Excessive oil consumption. My car starts to get difficult to drive about every 200-300 miles. Start to hear a clunk, when I add oil it is ok but only gets 16-18 miles a gallon vs the 28-30 it should get. Engine is burning through 2 quarts of oil every week. This make model and year already has a recall on it but the web site is saying that my VIN number has no open recalls. This car is the same as the cars covered by the recall. It can't be a coincidence that my vehicle and hundreds of others, from the same year are doing the same thing but. Nissan is only covering certain ones. Nissan needs to fix this problem for all 2006 Altima's with excessive oil consumption. It is costing $12 a week fir oil and my gas mileage is down by 1/3.
Excess engine oil consumption recall #06v223000 - I took my vehicle to an automotive repair shop because my vehicle ran out of oil on 3 separate occasions and the low oil light did not come on to let me know that there was an issue. During each occasion, I pulled over because I heard a loud "knocking' sound coming from the engine as I was driving and became worried. Each time the issue occurred before the 3 month/3,000 mile scheduled oil change. The mechanic located an external oil leak on the 1st occasion and repaired the external leak. My car was inspected to see if there were any other external oil leaks when the problem of running out of oil continued to occur; however, no additional external leaks were located. My mechanic recommended that I contact Nissan regarding the excessive oil consumption. I was advised by a Nissan representative that they have already fixed the excessive oil consumption issue for my VIN and that they would not inspect or repair that issue again without me paying a local Nissan dealer.
My 2006 Nissan Altima 2. 5l base consumes approx. 1 quart of oil every 200 miles, there are no leaks so I am assuming it is burning oil I have checked various sites including Nissan,NHTSA and it shows no open recalls, my car only has 139000 miles, I have owned various makes of auto over my 47 yrs of driving and never ran into a problem like this!.
Excessive oil consumption engine damage can occur and in extreme cases result in an engine fire. I have to replaced engine and I still having issues sped over $5000 in repairs.
Consuming or burning a lot of oil. Had to add about a quart of oil every 300 miles. It takes longer to shift and does not have power going uphill. Hard 1-2 shift.
Excessive oil consumption on my Nissan Altima 2. 5l 2006. From what I've read this is a common problem with the 2. 5l engine which could result in engine fire.
Vehicle is exhibiting excessive oil consumption as described in ntb06-028 (described below) and covered under Nissan motors recall number 06v223000. 1-quart of oil needs to be added to engine after approximately 300 to 500 miles of travel or every month to maintain level in the safe dipstick 'l to h' level. Initial phone contact with Nissan motors representative at 1-800-647-7261 resulted in being informed that since vehicle is not in VIN recall range, Nissan cannot do anything. Worry is that if engine oil level is inadvertently neglected, an engine fire could result while driving the vehicle. Recall summary: certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2. 5l engines may experience excessive engine oil consumption as a result of improper performance of the piston rings. Consequence: if the oil is not maintained at least at the minimum level, engine damage can occur and in extreme cases result in an engine fire.
I was traveling at highway speed when my "check engine" light came on. I was approxiamtely 2-3 miles from my highway exit and less than 4 miles from my apartment. A minute or two later I heard a loud thud from my engine compartment. A vehicle came alongside of my vehicle and waved for me to pull over, indicating that my vehicle was on fire or smoking. I pulled over to the side of the road, which happened to also within yards of my exit. I exited my vehicle and popped my hood as my engine compartment was smoking. My engine was on fire and proceeded to burn as I called 911 and a wrecker service. It appears that a connecting rod was liberated and exited the front of the engine block while I was traveling at highway speed. This caused catasrophic engine failure and oil venting from the engine that landed on the hot surfaces ignited and burnt the engine harnesses, drive shaft boots and other plastic and rubber components in close proximity. It was determined by a mechanic that the pre-cat header lost catyst material and was ingested into the engine during the overlap cycle of the cam timing. This destroyed the internal surfaces of the piston chamber, thus leading to oil consumption and engine recipricating component failure. GMC/Nissan demaagd (battle creek, mi) who had sold me the vehicle used with approximately 95,000 miles on it in August 2013 (only 10 months earlier) would not cover any of the repairs and estimated $7,000 for a new engine and $3,850 for a used engine. I am exceptionally disappointed that Nissan would not assist with the repair of this vehicle, which is obvsioulsy the result of a design flaw as the internet is ful of similar issues with this model, make and year.
Engine stalls at some times, car shut off while waiting at a stop light. It just dies right in the middle of traffic. I get turn the engine off and start it again, had several problems cranking. Checked for diagnosis codes but did not get any faulty codes. I try to speak with Nissan about it, its always the same thing. . . Ecm relay campaign had been reprogrammed and that's all we can do also engine was burning excessive oil and felt hard drive on this vehicle.
The vehicle listed above went in for a oil change three weeks prior to the incident date listed above. Two weeks after the oil change the oil indicator began to flash, calling the mechanic instructed for the car to be brought in for inspection. The mechanic noticed that a excessive amount of oil was consumed, the mechanic further notice that there was no leak under or around the vehicle to lose oil, coming to the conclusion that the engine had consumed all of the oil. He proceeded to put more oil in the car. A week later I noticed that the engine began to knock, that the engine had been damaged. I proceeded to look to see if there was any recalls on the vehicle listed above. . Read more...

The contact spoke with the manufacturer regarding NHTSA recall campaign id number: 06v223000 (engine and engine cooling) and was told that the vehicle was not included in the recall. My 2006 Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl appears to be part of a recall (ntb06-028) for excessive oil consumption. The car began exhibiting the symptoms of the recall concerning excessive oil burning at 120k miles in late June 2012. The problem started suddenly, burning one quart every 600 miles and with in two weeks one quart every 300-350 miles. Throughout my ownership of the car the vehicle had always been properly maintained at my local Nissan dealer. At 138k miles the vehicle began making a noise that sounded like a bag trapped underneath the car. Just after arriving home, the car exploded in thick, black smoke that billowed from under the hood and into the vehicle through the vents. Recall campaign id number: 06v223000 clearly states that, ?certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2. 5l engines may experience excessive oil consumption?. The extreme consequence of this problem is engine damage and fire. According to my records the recall was performed on the car on 4/24/08 at my local dealership however my initial contact at Nissan corporate said that the car was not a part of the recall. Later, another representative said that the recall was performed on 4/26/06 (this predates the NHTSA a preliminary defect report). After multiple phone calls and conversations I am extremely disappointed that Nissan will not accept any responsibility for the faulty recall fix.
There was a recall id#06v223000 for 2006 Nissan Altima for oil consumption. My car is experiencing the same problem as the above mentioned recall id. Describes. According to Nissan consumer affairs, "that all recalls and service campaign info is vehicle indentification number specific, depending on the mfg date and the plant where the vehicle was assembled. Therefore not all models are subject to the same recalls" their saying my car dose not fall under that recall.
My car has been diagnosed with a faulty crank and cam sensors, catalystic convertor as well. Today I took car into shop because it has been burning excessive amounts of oil. I have to put as much as 4 quarts of oil into car a week. I called Nissan and they indicate that their are recalls for this problem but my car is not one of the vins recalled.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the engine exhibited excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was taken to an independent auto mechanic, who advised that a quart of oil was being consumed every 1,000 miles. The technician detected that the engine dip-stick was completely dry and engine oil was dispensed at the appropriate level. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 07v527000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the VIN was not included in the recall campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 61,748.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the engine was burning excessive oil, causing the catalytic converter to fail. In addition, the rear suspension was sitting abnormally low to the ground and was sitting noticeably lower than the front suspension. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed him that the engine and catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified who advised the contact that there were no recalls for the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 166,000.
