36 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2009

When going up hill, the transmission slips gears and causes the vehicle to stop momentarily. It happens occasionally, more frequent now than 5 years ago when I first notified Nissan of the problem. I had taken it in the past to 3 different Nissan dealers, I got 3 different diagnosis. Made most of the repairs but the transmission replacement. I was finally told by woodland hills California Nissan that it was the computer link to the transmission not receiving proper signals.

37 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2009

Consistent transmission slip on 2004 Nissan Maxima. Transmission slips when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear when warmed up. When shifting the engine will rev like it is in neutral and then the transmission will violently slam into gear.

38 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

2004 Nissan Maxima - transmission issue on cars with over 80,000 miles. Transmission would slip gears and "kick" between gearshifts. During downshifts, car stalls between gear shifts. During upshifts, car either slips gears with engine revving or "kicks" really hard into the next gear. Happens when car is warmed up. The kick feels like I am being rear ended.

39 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

I almost got involve into an accident. I just bought a 2004 Nissan Maxima se (automatic) and its giving me transmission problems. The transmission slips (when the car is hot) between second and third gear, sometimes from first to second. I just wanted to buy a reliable car because we were going to have a baby. She was in the car when the accident was about to happen. My wife, my 4 months old baby and I where going to see my family and needed to take the highway. I needed to make a stop before entering the highway (to enter to the right lane). Since my car jerks when it shifts from first to second gear and from second to third gear, a tractortrailer almost hit me when I entered the highway. Because the transmission in my car is not reliable. It might get me into an accident because of the design flaw from the Nissan corporation. I am not the only person complaining about the transmission on 2004 Nissan Maxima models. Give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions. Lou valdo.

40 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2009

I bought a used 2004 Nissan Maxima se and around 65k the car's transmission started slipping and jerking when going from second to third gear. I was almost in an accident when making a turn, the car lost acceleration, jerked, made a bang, and shot forward causing me to momentarily lose control of the car. I was told by two different mechanics that I have a transmission problem and these model cars are notorious for that. Is this true?.

41 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

Problem is with transmission slipping and car lunges go uphill or after shifting from reverse and back into drive. After initial purchase of the car I complained that the transmission did not feel correct and car lunged and slipped but I was told by the dealership that they could not duplicate the incident. I have been told by a mechanic that the transmission needs replacement. The car has 99,000 miles and is now out of warranty. This defect should not be the responsibility of the consumer as Nissan must have been aware of these issues from all the similar complaints I have read about online. This is a failure in the system of the car which I attempted to rectify while the car was under warranty. Nissan should be pressured to recall the transmissions for this model car as it is patently defective in its design and I feel they are well aware of the issue. Driving with a transmission that can fail at any minute is not something I look forward to . I understand from the internet that similar claims have been reported to your office by Maxima owners but I could not find in the data basis. Although this issue is not life threatening as the Toyota incidents this is still another story that a defect has probably been keep quiet in hopes that the injured consumer will just pay for the repairs and go away. Thank you for your consideration.

42 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

2004 Nissan Maxima, transmission slippage.

44 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2009

'04 Maxima, maintained regularly, original owner, purchased in summer of '03(first batch of assy. Line); transmission slips from 2nd to 3rd gear. This has been a problem since the first 25k miles on the car. I got the trans fluid flushed and was fine but then it happened again at 50k miles. I asked the local repair shops and the dealership why this keeps re-occurring and they both said that "that's just the way that car is. " like clock work it happens every 25k miles. I continue to get the trans fluid flushed/changed every 25k, car is now at 115k miles, just had it done at 100k and problem is starting again already. I'm fearing one day soon the transmission is just going to go all together and I will be looking at probably $4k - $6k for repair. I love my Maxima and bought it for the sole purpose that they have a reputation for long lasting cars, but it seems there were some flaws when they introduced this new body style year (not sure how different the engines or transmissions are in comparison to the previous models) and these types of issues are not making me want to purchase another one in the future. The service advisor at my local dealership states his mother owns an '06 Maxima (same trans) and just had to replace the transmission due to the same issue. He told me, "it's coming. It's if it's when". This issue is posted all over this site and many others. Why isn't Nissan stepping up to do something about this?.

45 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2009

2004 Nissan Maxima transmission slipped and caused me to slam into wall. Airbags didn't deploy, had my children in backseat with seatbelts on. This car is dangerous. I can't believe the NHTSA isn't forcing a recall on all transmissions. I looked it up and thousands have the same problem. I'm definitely going to look into a suit against Nissan and as well as the NHTSA if nothing is done. That's a guarantee and I'm sure I have many supporters.

