Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) Problems of Nissan Altima

Nissan Altima owners have reported 32 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Altima based on all problems reported for the Altima.

1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/21/2022

Ice deposits forming in the engine egr valve preventing the egr valve from properly functioning. This results in a "limp home mode" where the engine power output is severely reduced. Ice deposits physically verified by dealer. This condition routinely happens when parked outdoors in temps below 0f. When effected the car cannot reach highway speeds. Problem resolved by completely warming up the engine followed by an engine restart to clear the ecm error.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2019 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/18/2022

Moonroof shattered (exploded) for unknown reason. Temperature outside was roughly 79 degrees fahrenheit. No object struct glass.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

As I was starting to slow down in preparation of taking a turn off the frontage road my car completely shut off, my brakes and steering locked and luckily I was able to complete my turn into a gas station where I immediately put it in park and restarted via push start. , 2 days later this occurred again on a fairly busy street where I repeated the steps to start it again. I am extremely scared to have this happen again on a heavily traveled street causing me to be involved in a collision , I have researched online and see other reports/complaints of the same issue I described yet do not see any recall issued regrading this extremely dangerous defect.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2015 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/16/2018

When temperatures are 15 degrees, or lower the engine makes a loud rumbling and knocking noise when started up. The colder it is the louder and longer it last. Generally it takes 5-10+ minutes before it quiets down. Second issue is; regardless of temperature, when accelerating on a grade it also makes a rumbling noise. The car has 57,000 on it and is very good condition otherwise.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/29/2017

Transmission overheats whenever the vehicle is driven for an extended period (1 hour+) in warm weather (80 degrees+). Vehicle immediately loses power, with rpms never reaching above 2000, drastically reducing acceleration and speed. Driving on a highway, this creates a serious danger. This has been happening for over two years now.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2008 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/14/2016

After replacing my transmission, the car continued to sputter anytime I was driving for more than a few miles. My mechanic figured out that the catalytic converter was overheating to about 600 degrees when it should have been no more than 250 degrees, causing parts of the engine to begin melting. The check engine light never came on to alert me of this issue, and I may now have permanent engine damage.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

On July 11th I went to the store to pick up some items. When I left the store to get in my car, it would not start. I drive a two door Nissan Altima coupe 2009. The steering lock had malfunctioned leaving me stranded in a parking lot while it was 95 degrees outside. I had a lock smith come and use his computer on my vehicle, unfortunately my car is in hijack mode and my engine will not allow his computer to talk to it. Only Nissan has a computer that can bypass this and replace my steering lock. With that, Nissan knows the 2009 model has a defective steering lock but has yet to recall it. There are thousands of people with this model and year who have had this same issue. Nissan also went as far as replacing the part but with a different part # as they know the part # in the 2009's are defective. The part # they are now replacing it with is the part they put in the 2013 Nissan Altima's. Nissan says it's going to cost me over $1200 to get this fixed in my car. I refuse to pay for a problem that is defective in my vehicle and is known by the company itself. I am now carless as I don't have that kind of money to fix this problem. I am appalled that Nissan would knowingly not recall the part in the 2009 Nissan Altima's. It poses a risk to people's safety as it can happen anytime and anywhere!.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/15/2015

The contact owns a 2012 Nissan Altima. When driving in weather above 84 degrees, the cruise control failed while driving approximately 70 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the cvt transmission overheated and the vehicle needed a valve body and oil cooler to correct the defect. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 92,000. The VIN was not provided.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/25/2014

- faulty intake valve timing control solenoid valve - intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness is open or shorted - intake valve timing control solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection - faulty camshaft position sensor - camshaft position sensor harness is open or shorted - camshaft position sensor circuit poor electrical connection - faulty crankshaft position sensor (pos) since the intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or close. Before replacing the valve, change engine oil and filter and reset engine code. When there is a gap between angle of target and phase-control angle degree, the valve will stop working and the ecm will trigger the p0021 code. Possible symptoms - engine light on (or service engine soon warning light)- lack/loss of power- engine rough idle p0021 Nissan description this mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The ecm receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ecm sends on/off pulse duty signals to the intake valve timing control solenoid valve depending on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake valve to increase engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in high-speed range. The intake valve timing control solenoid valve changes the oil amount and direction of flow through intake valve timing control unit or stops oil flow. The longer pulse width advances valve angle. The shorter pulse width retards valve angle. When on and off pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve stops oil pressure flow to fix the intake valve angle at the control position.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

