Nissan Altima owners have reported 38 problems related to engine belts and pulleys (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Altima based on all problems reported for the Altima.
I have a 2016 Nissan Altima. First: I was involved in an accident in which a regular truck hauling an enclosed trailer drove over a large piece of plywood on the interstate at 70mph in front of me (also going about 70 mph) causing the piece of plywood to raise off of the road after he cleared it and it flew into the front of my vehicle and bounced up onto the hood and then hit the roof before flying off of my car. During this process, pieces of the plywood became stuck in the grill area of my car. There were no injuries, thankfully, but I am concerned the airbags did not deploy. Second: I've had this car since July of 2019. Over the past 6 months I have noticed that when I press the gas, the rpms rise but the transmission takes a bit to shift into gear causing a lag in acceleration. I have also noticed that if I am at a light or a stop and shift into drive sport, it doesn't do this. I have gotten in the habit of shifting into the sport mode when accelerating from a stop sign or red light. Third: my daughter was hit today by a truck crossing lanes to turn in front of her. She was traveling at appx 35 mph. The truck hit my passenger side front area, destroying my headlight, bumper, and grill. It was hit hard and the airbags did not deploy. The seatbelt did not lock, causing her to bounce forward and smack her head on the steering wheel. I am concerned now about the seatbelts and airbags and am more worried that they are defective after reading other complaints about these same issues. I love my car, but it doesn't seem to be very safe at all.

At first we thought it was the belt because the belt from coming off you change the serpentine belt and then it would run for a little bit then it started to stop and not be able to get enough fuel to the gas pedal and I'd have to rev it up. We opened it up where the spark plugs were on the valve covers and it was halfway full of oil we got all the oil out when we ordered a new valve cover and spark plugs the car run fine for one day now it will not start again. The fan turns on like it is running but there is no power to the car at all. I read that after the oil gets into the valve covers there's really no fixing it after that. And every time that we fix it only last for one day and so it's very dangerous for me and my daughter to be driving around in that unreliable car what can I do about the recall.

When pushing the gas on the highway or the streets it feels like the power of the car is holding back. Feels like the gears are messing up. And there's problem with catalyst converter. It's always showing check engine light even after I have tried other solutions on fixing that and the gas odometer is not reading the gas levels right either. Plus the passenger seat buckle is stuck and doesn't latch to the seat belt for a hold from a car accident. Like you have to really push hard for the seat belt to hold on.

Passenger light airbag is never detected. (been on going for a couple of years) engine light stays on (for about 3 months) seatbelt airbag (3 months) will not go out. There is never a recall and a problem is never found by mechanic. Can get the engine light off for a little while, but comes back on usually within a week.
So I purchased my car in 2014 at tony Nissan waipio and had cna manufactured warranty. . Which is a good warranty. But I come to realize ever since. My manufactured warranty expired in 2019, and I routinely bring my car in for oil and oil filter maintenance every 3 months, and each time I would bring it in. Mechanics and service advisors seems to find a lot of problems with my car. . And ask if I wanted it to be fixed or replaced, majority of the time. I will asked if my aul warranty will cover, for the parts and labors. . I would say 80 percent of my warranty covers. . Some. Dont. But to make my complaint shorter . . Each time I would bring it in to tony Nissan for a repair. . Not even 3 months after, another problems. Come about. . At this time I'm getting very scared and afraid for my safety in driving my car. Especially. When I have my 6 year old grandson that I pick up from school. . And I'm beginning to not have faith in them and I'm really having trust issues, with either the mechanics or service advisors. . At tony Nissan . I can show proofs of documents that I have all my invoices dated from 2014 until now of 2020. . Of all services and repairs they have claimed they doned on my car. . Just recently I asked for my old parts back, to see if they got it replaced. . Throttle body assembly and ignition coil #3. . My upcoming repair will be alternator and drive belt. . I will be taking my car in either 02/25/2020 or 02/26/2020. . In the afternoon. Thank you very much, for the help and concerns. Please reply back to me if my car was sold to me as a lemon or any recalls. . I've be glad to express my concerns to the president of that company. . But I always get talked to the other staffs that works for him. . .

