36 Engine problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Altima. While entering onto the freeway at 10 mph, the vehicle completely shut off. The contact placed the vehicle into neutral and it immediately restarted. The failure occurred at least three times, in which the vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road because it would not restart. The weather was not a factor. The contact had just purchased the vehicle a few weeks prior to the failures beginning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they performed three recall repairs. However, the failures still persist. The failure mileage was 109,000.

37 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/14/2008

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5 s model, the car started to use excessive amounts of oil and coolant. Took car to a Nissan dealer and the service dept. Told me I need a new engine and without having the service dept. Disassemble the engine they can't determine what the failure of is. This car only has 98k on it and is and was taken very good care of. I've heard of others who own Nissan Altimas having the same symptoms and problems. The Nissan dealer told me there is nothing they or Nissan of America can or will do. I know that Nissan has had problems and they will not do anything to help.

The vehicle has been parked for 30 days and would not restart. The failure mileage was 98,000.

39 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/31/2008

My car has a recall for the engine. I took time off from work to go and get my car serviced. The same day of the service, my car "service engine soon" light came on and the car had poor performance. I called the dealership back to explain the situation, and the service person told me to bring it back in. I told them I needed a loaner car so I could go to work. They insisted that they do not issue loaners anymore, so I proceeded to obtain another way. I called the dealership, on several occasions to let them know it was a problem getting my car in without the courtesy of a loaner. In June 2008, I tried to obtain my license but the car failed the emission test. I contacted the Nissan headquarters with my complaint making several calls and leaving messages. A regional manager assistant contacted me to let me know the manager will call me within 3 days. She did not contact me like she promised, so I kept calling until finally I requested someone call me ASAP. I received a call on Thursday, 7/31/08 from the regional specialist stating that the problem I am having has nothing to do with the emission test failure and added there was nothing they could do. She referred me to the dealership and stated she has nothing to do with their decision. I called the dealership and the serviceman stated that he had spoken to the regional specialist and when I bring the car in I would have to pay for diagnostic costs and repair services, because it is probably not their problem. As of now, the problem of my car not being repaired and unsafe has not been resolved, which was stated could result in a fatal accident.

42 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/14/2008

My 2002 Nissan Altima (2. 5l) started out with O2 sensors needing replaced, the overheating, no coolant, loosing oil, replaced crank sensor, had all recalls done electronic control module (ecm). Now I am left with having to replace my engine. This seems like a problem out of most 2002 Nissan Altima with 2. 5 according to the internet searches I have completed. I feel Nissan needed to recall the whole engine.

43 Engine problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/03/2008

My car quit first time in a parking lot when my 93 yr. Old grandmother was with me after that it has quit on me twice in the middle of busy traffic. The car just quits which could cause a major accident. This car needs to be recalled permanently to get them off the road. The manufacturer and dealers will not fix repair without charging. This is a continuous default in the manufacturing of this car. Replacing sensor will only work for a little while and then it goes bad. It is a major default in manufacturing of the 2003 Nissan Altima.

44 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/02/2008

My car wouldn't start. I notified Nissan, they towed my car in. My car had several recalls. Nissan checked my car and reset my ecm. When I went to get my car from mitchell Nissan which is 30 miles away. They told us that I had a possible head or coil failure. When we left the dealership we didn't check the oil cause when they reprogrammed they suppose to have checked everything. When my husband checked that's when we found out it was no oil. I drove my car 30 miles with no oil. My car is a 2002 Altima I checked the recalls and saw that the 2. 5 2006 Altimas has a recall on the engine as well as the sensor like the earlier years. The recalls states something about the ecm and about the pistons and driving without oil. Now I have to get my engine replaced and Nissan is saying it is not on them. My car was not acting up nor smoking until it cut off and had to be reprogrammed. I feel this messed up my engine.

