During a rain shower, drove at about 15mph into roughly 4" of water gathered on the shoulder of an access road adjacent to the highway and the engine stalled. Would not restart. Puddle of water was not high enough to breach the cabin - running boards were still above water and the curb adjacent to the street was not submerged. Car would not start and transmission locked up. BMW roadside assistance contacted and advised not to start; tow truck had difficulty loading onto the flatbed because the electrical system had malfunctioned in the electric convertible top and was overriding the ability to put the car into neutral.

I have had previous issues with the panoramic sunroof, I had to get it replaced. Then I had issues with the chain and chain tensioner and had to get that replaced too. Now the steering has failed on me, I can't start the car or even move the steering wheel. My steering is locked now; I had the car running, everything seemed to run fine and the steering worked fine. Once I shut the car off I couldn't start the car back up and my steering locked up. I had to get my car towed home. I wish BMW would do some kind of a recall on this car so we wouldn't have to pay so much money out of our own pockets!.

The contact owns a 2005 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated the vehicle would not start. She contacted roadside assistance which jump-started the vehicle. The vehicle resumed normal operation. The failure recurred the next day and she was able to have the vehicle jump-started a second time. The dealer removed the battery and there was excessive water surrounding the battery box. The vehicle resumed normal operation for a while until the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the contact was informed that the battery was entirely encased in water and exhibited corrosion. In addition, the dealer advised that the bst cables and fuse assembly would need to be replaced. The dealer was unable to provide an explanation for the excessive water in the battery. The contact was concerned that if the vehicle was repaired, the failure would only continue to recur. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The current and failure mileages were 28,326.

Car will not start, leaving you stranded. Pushing in clutch then start button, and nothing. First time was 5 weeks ago, towed to dealer, did tests, found no problem. Happened again on 4/23/2009, giggled dead man switch on clutch pedal and then started. Happened again 4/27/2009, tried giggle thing, nothing this time. Sat overnight, then started. Only common factor has been on warm spring days around 90 degrees. Will be taking back to dealer.
