38 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/04/2012

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima equipped with a 2. 5 liter engine. The service engine soon light came on around 4 February 2012. I took the vehicle to a local mechanic who advised the obd-ii code indicated a problem with the crank position sensor and that Nissan has had multiple recalls on some 2003 and 2004 Altimas with a 2. 5 liter engine for this problem. The mechanic advised me to take the vehicle to my local Nissan dealer to have them fix the issue due to the recall notices. On 6 February 2012 I went to my local Nissan dealer. The dealer advised me the vehicle identification number did not fall under any of the recall notices and therefore would not be able to perform any recall work. They did advise I could schedule an appointment and they would be happy to service the vehicle at their listed rates. I declined. On 6 February 2012 I took the vehicle back to my local mechanic and he performed the necessary work. The mechanic advised me he called Nissan to discuss the issue of replacing the crank position sensor and the dealer advised him it was a known problem with 2003 Altimas with the 2. 5 liter engine and both the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor should be replaced. The mechanic followed the dealers advice and replaced both sensors. . Read more...

39 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/15/2011

About a year ago my car began to use massive amounts of oil and also smoke when started. The mechanic could not find a reason for my car to go through so much oil. Ex. Had to put 4 quarts in one day into my car. About 3 months after that started, them temperature gage started running hot, but never showed signs of overheating. About two weeks ago my car started driving really rough and the service engine soon light began to blink at me. When taken to the mechanic is was found that I had a partially blown head gasket. Mechanic said he had seen 4 other cars, same year and model as mine that had the same exact problem on the same exact gasket. I started doing research and found that there were a lot of people with this problem and that soon after they replaced to head gasket, their engine blew. . I've had the car for 4 years and I'm still paying it. I really need some help with this issue.

40 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

Under NHTSA id number 07v527000. On 07/20/11 I had a service engine soon light come on. Car was not operating properly, so we took it to ken ganley Nissan for service. This is the same problem that appeared on NHTSA id 07v52700 for the 2. 5 engine crankshaft position sensor. The dealer stated this vehicle was no on the recall list. Since this is the same failure that was to be recalled, why was I charged $315. 22 for repairs? it appears to me that Nissan did not take care of all the recalled vehicles, but picked and chose only certain ones to reduce their expenses. It distorts the purpose of a recall process. Updated 10/20/11.

41 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/07/2011

First of all I noticed on 06/07/11 that my 2004 Nissan Altima3. 5 se passenger floor board has a big rust spot which is about 11 inches by 7 inches, but the rest of the floor board is in pristine condition. Huh. Also the timing tension chain tensioner went bad on 05/01/12, with 86000 miles and had to be repaired which was a very expensive to repair, and saw that this is a common problem on the Altima 3. 5 l engine. Hmmmm. And then, the car kept on stalling out going down the road, was told it was the cam shaft sensors, and had to have them replaced, now my service engine light will not go off, but engine is running good now. I bought a new 2012 Altima 3. 5 sl back in December 2011, kept the 04 Altima, most of these problems happened five months after buying the 2012 don't think.

42 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/03/2011

I got a service engine light on and took it to a mechanic, he said it was my engine, and catalytic converter(burning oil and debris going into the engine) and I needed to rebuild it. He rebuilt it and after about 7,000 the same problem happened burning oil consumption. Not sure what to do because he said that Nissan should have a fix for this and he isn't fixing the problem either. It's sitting in my driveway without a fix.