My 2013 Nissan Altima is the worst car I have ever owned. Since I have purchased it, there has been a constant engine noise until I reach about 40 mph. Just in the past 3 months, within weeks of each other both front inside door handles have broke (my kids and I have to roll down both windows just to get out of the car which would be a huge safety issue in the event of a fire, crash or being trapped in the car at all), the dome lights through the inside of the car have stopped working (which is a safety issue because there is no way to see inside my vehicle at night), the light in the driver's side door panel fell out, the ac has gone out (and the compressor part is $425!!!! are you serious?!?!?! I have a 10. 5 month old and it is 100 degrees outside!!! another huge safety issue) and now there is another noise coming from the engine at all speeds, a grinding noise. I am a single mom of three kids who I support on my own. I cannot afford to fix these things. I bought this car because it was supposed to be "reliable". And it is not! there have been so many complaints regarding all of the same things that I am experiencing and a recall needs to be done on all of them. This car is barely 4 years old and these problems should not be happening!!!! do something Nissan! you are losing customers and reputation is on the line!.

11 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2013 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/28/2013

I was driving a brand-new, Nissan Altima rental car on a business trip. After I returned to my hotel one afternoon, I forgot to turn the engine off. This vehicle has a key fob and a "start/stop" button only. There is no metal key. After I exited the vehicle, I noticed that the horn did not honk when I locked the vehicle with the key fob. The trunk release did not automatically open when I used the key fob. I manually pressed a button under the trunk lid to retrieve my bag. The next morning, I noticed steam and water coming out of the exhaust tailpipes. (it was app. 34 degrees that morning. ) I discovered that the engine was still running, and the car used app. 3/8s of a tank of gasoline overnight. My concern is that a car like this could be driven into a garage with the engine left on, and then the occupants of the residence could get carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust fumes. This vehicle needs some time of warning bell, chime, etc. To remind the driver that the engine is still running if they open the driver's side door and/or exit the vehicle. Thank-you.

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

This recall number, #03v084 describes my situation precisely. My vehicle currently has 97,000 miles on the odometer and I have been experiencing (over the last course of a year) severe oil consumption. Soon after I changed my oil in may of 2013, I began to notice unusual engine noise. I took my vehicle to a mechanic and he discovered that my motor was only running on a quart and a half of oil. The mechanic replenished my oil to its normal level and since then, the motor consumes oil at an abnormally rapid rate. According to the nhtsaâ??s recall #03v084, the catalytic converter disintegrates and the particles of the converter are drawn back into the motor, which causes scaring on the cylinder walls. This problem is the only logical explanation for my vehicle's rapid oil consumption. Itâ??s my intention to approach Nissan of north America about this issue. I would greatly appreciate your support.

14 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2008 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

As I got off the interstate (driving 60 mph) then reduced my speed to 20 when I tried to accelerate it wouldn't go!! it would not accelerate and my rpm would climb up to 4 or 5! I had to drive all the way back home on interstate driving 20 mpg!!! it's happened only when I travel long distances!! I am highly dissatisfied with the Altima! everyone I encountered about the 2006-2008 Altima regrets getting one.

15 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Simple engine heat appears to disintegrate the pre-catalytic converter part on a 2002 Nissan Altima 2. 5l engine. The engine sucks in the broken parts, which then damage the engine, requiring that the engine be replaced.

16 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

My 2005 Altima was recalled because the crankshaft position sensor (cps) gets hot, fails to send signals to the engine control module (ecm) fast enough, so the ecm shuts down the engine, increasing the danger of being involved in a traffic accident (NHTSA campaign id number: 07v527000 ). In June, my car stalled on the highway. I towed it home and discovered via a code reader that the cps failed, and by google & the NHTSA web site that this was part of the recall id'd above. The remedy is to reprogram the ecm. I made an appointment with the dealer who originally sold this car when new, and dropped off the car. The next day the Nissan dealer left me a self-serving and deceptive message (that I can send you in audio format or transcribed to text) insinuating that along with the free remedy (reprogramming the ecm), the cps had been replaced for $257. I stopped by the dealer to discuss this, and to my relief (since the recall remedy didn't require this $257 repair) the cps had not been replaced. However I experienced the same failure the next hot day. Nissan's ecm reprogramming remedy had no effect - the engine stalled and the code reader again said cps failure. I opened a file with Nissan USA consumer affairs, who assigned a rep. The rep. First spoke with the dealer, then called me and refused to pay to replace the cps (a $37 part). Why doesn't this recall include replacing the cps (Nissan's recommended fix, when the ecm reprogramming fails)? this partial recall is problematic because it's: #1 almost free for Nissan (no parts, minutes of labor) #2 in my case ineffective, causing no cessation of accident risk (a common problem, I'd bet) #3 limited to only one of the 2 failing parts in a closely integrated failure pattern #4 an effective "loss leader" - bringing customers to their garage, allowing Nissan to make money (e. G. Replacing the $37 csp for $257) #5 hard to verify (no visible new or old parts to prove they did the ecm reprogramming).