46 Engine problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

On 10/22/06 I purchased a 2006 Nissan Altima in va. It has a remanufactored engine and only had 35 miles. I had the oil changed at 3,400 miles and moved back to GA. I received a recall notice pb023 qr25 alt-ser my06 ntb06-082 in may 2007. I took it to the nearest Nissan dealership and everything checked out and they changed the oil (odo 7,473). I had the oil changed on 9/1/2007 (odo 11,885). On 10/20/07, driving on an interstate suddenly there was smoke coming from everywhere and the engine died. Thought it was going to go up in flames. It smell as if the engine was burning. (odo 13,791). It was towed to the nearest Nissan dealership. They said the it threw a rod and there is a hole the size of a fist in the engine. The engine will be replaced. This will be the second engine in this veh. I would like a new vehicle replacement or be refunded in full. I have no confidence in the vehicle and fear it will catch fire. I am scared to drive it! I was assured when purchased that the engine problems have been resolved and were no longer an issue and the dealership would stand behind the engine 100%.

There is no set speed this happens, the car just drops power and cuts off. I travel 110 miles a day round trip and it happens at least three times a day. In researching the internet there appears to be many owners experiencing the same problem.

51 Engine problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/09/2007

On three separate occasions, my vehicle has cut off on me. I have taken the car to the dealership two of the three times. The first time, it cut off as I prepared to accelerate after stopping at a traffic light. The dealership could not get a problem reading from the computer. The second time, I was slowing down to go around a curve in the highway and the car did not respond when I attempted to accelerate. It sputtered and cut off. Fortunately, there were no other cars behind me, as it was only a two lane highway and it was late at night. I was able to pull over to the shoulder and restart the car. The information about the recall came out shortly after, however morris Nissan refused to repair my car without me paying for the repair, as they stated that they had not gotten authorization from Nissan yet on the recall and could not do it free of charge. The third time was just today as, once again, I was accelerating from a stop.

54 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/19/2007

My 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5s appears to have pieces of the catalytic converter in the engine cylinder, causing an engine misfire. When doing research on the internet I find hundreds of owners of this same model vehicle with the same problem and in most cases they are being denied any help from Nissan due to the vehicle being out of warranty. It is obvious that there is a definite pattern of premature problems/failures with this model that Nissan refuses to address. It is time that nhsta uses their influence to get this company to stand behind these defective vehicles!.

61 Engine problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/18/2006

I was recently contacted via phone that my Nissan Altima may be part of a national recall from Nissan motors USA. [how come I did not receive any mail notification?] I brought my car in November/ 2006. Thus, I called and brought my car to the nearest Nissan dealer [wondries Nissan]. The service manager assured me that the service department would run a series of test and it shouldn't take longer than a day to finish. As a result I brought my car in on a Monday morning, and guess what? it's still there. It's been three days. End of the first day, he told me it's a huge recall and a lot of test needs to be run. [he couldn't told me that during the time I brought it in so Nissan can give me rental car for my trouble. ] since the timing was bad, I couldn't get a rental car. At the end of the second day, the service manager said the testing was done successfully, but when they tried to reprogram the ecm it is not working. [again, it's toward the end of the day, I could not make it in time to get a rental car] now, it's the 3rd day, and they said they will call me back to give me an update as soon as they find out what is the status of my vehicle. Who knows what they will tell me next. I am concern for myself and other consumers who had brought their car in for the recall engine inspection. I am pretty sure they promise every 2006 Nissan owner that it would take a day to accomplish the test, but it's been 3 long inconvenient days for me as a Nissan owner. Wondries Nissan is not too attentive to my concerns and my daily work schedule. I hope someone from NHTSA can look into this matter and check why it would take them more than 2 days to perform tests on their [claimed] national recall. I appreciate the work NHTSA is doing for automobile owners nationwide. Sincerely, leslie yang.

