3 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/17/2010

The car initially used a lot of oil and anti-freeze. Basically we needed to put a quart of oil and anti-freeze in the car every 100 - 200 miles. We had the head gasket replaced and this helped with the antifreeze and the oil but after a while it started to use a lot of oil again. It got to the point where it was going through a quart of oil every 100 miles or less. My son went out to run some errands and while driving smoke started coming from the engine and it just quit. Upon looking at the engine, he noticed that there was large puddle of oil under the car. Fortunately traffic was light and no one hit me.

7 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/30/2008

2002 Nissan Altima began overheating, losing coolant rapidly and gauges indicated rapid temperature fluctuations. Upon taking vehicle to dealer, visual diagnostic suggested a replacement of valve cover gasket. Gasket was replaced for approximately $300. Overheating resumed after repairs in addition to overheating, vehicle began producing white smoke as well as misfiring upon start-up. Computerized diagnostic was then completed. Diagnosis was a blown head gasket. Repair cost was quoted at $2100 plus taxes. I did research online and investigation revealed that the blown head gasket wasn't isolated to me alone and that there are many 2002 Nissan Altimas that blow the head gasket around 70,000 to 90,000 miles. Many customers appear to have tried to contact Nissan but company will not own up to apparent defect with the model. It is quite difficult to blow a vehicle's head gasket and it is unfair for a model to have such a major defect and the consumers have to assume responsibility and cost of repairing the problem - a major engine overhaul. To present, no injuries or crashes have resulted, however, dealer has warned that without repair, engine parts may continue to warp and may result in complete engine failure.

8 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/15/2007

I have a 2002 Altima 2. 5 standard. I bought the car in July 2007 with 72,000 miles and had a misfire reading from the time I bought it till I replaced the head gasket and got some head work done on the car. Mileage now totals at nearly around 110,000 miles. Nissan looked at my car all the way for any problems and I had a few recalls done on it including replacing the headlamps. Little did I know when I had my mechanic (non-Nissan mechanic later on from my dealer visit) replace the head gasket ( w/valve guides and oil rings) for $1600 that my front engine fan was unplugged near the headlamps which had caused some really bad overheating issues. My cat is bad (via a engine code) which I have yet to replace as I see no need to at this point. . . Also my car has been eating up more than 1 quart of oil per week as I drive over 460 miles a week as a commuter to dallas, TX. At this point the option would be to either re. . Re-build the engine or replace with a new very expensive engine nothing that I have already spent too much money on this car.

10 Engine Head Gasket Failure problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/05/2006

I have a 2002 Altima with 35,000 miles on it. I have had it to the dealership several times due to fact the check engine light was on and it was running rough. I was told that the #1 cylinder was showing up faulty on the computer reading for the check engine light. The dealer had my car for 3 days and found nothing wrong and replaced the plugs. The whole time they were in contact with the Nissan factory tech team. 2 months later the check engine light came on again and after another try to the dealer they instructed me that there was no coolant in the cooling system and filled it. 2 weeks later the check engine light came on and the coolant level dropped. Took to the dealer and Nissan tech said to replace the head gasket. Bolts were on back order and they took a month to come in. They replaced the head gasket and then discovered the engine needed to be replaced, which was on back order and they did not know when the engine would be available. I have now been without my car for 2 months, made 2 car payments on a car that I did not have, and am getting pretty annoyed. I contact Nissan north America, who was soooo very unprofessional and told me that they did not see the problem since I had a warranty and the money was not coming out of my pocket. Furthermore, they had more important issues to attend to since the 2006 Altima recall. These took precedence and they did not know when my engine would be available. I am so frustrated with the lack of caring from this company. I have yet to decided where to turn next. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. 8jb.