I had a 2003 Nissan Altima that stalled on i95 (3) times before it was correctly diagnosed as a crank sensor issue and became a major recall for Nissan. In July 2006 I leased another Nissan Altima after the engine was completed damaged on my 2003 Altima due to another recall regarding oil consumption issues. I inquired a few months ago at a routine service visit if my current 2006 Nissan was part of the "crank sensor" recall that was recently issued and told it was. I had never received any notification in the mail from either Nissan or the dealer, this recall I was told was corrected during my visit. On Saturday March 29,2008 I was driving on i95 in the third lane at approx 65-70 mph and the car stalled without any warning. I was able to coast across 3 lanes and get half in the breakdown lane at which time I departed the car got to a safe area out of harm's way of traffic and contacted the state troopers for assistance. They came and stayed with me until the tow truck arrived and towed me to the car dealership. I was given a rental car since the car was not able to start again without stalling was contacted on Monday March 31, 2008 by the dealer to let me know the car started normally they had drove it for several miles and no problem. The comment made was they will drive again on Tuesday and if no issues they can't explain what happened. Since I already had a similar experience with my 2003 Altima and same car dealer I'm confident this problem will reoccur again and this time once again endanger my life and others on the road with me at the time of the incident. Please assist me in getting their attention for myself and others regarding this life threatening issue. I'm sure I'm not the only vehicle with this problem, since my 2003 issue turned into a major recall for approx 650,000 vehicles.

The contact received recall 06v223000 for the same failure. The contact stated that a sensor was changed, but the vehicle continued to consume excessive amounts of oil. According to the recall if the failure continued the manufacturer would replace the engine. The dealer advised the contact that the oil consumption was considered normal per Nissan specs and will not replace the engine. - the contact changed the oil himself on the 2006 Nissan Altima. He first changed the oil at 500 miles ,and at that time 4 1/2 quarts came out that is the amount of oil he put in. The contact s changed the oil again at 3750 only 3 quarts came out. He knew that he put 4 1/2 quarts in the first time. The contact took the vehicle to the Nissan dealer and explained what happened. The contact was told they would send the oil to their lab oratoryfor analysis. The contact received a letter, which stated that after their analysis, they found the oil consumption was normal. The contact did not believe this to be normal. Before he purchased the vehicle the dealer told him the engine had been replaced because of excessive oil consumption.
Problem with engine consuming too much oil. When vehicle was taken in for oil changes was informed by technician that oil consumption was normal. Received letter from Nissan USA motors stating there was a recall due to engine consuming too much oil and were currently looking at a solution to the problem. To ensure no further damage to engine owner was required maintain suggested oil levels. The car started making noise coming from the engine was told it was nothing to worry about. Last letter received by Nissan USA motor stated to take vehicle in to nearest dealership for a test that would determine if only ecm would need to be reset or maybe a possible engine replacement.

Excessive oil consumption on my new 2006 Nissan Altima. I purchased the car in March 2006, received recall notice informing me to check oil every 700 miles due to a defect. I immediately checked the oil only to find my engine contained no oil. Brought to Nissan dealer who refilled engine. Car has been brought back 4 times for low oil. Nissan corporation has not helped and several of these vehicles have caught on fire according to news reports. Nissan has not contacted me since April when they sent notice telling me that a fix would be in and I would be contacted within 60 days. It is dangerous to the thousands of customers who has purchased these vehicles to be driving them long distances. I drive several thousand miles a month with work and am being inconvenienced due to this along with putting my safety at risk.
To everyone out there that is having trouble with Nissan USA replacing your faulty 2. 5l Altima engine and have received the "oil consumption" letter. . . Get in-touch with the bbb auto section. They were awesome with handling my case. . . Received my new engine two days ago. . . Hassle free. Of course this was after trying to work a deal with Nissan USA consumer affairs office for more than two months. The bbb did it in five days after receiving my package.
: the contact stated there was an oil consumption problem with the vehicle that required constant oil level checks and additions. The manufacturer was aware and endeavoring to solve the problem and had sent two separate updates about the ongoing investigation to find a solution.