I was in a bumper to bumper accident and the front end of my car was smooched in. My chest hit the steering wheel (my seat belt was buckled) knocking the air out of me, but my airbags did not deploy. We have taken our car into the dealership several times to complain about the passenger airbag sensor. Every time we get it back we get the same answer "we don't see anything wrong with the sensor". We recently took our car in 2 weeks prior to the accident and we asked them if our car was on the air bag recall list that was all over the news. They told us not to worry about anything because our car was not on that list. I ended up in urgent care after the accident with muscles spasms and a bruised chest. Why didn't my airbags go off?!.

Wife was driving west bound on ohio st rt 125 doing 40 mph when a car going east bound on ohio st rt 125 attempted to make a left hand turn in front of her and hit her head on bringing the car to a complete stop in just a couple feet. None of the airbags went off . The seatbelt did not lock up. None of the safety equipment on this car worked during this head on collision.

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The contact also stated that there was an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle and smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe. The vehicle restarted however, the vehicle would not restart the day after the initial failure. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing where it was diagnosed that there was antifreeze on the spark plugs, which indicated that the cylinders under the timing belt were cracked as a result, the head gasket needed to be replaced. The mechanic also stated that the catalytic converter failed and that the debris from the catalytic converter was drawn up into the engine causing damage to the cylinders in the motor, which caused the vehicle to have a blown head gasket. The catalytic converter was replaced, however the motor was not replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
In high traffic area, 4 lanes of traffic and in the far left lane moving about 45, the car dies. I can not get my car to start. Cars were flying on all sides of me even in the turning lane next to me on the left. I could not get out of my car. I called the police because I thought I could be killed. The police said that this was dangerous and managed to stop all lanes of traffic. They bumped my car off the road and called a tow truck. The tow truck took me and my car to Nissan dealership. I had to pay $634. 35 for the tow truck and the crankshaft sensor replacement. No recall. Terrible experience with Nissan customer specialist in TN. Today on 10/9/13 after calling everyday since 9/13/13, I was told that the part is outside of warranty. They will not take responsibility. It is just what happens in maintaining the car. I had just spent almost $1000 in a regular maintenance. The team leader used the example of replacing the timing belt. Don't see why this is the same. I almost got killed and someone might have already lost their life. This is a major safety issue for Nissan! if I was on I 75 I would have been hit by another car. This is a safety issue!.
When sitting the front passsenger seat passenger air bag off sign comes out and randomly disappear, appear repeatedly. Sit the very properly by owner' manual it comes out. It means passenger ait bag is off sign on it will not inflate in a crash. I'm very scary drive this car with someone who sit the passenger seat. Although sitting on the seat properly and useing the seat belt properly it doesn't matters because th epassenger air bag off light always illuminate. It is very dangerous in a crash. I really want to know need air bag for what??? Nissan already recalls some car same issues. I bring my car Nissan dealer, they do nothing and say"this is normal" and have same problems my car's VIN# not include the recalls so they don't fix or replace anything. It is ridiculous. Also Altima has wierd winning high pitch noise all the time and drive low rpm to chang to high rpm makes very loud rumbling knocking noise. It seems like a drive belt and tentioner problems. Dealer say that it is normal. Dealer always say "it is normal". If my warranty is finish they say that it is problems. I really want to solutions.
When starting the car the starter would keep cranking after the release of the start button, the passenger air bag light stays on sometimes even when a passenger is in the seat also the rear seat belts are very hard to lock in do to the receiver end pushes down into the seat when driving there is a few problems the low end rattles and shakes and 45 and above there is a wining noise from the engine compartment that sounds like a bad alt bearing or trans problem it gets louder the faster you go very annoying with today technology these problems and this is just a few is a big step back for Nissan not a happy customer just broke 6000 miles.
There were 3 incidents. First, I was driving on the washington beltway, in October 2012. I was driving about 65 mph. The vehicle stalled and I coasted to the shoulder. I was terrified. Second, I was driving on I-95 at around 50 mph the vehicle would not respond to the accelerator. I gave it gas but nothing happened. I was able to coast to the shoulder. Third, I was once again on the freeway, traveling at speed and the vehicle was non responsive to the accelerator. I coasted and eventually it did respond. The 2010 Nissan Altima is equipped with the cvt. There are hundreds of complaints all around the internet about this very same problem. . Read more...

