1 Wheel Rim problem of the 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/07/2007

Driving on hwy. 80 on dry road at approx. 60-65 mph, in fast lane, car started to shake, as we pulled over to the side of freeway, tire blew out. . . Complete separation of belt from sidewalls, both side walls still on rim, belt (intact) rolled down freeway. Tires less than 1 year old, and lots of tread left on tire. This caused damaged to the rim which is no longer usable. We will have to replace the tire and rim, but thank god no one was hurt.

3 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 02/09/2007

Third time wheels have failed causing rapid deflation of tire and subsequent control of the car. Tire sustains no damage, but lip on rim gets bent back releasing air. Rims are too soft, or the car needs a higher profile rim and tire. Damage always occurs on front wheels due to extra weight of engine, etc. On front end. At age 62, I've owned a number of cars with alloy wheels and caught a pothole or two, but never had a wheel failure.

Gently driven 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse wheels bent out of shape, causing a tire to lose air/blow out while driving on freeway. Narrowly avoided collision after blowout.

7 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/21/2006

Brought used Mitsubishi Eclipse 2000gt. Verified through car check for any problems with vehicle, none on record. Car had one owner before myself. The car has given me problems from day one. It was parked in my carport for six months until my daughter got her drivers license at this time I kept it running. Once daughter got driver's license and started to drive vehicle, it was vibrating badly. Maint person said it was the tires and the rims needed to be replace. All the rims were bad. Each rim had a small dent of some sort. Seeing how we never really drove this vehicle it should have driven for a while without any problems. Looking into this problem, it appears that this is a know defect with this type of vehicle.

8 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/05/2006

: the vehicle had a 2 inch hole in the center of the rim which caused the tire to deflate. The manufacturer determined that the tire would have had to deflate first but the contact expressed the rim went out first due to the size of the hole in the rim in comparison to the small mark on the tire. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who was unable to determine the problem. The rim had blown outward toward the center of the rim. The consumer believed the rim was defective. Updated 08/29/06.

9 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/31/2006

My daughter hit a pot hole in her 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse and the rim bent severely and the tire went flat.

10 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/14/2006

I just purchased a 2002 Eclipse from a small dealer. Before I had purchased the car, they put 2 brand new tires on the front. The night I picked up the car, I had to travel on a few highways to get home. As I was getting back on the highway, I traveled over a rough spot in the road, but I only felt the left side going over it. A little while went by and as I was driving on the highway, I noticed that the steering wheel was pulling to one side. I knew something wasn't right because I specifically remembered how straight the steering was when I picked up the car 25 min earlier. The wheel started vibrating and I slowed up, and looked for a service area , when I pulled off I looked at the drivers side tire and saw it was flat. . . . Then I went to check the other front and it was flat too!!!these were definitely brand new. I could understand the left tire going flat because I went down in the dip, but not the passenger side. . How could 2 brand new tires go flat at the same time?? I didn't know what to do so I called 911, a police man came out and he had a tow truck come out and fill up the tires. I then followed him to their garage. The tires held the air, but I was not convinced they would hold. So the dealer towed the car back to their shop the next morning and thoroughly checked it over. They drove 50 miles on the highway. The tires were fine. . . They didn't know what caused the flat tires. And still don't! so after reading the other Mitsubishi reports with similar incidents and even blowouts I'm convinced that this car has defective rims and that they must bend causing them to deflate the tires. To prevent this from happening again, I am purchasing after market rims to be sure I am safe! the rims are stock rims made by Mitsubishi! doesn't Mitsubishi care about safety??? someone needs to research these reports, recall these rims or replace them before someone gets killed!!!!.

11 Wheel Rim problem of the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

: the contact stated while driving, there was slight vibration in the rear of the vehicle. While the vehicle was pulled into the emergency lane for inspection the right rear tire rolled onto the highway. The sidewall completely disinterested and the tire came off the rim. The psi was at 30 for highway use, but the manufacturer recommended psi of 40. There were no obvious road hazards that could have caused the failure. The tire was a toyo, 22535zr18. The tire has not been replaced due to the damage the rim sustained.

12 Wheel Rim problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/08/2005

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse gts. It has about 75,000 miles on it now. I have now bent 4 wheels on this model. They keep blaming it on me, saying its my driving, but after the fourth time, I know it is not me. I should not be regularly bending wheels on a car, especially when the vast majority of my driving is highway driving.