45 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/14/2010

While driving on interstate 580 in emeryville California in evening rush hour traffic my car began to jerk rapidly and then stopped while in traffic, the service engine light came on, after 5 attempts the car started. This happened numerous times while traveling to work on highway 50 and also while driving on surface streets. This makes me nervous and fearful when driving this vehicle and finally after the stopping multiple times on the interstate and at red lights, I took the car in for a diagnostic test and was advised my crankshaft sensor needed to be replaced and there was a recall per Nissan America for this known issue. I took the car in and was advised my VIN# was part of the recall but the damaged crankshaft sensor would not be replaced, only a reset of the ecm. I was advised that the ecm would not be reset due to the service engine light is on due to the faulty crankshaft sensor. I was also charged for a diagnostic test whicch basically confirmed the problem that service department was already aware of per the VIN#. There are thousands of complaints regarding the 2006 Nissan Altima and a the faulty crankshaft sensor which can cause the vehicle to stop. I am scared to drive on the interstate due to fear that the car will stop and cause a pileup and or even death. I have contacted Nissan America @1 800 647 7261 and they are not cooperative. They are aware of this issue however will not replace the defective crankshaft sensor. Since this is a known issue then I strongly feel that Nissan should take responsibility and replace the defective part. Customers should not fear for their lives when driving and should not have to pay to repair a known defect. I am considering taking legal action against Nissan since they failed to take responsibility and resolve my issue.

46 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. While driving approximately 20 mph the vehicle stalled and the service engine light began illuminating. The vehicle was pulled over and upon restart began driving as normal but the service engine light continued to illuminate. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he was told that there was a recall on his vehicle. The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer where he was informed that his vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 07v527000, engine and engine cooling. The vehicle was being repaired. The failure and current mileages were 47,429.

47 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/25/2010

A few years ago there was a recall on my car for the ecm, it needed to be reprogrammed, I took it in and supposedly got the recall fixed but the service engine soon light kept coming on. The issue kept occurring and I was almost in a few accidents because the car would suddenly shut off while I was driving in traffic. I later learned that the reprogramming caused my sensors to go out and that when it was reprogrammed the sensors should have been replaced also. Most owners including me cannot not afford this and Nissan is not taking on any responsibility, they want to fix half the problem and leave me to pay for the damage done to the vehicle from their malfunctions in the Altimas computers. If I take my car to a Nissan dealership they are going to charge me 80 dollars to hook it up to the machine to turn the light off and tell me that the problem isn't their fault. Alot Nissan owners were told the same exact information the (ecm) would be reset for free but you would have to come out of pocket for the crankshaft sensor to be fixed, if this amount of complaints are identical, then it really means that Nissan corp is ignoring the problem and does not care that their crankshaft sensor is failing along with the (ecm) and because of this some lives are gonna be lost, maybe mine also, cause I cannot not afford to get this fixed and I can't afford to not drive my car.

48 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the service engine warning light consistently remained illuminated. The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 86,325. Updated 12/08/10 updated 12/13/jb.

49 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

Bought a 2005 Nissan Altima, 4 cy. 2. 5l on June 18th 2010 I started having problems with the crankshaft sensor, the dealer gave me a discount to get this fix because they were aware of the problem dealer also told me if I get this fix the car would be working fine. I did replaced the crankshaft position sensor, but the service engine soon light kept coming on. . It reads the same error every time, crankshaft sensor. Recently (07/10/10) my car just stalled on highway made a loud knocking noise blew a big smoke --the fire men and police that showed up believe it threw a rod because it leaks oil everywhere. . And is not drivable. Nissan states they reset the (ecm) but my VIN# isnt in the recall for the crankshaft position sensor so I would have had to pay for that. I then was able to get online and see that alot of Nissan owners were told the same exact information the (ecm) would be reset for free but you would have to come out of pocket for the crankshaft sensor to be fixed,if this amount of complaints are identical. . Then really it boils down to Nissan corp is ignoring and doesn't care that their crankshaft sensor is failing along with the (ecm) and because of this some lives are gonna be lost . . As me and my 2 kids faced a stall on highway i75 with many people going well over 70mph. . We could have been killed!.

50 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

The failure mileage was 84,000 and the current mileage was 87,000.