17 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/08/2009

Service engine light coming on. Car constantly jerks when idling and sometimes cuts out. Spent $55 on a system diagnostic test. Intake valve gasket failure. Causing idle to fluctuate, intermittent stalling 2000 Altima with 37500 miles, this is a manufacturing defect due to the egr pipe running to close to cylinder 4 area of the manifold. This is happening to all Altimas 1998-2001. Nissan should repair as recall, this could cause accidents due to stalling. This should be investigated. Repairs are est. At $850. 00. According to the Nissan advisor the lifetime of the gasket should exceed 100000 miles. Nissan has a program to correct any unusual defects after the warranty is expired but they refuse to honor their agreement.

18 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/25/2008

Okay I don't know what the deal with Nissan and their recalls, but they definitely need to make a recall on the 2000 Altima intake manifold gasket. My car started idling at varying rpms under 1 grand and started vibrating in a strange way. When I give my Altima some gas to take off, it comes to the verge of stalling. I did some research on the problem and read a few hundred separate cases where this exact same problem occurred. This is obviously a manufacturing error where Nissan has placed the egr pipe too close to the intake manifold gasket, causing it to heat up and eventually leak. Numerous consumers are paying nearly $1000 to correct this mistake that Nissan engineers have created on countless cars. This is a serious engineering problem on Nissan's part and needs to be addressed and corrected.

19 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/09/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Altima. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle completely shut down and lost all power steering. The contact had the vehicle repaired on February 6, 2008 for NHTSA campaign id number 07v527000 (engine and engine cooling). Approximately three days after the recall repair was performed, she noticed the same symptoms with the engine, but of a milder degree. The vehicle appeared as if it would stall after the repair was made, but did not. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle is currently at the dealer. The purchase date and powertrain were unknown. The current mileage was 78,000 and failure mileage was 77,900.

20 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/04/2008

The intake manifold gasket around cylinder #4 failed 2-3 years ago (~65,000 miles), causing rough idle/stalling as well as poor gas mileage and triggering fault code p0304. The dealer replaced the gasket for ~$650. Within the past couple of weeks (~85,000 miles), the symptoms have returned, accompanied by the same fault code. Spraying carb cleaner around the gasket area cause a smoothing out of the idle when applied near cylinder #4, indicating a recurring failure of the gasket. Searching the internet indicates that this is a very common issue particular to this engine model, leading to recurring expense to owners due to poor engineering. The most likely cause of this failure seems to be the routing of the egr gas lines too close to the intake manifold, causing premature degradation of the seal. A likely, and cost effective fix would seem to be the addition of a heat shield in the affected area between the egr gas lines and the manifold. The high incidence rate of this failure and the cause of poor engineering, would seem to indicate a recall issue to fix the poor fuel economy and excessive emissions it causes.

21 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/21/2008

We own a 2002 Nissan Altima (purchased at autoway Nissan, clearwater, FL in 2002) and have experienced the same mechanical failure as many who have posted to this and many other sites. With 100,300 miles on the vehicle we have just learned the catalytic converter has disintegrated and metal parts are now throughout the engine. As a result we are required to have a new engine installed or walk away from a 5 year old car that, other than this defect, is in excellent condition. Upon speaking to autoway Nissan we were informed since the car has exceeded the 8 years or 80,000 mile warranty on the catalytic converter Nissan would not cover the cost of repairs. Upon typing in 'Nissan catalytic converter' in google key word search my husband and I found it is enlightening and concerning to read many accounts of the same mechanical failure. I'm sure there are many, many more accounts of the same mechanical failure that we've yet to uncover. What can we do as consumers to have our rights protected? it is apparent Nissan has a defective part on at least 2002 / 2003 Altima. Any advise us on how to we as consumers can get Nissan to take ownership of a failed device.

