36 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

April 2013 I was having issues with my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. It began shuddering upon acceleration. We contacted the local Nissan dealership and questioned them about any recall or any other service bulletins regarding transmission issues. I was told there were no recalls on my vehicle or any outstanding service bulletins in regards to this particular year and model. Since the vehicle had over 80,000 miles and was out of warranty and we would have to pay for repairs. April 30 it was found that the radiator assembly was leaking coolant into the transmission and needed replaced. The vehicle was fine for the first week after repair. On may 9 my vehicle was unable to go over 20 mph. It began shuddering and loosing power when accelerating from a standstill or at a low speed. At that point, I had to get out of the flow of traffic and get the car to a safe place along the roadway. Going back to the local repair shop they flushed the transmission fluid, changed the oil and put in new filters. About a week later when the engine was hot; it would continue to shudder upon acceleration, again they flushed the transmission and changed oil. It continued to have issues. On June 2 we took the vehicle to a local transmission place where we had the transmission replaced. At this time we were told about a class action lawsuit against Nissan for Nissan radiator/transmission cooler litigation, which alleges these vehicles contain a defect that permits cross-contamination of engine coolant and transmission fluid, ultimately causing the radiator and transmission to fail or need substantial repairs. The class action lawsuit further alleges that Nissan failed to disclose the alleged radiator defect to consumers despite knowing about it. You needed to file no later than June 7, 2013. Our issues occurred after the deadline. This issue has cost us over $5,000. 00.

37 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2013

Radiator failed causing transmission fluid to leak into radiator and vice versa (antifreeze into transmission). Car rumbles really bad and shifts hard. Had to replace radiator and flush transmission so about $600 for a problem that Nissan should fix.

38 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2013

Radiator fluid leaked into the transmission fluid causing the vehicle to have issues accelerating. This resulted in over $700 in car repairs.

39 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2013

Observed milky puddle under radiator and thick milkly pink fluid in radiator and overflow reservoir. Observed during the last 3000miles intermittent vibrations similar to hitting the "wake-up" strips on the side of a highway shoulder or washer-board road texture. Vibrations happened at various times between 1250 to 2250 rpm and 50 to 60mph. Tire balance was ruled out as a cause of vibration by mechanic. Dealer diagnosis verified cross contamination of the engine coolant and transmisson fluid caused by an internal transmission cooler in the radiator split apart. A mechanic described the damage that would be caused to the transmission from the cross contamination would include severe corrosion. Transmission failure is imminent because of the severe leakage. Transmission failure is also sudden, because the vehicle was operable even with the presence of a leak. Repair of this condition requires replacement of the radiator and transmission and flushing the coolant system. I would not want to replace a faulty radiator with the same, but our mechanic verified that the Nissan replacement radiator has been be changed from the original part number. Therefore, Nissan has revised their radiator but not issued a recall. Nissan dealer quotes for repair was $9983.

40 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2013

Driving on the highway last evening my transmission just blew out. The rpm's went high and I was thrown into first or second gear in an automatic vehicle. I had to weave to get off to the side of the road and out of traffic. It was a huge safety concern for me and my children. There was no warning. I have called Nissan this morning and I am being told there is nothing they can do. There are reports, class action law suits, and other complaints all over the internet on the exact issue (radiator fluid is leaking into transmission and causing it failure) and nothing is being addressed by Nissan. Does someone have to die before this is handled?? horrible business on their part. I know have a truck that should be worth $10,000-12,000 that has a $6,000 fix because of a factory defect and it is my problem?? this is unbelievable. . . .

41 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Suddenly my Pathfinder began to loss power while driving home . I barely made it home. The vehicle suddenly leaked out red transmission fluid in the driveway and began to smoke at the hood of the engine. The Pathfinder was towed to a Nissan dealer that same day. Nissan dealer reports the transmission and radiator needs to be replaced, costing approx 8000. 00 dollars.

42 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

2006 Nissan Pathfinder started having a violent vibration at around 50mph. Researched online and found numerous articles regarding this issue. All information I found indicated that the radiator fluid was leaking into the transmission through the coolent line. When I checked my radiator level, the coolent was low, which was one of the indicators that his was my problem. I took my vehicle to the dealership that I bought it from, less than a year ago with 75,000 miles, they tell me that the warrenty only covers vehicles with less that 80,000 miles. When I purchased the vehicle, there was no mention of the issue, only that the Pathfinder was a solid, certified pre-owned vihicle. Now I will have to pay $3,000 CO-pay. Everything I have read, indicates that these issues rarely ever start before 80,000 miles. The fact that the industry is letting them get away with this is disgusting to me. I have a wife and two children riding around in a faulty vehicle with a well known issue I can't aford to fix.

43 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

2006 Nissan Pathfinder 103k miles. We noticed vehicle would shudder upon acceleration at approximately 40 mph and again at 50 mph. Also at times the engine would rev up like it couldn't shift to the next gear. If we slowed down to 50 and re-accelerated to 55 mph, the shuddering became a severe vibration. We took it to an independent mechanic since we had recently a bad experience with our local Nissan dealer in fixing another problem (timing chain). The mechanic dropped the transmission pan and found the radiator was leaking coolant into the transmission fluid. Mechanic stated we were very lucky to have caught this right away as it could have caused a lot of other problems too lengthy to mention here. Mechanic replaced radiator and did a tranny flush but I'm not sure our problems are over. Now the fuel gauge registers empty after I have just filled up with fuel, the service engine light came on, and now I am totally stressed out driving anywhere, and especially in traffic.

44 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact radiator fluid leaked into the transmission causing the vehicle to stall. The contact pulled to the side of the road and shut of the vehicle. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle started to shake between 40 and 50 mph. The contact took the vehicle to a local for a diagnostic test. The test result shown a faulty code but could not identify the codes. The contact then took the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The test results shown a defective transmission that needed to be replaced. The dealer confirmed the radiator fluid leaked into the transmission and transmission fluid leaked into the radiator. Failure mileage was 89,000. Jo.

45 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2012

The 2006 Nissan Pathfinder has an issue with the radiator (coolant) leaking into the transmission. Truck began to shudder as if driving on rumble strips. Leaking fluid causes what first starts out as a rumble during shifting around 40 mph, then eventually leads to a seize of the transmission which can occur at any time. Should the transmission fail while in traffic it could cause a accident. The vehicle was taken to transmission shop and they advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. The failure and the current mileages were 103,800 miles.

46 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2012

I was driving my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder on a highway in light traffic at about 60 mph when I began to hear a high-pitched whine from the engine area. When I started to accelerate after stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle "bucked," or lurched forward, and began to shake. There was no one in front of me at the time; if another vehicle had been in my path, I would have slammed into it. I was able to exit the highway without incident and drive/coast to a safe place where I immediately called for a tow truck. The repair shop at the Nissan dealership informed me that the radiator fluid had leaked into the transmission and caused the transmission to fail. Nissan apparently knew about this problem but did not suggest that the potentially defective radiator be replaced before it led to transmission failure.

47 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2012

Transmission has completely failed due to leakage from the radiator crack. Rumbling started at about 130k miles, transmission starting slipping several weeks ago. We took it into the shop and paid $300 for a complete flush and replacement of fluid. It did no good - transmission is now not working at all.

48 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2012

Vehicle engine started skipping while in motion, engine temperature went up to overheated and speed automatically reduced itself to no more than 35mph on the road, caused traffic to avoid vehicle from hitting in the rear end. Had to drive small roads to get home. Nissan service fixed coolant pump but we found out later this was not the issue as less than 6 months later the engine overheated again, only this time the radiator leaked coolant into the transmission fluid and ruined the entire transmission. We find out that Nissan has hundreds or thousands of such incidents and have not issued a recall. Our cost to repair is $8,700 for a 6 year old vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it.

The approximate failure mileage was 71,867. The VIN was not available. Updated11/29/11 updated 12/14/11.