- the contact called Nissan motors to inform them that passer by said car was on fire. He then heard a loud explosion and noticed smoke behind him. Nissan said that the vehicle is safe and had a recall on the engine. When he asked to have the engine replaced, the dealer declined to do so. The dealer advised contact to change and check oil every 700 miles. The dealer offered the contact an extended 100,000 mile warranty. The contact bought a new car to avoid having to perform maintenance on a vehicle so often. Nissan maintains that the vehicle was safe. Brunton motors Nissan diagnosed the vehicle and informed him the oil was fine. A short time later he received a recall letter. The contact asked if the dealer can force him to retrieve the vehicle, which is presently at the dealership. The contact received a call late 12/18/06 that the vehicle has been repaired and waiting pick-up. Per the recall if the oil gets low in the vehicle it can catch on fire.

65 Engine problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/17/2006

Dear NHTSA, recently I have been having problems with my 2003 Nissan Altima, more specificity, the engine has stopped running without warning while driving at a low speed. I researched this issue and found a recall on the Nissan website for the crank angle sensor on all 2002 Altimas, but nothing for 2003 Altimas. However, while researching on the web I found several reports, including the NHTSA website (campaign # 06v-242), indicating that a few 200,000 2003 Altimas/sentras (2. 5 liter) were being recalled for the same crank angle problem. I brought this issue up with the Nissan service department (cerritos) and was thoroughly disappointed with the support and service from the technicians. First, I was informed that my car was not under the recall. Then, I was informed that not all recalls are listed in the website and I would have to get my car serviced first and only after could they determine whether or not my car is under the warranty. And I would need to pay for whatever repairs that was needed to be done. I do not have an issue with paying for the repairs if it is not a recall issue; however, shouldn't the Nissan's technicians know exactly what is under recall by looking into the VIN number or the parts number? also, the recall is not listed or announced on the Nissan website but is reported in several articles. It should have been Nissan's responsibility to inform the public of this safety issue, even if it is only a small number of vehicles. And the dealerships responsibility to check into the problem, especially since there have been other instances with this particular car. I have yet to receive any correction for this issue and am hoping you will be of some assistance to me with this problem since I have had no luck with the dealership. Cindy lin.

66 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

I own a 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5s. I have seen that they have issued recalls for newer models based on the engine consuming excessive amounts of oil. I have noticed the same thing happening on my car for the past few years. I have mentioned it to the dealer on a couple of occasions and have been sort of blown off and told I am not changing the oil often enough. I recently was in the dealership for a recall for the undercarriage and while there had a 90000 mile service done. After that service, the engine was going through oil roughly every 500 miles or so. It used to go through it every 4000 miles or so, which seems incredibly quick. I think the problem is not just on the newer models but on older models as well. From what I have read, this could be a fire hazard and would like the matter looked into further.

67 Engine problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/20/2006

I had heard from others that Nissan had issued a recall on my vehicle. I called the dealer, gave them my VIN, and it was confirmed. I was told to check the oil, add oil if needed, and that my power train warranty had been extended to 100,000 miles. I was also told that Nissan would contact me and let me know what they planned to do to fix the problem. Today I called to the dealer again to get "100,000" mile warranty extension information sent to me in writing. I was then told it would have to come from the manufacturer. I then called the number I was given and was forwarded around and left on hold. I saw online that customers had been notified of a recall over a month ago. I've never received any notification from Nissan. This has been a horrible experience and I would like to know what options I have??.

68 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/15/2006

Nissan Altima 2. 5 2002 in 2006 my car was using 2 or 3 quarts of oil every three thousand miles. Luckily my car was still under warranty, but Nissan and the Nissan dealership were very reluctant to provide help. Finally after months of testing, ten trips to the dealership, calls to corporate, and a trip to the dealership with my father, they finally replaced my engine. They would not, however, tell me exactly what the problem was and why the engine had to be replaced. Now, two years later, I am facing the exact same problems. The dealership says I need a new catalytic converter and new O2 sensor. Another one thousand dollars! after researching this car and others who are facing the same problems I am convinced Nissan should take responsibility and a recall should be mandatory. Thank you for your help.

69 Engine problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima
