36 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

Driving on the freeway and began to take the exit . Stopped at the light to turn left and the car had no power. The gas pedal was to the floor and nothing happened. I turned the car off , sat a few minutes, started the car up and crept into the intersection, trying to cross the highway, made it to the side of the road, turned the car off again, sat about 5 minutes and then again started it up. It traveled maybe a half a block, stopped, turned the key off, sat in the highway (very dangerous) and preceded to travel another block to my destination. Parked the car and called a tow truck to get it back home and to the Nissan dealer. He has just called and said it is the transmission at a cost of 4500. 00 dollars. I can't believe it, the car has only 87000 miles one it. After reading many discussion groups on the internet I find that alot of owners of the 2003 Murano have had the same problem. We called Nissan and they will not do anything for us. We need to ban together and get some action. I don't know how a company can get away with this. Too many incidents to ignore.

37 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2009

After being in stop and go traffic, my 2003 Nissan Murano se 2wd does not accelerate properly. Once the gas pedal is pressed, the car barely starts to move, but the tachometer continues to increase. At about 3000 rpm, or roughly 1-2 seconds under normal acceleration from a complete stop, the Murano then lurches forward. This is very dangerous and happens when the car has experienced long periods of stop and go traffic or being idle. I took it to Nissan and they claimed to have fixed the problem by changing the throttle body chamber. The Murano did not have any more problems until about 4 months after the repair. Since then, it has been acting up as traffic conditions warrant. I can "reset" or stop the lurching from occurring by turning off the ignition and then turning it back on. The problem is, I'm usually in traffic when I do this, and the problem resumes about 5-10 minutes later. If I get away from the traffic, stop and let the car sit for a bit, then turn the engine back on and drive in normal traffic, then the problem does not occur.

38 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2009

I have owned 2003 Nissan Murano for 5 years and have 110,000 miles on it. . It has now some transmission problems. . . . When starting from a stop, the transmission hesitates and then lurches forward. This is dangerous as if at a stop light, you step on gas and nothing happens. . . . Then suddenly the car lurches forward violently. . This is happening more frequently, and is becoming very scary.

39 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

I have a Nissan 2003 Murano, when in a stopped position, the car will fail to accelerate until a few seconds later, which can cause a safety hazard when in traffic. I am not the only owner of this type of vehicle that has this issue, there are many of us. I had it check and told I needed to have the cvt replaced.

40 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

I own a 2003 Nissan Murano. I currently has 67,000 miles. Over the last month I have had major issues with acceleration, the vehicle loses power or doesn't respond at all when pressing the gas pedal. After a 1-3 second pause the transmission finally engages sporadically and "clunks" very hard. I have been told by the dealer that the transmission needs to be replaced. The Nissan dealer has informed me that there is no repair of this cvt transmission. This problem is occurring every time that I drive the vehicle and is very dangerous. This issue has happened several times in busy traffic and has caused several near collisions. I am very disappointed. I have never had to replace a transmission under 100,000 miles.

41 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

I am one of probably thousands of Nissan Murano owners with the cvt transmission with the same problem. I drive a congested freeway and at least twice, sometimes three times a week, in stop and go traffic the car starts to hesitate when I step on the accelerator. I actually have found that "feathering" it helps from having it jerk forward as I step on the accelerator, but it is still extremely dangerous. This is continuous when I come to a stop or almost to a stop until, as others have mentioned, I have an opportunity to turn the ignition off. Difficult to turn the ignition off while driving in stop and go traffic on the freeway. It goes away for a while after I turn it off, but if the driving conditions are the same, it happens again. I took it to a mechanic who stated that the problem is a sensor inside the transmission, but there is no way to fix it. The transmission would require replacement, as there are no re-builds available and Nissan does not have parts for this transmission available for re-builds. The quote for replacement is over $8,000. I believe this is approximately what the car is worth. This is an extremely dangerous situation, and I am concerned that someone will be injured or worse as a result of it, if it has not already happened.

