Starter Problems of Mitsubishi Eclipse

Mitsubishi Eclipse owners have reported 3 problems related to starter (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mitsubishi Eclipse based on all problems reported for the Eclipse.

1 Starter problem of the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/12/2015

Battery discharges overnight and electroautos cannot find any electrical leakage but they suspect the starter system device (an oblong device that needs to be presented to a red light to get the starter to function). The battery has been changed several times but leakage continues. Due to age, no sensors are currently available to check it. Vehicle is stationary in garage.

2 Starter problem of the 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/21/2011

My car suddenly stopped starting. I thought it was the battery so I had that replaced, but upon further inspection it was discovered that my starter had gone bad. I had the starter replaced in August of 2011 (that's too soon for a 2008). On July 16, 2012 I had to have another brand new starter installed in my Eclipse. Two brand new starters in less than a year is unacceptable and it makes it worse that the car is a 2008. I feel like Mitsubishi needs to do a recall on this part.

3 Starter problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

I am the technician who repaired this defect. The vehicle was a no start, no crank complaint. Also vehicle had no dash or accessory power. The main ignition feed from the underhood fusebox had no power at the ignition switch & testing proved it was shorted to ground. There were also several other components with no power such as pin 16 at dlc, starter & anti-theft relays. These circuits are hot at all times. After extensive troubleshooting I found a severely burned and shorted wire harness that rubbed through the insulation from contacting the sharp edges of the fender sheet metal. This harness runs from the under hood fusebox through the fender well to the junction block under the dash. There were no blown fuses found as a result of this which is highly unusual with the amount of current on these circuits. The fix was to splice/repair the damaged harness and relocate the harness as much as possible from the fender sheet metal. This is a huge fire hazard.