13 Wheel Rim problem of the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

14 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/07/2005

The rims on my car are peeling. Because of the peeling they are now rusting. I am trying to sell the car but now I have to replace all the rims because these ones looks horrible. I have talked to other people with 2001 Eclipses that have done the same thing.

15 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/10/2005

Front drivers side aluminuim alloy rim cracked.

16 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 04/21/2005

Under normal driving conditions, I hit a small pothole while changing lanes while heading to the Mitsubishi dealership (where I used to work) and lost control of my 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse gt. Upon changing my tire, my rim was bent so severely that I had a hard time getting the lug nuts off of the vehicle. Over 2 inches the rim dented in. Now, 2 weeks later, I noticed a problem in the front left end, that rim is dented severly in two places, not just one. I am going to have to replace that rim as well. To top everthing off, I also had to replace my tire because the first time I blew out the sidewall. This is over $1,000 in just wheel and tire damage. Also, during employment at the Mitsubishi dealership, I reported defect's with my wheels and it was not brought to the attention of the district service manager, bob desimone. I requested that they be replaced due to peeling paint and small rust marks on all 4 rims. I will be filing a report with Mitsubishi motors of north America today. I am 28 and have bought 3 new Mitsubishi's. At this point, never again.

17 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/20/2005

Recently took my Mitsubishi 2000 Eclipse to get an alignment. Shop refused to complete it because 3 of my rims were bent under normal driving conditions. The tires will hold air, but tire noise can be heard when driving especially at 55 mph or higher and the wheel will shake when needing to brake at high speeds. My mechanic has said all 3 rims will need to be replaced before anything can be done.

18 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 03/11/2005

Driving home at approximatly 9:00pm est going 40 mph on route 611 north around warrington, PA in the rain. Heard a loud bang from the passenger front side of the car (really loud). I assume that I had hit a pot hole and was not immedialty concerned until I heard a weird flapping noise. I pulled into a safe location to check out the tire and wheel and the wheel was heavily dented. The tire had lost all air, but was not torn up. After putting on the spare I checked the wheel using a flashlight and noticed that the wheel was cracked. I will need to replace the 17" alloy wheel at cost of $350. I have had other alloy wheels that have stood up to pot holes before. I have read all previous complaints, as well as, the report finalization by NHTSA. I am lucky that in the rain I didn't lose control of the vehicle and be part of/cause an accident. I am a little concerned as to the structure and security of these rims for the future. If this happend at a speed of about 40 mph, what would have been the ramifications at 55/60mph on a highway? currently, I still have the cracked wheel in my possession. I am planning to purchase another wheel tomorrow March 12, 2005.

19 Wheel Rim problem of the 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/15/2005

The rims on the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse dent easily and the tires blow out or lose pressure as a result of normal wear and driving. Normal potholes and bumps are enough to cause damage. I had a blowout yesterday January 15th, 2005. I have previously replaced 2 rims and 3 tires as a result of this. All four rims are currently dented as a result of this issue. The manufacturer and local retailers are all unwilling to replace them with the improved rims on the 2002 and later models.

20 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 01/07/2005

I own a 2000 Eclipse gt and have experienced consistent wheel/tire problems since purchase. The most recent was a blowout at highway speed (in dense traffic) which could have caused a serious accident. All 4 original factory rims on this car have been dented, as well as 2 replacement rims under normal driving conditions. I've had numerous flats during both driving and parked conditions which have been determined to be caused by leaking or dented rims. After reseaching the issue online it appears that many other Eclipse owners have experienced the same difficulties. Since I already have spent significant time and money repairing/replacing dangerous leaking tires/damaged factory rims, I have now chosen to replace the currently damaged rims with custom rims to avoid further issues with Mitsubishi manufactured wheels.

21 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/30/2004

While driving 30 mph, the vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the rear right and front right rims needed to be replaced. The front right rim was cracked and bent and the rear right was bent. Please provide further details.

22 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/25/2004

Car has about 30000 miles, owner went out to look at car this morning and found that front passenger's side tire is completely flat and rim is severely dented. Owner does not recall hitting anything that would have dented rim. Front driver's side rim was minorly dented on pothole about six weeks ago, suspected to have caused slow leak in tire, but owner was not going to report until second rim dented without apparent cause. Two rims now need replaced; neither front tire holds air securely. Both rims visibly damaged, incurring financial expense and causing distress to owner because incident happened out of town on christmas morning the day before she was scheduled to make eight-hour return trip to columbus from philadelphia, rendering the car undrivable. Tires might also need replaced if damage to them has occured. Rims and tires have not been repaired or replaced yet because owner filed complaint immediately after discovering damage.