42 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2008

At 61000 miles my Murano right after I bought it started to have a problem with acceleration at stop-n-go traffic. Also it has a burning rubber smell. The replacement of the transmission is very expensive. Plus the car only has 61,000 miles.

43 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

Nissan Murano 2003, when stopping in traffic or trying to change lanes the car does not respond. This happens every day. Took to the Nissan dealer it has to do with transmission problems. This has been happening for the past few moths now. Apparently the 2003 Murano is experiencing this problem. Please help. The coute was over $5,000. Also the radio they installs in this cars have a problem with the cd changer. For some reason the right side fails to sound. They explain its a problem with all this radios. Also called clarion, the manufacturer an also said the same thing.

44 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2008

In stop-n-go traffic, no initial acceleration when pedal pressed to floor. Then car would suddenly jump forward. Caused multiple instances of nearly crashing into cars in front of me or not making it through intersections. Brought to dealer multiple times and nothing was done. Finally, no acceleration at all and car now won't move forward. Was told entire transmission needs replacing for $6500. . . . . . At only 100,000 miles! a transmission should last longer than that and it should have been fixed when I first started complaining and seeing symptoms.

45 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2008

The cvt transmission in my 2003 Nissan Murano has failed (135,000 miles) and the dealer (norris Nissan of ellicott city, MD) says the repair will cost over $6,000. I have read on the edmonds car chat site that there are thousands of similar complaints. This is potentially a very dangerous situation as well as an expensive one.

46 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2008

Nissan Murano 2003 awd, hesitate in traffic, after engine gets hot, car does not want go forward at red lights, almost got rear ended because car would not move, took to the dealer, said they could not find anything wrong with car.

47 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

The transmission has been problematic from day one. I have kept up regular service at it has now completely failed. It is a 2003 Nissan Murano with 109k miles on it.

48 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2008

I purchased a 2003 Nissan Murano with 23,000 miles on it in March of 2004. After the purchased I took it to a dealer for the 100 point inspection and was told everything was fine. By the end of that year for the first time my car failed to accelerate. I thought nothing of it since it only happened once and went and got the spark plugs changed. Next by the summer of 2005 it happened again. I explained to the dealer and they said you need your fuel injectors cleaned. I got them cleaned and it went away again but every once and a while it would slow down during acceleration. I made it to 2006 and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. The dealer said I need to change my catalytic converter bank 1. He showed me which one and replace it. A week later the same thing happened again(check engine light). I was told the wrong converter was replaced. I purchased the other one and everything is good for a while. Then the slow acceleration got even worse. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong. Needless to say I'm now out of warranty. I then took it to another mechanic that wasn't a dealer and he showed me a technical bulletin about slow acceleration. I brought it to Nissan's attention and they said it could be a possibility. The told me I need to replaced the valve body. I bought it and they put it on with even worse results. Now they said I need a transmission. I asked how come they didn't check this out if it was a known problems. They said we need the look for the problem. They know about the bulletin but since its not a recall they don't have to check for it. Why isn't this problems a recall if its known. Are they waiting for your car to come off warranty to check. Now I have to look for a transmission but I'll probably have the same problem eventually. Please stop this corruption.

49 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

There are two problems with the car that seem to keep happening over and over again, broken boot struts, but the major is with the acceleration/cvt system. It all of a sudden gives no gas when you push and then surges forward at a high speed which is very very dangerous- after reading many others posts it seems that this is a very common problem for the 03' Murano, for a vehicle that has a little over 65,000 miles just had the major 60k service done and has had all regular service visits by dealer and I am very concerned for my safety and this definitely seems like a recall problem- replaced crankshaft position sensors, sensor asm, camshaft, gasket sill ring rubb, o rings, etc.

