I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante LS with 66,000 mile and my heater core went out. I noticed my window would fog up and you can smell antifreeze in the car, to have this replaced is going to cost me almost $998. 00 for part and labor. Most mechanics I have talked to about this problem said that I shouldn't be having this problem with the heater core so early. I know of numerous complaints of this defect for this (none of which I knew about before I bought the car) I know that it is dangerous for the antifreeze to be inhaled, and with all the complaints about this obvious defect something should be done about it. There is health risks with the heater core going out and releasing the antifreeze not to mention the safety concerns with the heater core being so near important computer components.

For no particular reason my car fills up with the smell of anti-freeze coolant when I turn on the heater. I have read that this is caused by leaking 0-rings and that this will damage the computers which are underneath the leak. The car is a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante l. S. The dealer says it is not a common issue. Google says otherwise.
I noticed the smell of maple syrup about two weeks ago. Today, the inside windshield and side windows of the Diamante fogged up with a grease film that would not clear. I went to my local mobile 1 and had the coolant system flushed. When I drove off it was actually worse. It got to the point that I could not see. I have suffered severe headaches for the last two weeks as well as nausea. I immediately drove to my Mitsubishi dealer. After analysis, it was determined that the heater core went out. As well, an oil leak had formed and the timing belt was going bad. They said that coolant was leaking in the right passenger floor , I felt it and never once did it feel damp, and they needed to clean the carpet and replace the flux for $237. 00. The cost to repair the heater core and oil leak, $1300. 00. The timing belt repair is $700. 00. Thank god I bought the extended warranty. All but the timing belt is covered with a $100. 00 deductible. I only have 63,000 miles on this car. This is my fourth Mitsubishi and may possibly be my last, especially if my health is jeopardized.

Heater core failure.
When using the defroster the windows increasingly fog up and it does not clear. From investigating I have come to find out that this issue appears to be caused by a documented problem with the heater core of this model of of vehicle, 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante, in this case. I purchased the vehicle used from a local dealer approximately two weeks ago. I guess lucky for us the weather turned cold, forcing us to use the defroster, and thereby discovering this problem. I realize I most likely do not have any recourse in my case I want to file this on behalf of those who might since, as stated above, this is a known issue with the Diamante.
Car smells like coolant. Windows won't clear up while im driving. Very foggy. It happened when the heaterwas needed. The odor was making me nauseous and sick. Dealer said I needed a new heater core at 20,000 miles.
Foggy spots on front windshield, syrup like smell, and vapors blown through front vents. Heater core gasket leaked coolant fluid into car dripping on passenger side, found fluid underneath carpet. Mitsubishi dealership replaced heater core.
The contact owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante. The windows fogged up when the air and heat were activated. The passengers could smell antifreeze. The dealer stated that the heater core failed due to defective o-rings and noticed antifreeze leaking onto the micro processor. The micro processor and heater core were replaced. The failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 75,000.
Heater core problem. Window fog. Anti freeze smell in side of cabin. Extended warranty is not cover. Only 28800 miles 2002 Diamante.
Windows will not defrost and odor coming from vents. Also puddle of anti-freeze on passenger floor. Did not think problems where related but they are. Heater core gasket leaking and causing the problems. $1 gasket and $700+ labor. This is a scam from the dealership, exploit a unsafe defect and then charge an arm and a leg to get it fixed. Next they will charge for the air we breathe.
Leakage of antifreeze ( engine coolant) into the passenger compartment of vehicle. The coolant smell was apparent within the car.
Regular use. Failure causes an odor inside the vehicle and a film which inhibits visibility on the windshield.
Heater core issue with Mitsubishi Diamante 2003 summary: notice consistent and very noticeable foul odor when heater is on. . Fogging of front windshield. Have had this problem identified as consistent with heater cores issues by other Diamante owners who have had their car serviced at a Mitsubishi dealer. Have not replaced anything yet because the parts and labor quotes have been anywhere from $600-$1000. Car has 36,000 miles on it.
I noticed that the windshield was fogged, and the defroster would not clear the fog. Blamed it on the humid florida weather until one evening I was driving home from work and all of my windows were fogged. Had to keep wiping the windows with my hand in order to see out the window. Took the car to to be checked, and it was the heater core. This car is too new for the heater core to have gone bad.
Car cabin has strong odor of antifreeze when using the heater. Windows have difficulty DE-fogging and after contacting service department, was told that it would be over $1000 to fix. As I dug deeper into my problem, I found that I am not the only owner of my vehicle that has had this problem, and my repair forum had this link to file a report.
Defroster would not defrost the windows. The transmission keeps going in and out of gear. Was told the heater core has gone bad, which the transmission was going in and out because coolant was dripping on the relay that was underneath it. It is going to cost $500 dollars for the relay, the reset of the check engine and heater core. Then a additional $600 dollars for labor since they have to remove the entire dashboard.
Noticed anti-freeze smell within the vehicle. Windshield fogging up and heater was not working properly. Took to dealership and was told o-rings needed replaced. Advised work was completed, charged $652. 97, and the next day still experiencing the same problems. Contacted the dealership. They are going to investigate further.