23 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/10/2004

I own a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder gt. I was in a relatively minor car accident. About 2 months ofter the accident and repairs had been made, one of my tires could not hold tire pressure. I had the tires replaced on the vehicle. The same tire continued to go flat. I inspected the factory 17" alloy rim and I found a crack in the rim. I inspected the other rims as well and noticed similar smaller cracks forming. I do not now if the cracks are due to the accident or due to faulty workmanship. A well made rim would not have cracked due to a relativley minor impact. Accident report on file hamilton twp police. Accident not caused due to failure of the rim.

24 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 12/04/2004

Normal road conditions lead to my wheel rim cracking and requiring a new rim. This failure may have caused a severe accident if I was traveling at high speed, luckily I was only traveling at 25 mph when the failure occurred, leaving the car disabled. New rims are very costly with added repair costs ($686). Further the spare tire does not fit the front of the car? how is this legal?.

25 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 11/14/2004

The rims on our daughters 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse are bent really bad and it is causing the tires to go flat. We have replaced one a couple of years ago and now the rest of them are bent to the point they need to be replaced before the tires fall off. It looks like someone took a can opener and pulled them back.

26 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

Whiledriving on highway in rush hour traffic, doing 40 mph. Hit pot hole, and felt something not right. Found that the rim was bent, and the tire had immediately deflated. Left on side of road, had to drive 90 miles home on a donut. This is the second time this has happened in a year.

27 Wheel Rim problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/27/2004

During cold weather the rims are causing the front/rear tires to lose air. Investigation ea02a007. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

28 Wheel Rim problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 10/22/2004

Have a 2003 Eclipse and many many problems since purchasing. After regular scheduled tire balance and rotation, took the car back because of shaking at 50-60 mph, the dealership told me the rims were bent, and they would have to be replaced, and they did (right after balance and rotating? would they balance if the rims were bent?) had my car in numerous times for moisture in my windows when putting them down and back up, a lot of moisture and bad visibility, replaced strips which helped mold smell, but can't fix the moisture. B/c of the bad visibility I am extra careful, but my car should not have this problem. Recently the molding on the windshield was coming loose, the dealership fixed it (sent it to a window place) and since then I have a film on my windshield which makes it very difficult to see. . . I have cleaned the glass numerous times, my wipers were fairly new, mitsbushi wouldn't look at it when I took it in for another rim replacement. My car still shakes, my windows and windshield have bad visibility problems, and now my sunroof button has popped out and will not open unless I hold it in first.

29 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/16/2004

Consumer replaced three aluminum wheels. Consumer will provide further information.

30 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/14/2004

I wish to file a defective compaint. My compaint is for rims on a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder. Three of the four rims are defective. They all are bent. They are very weak rims that have obviously dented due to normal wear and tear. I asked my local mitusbishi dealer if there was a recall on them. They said that they have been getting numerous complaints but the company will not replace them or have them fixed.

31 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/08/2004

The consumer stated the wheel rims were dented. When the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have them replaced and examined he was told that they do not make this kind any more. The tire was losing air from the dent. The vehicle did not hit any pot holes. There were three wheels with dents.

32 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 09/02/2004

On January 2003 while driving at 40 mph, the consumer hit a small pot hole. One half month later, the consumer experienced a flat tire on the passenger front side. The vehicle was taken to goodyear dealership to replace the tire. The dealership indicated the rim was cracked.

33 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/27/2004

My experience, online testimonials and news regarding Mitsubishi Eclipse alloy wheels' faulty construction convinced me that my suspicions were confirmed. Although odi claims all damage is cosmetic, I suspect they've never taken a 2001 Eclipse for an extended spin.

34 Wheel Rim problem of the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/24/2004

While driving 30 mph consumer lost the control of the vehicle. Consumer stated that passenger wheel rim was bent. Consumer found on the web page many consumers having the same problem. The wheels were made of very soft easily bent metal.

35 Wheel Rim problem of the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Failure Date: 08/20/2004

I own a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse with stock 17" rims. In the last 4 years, I've experienced 4 flat tires and numerous bent rims from regular freeway and street driving. It appears that the stock 17" rims are too soft and have a tendency to bend easily. Each occurence forced me to repair the wheel and replace the flat tire. It has cost me over $2000 in repairs as well as an undetermined amount of lost wages from missing work due to lack of transportation. I feel that this is a factory defect and requires attention by the manufacturer.
