general problems of the 2008 Nissan Altima - part 1

Dashboard material defective melted sticky and very reflective. No idea how toxic could be.

The dash is melting from the heat and is very sticky. It’s really unsafe due to the glare that affects the driver vision. It has already caused me to have one near miss when a tractor pulled into road and I was unable to see him until the last second. Then I jerked the steering missing the tractor.

Glare off dash board is blinding on sunny days. Dashboard is melting, the melted dash reflection is distraciton/ binding on sunny days, and smell from dash is not pleasant. Not knowing actual product that is melting is concerning since melting plastics and vinyl can be toxic. Took car out for ride on sunny day had to pull over because of glare dashboard. Tried to contact Nissan about any products to resurface and contain the melted mess an smell. They offered no solutions besides take in to local dearliship. Not shelling out 500 dollars for nationally known defective material. You can contact any quality managment firm or producer that have working knowledge with plastics and vinyl to confirm that this is a major quality defect. I can not even find out what actual material was used to cover for soft dash.

2008 Nissan Altima: noticed this year a shiny gleam on the dashboard. This windshield gets hazy. The dashboard is melting, it is sticking and shiny. When a fingernail is pressed, it will actually sink into the dashboard and leave a mark. The dashboard cannot take any cleaning or friction. When the dashboard is touched it leaves fingers sticky. Became more of an issue this year now that I have a grandchild. My other vehicle is a Mini cooper 2 door which is not feasible to hold a car seat and baby. I now have the carseat in the Nissan and now it has become more of a problem because I cannot use the other car as alternative transportation when I have my grandchild. It is very difficult to drive with the glare it causes, and it is a safety issue not only for me but for others. When the sun is out and it is hot (this summer) it is worst and causes the windshield to get hazy. Not sure if it is leaking chemicals as the dashboard is now soft, shiny and cannot be removed by cleaning. The glare is very dangerous and difficult to drive under the conditions. The dashboard of this vehicle has become sticky to the touch and excessively shiny, and appears to be melting in spots, causing glare on the windshield that obstructs vision while driving.

The dashboard in this vehicle similar to other Nissan models that have already been recalled is cracked, sticky, shiny and glossy. It’s dangerous to have cracks in the dashboard in case of airbag deployment. The glossy shiny dashboard creates a blinding glare and is extremely dangerous while driving. It creates a glare that makes the front windshield appear black and unable to see through.

When I start my car and let it warm up, then reverse then put it in drive, I put my foot on the gas and the rpms shoot up to 3 to 4 rpms, I have to remove my four from the gas then my car is very slow and stays at 2 1/2 - 3 rpms for several miles . Checked fluids etc and still have the same issue with it every day. Also my passenger air bag is always off , no matter if someone who is 50 lbs or 250 lbs it is always off and I can not get it to come on . Finally when using my turn signals my blinkers work but never go off unless I manually do it myself. And I fo not get a warning sound telling me that my blinker is still on . It will stay on for hours if I do not notice it and I am driving long distance.

The dashboard covering has deteriorated to the point it is sticky and shiny. Sun glare on the dash reflects off the windshield making it difficult to see. This is a known defect of this make, model and year. State of florida settled with the manufacturer and owner's cars were repaired.

The dashboard is melting and creates a glare on the windshield, making it difficult and dangerous when driving on a sunny day. The glare is such that anyone or thing in front of the vehicle is very hard to see.

While driving down the highway at about 60 mph the vehicle shut off and has not restarted in almost 2 weeks. There was no indication or warning of any engine trouble prior to it shutting off. Luckily, I was getting off an exit and nobody was injured. Had I not been exciting the highway, there would have most certainly been a multi vehicle accident with severe injuries and possibly even death because of the high speeds. Once the car was completely stopped and off towards the shoulder I tried to restart but got a fast clicking noise, but wouldn't start. Let the car sit for a little tried to jump start it, but now the key indicator was being displayed which means the car wasn't recognizing the key even in the slot. This leads me to believe the security system/ immobilizer could've been what caused it to shut off. The car has not been looked at yet. Still waiting for Nissan dealer to diagnose it.

Melting dashboard causing sun & lights to reflect in face when driving.

Dash board melting , becomes sticky and puts off a severe glare in the windshield. Class action lawsuit in florida identified this as a design issue and made Nissan responsible due to dashboard melting under heat from sun.

The dashboard is actually melting and becoming sticky nothing is able to clean it this causes a very shiny reflection of the sun that bounces back on the windshield making it hard to see at times therefore being a hazard.

The transmission is giving me problems.

The dashboard is starting to melt. I thought it was just dirty, but in fact, when I tried cleaning it, a sticky glue type substance came up. This has become a safety hazard as the shiny glare shines on the windshield making it hard to see. I did a basic search on the internet to find out that this is a common issue with my vehicle.

