36 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2016

My wife was driving her 2009 Nissan Altima and parked. When leaving to go home, the car would not and could not start. The key lock symbol (red) and lock symbol (yellow) were lit on the dashboard. I did some research and found that the it was the steering column lock which many has been complaining about. I took it to the Nissan dealer and the part would be $600. 00. Attached is the printout of the warranty. This had me and my wife stranded on one of the coldest day of the year. They wouldn't consider fixing it unless it was a standard repair. This is crazy!!! it's the holidays and now this is happening. Good grief!!!.

37 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

I went to the mall to drop off a painting and my car wouldn't start when I left and was giving me the key indicator so after a 20 second search on google I found that a lot of Nissan owners had the same problem as me, which was the steering wheel column not receding to where it should be in order to lock the wheel. I think its absurd the piece is 600 at the dealership and 400 online. Then the key needs to be reprogrammed, if I would have known about such a tedious problem that Nissan was not accepting responsibility for, I would have just gotten another kind of car.

38 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2016

Car stalled twice both parked in a parking lot. Battery works and key fob works with doors. But engine wont start with push button start. Electronic steering column lock defect.

39 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

When parking in reverse, car does not start after 2 minutes. The electronis steering column lock unit (escl) malfunctions and shows error symbol on dashboard showing that immobilizer is activated and steering is locked. It is unsafe, dangerous and scary situation. I have family, with little kids in the car and stranded on side of a road, with car parked while the traffic is flying by. Nissan dealership and service center representative informed that there is no warranty and no recall. The cost of replacing steering wheel lock system is $1250. 00. This can not done by any other repair shops as all the parts must come from Nissan. It is a Nissan monopoly and ransom to get this repaired.

40 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2016

I change my radiator 2 times - and they change the steering column lock and they charge me 1,200 . I have change the pressure sensors couple times . This always happen when I was driving.

41 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2016

The car will not start when I push on the brake and push the button for it to start. The dealer says it is the steering column lock module. It was in a stationary position but we were stranded and had to get the car towed.

42 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

Car will not start because of the electronis steering column lock unit (escl) this is very unsafe I could have been with my children at a unsafe area for Nissan to tell me warranty is not avaiable anymore. The price to get this fix is 1200 this is so unfair if its a Nissan issue.

43 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2016

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while in park, the vehicle failed to start as "key fob" was displayed across the message board. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 50,000. Oo.

44 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2016

My electronic steering column lock has malfunctioned for the second time. This malfunction does not allow the car to recognize the key fob, preventing ignition. I was stranded in a remote part of a forest preserve and because my car would not start I had to hike out 6 miles until I got cell phone coverage and could call for help. This problem happened to me previously in 2011. At that point Nissan had covered this repair as part of a lifetime extended warranty on the electronic steering column lock, but they decided in January 2016 to cancel this warranty.

45 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

I have Nissan Altima 2009. My car was parked at home and just would not start. Able to open doors with key fob but not start with the push button. Found the electronic steering column lock was the problem and needed to be replaced. Cost me $1100 to fix it. Nissan has known about this problem and had extended warranty on this part to 6 years, without informing the customers. I realized this when the part had a problem in the 7th year and Nissan denied to cover the costs. Thank fully this happened at my home. Would have been extremely dangerous if I was travelling with my family had the problem at an isolated place.

46 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2016

After leaving a doctor's apt on 4 oct, I get to my car and it want start. The intelligent key warning is lit up o the instrument panel and when I hit the push start button, the lock light is illuminated and I cannot push the brake pedal down. The steering column is completely locked. I recalled getting a letter from Nissan extending the warranty on the escl fro 6yrs/unlimited mileage. Nevertheless, I had to have my car towed to Nissan and as of today they are telling me that the extended warranty has expired. How is that possible when I got the letter a year after I purchased the car. So now I am stuck with paying $900-1200 to get this fixed. Nissan should be ashamed of themselves and should do a recall. I am so disappointed in Nissans response and service and I was looking at buying a new car at the end of the year from them. But they will not get my business.

47 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

Electric steering column lock (escl) failed and left me stranded at work. Had to wait 2 hours for someone to come get me.