I own a 2005 Nissan Altima with only 51,570 miles and I noticed a strange sound coming from the engine. I use top grade gas and have had the oil changed every 3000-3500 miles. I took it to a shop and found that it was the tentioner for the timing belt. Have he got to the item he showed me where the hard plastic clip had busted off and had the allowed the timing belt to become sloppy. Thank god I had a extended warranty so it was covered however, now I notice I am using excessive oil. I only now have 51,880 miles and had to add 1 qt oil. In checking with web sites it is a common problem with the pre-cats causing issues and Nissan is aware but will not do a recall on the vehicle. It is a design flaw and should be covered by Nissan.
One morning I stated the car and stated hearing strange noise from the engine compartment. Apparently it's the timing chain noise. Car only had 84000, had a 02 maxima same engine over 100k never had a problem reading review looks like a lot of people have the same issue with 05 Nissan with 3. 5 timing chain should be good at least for 100k, that's why it's not a belt suppose to be more reliable. Nhtsa should look at having Nissan offer a recall on the 3. 5 made in 05.
2008 Nissan Altima sedan belt tensioner bolts failed. One bolt still located in the tensioner pulley hole along with a piece of either the back timing cover or the lower engine cover. Firestone and Nissan claim to be astonished how this happened. Damages are now estimated to be in the range of $3,900 with 20 hours of labor to remove the engine and replace the cover.

Approximately a month ago, while driving my car I heard a whining sound coming from the engine upon acceleration of the vehicle. The sound would stop when I took my foot off the gas pedal. I took the car to my local mechanic to have it checked out. He took all the belts surrounding the engine off (the drive belt etc. ) to see if the sound was related to a defect in one of the belts; the sound persisted and he said it was coming from the timing cover. My mechanic said that he has seen this problem before with the Nissan Altima so I decided to file a complaint.
2009 Altima 2. 5 sl. Consumer writes in regards to entering Nissan's consumer arbitration process
the consumer stated the dealer had the vehicle on November 15, and 16, 2011 to inspect and repair a chronic mechanical issue that had been going on for the past 16 months. The vehicle would make a popping sound after the engine was warm, when the vehicle sat idle or turned off. While removing the initial heat shield rivets and replacing them with larger rivets, it resulted in a slightly muted popping noise. The consumer was concerned that overtime, the expansion and contraction of the metal surfaces will weaken and potentially fail. The dealer replaced the sepentine belt, tensioner and exhaust system, but the noise continued.

2005 Nissan Altima timing chain broke at 83,000 miles. The car began making a noise and the next day I was at a red light and when I tried to go the engine shut off. Luckily I did not cause an accident at 5:15 afternoon traffic. I had to have the car towed. The mechanic later told me that the timing chain broke. I have looked on many Nissan forums and this has been very common for '05 Altimas. The chain broke into many pieces and invaded the engine. This is now a cost of thousands of dollars for my family. Nissan apparently fixed this problem in their Altimas, but it still remains a problem in their 2005 models. I think the Nissan company should have to replace these belts and repay anyone for any damage it may have caused.
My brand new Nissan Altima a/c stop working just for not reason after driving it for like 20 minutes but I thought was alright the out of nowhere the engine start to overheat all the way to the h, my car is an brand new Altima 2. . Read more...
The heater/ ac had many problems, almost yearly-needed to be blown out & anti freeze added. Head gasket was replaced at 60,000 & cylinder had to be replaced, timing chain tension repair. Now engine & timing belt need to be replaced @$4800. 00 65,000 miles-doesn't seem right!