51 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/09/2010

I have a 2006 Nissan Altima, on 6/9/2010 the oil light came on and the service engine light came on. When I got home I checked my oil and there was no oil in my engine. I contacted Nissan dealership to tell them of the issue and contacted consumer affairs about it. I was told to bring the vehicle to the dealership to get check out. I purchase 2 quarts of oil on 6/9/2010 in which I still have the receipt for. I put 2 quarts of oil in my vehicle and took it to the dealership on 6/15/2010. I was told that they are running a oil consumption test on it because some of the 2006 Nissan Altimas had a recall for a oil consumption problem due to faulty piston rings which I believe caused my vehicle to have a bad cat converter. I contacted the consumer affairs department to find out if my vehicle was in the recall and I was told no. I truly believe my vehicle is one of the recall vehicle because when I took the vehicle back on 7/7/2010 I was told that it needed a new engine and measured under 20 for the oil consumption test. I would like a investigation to be conducted because Nissan has mislead alot of consumers about their vehicles being in the recall but later after about 80,000 miles after the manufacturer warranty expires then the vehicle starts experience these oil consumption problems, service engine light problems. I was told on 7/7/2010 by the service manager that he will put a claim through to the extended service agreement department to provide me with the necessary repairs which is to give my vehicle a new engine due to the oil consumption problem and I was told that this supposed to be covered under my extended service agreement warranty free of charge. I am awaiting a decision. This is definitely a safety issue because my vehicle could stop in the middle of rush hour traffic and I can be killed instantly along with my family and others. All 2006 Nissan Altima's need to be recalled to be tested for this oil consumption problem due to faulty piston rings.

52 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

55 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

I am filing this complaint to document a service engine soon light coupled with a rapid change in rpm and resulting engine stall. While no crash occurred, with the loss of power steering in the parking lot the vehicle almost impacted another coming in the opposite direction. A diagnostic check was run on the vehicle and showed a crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. This vehicle was part of recall campaign 06v223000 and had the engine replaced under warranty at approximately 58,000 miles. Under recall campaign 07v527000 which describes similar symptoms regarding the crankshaft position sensor, those vehicles fixed due to recall campaign 06v223000 are not eligible. However, it is possible that additional contributing factors may lead to the sensor malfunction. The vehicle is scheduled for maintenance to replace the sensor; however, at a cost of $370.

56 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima which was just handed down to my daughter as her first car for her 17th birthday in January. While on her way to school one morning in March the car just shut off at a stop light at a very busy intersection. She obviously had no idea what to do and it was pouring rain. Someone behind her was kind enough to help a stranded teenager and she was able to call me. When I arrived to the intersection I hopped in her car, turned the ignition off and then back on, put the car in drive and it seemed fine. I noticed that the service engine soon light had come on. I immediately drove the car to a mechanic and he pulled up a recall for my exact vehicle and the exact situation. It reads: crank position sensor recall - this could cause the "service engine soon" warning light to come on and the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash. He referred me to see the dealership right away. I drove straight to the dealership and they claim that this recall was VIN specific and my vehicle was not affected. I'm here to tell you that my vehicle is affected and that Nissan does not stand behind the product they produce. Furthermore, Nissan apparently has no regard for the safety of their customers and the peace of mind that the car we bought is reliable. The Nissan dealer said it will be no less than $350 to replace both the cam and crank position sensors with labor. The mechanic shop I went to quoted me $110 for parts and $50 labor totaling $160. Again, I was very disappointed with Nissan. I can tell you for sure that my family will never purchase another Nissan vehicle. I will do my very best to encourage car shoppers to stay far away from Nissan because of the simple fact that after the initial purchase you are on your own. I strongly encourage Nissan to reconsider this particular recall and perform better business practices and customer satisfaction.

57 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

My car stalled twice on Saturday, March 6th. The service engine light came on. I took it to my mechanic who said that I needed a new crank sensor. When he entered my VIN number into the system, the mechanic said that my car had a current recall that was still pending. I purchased the car this past August and the dealership did not inform me of the recall.