My 2008 Nissan Altima coupe 2. 5s' dashboard is melting giving off toxic fumes and making my visibility terrible while driving because the melting/sticky dashboard reflects into the windshield and Nissan refuses to fix it for free. The reflection in the windshield is particularly worse when driving towards the sun to the point where I cannot see anything while driving. I bought the vehicle with the dashboard like that because I figured that gooey gone could fix it but it didn't. Again Nissan refuses to fix this problem and it is very dangerous while driving.

Transmission revs out and slow to accelerate.

Reflective dashboard that is melting from the sunlight causing it to be very sticky, gummy, & shiny. Causing a blinding glare on the windshield & effecting my visibility to see where I'm driving & I can not see other persons or vehicles. It a safety hazard to me other people I meet in the road & also a health hazard to me from having to breath, inhale the toxic chemicals that are coming out of the material of the dashboard. I bought this used from a private owner, on consignment at a used car lot pinellas county FL may 2020. The previous owner installed a dashboard mat to cover up the melting, cracking dashboard, after 5 years of ownership, the dashboard is in serious degraded condition worse when I purchased it. I was unaware of the class action lawsuit 2017 over the safety concerns. Obvious resale value will be an issue as well. I continue to maintain this vehicle with 176,000 miles. I wanted to add my vehicle to the NHTSA complaint against Nissan for this issue and the loss of value upon resale. That would be great if NHTSA gets Nissan to issue nation wide recall, but given Nissan dire financial issues, it's unlikely they will recall for this issue.

When I get into the car and push the start button, the car turns on but the ready is not signaling and the car doesn't move. The car was driving perfectly the day before and now the car won't move. There also a weird buzzing type sound when I press the break.

Hello my car is a 2008 Nissan Altima my dashboard is melting get in the point that is difficulty to see because the reflection of the sun, is getting so bad now can some one help me. I when to the Nissan were I bough it they telll me that I have to pay 2,000 to 3000 to replace the whole dashboard I think this is a matter of the dealers or the corporate of Nissan please can some one help me cuz I can afford tho buy another car. The dashboard of the car melted that causes a very bright glare.

My car has a sticky,clear substance all over it from where the vents are to the windshield. It is dangerous because it causes a glare and when the sun is out especially it is extremely hard to see. I have tried everything to get it off and nothing is working. I didn't spill anything on it either for it to be this way. It just started happening.

Our 2008 Nissan Altima dashboard has melted leaving it sticky and shiny causing distracting and glaring reflections off their windshields. I'll taking it to dealership twice about dashboard but they stated they was unaware of any issue with this vehicle dashboard. The second time I told them about the multiple lawsuits I found on-line and they directed my to Nissan consume department. Nissan told me the unit was out warranty and will not assist.

An incident has not occurred yet, thankfully. The dashboard in my 2008 Nissan Altima is melting and causes a glare on the dash and a horrible smell in my car. This is a safety concern not only for myself but for everyone. When the sun hits the dash and causes a glare, the glare can impair my vision on the road. I had a close call and do not want another close call.

The dashboard area on the car is completely breaking down and melting. This melting has created a very dangerous shine and reflection on the front windshield (along with an odor). Its become so bad then on many days its difficult to see the car or objects in front of you or you simply cannot see almost causing accidents. This is dangerous and clearly a manufacture defect that has been well documented and in some states was a class action lawsuit. It needs to be a national recall! someone is going to get seriously hurt and the information is available that proves this is a blatant problem. It is the vehicle safety authorities responsibility to force a remedy for this issue before an innocent individual is killed. Nissanusa has refused to remedy or accept responsibility for this expensive issue when contacted. Lives are at risk! the consumer is being ignored. My car is predominate garage kept with under 100k on it, this should not be an issue. Something needs to be done immediately. Clearly business interests are more important then consumer safety.

I was driving down a dirt road and my car died I tried to start it back up but it wouldn't do anything I can't turn on any lights unlock or lock the car nothing. Shows a light on the dash that looks like the key fob and looked it up and it says that something under the steering column can cause the issues and has a recall.

While driving at low speed, my sunroof exploded. It was closed at the time, and fortunately sun shade closed so glass did not fall in on me. Reading many others with Nissan cars dealign with this. No cars in front of me, so not debris hitting could have caused.

The dashboard in the car is melting.

The front dashboard is melting and very sticky to the touch. A glare results on the windshield during sunny days, which is an extreme hazard. I can't see large portions of what's in front of me due to the glare. This issue is well documented on the web and needs to be addressed by Nissan.

Driving down the highway and my sunroof just seemed to have exploded. We just head a loud pop and shattered glass. We did not see anything hit it and there's no rocks or anything yo be found.

Melting dashboard, very sticky, everything sticks to it and the top layer (vinyl?) that is melting comes up when something sticks to it and is removed. The dash is very shiny, causing extreme glare on windshield. Glare very bad, lowers visibility, dangerous. The hotter the days, the stickier, more shiny this gets. Even when putting up a sunshade, the dash gets worse and worse. Photo taken on 9/7/2020 attached shows how bad glare is.
