stopped in road looked under hood found nothing wrong. Tried to drive again and there was a bumping noise and more rubber smell and smoke. Repeat inspection determined that the drivers wheel clearance was dropped and rubbing on the wheel. Search of internet shows that springs are routinely breaking and causing injury and death.

My mechanic noticed that the rear spring was worn. This, he said, was cause for a recall in the front spring in 2005. However, there was no similar recall for rear spring. My mechanic said this part should not have worn out like this.
While vehicle was sitting unattended in a public parking lot the driverside coilover spring failed. The results was suspension and tire damage totaling the vehicle.
As I tried to pull forward from a parking spot, I noticed the vehicle would not hardly move forward, and a very loud groaning noise was present. I could not turn the wheel, and as I tried to back up, I heard a loud pop. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the left front tire had blown, and the left front sping was broken and sticking into the tire on the inside! the spring did not look rusty or excessively dirty.

I moved the car in my driveway and the left front spring broke and went through the tire sidewall. If this had happen at highway speed or even less the car could have gone off the road and rolled. I had the car towed and the truck driver told me this was a common problem. He said he ran into a couple time a month. I called Ford and they said there was no recall. I know the car is 11 years old, but it has very low miles and the spring had no rust it looked like new. This seems to be a serious safety issue please look into it.
Vehcile spring fractured breaking the bottom bottom part off the col spring on the front left drivers side of the car. The left front is now lower and tires show wear. I have stopped driving as a result.

I rotated the tires on my car in March and seen that both coil springs where broke .
The contact owns 2002 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked in a residential garage when he heard a loud explosion. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the strut spring was fractured and had punctured the front driver's side tire. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 95,000.
Backing up less than 5 mph--all at once heard a pop, the car stopped moving and whooshing air. Got out of car-- driver side front tire was flat. Upon further investigation, the spring had broken and punctured the tire. Luckily, it happened at home-- not when my student driver was driving at 55 mph or more. Over 2,400 cases reported as of June 30, 2011-- yet, no one has died or been seriously injured yet-- so no recall. If I had been on the road-- it would have been serious. The spring wedged into the tire and stopped the movement of the car-- no way would I have been able to steer and get the car off the road. I hope they reopen this investigation.
I was backing out of my garage when I immediately became aware the vehicle was not moving normally, the front drivers side tire was completely flat. When I was changing the tire I noticed the spring had broken and punctured and ruined the tire. This evidently happened while the car was parked in the garage as I heard no noise from the breaking spring or escaping air. I feel fortunate this happened in the garage and not at highway speeds.
Coil spring broke. It almost punctured the tire.
To whom it may concern: the left rear lower arm to body hinge bolt unscrewed (front location of rear lower arm) out of rear lower arrn (about 2 inches out from lower arm) visual sighting caught this item - rear axle could have disengaged from the vehicle if rear lower arm bolt had fallen completely out. Dealership reinstalled bolt.

Wife was driving with our 15 month old and 1 one the way when she heard this very loud clanking noise. It sounds like its coming from both wheel wells in the rear.
Something drastically wrong with the radiator system, antifreeze is always brown, have it changed and in 1 day it turns brown. The windows have been broken in this car since 2005, the two front windows do not go up and down, I don't feel safe without the windows working. There is something wrong with the suspension and I constantly have to put air into my tires and tires wear out quickly because suspension is messed up. Windshield washer has not worked since 2003. If it was built with pride like the company says it is, it would be a nice car. Falls apart too easily. I need help.
I have a 2009 merc Sable premiere, when I go over bumps in the road the struts bottom out, and the car like slides side ways. I took it to the dealer where I bought it and they looked on the internet and found that Ford says when driving over bumps the car will bottom out and this is normal. I told the service man that this was [xxx] and he said he could not replace the struts until they recall them. I asked how much it would cost to replace them myself and he said it would run $1000. To have all 4 replaced. Do people have to get killed before they will cover this? I still have warranty left on my car and I want it fixed. Thank you very much for your time. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Back springs both broke on 2002 Sable. . Had to get fixed to pass inspection. . . . . . In Jan 2009 front spring broke and punctured my left front tire. . I understand Ford had recalls or safety issues w/springs for 1999,2000,2001 & 2003 but not my 2002. . I have tried w/Ford to no avail for resolution with this issue to no avail. . . . I have read many complaints on internet for same exact problem I have had w/2002 vehicles. . How did Ford skip the 2002 models?.
2002 Mercury Sable LS premium, 64,000 miles. The springs broke in the front wheel assembly. Caused tire rip and cost $1,100 in repairs.
Spring on front of Sable broke ,it happens a lot on taurus and Sable since at least 1995. Wonder how many have been killed and injured?.
2001 Sable coolant light came on frequently. The coil springs make noise. The brake harness light was defective. All four tires needed air every week (dot numbers w2x8lh01802 and w2x8lh04102).
Problems with tire equipment deflating. While attempting to back out of a garage the vehicle would not move. The consumer then heard a tremendous noise followed by hissing. The consumer exited the vehicle and noticed that he driver's side front tire was deflated. It was later determined that the strut and spring had snapped puncturing the tire. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility to be repaired. The consumer requested reimbursement but was told that since the vehicle was not towed to a Ford dealer the parts could not be guaranteed.
The left front spring pierced the front tire, after it had broken in two while consumer was backing out of driveway, dealer found passenger spring, stablizer link, and strut bearing broken, both springs were replaced. Manufacturer notified.
The engine has a heavy spark knock and has been repaired 5 times. The driver seat does not move forward when someone is sitting in it. When car is first put in reverse, it will roll forward. When slowing from 60+ mph, the car shakes really bad and also rides very rough when speeding up from 65+mph. These cars seem to have a lot of engine, transaxle problems. Maybe a recall is in order. My car has been int he shop 60 out of 290 days. I have dealt with rental cars and repairs in excess of $20k. Please help!.
Consumer has problem with suspension. Vehicle sits so low to the ground that in snow like weather, brakes freeze up, and perform poorly until car is fully warmed up. Consumer now believes that her claims were too hasty and that all low riding cars have this problem, car simply is not suited for country driving conditions.