48 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2016

The electrical steering column lock (escl) failure which wouldn't allow the car to start is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. And that Nissan wouldn't recall it is a big shame on the manufacturer. On top of that, they charge ridiculously expensive to have the part replaced ($600+labor)??!! this is super unsafe for drivers in the northeast as we may get stuck in a cold winter freezing to death for what? there is even no mechanic problem with the car. Just a little wedge-like thing that wouldn't drop to where it's supposed to be???? ridiculous!!.

49 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2016

Escl - electronic steering column lock I went to the store far from home and when I tried starting the car it did not start. The door locks worked but nothing else would come on. I checked online and it stated that it was escl. I put in a used one and it worked. I would like Nissan to replace that part with a new part. I was stranded for hours and had to leave my car in the store parking lot for 3 days.

51 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2016

The Altima is equipped with an electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft. Escl may malfunction after the vehicle is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. This condition, should it occur, will only occur when attempting to start the vehicle, and not while driving. I turned on my car and took my 6 month old daughter to the doctor as she was running a high fever. Upon leaving the doctor¿s office at 12a. M. I pushed my start button to turn on my vehicle and it was unresponsive. I was left in the dark unable to operate my vehicle in the middle of the night with my 6 m month old baby. The parking I was in did not allow for overnight parking and I was alone with my baby. Upon researching Nissan had extended the warranty to the electronics steering column lock to 6 years unlimited miles from 3 years 36,000 miles warranty. I no longer fall on that and I am having this issue. Nissan says I am out of warranty and there is nothing they can do for me. According to their annoucement this is a ¿manufacturing irregularity¿ that now I have to find a way to pay. I have no savings to pay for such part and the towing already cost me a handful and put my baby in a dangerous situation. I am a single mom and truly upset with the situation. . Read more...

52 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2016

My 2009 Nissan Altima is currently having issues with the defects in the electronic steering column lock (escl). The car just cut off on me as I was parking in a parking spot. Luckily I was able to force the gear in park. It disabled the push-button ignition on my car and locked my steering column. So, I was stranded! this is big safety issue because my car could've just continued to roll if I couldn't get it into the parked gear! it's unfair that as a consumer of Nissan, I have to experience this issue after the Nissan warranty on the escl expired in March 2015 and be posed with paying over $1000 in repair costs. Per Nissan, there was no specific mileage number that this defect could occur; so they should recall the escl systems in all affected cars instead of covering their own behinds and giving a warranty with unlimited miles and an end date of March 2015. Clearly Nissan is not concerned with its consumers safety. It's not fair to consumers that bought Nissan vehicles that experience the dangerous defect after March 2015. I am a very unhappy consumer at this time.

53 Steering Column problem

59 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2016

My 2009 Nissan Altima would not start for me today while I was on my way to atlanta. I stopped for gas and once I hopped on my car, in an unknown location, my car would not start. I haven't had any signs or issue with my car since I bought it 3 years ago. After waiting for hours in a town in which was very creepy I've finally found out it was my escl (electric steering column lock). Not only did I have to get my car towed way back to north carolina, I also ended up paying an arm and a leg at Nissan!!! come to find out everyone with a 2009 Altima has had this problem it seems like! they extended the warranty for a few months and that ended a year ago! I got nothing in the mall from Nissan regarding this so I was totally unaware of the defect! this has been a liability for me and my family being that I've spent over $1000 getting this done as well as towing fees! Nissan has to do something about this defect or else their will be thousands more than end up stranded who knows where because of Nissans defects! and their irresponsibility of their product!!.

62 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2016

This complaint is being filed in reference to the defective steering column lock (part # 48700-9n00a) on this car. When this component fails, it leaves you stranded by being unable to start the car. I had just ended my late shift only to find that my car would not start. Fortunately nothing happened to me, but this put me in a situation that could have ended very badly, as I had to wait for someone to come pick me up. Nissan obviously knew of this problem because they extended the warranty and also improved the part, (now part #48700-9n00b); but I believe that a defective part, which they acknowledged as such by extending the warranty, should have been replaced through a recall. From the number of people on-line who have also been affected, I would think they would do this recall just to keep the customer satisfied. I know I will be looking at other brands for my next car.

