1 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

2003 Nissan Altima. Consumer expresses concern that other 2003 Nissan Altima vehicles were not identified or included in campaigns related to the airbag/driver control module, airbag sensor and the crankshaft position sensor the consumer stated her vehicle was serviced at the dealer due to the continuous flashing of the air bag light. The dealer informed the consumer the air bag sensor was defective. As a result, the entire unit needed to be replaced. The consumer stated her vehicle was excluded from the air bag recall even though the vehicle was manufactured in 2002. On January 15, 2010 the vehicle began displaying problems such as difficulty cranking, sudden jerks while accelerating and loss of power. On January 16, 2010 the service engine light later illuminated. Testing revealed a defective crankshaft sensor. Also, the O2 sensor and catalytic converter had to be replaced.

The contact took the vehicle to the repair shop and they discovered that the oxygen sensor failed. The oxygen sensor was replaced; however, the vehicle continued to shut off. On August 1, 2008, the vehicle would not accelerate in traffic and was rear ended. The contact's vehicle was pushed into the preceding vehicle. The contact and three passengers received minor injuries. She received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 07v527000 (engine and engine cooling) two weeks after the crash. The insurance company did not investigate. A report was filed with the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were 103,000. Updated 03/24/09. Updated 03/24/09.

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

Tl *- the contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. While driving at 40 mph the contact attempted to accelerate and the vehicle lost power. The check engine light illuminated. This failure occurred 8 times. The contact smelled exhaust fumes in the vehicle while driving. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, who incorrectly diagnosed the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer, who was aware of the related recall #06v242000, for the ecm. The dealer stated that they were unable to repair the vehicle without authorization from the manufacturer. The contact was advised by the customer service department to leave a message for the regional representative, and after 3 attempts she hasn't received a response. The contact was aware that she could be eligible for reimbursement. The current and failure mileage was 79,720.

4 Emission Control problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/20/2006

I was making a left-hand turn at an intersection at 12:00 midnight on a Sunday and depressed the accelerator pedal nearly to the floor and as the car down shifted, the car lurched. The check engine light illuminated and immediately noticed that the transmission seemed crippled. I was able to drive home, but the engine would not rev over 2300 rpm and the transmission had a difficult time shifting. We took the car to a Nissan dealer and were told that the mass air flow sensor had failed. After doing some research, we found that the failure of the mass air flow sensor on Nissan Altima's and maxima's is not uncommon. The repair bill was over $1300 for diagnostics of the problem, labor and parts. I am extremely displeased that this issue is much too common to be overlooked as being a recall item. Luckily, there was no traffic around me at the time of the incident, otherwise, there could have been a car accident as that intersection is a high-volume intersection.

5 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/31/2006

I was turning right when all of a sudden my car starts choking and sputtering and the service engine soon light came on, slip light came on, and the traction control light came on. I slowed down and it seemed to work alright but when I got up to 35-40 mph the car started sputtering again and wouldn't go faster than 35 mph. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off and started it back up and had the same problem. Luckily there was not much traffic around and I was close to home so I drove back to my house. Later that night I went to start the car and it started but immediately died, started it again and it immediately died, started it a third time and it immediately died, but on the fourth try it started and stayed running. That next morning I had the car towed to a Nissan dealership and explained the problem to them. The called me back the next day and told me that they have to replace the mass air flow sensor on the car at a price of $700. 00 + tax. I have read many car forums and this problem with the mass air flow sensor failing seems to happen a lot on 2002-2003 Nissan Altimas. I think there should be a recall on the mass air flow sensor because with a car having this problem could cause a major accident. Reading the forums it sounds like Nissan fixed the problems on the 2004 and newer Altimas so why can't they fix them on the 2002 and 2003 models?.

6 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/15/2005

1) normal driving - sel light came on p0304 and rough engine idle 2) intake manifold gasket failed - poor idle - will not pass emission test - 60k miles 3) replaced gasket after finding many other owners had same problem even after 32k miles. Nissan should fix this under an extended warranty but they refused. Here are details of the issue: there is an engineering or material defect on the ka24de engine in regards to the intake manifold gasket. From reading the posts of dozens of owners it appears it is happening to engines made in the 00-01 time frame. If this were just some random problem then you would expect to see about the same number of posts on p0304 and gasket leaks for any year car. Just about all the posts concern specifically 00-01. The first hand evidence I had is when I took off my intake manifold and checked the condition of the gasket. The side with the leak was at cylinder 4. When I took off the gasket, the material at the cylinder 4 side was what I can only describe as "baked". It was hard and brittle and would just crack or snap very easily. The closer the gasket was to the number 1 cylinder it remained more pliable. Obviously the gasket seems to hold up better closer to cylinder 1 because it is cooler there - that is where the passage for the coolant is. This problem causes a p0304 code to get thrown. That is a misfire at cylinder 4. Again, if this were some random problem - couldn't we reasonably expect a normal distribution of the cylinder misfire code from p0301, 302, 303, and 304? but that is not the case. I don't think I have seen any posts on anything other than p0304. There is extra heat around cylinder 4 above what the gasket material is rated for - which is an engine design issue. 2 cars verified so far happen to be California emission vehicles it seems plausible that the extra heat is related to the emission control devices these cars have - specifically the extra cat converter.

8 Emission Control problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/14/2005

The contact owned a 2005 Nissan Altima. The car intermittently happened on the freeway driving at 65 mph. This incident happened twice, once was in los angeles, and once in las vegas. The engine restarted after the incident about 45 minutes to 1 hour later. After it restartd it will drive for a couple of minutes and shut down again. According to the dealership ,they repaired it twice. Already the first time they repaired vehicle it was a key problem, but he knew that it was not. The second time changed the electronic control module ( ecm). The vehicle is now ready to be taking back to the dealer the third time. The manufacturer said that he could not turn in the car, and they did not care.

10 Emission Control problem of the 1996 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/01/2002

Nissan Altima 1996: the catalytic converter is too new to go bad and there are too many bad ones showing up. I had to replace it at a very high cost to me, when the vehicle was only 6 years old.
