During hill ascencion, going at around 15-25,30 mph, faint knocking noise coming from right side of engine, (or at power brake as well; car on stationary with d engaged and pushing brake pedal while gently accelarating ). Took to dealer to diagnose; diagnose: alternator replacement (done). Knocking noise still present. Taken to dealer for further assessment diagnose " normal noise"??? I'm not a mechanic but none of my other cars do this noise, this noise is done by cars in which the engine is dying out. Fyi car is 20 miles to be 60000 miles, which is when the powertrain warranty expires.

I bought this 2002 Nissan Altima ($4500 at randy marion dealership in hickory, nc) for my wife on January 20th, 2015. The car had 123,000 miles on it. Just 5 or 6 days later, the engine light came on engine started making a loud knocking sound when you crank it up after it had sat for a while. I checked the oil level and it needed a quart of oil, so I added a quart. The noise came back after 2 days. This immediately became a mandatory issue to check the oil level and add more oil every 2 to 3 days. It is now August 7th and I have to check and refill the oil every day! I started my research for complaints on this vehicle and found thousands of complaints on the same issue along with recalls for replacing the ecm, catalytic converter and/or engine. The ecm recall applied to this car, so I had that done on July 30th along with an oil change. On top of that, I just spent $1006. 62 to get the catalytic converter replaced yesterday along with a quart of oil. Got the knocking sound again this morning. I took it to the closest dealership this morning and they said it needs a new engine. My wife and I are so upset now. We feel like we were sold someone else's problem (certified lemon) from a dealership that should not have resold it in the first place. How much more complaints is going to be needed for someone to make Nissan fix this problem???.

I bought a car, sold "as is", because the dealership advertised the car saying "everything under the hood is in perfect working condition. " this was my first time buying a car and they took advantage of it. The car is missing 2 lug nuts on the front driver side, and back passenger side wheel(I don't know how the car passed inspection) it was sold to me with no transmission fluid, when I put some in it began to leak badly(I have pictures) the very next day after purchasing the car I noticed a knocking noise in the engine and everytime I started the car it began to shake for about 10 seconds. Everyday the cars engine would make new noises, by day four the car wouldn't start. Day five it started up but it was overheating within 5 minutes of being on(I didn't know how to read the hot/cold gauge yet being that this was my first car) I tried taking it back but the dealership will not take it back. I took it to a mechanic, they said the transmission is leaking severly, the head gasket is overheating and its warped 4. 0. . Its missing lug nuts, the brakes are bad, and has moisture in the oil. I stopped driving the car unless it was a emergency and while I was on the freeway oneday, the car began to shake violently and started to jump back n forth and I couldn't press the gas because it would not go. I could have been killed on the freeway. I just recently took it to another mechanic shop called arrow's transmission. They declared the entire engine a total fail and unsafe.

We have a 2003 Nissan Altima, we had problems with the catalyic converter, we changed it, in Aug 2011, we learned about the problem on-line. What we did not read about is how the converter goes bad and throws parts of it into the engine and has the engine burn oil and eventually throw a rod. We took the car into the dealership for an oil change in Nov 2011, traveled 500 miles and the engine goes out we told the service advisor there was a knocking noise in the engine, he said this could be due to low oil, if the noise continues after oil change we will diagnose the noise. Well, the noise stopped, after the engine gave out, the dealership is telling us that we are at fault cause we did not get the diagnosis done on the vehicle. I asked them is the test would determine that a rod was going to blow, he said no, then why pay for the test. I have been reading on line and see there are several people who have had the same problem with the vehicle, and Nissan corp will not do anything about this, people are talking about filing a class action law suit, but there is no record of anyone filing one. I recently talked to a friend, who's daughter has the same vehicle, they just went thru the same problem with the blown engine, we got estimates to replace the engine, $3500-$5500 for another engine and labor, this is crazy, I called several used or rebuilt engine places and this engine is hard to come by, guess lots of people are blowing the engines for the same reason, yet Nissan corp can not file a recall or help out with the costs, especially where they knew about the bad catalyic converter and blowing debris back into the engine. That is a shame, Nissan is known for good strong dependable vehicles, and for them not wanting to help the consumers is going to hurt them in the long run. I honestly can say I would never purchase another Nissan again.