59 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

Nissan Altima 2004 with about 77,000 miles. Was part of recall for ecm and I had this done at the dealership winter of 2006. Was to prevent car from stalling. This recall did not fix the problem. 12/31/2009 service engine light came on was told it was the crank shaft sensor. Car stalled while at a stop light without warning. Numerous complaints on the internet about this issue Nissan Altimas - 2002 to 2006. Many people have the sensor replaced only to have the same problem again. Very dangerous as the car appears to drive well and it just shuts off. Have not contacted dealership yet for repair, sent an email to Nissan. Recall for ecm to reprogram to prevent stalling, but the real issue seems to be the sensor that causes the car to stall. This is a real safety issue. Nissan should recall all Altimas 2002-2006 and have this problem fixed before someone gets killed.

60 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Recall number 03y-455 for 2002 Nissan Altima. The consumer stated over the past 24 months the service engine light illuminated intermittently. The vehicle also exhibited poor acceleration and power and it also ran a little rough. But, after driving a couple of miles the light went out, but a few days later the light illuminated again. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions and they performed an engine diagnostic. They were unable to pinpoint the problem as to why the light would illuminate and then go out. The consumer went back to the dealer and they recommended replacing catalytic converter which was apart of the recall.

61 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

2003 Nissan Altima. Consumer expresses concern that other 2003 Nissan Altima vehicles were not identified or included in campaigns related to the airbag/driver control module, airbag sensor and the crankshaft position sensor the consumer stated her vehicle was serviced at the dealer due to the continuous flashing of the air bag light. The dealer informed the consumer the air bag sensor was defective. As a result, the entire unit needed to be replaced. The consumer stated her vehicle was excluded from the air bag recall even though the vehicle was manufactured in 2002. On January 15, 2010 the vehicle began displaying problems such as difficulty cranking, sudden jerks while accelerating and loss of power. On January 16, 2010 the service engine light later illuminated. Testing revealed a defective crankshaft sensor. Also, the O2 sensor and catalytic converter had to be replaced.

62 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

My complaint is similar to many others I have seen. I own a 2005 Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl. It has approximately 47,000 miles. On a recent trip I noticed difficulty cranking and service engine light remained on. I was 5 hours from my home with my family in the car. It was a weekend, so no Nissan dealer was open or even in the vicinity of my location. After crossing all fingers and nursing the car home, I immediately took it to my normal dealer on Monday morning. I was told the "tech found a code for a failed crankshaft position sensor". The service manager checked my VIN for any bulletins or recalls and found none. I was charged $230 to replace the failed part. I called Nissan consumer affairs asking for reimbursement based on the failure frequency rate of this sensor. After many phone calls and voicemails I was told that Nissan would not reimburse the charges. I asked if the failure rate of the sensor was taken into consideration in their decision - the answer was no. I asked what the failure rate was for the sensor - my rep, the regional specialist, did not have that information. Based on my research, it appears there is a statistically significant rate of failure for the crankshaft position sensor along with several redesigns of the oem part. Nissan does not seem to be taking responsibility for the problem. I am disappointed as, up until now, I had been very pleased with the vehicle and with Nissan overall.

63 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 07/02/2009

My car has been at lebruns Nissan dealership 3 times they detected three different problems, the last resort was my blown headgasket. I have a 2002 with 60,000 miles on it I should not be having a headgasket problem!! I have researched different problems and concerns with other owners online and have come across the same problems. Problems containing oil consumption, engine failure, head gaskets, catalytic converters, not starting, service engine light on. Now to me if this is happening to more than a few cars same exact year and model this is a defect on Nissan and they are not stepping up to the plate. I have contacted Nissan again and have gone further into this and have spoken to Nissan north America, I which my specialist returns my phone calls every three days, they have accepted to fix my catalytic converter which is appreciated, but that still does not fix my problem as others have experienced. I feel I have been purchased a lemon vehicle and I am not satisfied, and I will continue to go further until Nissan steps up to the plate and takes fault on there product.