Enroute to tucson az on interstate 10, my vehicle, a 2006 Nissan Altima se, became uncontrollable. I heard a sound that I thought was a blowout in one of my tires as I attempted to guide the vehicle to the median. Upon just barely entering the median, I checked my tires and discovered the problem was not a blowout. I noticed another driver pulled into the median on the opposite side of the road. She was checking her vehicle for damage to the front. I crossed over and she informed me that she observed smoke & fire emitting from my vehicle before undetermined "parts of my vehicle" struck hers. I did smell a strong odor of smoke and a flow of black fluid towards the rear of the vehicle. I called aaa of arizona and was towed to the Nissan dealership in tucson. My 2006 nisssan Altima has 16800 miles on it and is still under factory warranty. Upon arriving at my home at approximately 7:00 pm, I received a call from the Nissan dealership advising me that the incident was caused by the auto technician who had performed my previous oil change not reinstalling the oil plug securely after the oil change and they, Nissan, had conclusive proof that was the case. I contacted jiffy lube who will be sending a representative to inspect the vehicle to determine the veracity of the Nissan claim. Subsequently, I learned of recall 06v223000 affecting 2006 Nissan Altima vehicles. The recall is for excessive engine oil consumption as a result of improper performance of the piston rings. Prior to this incident, I had not been contacted by Nissan nor was I aware of the recall. As my oil change at jiffy lube occurred in may and I had not noticed any leaking oil, I am skeptical of Nissan's efforts to point the blame at jiffy lube when it appears extremely likely my near accident was likely caused by the source of recall 06v223000. I know that only divine providence saved me from being struck by traffic behind me on a road where the speed limit is 75mph. Causing improper.
There was a recall sent to me stating that the car has a high oil consumption rate and that there have been complaints of engine fires. However, the car has not been physically recalled. I had been hearing the brakes squeal and scrub after 3 weeks of having the car, have only had 2 months, finally 2 months later it was found that all 4 calipers were leaking. The parts that were needed were on national back order. The parts were shipped in and the brake pads, calipers, and rotors were replaced, according to the dealer. This was a week ago, currently I am having more trouble with the brake area.
I was informed that I am currently driving on a recall engine and no one seems to know how the problem will be addressed. I just purchased this 2006 Nissan Altima not even 2 months ago and already there is a recall on the motor in regards to oil consumption. However Nissan wants to ensure that the oil level is being maintained at a correct level in which I was informed that I needed to go to the dealer every 700 miles. Why???? do you know how much of an inconvenience that is to individuals. Give me a break. This problem has to do with the engine which is being explained that it has to be replaced. When??? how long do we have to put our lives on hold for Nissan. This is a multi-million dollar company and they have sold 85,000 defective units. Why should I pay a car note on a vehicle that is defective and no action is being taken to correct the problem. I feel more communication is needed ASAP. Please advise.
Nissan Altima excessive oil consumption. Oil level was at l at 700 miles. Added oil again at 1,000 miles.
- the contact has a 2006 Nissan Altima, which he leased on may 29, 2006. The vehicle had excessive oil consumption since shortly after he leased the vehicle. The contact has been trying to learn when Nissan knew that this was a safety hazard, and why he was not informed before leasing this vehicle. Nissan has agreed to replace the engine free of charge, but will not tell the contact when they knew of recall 06v223000 prior to his leasing the vehicle. Since September the contact has been to the dealer at least twice to have oil replaced.
: the contact stated a letter was received from the manufacturer was received concerning excessive oil consumption and risk of possible fire. There is currently no problem with the vehicle; however there is concern of the potential risk. The manufacturer has put a hold on the sale of new Altima's with a 2. 5 liter engine pending their investigation of the possible problem. Updated 07/07/06.
