While the 2002 Galant was in park and engine off , vehicle was parked in steep driveway I was fastening baby into carseat on rear passenger side other child bumped gear shift into reverse and car engaged . I was dragged with vehicle down driveway across street into a yard and into a tree where vehicle came to rest after crashing into tree. The Galants shift lock does not work the brake should have to be depressed to shift and not at all if engine is off. This needs to be investigated as this could well have been fatal. Luckily I received only a broken foot and cuts.

The contact owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant. While the vehicle was idling, the contact heard a humming sound coming from the engine. She attempted to accelerate, but the vehicle stalled and shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that a transmission kit was needed. The contact did not notice any differences beforehand. The current mileage was 94,000 and failure mileage was 73,000.
Driving on highway, check engine light came on, transmission died. . . Drive/reverse no longer work. New transmission required at a cost of over $6,000 from Mitsubishi dealer.
Transmission fluid dipstick impossible to read, notified dealer, dealer said that's just how it is designed. I'm worried because tranmissions are a common failure on this generation of Mitsubishi Galant. Can this be corrected by a dipstick redesign?.

I was traveling rush traffic going over a hill when the car stop and started to reverse, while in drive. I braked and put car in park stop the engine and restart the vehicle and tried moving forward but the car still preceded backward down the hill. I tried all gears included reverse and none worked except park and car engine was kept on running fine all that time.
Car started stalling at low speeds, had transmission filter changed, found a lot of metal in fluid. Drove car 500 more miles before losing reverse and overdrive. Transmission unable to run at 71,000 miles.

I have a '03 Mitsubishi Galant (automatic) which now has approx 8000 miles. At approx. 4500 miles the vehicle began hesitating upon hard acceleration, such as when entering a freeway. The vehicle also hesitates while driving in "stop and go" traffic, such as what is done with in-town driving in traffic. At first I believed I had filled the gas tank with bad gasoline. The vehicle acted like it had a clogged fuel filter/line. I continued driving the vehicle while trying to figure out what was wrong. A warning light finally came on and I took the vehicle in to the dealer where I purchased it on 6/9/03. I was informed that there was a problem with the transmission. The dealer kept the vehicle for approx 3 weeks to make the repairs. Diagnosis: internal trans failure upon inspection fournd 4th gear clutch past clearance out of spec and clutches burned. Replaced 4th gear clutches and reset snap ring clearance. Insp 2nd brake piston and replaced o-rings. Removed valve body. Insp and found check ball wearing through separator plate. Replaced valve body separator plate. Replace seal from valve body to 2nd brake. I picked up my vehicle 6/27/03. After driving for one day, I am experiencing the same problems. My concern is that this is a safety hazard. When trying to get onto a freeway and/or manuevering through in town traffic, this vehicle is posing a hazard for myself and/or other drivers. I will return the vehicle to the dealer as soon as I determine what my options are. Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions or to let me know if I need to report this to another agency. Thanks.
Rotors warped and rusted and could not be resurfaced. Resulting in cost of $475 dollars for new front rotors and brake pads. Also minor crash for slow stopping. Car also jerks when changing gears.

I was driving about 60 mph on the highway, when all of a sudden, the transmission shifted three times. The check engine light came on, and when I got home, the car would not go into reverse. The next day, I placed the gear in drive, and pressed the gas; it sounded as if the entire everything would fall out. My transmission has gone out without warning, and I know this is not normal. I now see that there is a transmission problem with these cars. Please make sure that Mitsubishi takes responsibility and compensate us, the consumers. If they don't, they will only lose customers. Thanks.
Hi, I am writing this because we have had problems with this car for the past 4 years. The transmission only lasted for 1 or if we were lucky 2 years. Now we all ready put three of them in the car in the past 4 years, two were new and one was used. Now I know that may not seem like a lot of money to some people but when you are trying to support three kids that's a lot. Well my complaint is that why are we having these problems. The dealer said that it was a defect that when they built this car that they were test cars . And they said that as long as I own this car I will have this problem over and over. And the dealer who said it was the one in liverpool new york . So please if you can help let me now what I can do. Thank you.