22 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

Recent recall for 2002 Nissan Altima dated 11/07/2007. I recently called Nissan north America regarding a recall I saw while surfing the web. I called Nissan twice, Nov. 7, 2007 & Jan. 10. 2008, and they gave me a file# and faxed me a letter stating "these repairs are free of charge to you". Yet when I tried to have it fixed at the Nissan dealership they said I had to pay for a diagnostic or they would not fix it even under the recall. I have spent thousands of dollars already, regarding this problem with my 2002 Nissan Altima since 2007, I am disabled and on a fixed income, this car problem has put me in critical financial trouble. When I notified Nissan north America, inc. Of my problem trying to get it fixed they told me to try again, because they have no control over how much the dealerships charge. If I still had the problem getting it fixed they would deal with my problem then. Does integrity mean anything to anyone anymore? this car is a death trap. This car has shut off during operation on the freeway at a speed of 70 mph. It is not true when its said it only stalls at low speed. I and my granddaughter are a witness to that. Does anyone care about a human life?.

23 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

Catastrophic engine failure for Nissan Altima related to power valve/butterfly valve intake manifold design. Third generation Altima's qr25de 4-cylinder and vq35de 6-cylinder engines have unfortunately been affected by a recall related to the intake manifold and the power valves, also known as the butterfly valve. The technical service bulletin p5202 - does not mention all affected vehicles for production years w same design. This has left some owners affected by the problem with no recourse/remedy for what in some cases has amounted to catastrophic engine failure. The power valve is a series of four plates in the qr25de 4-cylinder and 6 plates in the vq35de 6-cylinder engines, one per cylinder. The plates open and close simultaneously to allow more air into the combustion chamber for increased power. Each plate is held in place by two screws. The screws have been known to come loose as well as the plates and are then ingested into the engine via the intake ports. Problem is initially exhibited by ses(service engine soon) light coming on and/or blinking. Upon obd meter reading, code will be p0304, or similar which is random cylinder misfire or cylinder 4 misfire. Electrode on spark plug has been bent closed as a result of the power valve retaining screw vibrating loose and being ingested into the engine. The screw then bounces around in the combustion chamber, hitting the spark plug and bending the electrode shut, preventing spark in that cylinder. Additionally, the screw(s) and part of the broken plates, in some cases have made their way through the engine and into the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter, thus causing the catalytic converter to prematurely disintegrate as well as become ingested into the engine. For some reason, Nissan north America has decided to not remedy all vehicles affected by this admitted flaw obviously, this could cause engine failure at the wrong place and the wrong time, resulting in serious bodily harm and/or fatality.

24 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/11/2007

A long time ago I started hearing some rattling sort of noise in the front. Took it to carmax, as I have the extended warranty. They said it was a loose belt and charged me $80 since belts aren't covered by warranty. The problem didn't really go away and only got worse. Around 89,000 miles it began to shake when idling and the noise was worse. The check engine light would come on intermittently. My husband found the info on this site, I printed it out and took it to carmax and told them to fix my manifold intake gasket! they wouldn't refund my $80 from the first visit, nor would the pay me $80 for diagnosing it myself. Ha. Oh well. They did $600 worth of repairs, which was mostly covered by my extended warranty (which expires at 92,500 miles). They discovered that the problem had also caused premature wear of my spark plugs, however, and the warranty would not cover that. Based on my online research, it is my understanding that this is due to heat around the cylinder 4 area from the egr pipe which bakes the gasket into leaking and that even though I got it fixed this time, it will likely have to be replaced again in the future. See #10167168 #10145161 #10100639 #10163901 also, see carcomplaints. Com where you will find 36 complaints on this issue.

25 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/01/2007

Butterfly valve screws in the intake/gas recirculation system work loose and make their way into the engine, causing damage. This was recalled on the 2004 and 2005 models, but the same problem exists on the 2002 and 2003 model qr25de 4 cylinder engines. The fix was to replace the screws, but engine damage occurred, which compromised the reliability of the vehicle.

26 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

Following the format requested above: 1: events leading up to the failure: simply bought the car and drove it. . . Seems that all 02 4 cylinder Altima owners are experiencing issue b/c of design flaw! 2. Failure: the pre-catalyst completely disintegrates into the engine and causes the engine to fail! consequence: need a new engine. 3. What was done to correct the failure: nothing but hide! they mask the problem to get past all warranties. Nissan USA is absolutely hiding from their responsibility to provide a safe vehicle! they started by hiding the pre -catalyst internal disintegration notification within a recall for a potential exhaust pipe hanger pin problem. They knew the pre-catalyst was disintegrating into engines causing damage, but didn't release that clearly to avoid needing to get past warranties and replace engines. My car was running rough and the dealer then replaced the precat (49k miles) and the car was never quite the same, but it did run so I thought all was fine. Obviously the first one had disintegrated into the engine and the Nissan didn't warn me of what was to come! I have taken very good care of this car and now have 98k on it. . But the end is very close. I had ses reports of p0420 and then later a report for a 4th valve issue. . . Now the car drinks oil at 1 - 2 quarts a week or it is completely out of oil! there is no smoke, smell, or drips. The oil is just gone! the dealer says I need a new engine and said there is nothing they can do. They directed me to Nissan consumer affairs- they have been very slow to respond. I am hopeful that they will replace my engine so that I don't have to worry about my engine seizing while I am driving on the highway or turning across in front of oncoming traffic! they have had my car for 10 days and I am waiting on consumer affairs to return my calls.