After checking the oil dip stick, it was discovered that the engine oil was low. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Recently (07/10/10) my car just made a loud knocking noise blew a big smoke on the highway at 65mph--the fire men and police that showed up believe it threw a rod because it leaked oil everywhere, had the oil changed exactly 5 days prior.
My 2003 Nissan Altima started making a knocking sound on the engine and runs rough. I tried using fuel system cleaner but it did not work. I also tried oil treatments and changing the oil but non worked. I took to a Nissan certified mechanic and told me intake valve screws were loose and creating a knocking sound that the butterfly is half open causing the car to idle roughly. The mechanic also said the this happens alot with this cars, Altimas and sentra and that there is a recall for 2004 and 2005 models but not 2003 even if it has the same engine. He also informed me that if I don't get it fixed the it will break my engine and could cause an accident. On the same car I also had to pay for a crank sensor the failed on me. Nissan said the same thing, recall on the 2004 and 2005 but not 2003. It caused my car to stall and run roughly. Took it to Nissan and they said nothings wrong and take it back to them when the check engine light turns on. After a month it did turn on. Luckily have warranty but they still charge me. Please help, I'm not looking for someone to replace my car just to have Nissan fix what they messed up on.
The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Altima. While driving 45 mph the contact heard a knocking sound in the engine and moments later the engine light appeared on the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the crank shaft sensor needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 110,000.
Car uses excessive amounts of engine oil and low oil light never comes on to warn driver, can only determine that it is low by engine knocking noise. Average oil consumption about 1 - 2 quarts every 300 miles also heater does not work when car is idleling only works when driving. Check engine light constantly comes on code states cat converter bad. Continous problem has been going on since car had about out 90,000 miles. Car also turns off after running and will crank but does not start after multiple tries.
I brought my 2003 Nissan Altima into countyline Nissan in middlebury, CT; the dealership I purchased the car from. It was 5-02-08 and I had 58,294 miles on it, I told them I heard a knocking sound in the engine in second and third gear, I also told them it sounded as if the engine bogged down while I was driving up hills. I explained to them that my warranty was going be up at 60,000 miles and wanted them to fix the problem before the warranty was up. I also told them that while they had my car to do an oil change. When I went to pick up my car later that day they told me they were unable to duplicate my concern, meaning that they could not hear the noticeably obvious sound the engine had been making. I assured them that I definitely heard a noise and that my car was acting weird , they assured me there was nothing wrong, they gave me my oil change and sent me on my way. On 9-21-08 at approx. 61,174 the faint knocking I heard suddenly turned into a loud banging in my engine. I stopped my car and not knowing what else to do checked my oil. There was not a drop in it, after I had just had my oil changed not even three thousand miles earlier, I knew it had to be the dealerships fault. I brought my car to the dealership on 9-22-08 and told them of the problem, they said they would look at it and call me back. A few hours later I received a call from the manager, he told me I needed a new engine and it would costs $4,500. I told him I would not be paying that because it was there fault and they needed to do something to fix it. He said the only thing he could do was replace the engine for $4,500. I then had my car towed to my house, I looked into my options and needed a car ASAP so I had another shop replace the engine for a little cheaper. I called Nissan corp. And told them of the situation they said they couldn't help me. I have found numerous complaints of similar situations and I have also found a recall on the same engine in canada.
The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the check engine warning indicator would continuously illuminate. The dealer could not determine why the indicator continued to illuminate and stated that there was rust around the fuel tank. On a separate occasion, the engine began to make a knocking sound and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. It was determined that the knocking noise originated from the overhead cam component of the engine. There was no oil in the vehicle, although the contact maintained regular maintenance and oil changes every 3,000 miles. His VIN was not included in any of the recalls that described the same failures he experienced (NHTSA campaign id numbers 03v455000 and 03v455000). The failure mileage was 32,500 and current mileage was 86,600.