Purchased 2006 Nissan Altima last day of April. Since then the following has occurred. . . . 1. Five days after the purchased date fuel pump replaced. Car was very difficult to start 2. Since the dealership was unable to perform any detailing service on the date of purchase it was agreed I could bring it back at a later date. On 20 may during detailing service a 6" strip of paint peeled off the front bumper. Bumper was sent to local paint shop in daphne al. For repair. . . Ask the dealership for paperwork on the re-paint, to date have not received paperwork. 3. Now the first of two real serious concerns. Steering / handling at speeds over 60 mph is unsafe with any measurable wind. The car w/o considerable correction veers from lane to lane. This has been the case from day one. . . . Dealership stated tire air pressure was the likely cause. . . . I've tried the recommend 29 psi down to 24 psi. Up to 34 psi. Did not help. My intent was to pass this car along to my 16 year old daughter but feel it's too unsafe during highway/freeway driving. Three days ago I receive the oil consumption letter from Nissan. I drive approx. 120 miles per day 5 days a week. To date my car has 2700 miles during the first oil check at approx. 1000 miles I noticed the oil level was approx. One quart low but was not concerned due to not knowing for sure how much oil was present during purchase. . . . Added 1 qrt and had not checked the level again until I received the letter. . . 1700 miles total. . . . During this second oil level check the oil level on the dip stick was found just below the add mark. No light indicator had come on the control panel. . . Had I not received the letter it would have been t 2000 more miles before my first scheduled oil change was due and would not have checked it prior to that point. . . . This is a huge safety concern to my family and I. I truly hope the NHTSA and Nissan does the right thing before someone pays with their life.
: the contact stated a noise was heard coming from the engine; there was excessive oil consumption and the transmission slips at various speeds. The noise from the engine was observed before the engine excessive oil consumption was discovered. The dealership was alerted and directed the contact to add oil every 700 miles. The dealer explained something is wrong with the pistons therefore; the engine needs to be replaced. It will take up to two months for the replacement engine to be available. The manufacturer was alerted and explained oil should continue to be added.
We purchased a new Nissan 2006 Altima 2. 5 on 05/31/06. Two days later, June 2nd, it was on the news that Nissan told their dealers to stop selling this car due to engine fires and excessive oil consumption. Within a week we received an un-dated letter from Nissan telling owners about this problem and to monitor oil level. Further word would come in 60 days - two months! I was told that on June 1 they stopped selling the affected vehicles. One day after my purchase! we then contacted Nissan with the phone number that was on the letter. We told them we would like to return this car and get something else or our money back. They laughed! the dealer did the same, and gave me a very low trade in price. We feel that we should not have to monitor the oil on a brand new car. We bought this car for its reliability after we had lemon law problems with another vehicle. It looks like we got another lemon! we had this car for less than 2 weeks and under 600 miles and do-not feel safe. They have already made an admission of this problem in their letter about monitoring the oil which could result in engine fires if not properly maintained. As a consumer buying a new car I should not be burdened by this problem between recommended oil changes and be exposed to possible injury or death. This was our first Nissan purchase and Nissan customer service and the dealership made us feel very poorly about them. I am very dissatisfied with my purchase of this vehicle and have no confidence in it. I do not want my family or myself in an unsafe vehicle and we do not feel safe at all! and I have to wait 60 days for some sort of action! why should we wait for something to happen, an engine fire or anything else before something can be done? to make me a satisfied customer take the vehicle back and replace it or refund me!.
I bought a 2006 Nissan Altima on may 22, 2006. Yesterday, I received a notice from Nissan stating that there is an engine problem relating to oil consumption and engine fires. (I also saw an article in the paper about this problem) I have only 700 miles on the car, I checked the oil as soon as I received the notice and the oil was down by 1/2 quart, which is unheard of for a car with only 700 miles. I called the dealership and was told that Nissan is increasing their warranty and to keep my oil levels up. For the amount of money I paid for this car (cash), I should not have to be concerned with an engine catching on fire. I think Nissan should buy my car back and sell me a model that is not defective(only had the car 3 weeks). I am still waiting to hear from the dealership on how they will handle this problem.