53 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

My son's Pathfinder's transmission just died at 86,000 miles. He bought the truck used and has only owned it for 4 months. There is a known problem with the radiator leaking and mixing with the transmission fluid, and the rest is history. We have seen numerous complaints online referring to this very problem. Just want to file a complaint if there should ever be a recall on this vehicle. We contacted both the dealer and the manufacturer, with no satisfaction at all.

56 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

Brief description of what happened. . I purchased a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder, local trade at a dealership. After I purchased the vehicle some days later I started to notice the vehicle shifted very hard, started more frequently as the vehicle was on the road longer. . Felt like it slammed into each gear!!! I was driving across a bridge one morning and its a 2 lane bridge and all of a sudden my rpms redline and feels like im in 3rd gear, all the cars behind swerve into the next like cause I was go the speed limit then the car drops down very rapidly in speed. I tried to accelerate but the vehicle just started to shake a little and the rpms just redlined. I get it to a local shop, come to find out that the radiator fluid leaked into the transmission and messed everything up. . All in all the shop tells me the radiator and transmission is shot and needs to be replaced. And my total bill would be close to $4,000 dollars. . . Very disappointed in Nissan!!! lost all faith and will stick to Honda from now on!!!!!.

57 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

Transmission stutter during acceleration due to radiator fluid leaking into transmission. Fuel gauge gives false readings at all times to the actual amount of fuel in tank due to faulty sending unit.

58 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle violently jerked into gear. The check engine light also began to illuminate on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the radiator fluid was leaking into the transmission fluid, causing the failure. The contact was also advised to replace the transmission. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who recommended the same repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 98,000.

59 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2011

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph approaching a traffic stop signal and when driving from the complete stop the transmission began to hesitate in a jerking motion. In addition, a significant amount of steam emitted from the radiator and the thermostat increased rapidly to hot which resulted to the engine overheating. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and towed to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The technician detected the radiator exhibited a crack and the entire fluid leaked into the transmission which caused extensive damages. The transmission was completely destroyed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The failure mileage was 86,000. The VIN was unavailable. Js.

60 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2010

Vehicle (2006 Nissan Pathfinder) going approximately 55mph on interstate began to experience problems after being switched into four-wheel drive. When attempting to switch out of 4 wheel drive the vehicle would not switch back to 2x2. After parking, turning off the vehicle and turning back up, upon switching in to reverse the car thumped and switched, the impact of the thumb caused the vehicle to accelerated in reverse at higher than controllable speed, thus causing the vehicle to crash in the objects behind. The vehicle was towed into an auto dealer. After inspection is was discovered that the coolant tube had leaked, causing transmission/radiator fluid to leak. I was informed that if the complications from the leakage have occurred earlier, it was more than likely, highly feasible, that I would have lost control of the vehicle. The combination of the inability to get the 4x4 to lock and change, along with the transmission problems, compounded by the recent engine problems (which I was just informed of) could have been fatal, not just for all passengers in my vehicle, but all those around me on the interstate. Nissan needs to have a complete recall of all of these transmissions.

61 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

While doing regular vehicle maintenance on my vehicle, found coolant had leaked into my transmission fluid. As a result of finding this problem, and not having the financial resources to fix it at the time, I stopped driving the vehicle on a consistent basis for around 18 months. I did the best I could to fix it by bypassing the defective transmission cooler under the radiator and flushing the transmission of contaminated fluid. Since discovering this problem I have driven approximately 6,000 miles, and now the transmission is slipping badly and when it shifts, the transmission shifts very hard. As a result of this transmission cooler failure I am now looking at being forced to replace my transmission.

62 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2010

I own a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder, radiator fluid leaked from radiator into transmission according to transmission specialist. Leaking fluid causes what first starts out as a rumble during shifting around 40 mph, then eventually leads to a seize of the transmission which can occur at any time. I am afraid to drive the vehicle until issues can be resolved. This leak has ruined my transmission requiring a new transmission/radiator which adds up to a price of around 5-8000 dollars. This vehicle has been serviced regularly and only has 70,000 miles. I believe this to be a serious safety concern Nissan is trying to hide from the consumer and should be addressed ASAP.