64 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 06/09/2009

The car failed to start after repeated tries, then finally started. The service engine light came on and stayed on. This happened every time I attempted to start the car. I had it repaired, and the repairman said the problem was with the crank shaft sensor. There has been a recall of some 2005 Nissan Altimas for this problem, but according to the manufacturer, my vehicle is not one of them. The symptoms I experienced are exactly the same as those described in NHTSA recall notice 07v527000.

65 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/27/2009

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2. 5sl. Last year I got a recall to reprogram the ecm fixed on my car. My car was shutting down while driving and sometimes when I started the car it would not accelerate. After the recalled was supposedly fixed, this stopped happen until yesterday. I thought everything was fixed, then my car just randomly stopped in traffic and the service engine soon light came on. When I crank it back up and tried to give it gas it would not accelerate. I thought the reason for the recall was to prevent this from happening. I took it to the Nissan who advised me it was something crankshaft position sensor, I was told that this had nothing to do with the ecm reprogramming recall even though Nissan had a recall on crankshaft sensors in 2007. And after reading here and other places I find that this has been a problem from Nissan since 2002. So my question is what was the recall for if it did not fix the problem and why am I being charge to get a Nissan error repaired that apparently alot of other people are having. This is insane!!! does hundreds of people have to die because of this before they decide to do a recall to fix the real problem? will it take a law suit? I think the crankshaft sensors are faulty and need to be recalled. I could have been killed.

66 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 05/22/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Altima. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut off in the middle of the road. The vehicle took approximately five minutes to restart and the steering wheel was difficult to turn because the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number 06v242000 and Nissan recall number r0606, but the dealer stated that the service engine light was illuminated. A diagnostic test would have to be performed before the dealer could repair the recall issue. In addition, the crankshaft would have to be repaired at the cost of $200 before the crank angle sensor could be repaired. This did not make sense to the contact so she called the Nissan manufacturer, but they will not return her call. The failure mileage was 91,000.

67 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the service engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled while driving 15 mph. Through research, the contact found NHTSA campaign id number 06v242000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact believes that the vehicle should be repaired according to the recall since the failures were identical. The failure mileage was 145,000 and current mileage was 150,000.

69 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/15/2009

I bought my 2002 2. 5 Nissan 72k four days ago. A day after I bought it, the service engine light came on. There is excessive oil consumption. I put oil in, and a few miles later I need to add more. I haven't changed anything yet, simply because I can't afford it. Nissan needs to take responsibility. I will tell everyone I know to never buy a Nissan. I am never buying a Nissan again. I've read numerous posts by people who have the same exact problems.

70 Service Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

I am the owner of a 2005 Nissan Altima 2. 5sl. I received a recall notice that advised me the vehicle can stop running without notice which could result in a crash. The recall notice advised that the fix to this problem was the reprogramming of the ecm. To keep my daughter and I safe on the road, I took the car in for the recall as instructed. Before the recall, my service engine light never came on and my vehicle was running fine. Not to long after the recall was done, my service engine soon light came on. Last week I was driving my vehicle, with my 10 month old daughter in the car and the car stalled and shut down on us without warning. Thankfully another vehicle did not hit us. I took it to the dealership who advised me it was the crankshaft position sensor. After doing some reading I find that this has been a problem Nissan has been avoiding since 2002 and I was not the only owner whose vehicle shut down on them without warning. The events, patterns and failures I have experienced are the same sequence of events that so many Nissan Altima owners have reported and complained about. I contacted Nissan directly and was told that they are not responsible. I paid $285 to have the crankshaft sensor replaced. I thought responding to the recall would take care of everything and we would be safe; however, the recall did not stop my car from shutting down on me in the middle of traffic. I believe Nissan is recalling the wrong thing and dodging the responsibility of replacing the default crankshaft sensors that are causing these vehicles to shut down. A vehicle that is subject to shut down while driving without warning is very dangerous and should not be on the road. I saved the crankshaft sensor that was removed from my vehicle just in case someone decides to finally do something about this. An investigation needs to take place before someone is killed or seriously injured on the road or highway.
