Nissan Frontier owners have reported 7 problems related to transmission not engage (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Frontier based on all problems reported for the Frontier.
At ambient temperatures less than 10 degrees, the abs light and traction control light will illuminate upon first movement. This disables the abs system and the traction control system, it will also disable the 4 wheel drive system if not engaged before movement. Ambient temp must rise above 25 degrees to reverse the symptoms. This is a serious safety hazard for anyone that lives in a cold climate.

Traveling at approximately 55 miles per hour on a hill coasting on the down slope, the transmission disengages. When approaching the base of the hill, I stepped on the accelerator to resume speed and the transmission was not engaged causing the motor to speed up, but the vehicle continued to slow down. The gear shift on the automatic transmission was firmly engaged at the time. This has happened several times since purchasing the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2012 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that the gears failed to engage. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the clutch assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 21,456.

For approximately 1 month prior to the transmission failing, I notice a "bucking" from the transmission following shifts and only at low rpm's. I had the transmission fluid levels checked during an oil change in January 2014, and fluid was added (the transmission was not flushed. ) the "bucking" seemed to subside for a few days, however what I next experienced next was far worse. On three or four occassions, the truck suddenly acted at though the transmission disengaged, as if it were in neutral. Each of these incidents occurred on 4 lane highways, at highway speed. As I recall, on at least one of these occassions traffic was very light, and I was able to safely exit the highway. However, on the other occassions, the sudden loss of speed and ability to accelerate very very nearly caused a serious accident.

When set in d, the rpm's dropped. Next day driving 20 sec. And looses all power. Can shift the gear stick, but the transmission does not engage. No audible warning or anything like that. Just stopped driving. Got code p1759 and p1769. Needs new transmission and radiator because the coolant leaked into transmission. $5500 is the quote from the dealer.

Coming home from work the truck started to overheat and the transmission started to skip. I had to turn on the heater to keep the truck from overheating and then the transmission started to engage and disengage. The problem is that the antifreeze is leaking in to the transmission. This is a known problem with Nissan, but they are not fixing the problem. I have three children that are in the truck with me. If that transmission breaks and can cause major problems. Nissan needs to replace the parts.

Weak clutch 2009 Nissan Frontier se 4x4 4. 0 litre, 6 speed man transmission. 10,331 miles and clutch slips in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and little no engagement in reverse. Slips on sudden acceleration. Manufacturer always blame customer's on fault. Truck was not abused by me. Manufacturer is not admitting failure. If you search for Nissan Frontier clutch problems on the internet, you will see, that the same powerplant belongs to a 2006 Nissan xterra and at 13,000 and the 24,000 this person had to replace the clutch as well as slips. 2nd issue, the brakes assembled on my truck were missing on both left and right side front brake pad retainer springs. Brakes pull right and damaged rt rotor. Required machine shop to repair lateral out of round. Possible cause is missing lower retainers springs and now developed into sticking calipers. 3rd issue. Rattle noise from suspension area on uneven road surfaces or manhole lids at slow speeds. Unable to locate cause with suspension both loaded and unloaded. Have used even rubber mallet to no avail.