My car shut of on me while driving at night which was hard to see because the headlamps didn't give much light and both airbags deployed and my seat belts don't work either. . . I own a 2003 Nissan Altima. . . The car would usually turn of on me like that but not a higher speeds. . . The car's engine has been making a loud noise it had 3 recalls for it( headlamp recall, engine exhaust recall, & engine cooling recall) before I had this done I had a service engine light on which came out as p0420, p0240, and had 3 p0335. . . After I had the "recall done". . . A week later my car "blew a head gasket" and I had a code p0300. . . I immediately got it fixed for like $1300. . . After that. . . 2 weeks later I got a service engine light on which came out as p0335, p0240, & p0420. . . I've also been in contact with Nissan consumer affairs. . . I've been in touch with a regional specialist which can't really help me at all. . . Nissan dealer like to take money for diagnosis and tells me the car is unsafe to drive. . . My car still shuts off and sometimes it doesn't even start. . . When the car start up it makes a loud engine noise. . . So right now my car shuts off at any speed rate now just low speeds, I don't have airbags in the car, engine makes a loud noise, sounds like there's something like a rock in the catalytic converter, and my car's seat belts don't work.
2005 Nissan Altima has issues with tires and wheel alignment. Consumer states that the customer service is not good with phone calls. The consumer stated she was on her third set of tires at 22,000 miles. The technician stated the vehicle had weak axles and were often mis-aligned at the factory. Even with the proper maintenance, the mis-alignment would return. The consumer stated the vehicle would not start. It was later determined that the crank position sensor was the cause. The consumer attempted to install a car seat, but she soon discovered, the rear seat belt did not catch as it should have and it did not recoil when it was not being used. The fan would blow and work in all positions, but the only time it would blow warm or hot air was when the accelerator was in use and running for 10-15 minutes. The windows would defrost on the outside, but not the inside. It would form a thin layer of ice and fog that had to be scraped or wiped with warm water, or it would eventually fade after driving for some time.
I was driving on the highway traveling 65mph when all of a sudden there was a loud popping sound and I could hear noise under the car, all the lights on my dash lit up, check engine light, coolant light, battery, I then lost power steering and lost acceleration, cars were speeding by me and I coasted to the off ramp. I got towed to the dealer but service dept was closed because it was Sunday. The following day the service dept. Called and said the car was repaired. My husband went to get the car and they had said that it was the retentioner belt and that the pulley had sheared off. They said they had a customer the week before with the same problem. We also understand that Nissan was aware of this faulty part.
In late 2007, I would have to start up my 2002 Nissan Altima a couple of times before it would crank up. On the way home one day, as I was getting on the interstate my car shut off at low speed. I reviewed my problem online and found a recall for the exact same problem. I took it in to the dealership thinking that this would be a free fix, nooottt! it just so happens that my VIN was not on the recall. I paid about $300 to fix this problem. This year I have had nothing but problems. Around may I had my engine light to come on. My belt would also start to rattle whenever the car would be stopped in drive with the a/c on. This would not occur when the car was in park or neutral, only in drive. The rattling would go away once the car was moving, but as soon as you stop, there it was again. If you turn the a/c off when you are stopped, the rattling would go away. I took the car to the dealership again. They diagnosed the problem as having to replace a blown head gasket and the front right engine mount. Both were replaced at a cost to me for $1,300. 00. The next day, my engine light comes on again. I took it to the dealership again and this time it was the cat converter with O2 sensor that needed to be replaced. This was fixed for $1,000. 00. Of course my belt rattling problem was not repaired yet. Took the car back again and after spending 2 hours at Nissan talking to the mechanic, he said that tensioner pulley needed to be replaced. After $200. 00, the rattling problem is still there. I am out of ideas of what the problem could be with my car to stop the rattling noise, and I think the mechanic at Nissan feels the same way. By the way, my sister has a 2003 Nissan Altima and her car is the doing the exact same rattling noise. This must be a problem with Nissan and not with individual cars. Please help hold Nissan responsible for all the problems that their cars have!!!!.
My niece took our Altima to California (less than 2,000 miles on it at this time). The cars belt was broken when the tensioner pulley broke off of the engine. This caused the power steering to fail and overheated the engine. It has been in mossey Nissan's shop in el cajon for three weeks now due to back ordered parts.
On 2/5/08 we started our 2004 Nissan Altima and had no power steering. Upon observation the serpentine belt was not turning. We had the car towed to the mechanic and found that the bolt on the main pulley on the crankshaft had fallen out and the pulley had fallen off of the crankshaft. Had this occurred while driving down the interstate at 65mph, the results could have been horrific possibly leading to fatalities.