50 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

My 2003 Murano is now clocking 133,000 miles. I notice a problem within the last 20,000 miles whenever I get stuck in stop and go traffic. I would step on the gas and nothing would happen for a few seconds and suddenly it takes off. I had to slam on my brake to prevent smacking into the car in front. This problem continues throughout the stop and go traffic ordeal. My dealer informed me that he is not aware of this problem and suggested a transmission service. This problem has continued but always after driving the car for a while or when I am in stop and go traffic. This is a safety issue. I understand from the dealer that it is a pressure sensor problem that is typical for model that I have. The problem is the cost repair is half of the value of the car.

51 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2008

Transmission issue. Car will not move more than 2-3 miles per hour for ~100 feet, then "jumps" into gear. Occurs with engine warm. Very dangerous at traffic lights and stop signs.

52 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

We drive a 2003 Nissan Murano awd. After stop and go traffic, the vehicle will "stall" in traffic (rpms drop to idle, and the car stops moving) when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Within 2-5 seconds the engine will rev up (presumable as far as it goes, but we take our foot off the pedal by then), and the vehicle will lurch forward and drive normally until we stop again. By the nature of city driving this often happens in intersections and other like dangerous places. I've asked my wife not to drive it in traffic anymore as I think this is dangerous. This happens repeatedly now at 66k miles. We've taken this to two dealers who have recommended everything from replacing the valve body to replacing the entire transmission.

53 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2008

Previously in love with my 2003 Nissan Murano, within the last 4 months (100,000 miles) I have had so many problems. Throttle body, cv boots, axle seals, front and back motor mounts, radiator, and most recently needs a 4,000 transmission repair. Just as others have reported, my car gets to the point where it will not accelerate, even if I push the accelerator to the floor, then it suddenly lunges forward. I am so disappointed and refuse to spend another dollar on this car, which is falling apart at an exponential speed. This is only a 6year old car!.

54 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2008

My 2003 Nissan Murano has transmission problems. After driving a couple of hours on highway, it will not pull up a hill, pass a vehicle, especially if I press on the accelerator hard, it jerks, slows down and almost stops. It only does this when warm/hot. It won't do it when cold, so the Nissan dealer can not see the problem. It seems to be getting worse with age. It is a very dangerous condition. I dare not let anyone drive it in the family except me. Nissan should replace the transmission. It is obviously a common defect from what I read on the internet.

55 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

Transmission problems with 2003 Nissan Muranos. Very widespread. Car needs new valve body and possibly new transmission. Up to $7000 to fix cars that may only be worth twice that.

56 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2008

Was driving on the highway at 75mph (normal speed for interstate travel in montana) when our Murano started run at 4000 rpm abnormally. It ran at this rate for awhile then it felt like the transmission was loosing power and I had to take it off cruise control because it couldn't keep up and maintain constant speed. Vehicle start to jump in speed and then loose power and continued to do this until I pulled the vehicle off the highway. When I had stopped I tried accelerating to get back onto the highway with no success. I had the accelerator pedal to the floor and had no power. I turned the vehicle off/on and had slight acceleration enough to pull back onto the highway but almost got hit because transmission wouldn't accelerate properly and fast enough. Took Murano back to dealer to check out engine/transmission and they said after conducting diagnostic it needed a new transmission. I said the vehicle only has around 65,000 miles I've never heard of a 5 year old car needing a new transmission. What's worse they said is the transmission has to be ordered directly from Nissan and cost $4200! total cost for the repair would be $5600!!! this is no small repair problem! a 2003 vehicle with only 65k miles on it should not need a new transmission!!! Nissan should be held accountable for such a manufacturers defect that had the potential to kill my family on that highway if all power had been lost suddenly cruising at 75mph in traffic!!!!!.

57 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated she looses power when you she is sitting still. When she accelerates the gas pedal does not move. The suddenly it surges and takes off. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was told the failure occurred from a new valve problem which relates to the transmission and they have to replace the valve. This has been a continuous failure for over a year. The manufacture was notified that her vehicle is out of warranty and there is no recall that includes her VIN number. That failure mileage was 121,700. Bl.

