1 Differential Unit problem of the 2007 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/20/2019

Driving on the highway and all of a sudden started sounding like something was binding. When I got a chance to look under the vehicle, I can clearly see that the rear differential has shattered, broken completely apart and can see the gears inside. I googled 07 Murano rear differential and the exact same thing keeps coming up. The current rear differential looks to have a yellow grease mark on it. Indicates to me the part has been replaced before and the replacement did the same thing.

2 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

Mechanic says the differential has to be replaced. Cannot afford a long list of repairs already spent on this car, and now this, impossible to afford and will never buy a Nissan product ever again. I just read the long list of issues with the cvt transmissions on the 2003-8 Murano that all of us are being saddled with. How does Nissan expect any customer brand loyalty?.

3 Differential Unit problem of the 2006 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 03/28/2012

Recently my 2006 Nissan Murano started making grinding noises when going up hills and turning corners. After taking it to a few shops who said it might be the cvt transmission that was covered under an extended warranty since so many people have had issues, I went and took it to the dealer. Their diagnosis was a electronic coupler assembly failure which has to do with my rear differential. The car is not balancing the load properly and the transmission is slipping. There is a 2 month waiting list for this part because it has gone bad in so many Nissan vehicles. Yet there has been no recall and no extended warranty put on it. The vehicle is said to be relatively unsafe to drive but they are months out on getting parts in for it to be fixed.

4 Differential Unit problem of the 2007 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 01/24/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, she heard a loud noise that she could not distinguish and drove the vehicle to a local mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed that the vehicle had a fractured rear differential and stated that it needed to be replaced. The dealer did not offer any assistance. The manufacturer failed to offer any assistance either because there were no recalls addressing the failure. The vehicle was awaiting repairs at a private facility. The failure and current mileages were 75,000.

5 Differential Unit problem of the 2007 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

My 2007 Nissan Murano's differential just failed on a highway without any warning. I was with three kids on a high way and it was pitch dark. The only thing I did that day was to change my rear tyres and I have no idea if this might have contributed to it. Upon research for a new part, I realised that quite a lot of people have had the same complaints about their Murano and I am not sure if they should be forced to recall the vehicle.

6 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

I have a 2004 Nissan Murano. I did only a little bit of research before I bought it because I really liked the way they looked and drove. Shortly after the purchase, I began to read about the poor quality of the cvt transmission. I bought the car with 100,000 kms on it so I was quite worried as I don't think many people can afford a new transmission at several thousands of dollars, especially me. Not long after that, Nissan came out with an extended warranty on the cvt's because pretty much every Murano owner has a problem with it sooner or later. Needless to say, im at 160,000 kms on it right now and sure enough, im having big problems now. A huge knocking noise is coming from the transmission that kind of sounds like a helicopter taking off. Every once in a while for some time now, when I've been at a stop light, I can literally put the gas pedal down to the floor and there will be no response for about 5 seconds, then the car will jolt forward. My Murano is at the Nissan dealership right now and they're telling me the problem is coming from the front differential and that they won't cover it under the new warranty. The differential is inside of the transmission and therefore part of it, yet they won't cover it. So right now im pretty much at the point where I need to get rid of this thing ASAP and get something else. If Nissan refuses to step up to the plate with this worldwide problem, unfortunately im going to have to turn my back on Nissan from here on out which is really too bad, because this is the 3rd Nissan ive had with only minor issues until now. The magnitude of this problem is more than enough for me to never buy a Nissan again. Somebody needs to do something about this. I wish I would have known that Nissan teamed up with fischer price to build the Murano. . . . . I never would have bought one!.

7 Differential Unit problem of the 2003 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 06/04/2011

While driving at 25 mph, suddenly we heard very loud bum, bum, bum like noise. We stopped at near gas station, and the oil appeared beneath the rear of the car. The mechanic told us that the rear differential unit is split open in half. We were told that if that would happen at high speed the flying rear differential debris could puncture the nearby gas tank.

8 Differential Unit problem of the 2005 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 12/09/2010

Rear differential on Nissan Murano with 87k miles just blew up as we were driving on the highway. The car had been to a body shop for a new bumper, oil change, and new tires within the last month, and none of these experts noticed any issues with leaking fluid etc. The Nissan service center told us the fluid was completely gone (way before it ever should have been an issue). This vehicle does not have a hitch and has only been used for urban/highway use. When the differential blew up, it destroyed both rear axles, which could have caused us to have an accident. Best case scenario, it only costs us $4000 to fix.

9 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 01/31/2010

The rack and pinion and rear differential of my 2009 Murano le is defective. The rack and pinion has stopped working twice and needs to be replaced for the third time. The rear differential on the car has also failed and needed to be replaced. The steering pump has also stopped working and needs to be replaced. The car was purchased in April 2008 and has had documented steering problems since. The dealership (koppel Nissan) has given me a hard time and Nissan has not addressed the issue. This steering problem causes the steering wheel to stop working and I have had several incidents were my children and I have been almost hit. This is a huge safety issue and the fact that the rack and pinion are on back order may indicate this is a wide spread problem. I have been told by mechanics to submit a lemon claim to the state of NY. I have inquired with both the dealership and manufacture with no success. I approaching the statute of limitation under the NY lemon law and fear that repairing the rack and pinion and steering pump will not resolve the problem and I will not be able to file a claim. With everything that is going on with Toyota I feel it is important to reach out to you so that you can alert others who may be having the same problem.

10 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 04/20/2009

While driving the car to a family function (20 miles, mixed highway and local) heard a slight noise followed by a sound like a tire going flat. Slowed to check tires, when noise stopped. Continued to destination without another occurrence. Car sat for approximately 2 hours, then we returned home, again mixed highway and local roads. No noises or indicator lights on dashboard. Upon exiting highway, heard a very loud bang from the front end, similar to driving through a deep pothole. There were no potholes on the highway ramp. Limped to home (approximately 1 mile from end of ramp), car was smoking and there was some noise from front end, but it could still be driven. Upon arriving home, saw that the car was leaking clear fluid from the front center-right of the vehicle. Had car flat bedded to local service shop for diagnosis and repair. Local service shop could not repair. Flat bedded to Nissan dealer. Nissan indicated that the front differential had failed, and Nissan is the only source for this part. Car has been driven 70,000 miles. Drive train warranty 60,000. Cost of repair $3,800. Car has been regularly maintained. Car has only been driven on highways and local roads. It is absolutely ridiculous for a major drive train component to fail catastrophically on a vehicle that is driven gently and well cared for.

11 Differential Unit problem of the 2003 Nissan Murano

Failure Date: 01/13/2005

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated the rear differential of the vehicle failed and oil was leaking into the engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that the rear differential was worn. The dealer also stated that the oil leak caused the pistons to become dry, which were destroyed. The dealer advised the contact that the pistons and the differential needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 46,015.