When accelerating the transmission lagged the kicked into gear. When it finally failed, it lagged and something popped and had no gears at all. The car did still run, pressing the gas did no good.
While traveling on highway heard a knocking noise coming from underneath of vehicle. Then, it shut off. Vehicle was towed to dealer. The dealership was aware of problem.
Went to dealer to have checked, explained they said the little delay and thunk it how the transmission operates. Went about 6 months or less before default.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Transmission will stop pulling without warning. Dealer was informed about problem.
Engine check light call on and started to stall at 60mph. No advance warning was given that there was problem with the transmission. 30 day prior car was in the shop for tune up and oil change. Contacted dealer stated car warranty is not in effect because of mileage, however I stated car is only 3 years old.
Consumer has a recall . When taken into dealer, dealer did not have part to vehicle, even after conusmer has made appointment, no one called consumer to inform him.
Automatic transmission locked up with no prior warning. With under 20000 miles on the car transmission would not shift. Took to dealer and they made an adjustment and it was fine. Then, at 76000 miles the transmission locked up in traffic.
While driving on the highway vehicle just stopped, was caused by a defect in transmission.
Consumer received recall notice id01v011001/manufacturer's recall 001snd0124. Sea coast Mitsubishi has part on back order. Dealership is on rt 35 in ocean township, NJ. Phone #732-493-4202. Consumer still has not received repairs.
Did not go into or stay in park.
Going 55mph on I-84 to waterbury ci. Car didn't accelerate to maintain speed going uphill. Stopped to check transmission fluid. Resevoir was full. On attempting to resune the journey the car went fwdd.
I was told by the dealer that this part was not covered because the warranty had expired. I found out today that this was covered at the time the dealer told me it couldn't be repaired under the warranty.
My car was at the dealer for a month until trassmision was fixed.
Vehicle passed maryland state inspection earlier that day, only to not be able to move in reverse later. Gearshift went into the reverse position easily, but car would not move, and emitted a scraping/hissing sound. Mitsubishi service center in annapolis, MD says they will not pay for repairs, because we cannot produce receipts/paperwork to show all scheduled maintenance has been done. We feel this is obviously a manufacturers defect for this to occur at only 47,000 miles.
Purchased vehicle 10/16/199, it had approx. 52,000 miles, since purchase transmission has been installed, air condition repaired and now there is something to do with the harmonic balance.
My wife was stopped at a traffic light, tried to take off, but nothing. Transmission was gone. Dealer said things sometimes happen. Manufacturer said warranty was out at 60,000mi. Estimate was at $2600. Shop said it could not be rebuilt. They tried to blame on us and said it was over full on fluid. We've never put one drop in and even if it was over full it would not cause transmission to seize up in a matte of seconds. We had the car five months when this happened. I am very angry at the dealership and the mfg. For not disclosing this transmission problem. When I asked if this was a common problem they said, "OH, no"!.

While driving the vehicle the first day of purchase I noticed the transmission was not shifting properly. I asked the salesman what that was he told me that's just the way the car runs. A few months later I was still having the same problem I called the dealer and made a big stink about it and they told me to bring it in. I did, they told me there was nothing wrong with my transmission. I was still having problems and took it to a independent mechanic. Who dropped the pan and found metal shavings, not a lot. The problem persisted, so I took it back to my mechanic to have it serviced again and this time when he dropped the pan there were large chunks of metal. One looked like a gear head. I then called my dealer to see what they were going to do about it. They then told me that they had no information proving that I had a warranty and all the time I did. They told me to contact Mitsubishi motors to get my warranty information, the lady there told me I did have a warranty and that the car had been disposed of as a defective automobile. I am now persuing legal action.
Transmission upshifts and downshifts very abruptly banging severly on each shift. Took to dealer ,was told shifting was normal. Problem got worse , took to another dealership (20,000 mi) ,was told computor needed reprograming and repaired. Somewhat remedied problembut as time went on problem reoccured. Again was told this was normal shifting and nothing more could be done. Took to transmission specalist was told shift patterns were not right and the abuse to this point will definility affect the life of this system. Trying to get satisfaction from mits. Without much success.
Consumer was driving at approximately 55 mph when transmission became inoperative without any warning, resulting in loss control. Consumer then had to pull emergency brake in order to regain control.