63 Steering Column problem

65 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2016

Approximately 2-2. 5 weeks ago an indicator light with a picture of a key and the word "key" appeared on my dash. It stayed on for about an hour that morning but then disappeared. It drove fine however I wanted to make sure I took the appropriate action. I looked online and read about people having problems with the steering column so I contacted the service department at the dealership immediately. The employee/mechanic that I spoke with told me I just needed to change the battery in the fob and guaranteed me that was the problem. I mentioned that I was aware of many people having issues with the steering column locking on them and he laughed and said that was not the problem in my case and that I simply needed a new battery. I asked if I should bring it in just to be safe and he said no just change the battery. I changed the battery and it drove fine however when I went to start my car this morning the light was on again and now my steering column has locked up on me. I called the dealerships service department again today and the guy I spoke with confirmed that was what that indicator light warning means. He said now that it's locked I have no choice but to tow it into the dealership and they will have to replace the escl. They are telling me it will cost me $1200 to fix. I feel Nissan needs to be held accountable for their faulty parts and should be forced to do a recall and replace these parts since it is a frequent and continuous issue.

66 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2016

2009 Nissan Altima have known issues with their steering columns (escl) being defective. I went to my sons elementary school to pick him up. I turned off the car went in to the school to get him. I came back out to my car and it wouldn't start. Their was a key light that came on that told me it had something to do with the key or the steering column. I waited for my daughter to bring me the other key so that I could find out if it was the key fob and it wasn't. I had to have the car towed to the dealership and they told me there was a problem with the steering column. After reading online, I found that this is a known issue with the car and that Nissan gave a limited extended warranty to replace it, which has expired. However, that is not enough in my opinion. This is a serious safety concern. I was lucky and this happened to me in a familiar surrounding area and I had a cell phone to call my daughter. However what if this was to happen to someone who doesn't know their surrounding area. What if it was an elderly person and the light came on while you were driving, and they pull over to check out what is going on, turn off your car and then try and start it again and the car is completely dead and they don't have a cell phone to call for help. There is a known defect in the 2009 Nissan Altima that could have drastic consequences in the end. The fact that there is no prior notification or warning that there is a problem with the vehicle and that at any moment the vehicle will not restart and strand the person is a big safety concern. What if I had pulled over in a remote area and the vehicle would not have restarted, the area had no cell coverage and I had no food or water in my vehicle. This is clearly a safety concern that needs to addressed.

67 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2016

"tamara recall" I'm a nurse and I was dressed and ready for work upon arrival to my car my fob allowed me to unlock my door but whom I got in and attempted to start my car I noticed I couldn't press my breaks they were tight and steering wheel was also locked. I pressed the push to start button but nothing happened I looked at the information center and only noticed a amber key light up and lock light on around the start button. I have no other way to work and its pass my clear call out time to work but I have to call my don crying because I can't get to work I don't know what's wrong with my car it won't do anything. I'm a nurse my patients depend upon me being there to help them a well as my fellow nurses and doctors!! I had to call a tow truck to take my car to the Nissan dealership and I was told it was the steering column lock. I asked him how much would it cost to repair he said 800 dollars. I'm a single mother with a son who is a senior in high school it's his spring break week, I have pictures, class rings, announcement, cap and gown, prom etc to pay for but I need my car to get to work!! I don't want favors, want what's right!! a 6yr/ unlimited mileage is a cheap way out. Nissan knew and knows about this manufacturer defect but still out these cars on the road not really caring or concern about what the results could be. . I've been a nurse for over 10 yrs, so does people have be stranded be it old or young with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or even someone who requires use of oxygen to breathe/live to die and family members sue Nissan before a recall is issued? prevention saves more lives and its a lot less expensive. Thank god for all these petitions pages with 100s and 1000 of signatures along with people sharing their stories about this unfair too off to people!! I expect a class action lawsuit soon.

68 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2016

I was in a parking lot, at night, trying to return home, when the vehicle would not start. The ignition switch won't press even though all lights in car worked. A quick search on the internet for symptoms showed its a problem with the electronic steering lock column in the 09 Altima that lots & lots of people are facing. Nissan is not offering free replacements for the part. The dealer also told me they get hundreds of complaints every week and the replacement cost of $1000 has to be paid by the owner. The car company knows there is a part in their car that can malfunction anyday leaving the vehicle not started but they are not replacing it. You never know where you might be when the vehicle does not start - late in night and stranded in a parking lot on a rainy day is what happened to me. Please look into this complaint, the safety of owners and trust factor with their car is at stake.