58 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

My Murano has a loss of power after sitting in traffic. After stopped in traffic, I press the gas pedal and the car doesn't move for about 6 or 7 seconds. Then it takes off quickly. This dangerous because someone may hit me from behind when the light turns green and the Murano doesn't go. Nissan dealer says the car doesn't show any failure codes, but thinks the transmission needs replacing. 84,000 miles.

59 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2008

2003 Nissan Murano, car will drive and then when stop at light or traffic car will not move, the car will stall causing to put me and my child in danger. It happens all the time and it happened during rush hour traffic. Could have been killed.

60 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2008

At about 61,000 miles, my 2003 Murano (bought new in 2004) began hesitating when I accelerate from a stop in traffic. This occurs everytime I'm in stop-and-go traffic for about 10 minutes. When I press on the gas, the car doesn't move and then a few seconds later surges. It's very scary, especially when trying to turn left in traffic. Very dangerous. I've seen many similar complaints. I have not yet brought it into the dealership.

61 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2008

Engine periodically hesitates, sometimes severely, upon acceleration from a complete stop. Usually when engine is warm, after stop and go traffic. Had it into dealer while still under warranty but they said they could not identify the problem. Car is now out of warranty, problem is worse. Now they say it is valve body assembly of Nissan cvt transmission. Cost is $2100 for repair.

62 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2008

My 2003 Murano has been slowing to 35 - 40 mph on the freeway. I took it to the dealership and they say I need a new transmission for $5,500. My car has 61,000 miles on it. I am very disappointed with this vehicle. Rather than pay this, I am forced to trade it in for another vehicle which will put me upside down.

63 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

2003 Nissan Murano-stalling out and barely going-took to local mec. And he replaced mass air flow sensor @ approximate 83,227miles. This problem started after the Murano was in the gray daniels Nissan shop here in jackson,ms for air filter and brake work. No help from them ; just my problem. Well I will voice my thoughts to everyone on not buying a Nissan. Edmonds has many complaints about this problem . Just another take your money with no service. Wkp.

64 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2008

2003 Nissan Murano is failing at 70,000 miles. The car is jolting when the accelerator is pressed. Check engine light comes on. This apparently is happening to tens of thousands of Murano owners around the same mileage. It is a wonder that Nissan ends the warranty at 60,000 miles. They are neglecting the problem and should be recalling their product!.

65 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2008

Failure involves loss of power when the gas pedal is depressed. This problem occurs after car is warmed up and then put in a stop and go driving environment (heavy city traffic). Car will lurch forward, but only after pedal is depressed close to the half way point. This obviously is a dangerous situation and I have so far avoided accident by allowing distance between myself and the car in front. Problem occurs 70-80% of time aforementioned circumstances are present. Nissan dealer says problem would be very difficult to diagnose because no warning light appears on dashboard.

66 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2008

When driving home from work one day in stop and go traffic, car will hesitate a few seconds before accelerate slowly forward. This increase the risk of getting hit from the vehicle behind because the Murano simply would stand still for a few seconds when traffic light turns green and driver behind me expect the car to be moving. Car has only 95k miles, this is similar to the transmission issues other drivers have that Nissan wouldn't address or recall. I hope Nissan would stand behind their products and address this.

67 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2008

2003 Nissan Murano with 3. 5l engine and cvt transmission. Vehicle hesitates, then suddenly surges forward in slow traffic after being driven on highway. Very dangerous problem with vehicle. Frequency: problem occurring about every day lately. Dealer will not mention this problem yet.

68 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2008

1. I was stuck in rush hour traffic 2. It occurs when I'm in stop and go traffic 3. Deal said I needed a new transmission I feel the cvt transmission was exp. Model I have read other Murano owner (same problem).

69 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

My 2003 Nissan Murano is unsafe due to the fact you press the gas pedal and it does not move, then you press again to the floor and it lunges forward. Nissan is aware of this problem with several complaints. It is very unsafe. I will not drive my children in the car.

70 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

I have a Nissan Murano. Ever since I purchased the car it is used, I have nothing but trouble with it. The place I got it from replaced the transmission and the new one is slipping everytime I drive it.