46 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2009

I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Here recently my transmission has been slipping, I began to look online for recalls and found that several other owners have had the same problem. I think Nissan should recall this problem, because my car only has 85,000 miles and has been well taken care of. I took it to the shop and was told they wasn't for sure but thought it was the valve body that needed to be replaced, and it was going to cost 2,000-3,000 dollars, I was astonished that this would happen. I thought Nissan was supposed to be a well made car that is why we bought it. Also the mechanic I took my car to said he did not know what the problem was cause it was not showing anything on the machine, so he called Nissan and they told him what it was and they had several of that part that was needed to fix the car in stock, so they obviously know at Nissan that they would be needing several of those parts to have so many readily available and I think Nissan should be ashamed of themselves for that and not recalling the part. Obviously Nissan would not be making a part that cost so much money and not be able to sell them so shame on them.

47 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2009

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with 124k miles that has transmission problems. Specifically, the transmission slips between 1st and 2nd gear and between 3rd and 4th gear. I have been researching this matter and found countless owners of Nissan Maximas who are dealing with the same problem. One owner has replaced the transmission in a 2004 Maxima three times. Given the vast number of complaints this same issue, is there anything being done to hold the manufacturer accountable? they sell these cars for high dollars with the knowledge that this defect exists. For that reason, they should correct the problem. If you google "2004 Nissan Maxima transmission problems", you will be inundated with owners of these and other Maxima's citing transmission problems. I had my transmission flushed today. I was also told that I need a new transmission! I cannot afford another transmission and I believe Nissan should recall these vehicles and pay for the necessary transmission repair. Today while driving, the vehicle hesitated before lurching forward into gear. I was almost rear ended by another vehicle. This problem is a huge safety concern and needs to be addressed. I would hate for a member of your family or mine to be involved in an accident with one of these unsafe vehicles. Please initiate a recall. It will save lives and indemnify the Maxima owners who have spent hard earned money to buy these beautiful lemons.

50 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

I bought a 2004 Nissan Maxima sl in 2007, with 41750 miles on it from Nissan dealership in okc, oklahoma. In July 2009 the transmission started slipping when shifting from first to second gear at approx. 20-25mph. The car is an automatic with a v-6 engine. When this started the car had appox. 64k miles on it. I took the car to a local Nissan dealership in July 2009 and they told me a drain and fill of the transmission fluid was needed. Within 3 weeks after performing the drain/fill the same shifting issue resulting. When braking or accelerating the transmission does not shift resulting in a severe jerking of the car. The jerking can be o harsh that my head will hit the head rest behind me when the transmission finally will shift. Current, my Nissan Maxima is once again back at the dealership and they are telling me that I need to replace the transmission. Once again my car only ha 64k miles and I've only owned it for 2 years the transmission issues must be own by Nissan however they will not assist with answers or a recall. This might explain the extremely large difference in the retail price of the car the trade-in price of an 2004 Maxima, it's close to a $10k difference. I bought my car for $20k+ and currently trade in is only $8-10k. Nissan needs to be held responsible to recalling these transmissions and replacing them with a new correct make.

51 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown low speed, the transmission continued to slip gears. The dealer advised the contact that the engine mounts were defective and would need to be replaced. The engine mounts were replaced and the transmission filter and fluids were replaced. One month later, the transmission failed. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the contact was advised that the transmission would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000 and the current mileage was approximately 100,000.

53 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

Transmission always slips had it remanufactured 2700 dollars later same problem. This leads up to and causes other problems especially since transmission needs to be worked on every 3 months hands are always taking out putting back together not to good for the car this prob jus doesn't go away. Sensors went bad now timing chain. Problem after problem but to me and mechanics I have talked to all leads back to the defective transmissions these 04 Maximas have.

54 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2009

A few months ago my transmission started to slip in 1st an 2nd gear. When I would run errands for more than hour it would really start to act up. Now I can not drive for 30 minutes without it seriously slipping gears hard. I can only drive the car a few miles because of this. I took the car to a shop an was told that the valve body needs to be replaced with a rebuilt transmission mechanic also stated that the valve body should not be a wearable component and should have been a recall on it. Now the car sits most of the time because I can not afford to fix it. Please help me.