Tensioner from engine that creates tension to the belt fell off while I my wife was driving the car. The steering wheel locked.
I heard a noise while I was on the highway it sounded like something fell off but the car only had 600 miles on it so I just thought it was a rock or something in the road that got kicked up. About a minute later my accessory belt that controls the power steering, the water pump, the alternator and the tensioner pulley flew off. After getting towed to the dealer I found out that the pulley broke off which cause the belt to come off. I had the tensioner pulley and the belt replaced, but now it seems it may have cause another problem when shifting in reverse now it makes a clunking noise (it is going into the shop for this problem this weekend).
My vehicle started to have a hard shift while I was riding down the beltway. The car would shift so hard that it felt like someone had hit my car from behind. Approximately two weeks later the "service engine soon" light came on. I took it to sheehy Nissan of waldorf and had the car repaired. That cost me around $170. 00. About two weeks later the hard shifts were back. One and a half months later my "service engine light" comes back on and this time my car will not start. I was literally stuck until I was informed that eventually the computer will click and let the car start. I eventually got the car to start and took it to the Nissan dealer. I was informed that the crankshaft position sensor was bad. I have to pay another $230. 00. To get my car back. The problem is that they have recalled this same problem on the 2002 and the 2003 Nissan Altima but not on the 2004.
The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Altima. While driving 65 mph a loud noise was heard coming from the engine. The vehicle shut off and was towed to a mechanic. The mechanic stated that the three bolts holding the fan belt pulley tensions failed. The vehicle had been in the shop for three weeks, and the mechanic stated that they were unable to get the bolts or parts for the repair. The current mileage is 44,100, and failure mileage was 3,971.
I have had nothing but problems from my 2005 Altima that I purchased new in sept 05. The first week I owned the vehicle my engine light came on and the vehicle was very sluggish from takeoff, I then called the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and was told that all Nissan are sluggish and need to be driven to get the "newness from the vehicle" what kind of crap is that. About 6 months ago, I noticed that my brakes are squealing and my tires needed to be replaced, I don't even have 20k miles on my vehicle so this is very mysterious to me. Nissan in my opinion does not listen to its customers and claims to be the very best towards their customers on the commercials but in reality they are just another big company making money at the expense of "use to be loyal" customers". Every complaint on this board I can agree with which is sad for I to have experienced the seat belts, sharp bar under the passengers seat, engine and passenger seat air bag light so basically all we have is an expensive good looking non-working pieces of crap. So thank you very much Nissan. Signed - will never ever ever purchase another Nissan in my life.
I have been having numerous problems with my car moving very slowly, not staying in the road, pulling away from me. I have to drive my car with 2 hands to keep in the road. I have took it back to the dealer numerous times and they have told me many different problems that might be wrong with my car. When I finally decided to take it to another maintenance shop just to make sure I was being told the truth. After 30 min of having my vehicle I was told by a goodyear manager that I have 3x the wrong size tires on my vehicle. He told me that I should have 205/65/16 tires on my car and I have 225/60/16 tires on my vehicle. I am furious because I purchased this car from the dealership with those tires on my car and have taken my car in there several times to be maintenance and service and they knew that was the problem with the vehicle. My car is not a steady vehicle I feel unsafe in this car. I have to constantly hold it still in the road. When it rain I feel like I wreck at anytime. I have a small child and it hurts me to know that I have taken my car in there several times and not one time have they said anything about my tires. I have had those tires aligned and balance but the tech told me it would do me no good because the tires are 3 times to big. Please help I think they should replace my tires with the right size. Also my seat belts on the car will not extract I have taken this to the dealer several times and they will pull them out but when I leave after about 4 to 5 days my belts will get stuck again I also had my seat belts checked and was told it is a manufacturing problems and Nissan will not fix the problem. They told me flat out it is not there problem I can not pull a seat belt. I have to let my daughter ride in the back at times without a seat belt until I can find someone to fix the problem. The seat belts are getting hung from the core of the entrance but they will not fix the problem. *.
Consumer's daughter experienced numerous problems with vehicle. It intermittently stalled. Dealer had vehicle on 3 different diagnostic machines, and it just showed that #4 cylinder needed servicing. Consumer stated that this had been checked a number of times and still not repaired.