Anti freeze odor is overwhelming in the car, especially when the heater is run. I have had the car since it was new, and had the same problem after only a couple of months. The dealership fixed the issue by installing a new gasket, but the fix has lasted only a couple of years. My wife and I have been having a variety of respiratory illnesses recently, and I believe these fumes are a contributing factor.
2002 Mitsubishi Diamante - heater core, bought used from mitsu dealer, found heater core hoses disconnected & bypassed. Evidence of past leak on/near ecu. $1000. 00 to repair at independent garage.
Windows were not clearing properly and smell of anti-freeze was very strong. Upon calling the Mitsubishi dealer, I was told, it's probably the heater core. I ask if this is normal for a car three years olds with approximately 45,000 miles. Dealer said they had seen a few. They haven't been much help yet.
2001 Mitsubishi Diamante with 44k miles - heater core failed and a few weeks later the transmission control device failed. This is due to leaking fluid from the heater core directly onto a computer component that has no cover. This vehicle should be recalled and Mitsubishi should pay for the repairs (about $2000).
Heater core in '02 Mitsubishi Diamante leaked causing windows to fog and anti-freeze to leak into passenger compartment.
Complaint description: noticed faint smell of anti freeze approximately 9 months ago. Had problems with defroster clearing windows. Also, seemed to get better (or maybe I got used to the smell). Now noticed passenger side floor carpet is soaked with anti freeze. Obviously a problem with the heater core or the hose(s) which connect to it are leaking. Car has 55000 miles, and is well maintained. I called local Mitsubishi dealer to schedule a repair. Hoping they can repair this at little or no cost to me as this is an obvious defect in parts or installation. All local Mitsubishi dealer said that this will cost we about $1200. I see alot of complaint of this type should this be a recall?.
Notice thick residue on front window and was not able to remove it with defogger. Notice lose of antifreeze which caused over heating and potential engine ceasing. Then noticed passenger side carpet was full of anti-freeze. After intense cleaning and attempts to fix the problem, it still emits a maple syrup anti freeze toxic fume.
2003 Mitsubishi Diamante with 65000 miles. Noticed fog coming out of vents around the radio. It smelled like anti-freeze and created a fog on my windows that was bad enough to render the car undriveable. I was also getting an error message of p-1751. This refers to a problem with the transmission relay control. I took the car to a transmission shop and after diagnosing for two days, the mechanic told me that he had discovered a leaking heater coil that may or may not have damaged the pcm. Worst case scenario, $1600. It will at least cost $500, best case scenario. I uncovered numerous complaints from Diamante owners with models from a wide range of years who were experiencing the same problems. This is criminal negligence and I personally request an investigation to research how mistubishi has been getting away with this, for so long. The same exact problems are occurring on a frequent basis.
I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Diamante with a failed heater core. Smelled antifreeze for awhile, then one evening, it was coming out of my air vents and fogging up my windshield - except it wasn't "fog" but antifreeze mist that would not go away, so I have to drive with my head out the window till I got it home and wiped it down. Apparently this is a very common problem, and I believe Mitsubishi is responsible for refunding my 800+ dollar shop bill for repairing this defect.
The car only has 63,000 miles. An antifreeze odor was noticed initially and began to intensify with time. When the defroster is running the windshield will fog up and the anti-freeze smell is so intense that it nauseates my wife and kids. I have also noticed that the carpet on the passenger side is damp. It appears that this is a very common problem with the Diamante due to a failure with the heater core and its connections.
Heater core leaking.
My wife and I noticed antifreeze odor coming in through vents. When our windows would fog, our defroster wouldn't work. Then our passenger side floor was soaked with antifreeze. We took the car to the dealer, our heater core was leaking. Cost was $1300 to repair. Mitsubishi should be held responsible!! too many complaints.
Leaking antifreeze into the passenger compartment. Fogged windows, with a near miss on highway before I could get off.
2002 Mitsubishi Diamante purchased from wallace Mitsubishi in kingsport TN. In July 2006. Mileage 45000 miles. Foul odor from vents, windows fogged with greasy film, impossible to see through windows. Garage mechanic determined the cause to be heater core malfunction. Repairs to cost between $700. 00 to $800. 00 . I'm not the only one with this problem. The should be a recall.
I noticed a maple-syrup type smell and fog coming out of the vents even when off. Upon investigation, coolant was found leaking onto drivers' side floor. Was told by garage that it was the heater core and it will cost $800 to repair. Was also told that if it's not repaired it could damage the computer. I will have to get it fixed soon as my son has asthma and breathing in antifreeze vapors is probably not a good thing.
Recently purchased a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante with 62k miles. Admittedly, I am not car "savvy" related to the well being of the car. When purchased, the car had a "maple syrup" type smell. Also, the windows fogged up very quickly and eventually I realized the heat took a long time to warm up. As I purchased the car in the summer, the fogging and heat problem was not noticed for two months. I have now realized that the problem has to do with the heater core. I have talked to people who are car "savy" and they say cars shouldn't have problems with a heater core until late in their lives (above 120k miles), if ever. As I discovered my problem, I realize that I have been inhaling anti freeze gas through the heat vents. I'm worried that I will have respiratory problems because of this. Has Mitsubishi taken responsibility for this severe mishap? I have researched and found that this is an extremely prevalent problem in most Diamantes. Not only is this extremely detrimental to ones health, it's an expensive fix. Is there any hope for a recall here?.