55 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2009

I recently purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima. I love the car, besides the fact I have had more problems with it in the last few months . This is extremely frustrating. I have always assumed Nissan's were dependable cars. I know I purchased it used, but the problems I am having should not be occurring at 90,000 miles. Really disappointing. Transmission was slipping so I took it to Nissan dealer paid for a flush 200 dollars picked it up next day and transmission went out. Now I have to pay for whole cost of transmission plus other reprogramming computer modules and cam sensors. This is not the first Maxima and something needs to be done to Nissan because they know this is a big problem with alot of 2004 Maximas.

56 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2009

My problem seems to be the same one that thousands of people are having. I am a used car dealer and have bought (3) 2004 Nissan Maximas sl. Every one of them has had the same problem. I know any sensible person reading this complaint would simply say "idiot, stop buying Nissans!!! but I was trying to give our auto industry the benefit of the doubt that since so many people had the exact same problem that they would at least realize and admit that , maybe its not the world that has the problem. It's the 2004 Maxima transmissions. When the car gets warm, the transmission slips in between 20 and 30 mph. It also jerks and delays (once it gets hot) when going into gear. Several credible transmission repair shops (I. E. Mr. Transmission), have traced it back the same thing. The faulty valve body in the transmission. Now as a voice of the people and after reading complaint after complaint after complaint ; surely there has to be some non-biased agency, watch dog, or authority that is not going to let these car-making bullies rip all of these people off especially when they have been made aware of this design flaw. We understand that they have a business to run and that they can't just stay in business fixing every single complaint that arouses but this is not a quick fix for the consumers and it is costing hard working consumers millions of dollars in repairs. Please somebody help the working class.

57 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2009

This is a very big problem with 2004 Nissan Maxima se automatic trans. There are complaints all over the internet regarding transmission jerking and slipping on these particular cars. Nissan will not do anything to correct this problem. My Maxima jerks really hard while transitioning from reverse to first while backing out. Also jerks suddenly while down shifting on freeway or streets from 4 to 3 rd gear. I am really nervous driving this car it jerks often and to replace the transmission will cost about $4000. This car is 5 yrs old. Please advise.

58 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2009

I have a Nissan Maxima 2004 and the transmission slips between 3rd and 4th gear. I was reading on the internet about several owners of my make, model and year Maxima that are having the same issue. Acceleration when come to a stop and transmission slip.

59 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2009

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima- I purchased it used in 2007. It has 90k miles on it, I love the car but for the past year my transmission has been slipping. The car jerks heavily when I switch from reverse to drive, when I slow down to make a turn, when I accelerate. Some days you won't feel it then other days you get whiplash because it happens the whole car ride. I have had my mechanic flush my transmission fluid, brought it to Nissan dealers they told me it was my motor mount, and of course when they test drive my car, they don't feel it. One dealer told me I need a new transmission that costs $4000, I can't afford that!!!! I have researched online about this issue and every site I come to has a plethora of complaints with us all having a 2004 Maxima with the same issue!!!! this cannot be a coincidence, there is an issue with this and Nissan needs to take responsibility. I bought this car for 17k in 2007 and its worth nothing at this point because of this jerking issue.

60 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2009

2004 Nissan Maxima transmission slips occasionally. Trouble shifting from 1 to 2 gear. Sometimes when I start the car it barely moves until it catches up to the 2nd gear. It's winding out and grinding. Then other days it's fine as if it never had a problem. The car has also shut off on me for no reason.

61 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2009

I just purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima and I am experiencing problems with the transmission. When up or down shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd the car jerks periodically. While leaving a red light the car revved up from 1st to 2nd gear and when the car finally engaged I nearly hit the car in front of me. On another occasion while leaving a red light I almost got rearended because my car started to move and then the transmission slipped and then jerked into gear. I went on line to see if there was a fix for the problem without taking it to the shop and that's when I seen some Nissan Maxima forums and discovered that there hundreds of 04 Maxima owners that are experiencing the same transmission problems. Most people say that they have had to replace their transmission at an average cost of 3500. 00 dollars. I am a hard working american and I will be paying on this car for the next 4 years and now I am worried I will have to spend 3500. 00 that I don't have on a transmission that appears to be a defective part from Nissan. I expect more out of a 5 year old car.

62 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2009

Transmission slips then jerks really hard when going into 1st and 2nd gear and going from drive to reverse making it impossible to accelerate to get out of harm's way. The bad transmission causes wear on motor mounts therefore creating another horrible situation. I am among so many that have had issues with this make/model car. . . . Somebody do something!.