27 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2000 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/02/2006

In may of 2006 I was driving my 2000 Nissan Altima and the sel light came on, I got out of the car and checked the gas cap and it was tight. I called Nissan and mentioned this and they told me to check the cap again. After a week I had a diagnostic test done that revealed the egr sensor was bad. I took the vehicle and had the egr cleaned and the light went off for less than 24 hours. This light has been on constantly for about 2 months now and I think that Nissan should replace this at no charge. I called Nissan in nashville TN and the tech told me that they have been replacing a lot of egr sensors over the last couple of months.

28 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/13/2005

On 01/13/05, the engine of my '03 Nissan Altima se stalled. Thankfully, I was driving slowly on a residential street and was able to safely coast to the side of the road. I turned over the engine and it did not start. I waited a few moments and then tried again. The vehicle started but stalled again after I drove approx. 100 feet. The outside temperature was approx. 9 degrees fahrenheit but my vehicle's engine temperature gauge indicated the engine was warmed up. I waited in the car for approx. An hour in 9 degree temperature with my seven-year-old daughter until I was picked up by a family member. I had the vehicle towed to the Nissan dealership where I purchased the vehicle. They were unable to determine the cause of the engine stalling. While my vehicle was in their possession, I had them conduct a 15,000k service (oil change, tire rotation, etc. ). On 01/23/05, I heard an "engine knock" and discovered oil spots on my driveway from the car. I brought my car into the same dealership first thing the following morning. They inspected the vehicle and are telling me I need an entirely new engine. They are also claiming that it is not a manufacturers defect and therefore the engine replacement will not be covered under my warranty. At this point in the process, I believe the engine stalling was a safety procedure that indicated an engine problem. Furthermore, I believe the failure of the dealership to identify, and repair, the problem may be the cause of the engine damage they are reporting.

29 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

I rented vehicle for the weekend and used it for 1 day. I drove it down state to champaign 250 miles and made a stop. When I got back in the car and started it up, it hesitated to change gears but did, so I turned and drove the car home to chicago. The weather temperature was very fridget outside . When I got to chicago the vehicle stopped I could start it up but it would go into gear. The engine sounded very fine there was nothing else noticeable, no loud noises in the car. I called enterprise aaa towed the car to the enterprise rental place. I rented a smoke color vehicle. My insurance company said that he is charging me $5,000. 00 for a brand new transmission for a 2005 Nissan and for a serpentine belt and a oil change . The vehicle has already been repaired. I have not been given any information on anything or its whereabouts.

30 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/28/2004

The 2002 Altima started to stall. I took the car to the dealership. I was advised that the car had 3 recalls on it and I should have been notified a year in a half before. I took the car back 3 times and on the third time I was adivsed that the car would need a new motor. That was on Mar 15,2004. I called April 24,2004 at 3 pm and was advised by the manager handling the car that Nissan approved then disapprove the replacement order then reapproved it again. He adivsed me he would call me with further. This has gone on for the passed 6 weeks and the car is no longer working but I'm paying for it.

31 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/22/2002

2002 Nissan Altima. 1)rear pads + rotors worn at 35,000 miles: replaced at owners cost. Now 83000 miles(may '08): dealer has told rotors and pad need replacement and possibly calipers need to be evaluated. At 75000 mile check everything was ok. (per the service record). In Jan'08 I had specifically asked the breaks to be inspected. Told ok. Now suddenly the rotors are shot. Other than a squeal sound for 2 days no other symptoms. Concerned about how brakes go from fine to shot in 3 months. I think it is a big safety concern if the time it takes breaks to disintegrate is less than a 3 month period. 2) engine not starting after parked in the cold. Happened twice once at 48000 miles. (lower bill. ) 2nd time at 78000 miles. (huge bill ~$1000). Multiple parts replaced and serviced. Highlighted as problem on various forums with this particular Nissan model. Evaluate possibility related to ecm timings etc.
