The problem began in may. While it was raining and the owner was trying to make a left turn, the steering wheel tightened up. The owner had to stop the car and turn the wheel really hard to turn. It felt like the car did not have power steering. The problem happened mostly in the rain. The owner took the car to the dealership, and they will repair it, but it will cost the owner. There was recall 00v225000 but the owner's vehicle was not included. The owner contacted mittsubishi, but they won't do anything since there is no recall on this car. The owner will have it repaired tomorrow. Also, had problems with the windshield wipers. This began last month. The windshield wipers worked just fine until the owner shuts them off. The owner didn't know when the windshield wipers will actually shut off. There was a recall for older models.

My 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse was in for servicing the timing belt. The service manager called me to ask if I would approve an upgrade for an idler pulley for the ac/power steering belt. Since the cost was about $190, I said "no. "
after picking the car up and driving home, the ac/power steering belt came off and I lost the power steering. I took the car back to the dealer and they told me that this would happen because I did not have the $190 upgrade done. This is a safety issue. Because the original part is defective, and Mitsubishi knows that it is, it should be recalled. When the belt comes off power steering is lost and could easily cause an accident. The $190, parts only, cost is also excessive. This is merely and idler pulley that manually adjusts the tension to this belt.

Rims were defective. Consumer advised that rims bend very easily and adversely, affecting steering control while driving.
While turning corner, sterring goes out, very difficult to control car and make turn. Once turn is completed steering seems fine again. This is a intermittent problem. Have taken to the deal for repair but they state it needs to happen while "they" are driving the vehicle. In the last three weeks problem has happened 6 times. Also complaint about drivers outside door handle fell off while opening door. Again took to dealer but extended warranty didn't cover so I had to pay to buy new handle and get painted. Very expensive!!! s.

The power steering failed causing loss of hydraulic pressure. The vehicle has only 5,000 miles on it. Was told by a mechanic that this was common for the vehicle to act like that.
While driving around a curve 20 mph on wet pavement vehicle lost power, causing consumer to lose control which resulted in a crash.