63 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

I bought my 2004 Nissan Maxima 3. 5 sl used from a dealership that I worked at. I bought it with 68,798 miles on it on October 31st, 2008. Within 2 weeks of owning the car, I noticed transmission issues. The transmission would slip going into second gear and when it would finally shift it would be very harsh, harsh enough to chirp the tires. After a couple months of this, the transmission really started acting up. The day I took it in to have the transmission replaced, it started slipping going into third gear as well. On the freeway home from work, it would not go into overdrive. I turned around and went back to the dealership to drop it off. In February of 2009, I had the dealership I worked for replace the transmission under the aftermarket warranty that I purchased with the vehicle. Not only did the warranty company order the wrong transmission 2 times, but I was without my car for 37 days. Luckily the warranty company paid for a rental car! less than one year later, I had the same problems occurring. Luckily I knew the symptoms and had the transmission replaced again under the 12 month 12,000 warranty that came with the Nissan remanufactured transmission. This was just about 1 year after the first replacement and about 8,000 miles. So, long story short, first transmission replacement was done in February 2009, second transmission was replaced in February 2010. The dealership I work for now happens to be where the car was always serviced, so I know it's history. It was very well maintained. By the way, my Maxima has the 4-speed automatic.

64 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The problem is the automated transmission. The transmission slips so hard that it makes the car jerk forward. Even one passenger thought I hit something in the street. Had the transmission fluid replaced, but the problem continues.

65 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima with approx 102k miles on it and the automatic transmission has been slipping from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear quite regularly. It also shifts very rough from 1st to 2nd and back down from 2nd to 1st. After reading several blogs online this seems to be a very common problem with the 2004 Maxima but for some reason there has been no recall. I feel as though Nissan should definitely be held liable for this problem considering how common a problem it is.

66 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

1. Begin experiencing transmission slippage around 65k miles. Had the transmission services. The problem subsided for a short period. Had the transmission serviced again for the same problem at 80k miles. At 90k the conditioned worsened; the car jerked when slowing and going from reverse to drive - Nissan could not pinpoint the problem. Took it back to Nissan and they recommended a new transmission - cost 4k. 2. The failure has worsened. It happens every day - some days the car slams into drive or when slowing down - the intensity is changes day to day. The failure has caused someone to run into the back of my vehicle. 3. Nothing has been done to correct the failure. Transmission services has been done to improve the failure and from what I have read a new transmission does not necessarily correct the failure - some owners experience the same symptoms with the new transmission after x number of miles.

67 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2008

I have a Nissan Maxima 2004 and the transmission slips and jerks going from 1st to 2nd or downwards. I know I m not the only one with this problem. Im at 101k miles and the transmission shouldn't be doing this at this point. I understand this a manufacturer problem. They charge me 4000 to get a replacement and I feel Nissan should pay for it call a recall on these cars.

68 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2008

My 2004 Nissan Maxima has a safety issue. The car's transmission slips and gives a sever bucking or jerking when shifting gears. This usually happens when slowing to go around corners or in stop and go traffic. I am the 2nd owner. The first owner maintained his vehicle at sutherland Nissan where he purchased the car new. The dealer, who sold me the car too, initially said the car is in excellent shape and they checked it out stating it only needed an oil change -which I did. Two months later, after telling the dealership that my transmission is jerking and bucking, they said I needed to change the transmission fluid and replace the motor mounts -which I did. They said it would fix the jerking problem but it didn't. Now they state that I need a new transmission. I am afraid that someone is going to slam into me from the back because after the car jerks it is impossible to pick speed back up. Please consider a recall on this transmission. I have read hundreds of complaints with this same transmission problem and Nissan will not help nor admit that there is a design flaw with the 2004 Nissan Maxima transmission. Thanks so much!.

70 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2008

I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima which was purchased March 2006. Have replaced the struts and later found them to have some sort of defect. The radio/cd player went out about 6 months after the purchase of the vehicle. The horn went out, fog lights had a short, had numerous brake problems. A/c had to be re-charged 1 year after purchase. . This list goes on. October 16, 2008, I had my vehicle towed due both transmission cooler linesbursing on the fwy. The shop repaired both lines totaling $428. 54. Today is November 24, 2008 and my vehicle needs to go back to the shop due to the transmission slipping and jerking into gear. I have gone on line and read all the complaints for the 2004 Nissan Maxima's and the transmission problems. I am having the same issue the other owners have.
