Six problems related to transmission stuck in gear have been reported for the 2013 Nissan Sentra. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2013 Nissan Sentra based on all problems reported for the 2013 Sentra.
When the car is stopped and in "park" (the engine may be running or off and you go to start it up), the car will not come out of "park". This happens randomly. To get the car out of "park", per the owner's manual, there is an inset half-circle (8mm) plastic piece labeled "shift lock" next to the shifter that has to be pried off with an appropriately sized tool and then an appropriately sized tool has to be inserted into the slot and pressed down while the shifter is simultaneously moved out of "park" (note: you need to use both hands to accomplish this plus obtain the necessary tools). This happens when the car is stopped and in "park" - while waiting to pick someone up, stopping to drop someone off, in a traffic jam; at a safety check on a highway, parked in a lot, parked in a garage, etc. This problem of the shifter stuck in "park" only happens when the car is not in motion and the transmission has been placed in the "park" position - the engine can be either on or off and you go to start the car.
The car accelerates slower. On eco mode, the car gets stuck on a gear; sometimes it will get stuck on the second or third gear. For example, today it revved up to 5000 rpm as I was merging onto the freeway and I had to pull over because it was stuck on gear 3.
Transmission is not working properly, slipping, getting stuck in low gear with out shifting, almost caused several accidents driving as car will not keep up speed, will not pull out in intersections etc. . .
Our 2013 Nissan Sentra with 112k miles, the transmission has started to shutter when shifting on city streets, gets stuck in second gear when pulling onto highways on ramps, and slips when at highway speeds with and without cruise control. This vehicle saved my wife's life while being our only transportation. She has survived 5 cancers but now we don't have reliable transportation. I can't get the vehicle to the dealer to have the two recalls performed on the airbags and anti-lock brake system.
On multiple occasions while driving on streets and highways, the vehicle seems to be stuck on a lower gear or not transitioning to a higher gear. The most noticeable issue is related to the rpm's getting extremely high with little or no increase in overall speed. The most recent incident occurred while on the freeway, as I was attempting to increase my speed the vehicle slowly accelerated up to 45 - 50 mph but the rpm's reflected 6,500+ before the vehicle would start to jerk at this point I had no choice but to move towards the emergency lane/shoulder fearing that it would abruptly stop working or lose momentum. This instance happened on two occasions during this drive while on the freeway and it seemed to stop after the second time I pulled over but only after I cycled through the park/neutral/reverse/drive/low gears a few times. Based on this second instance, I feel this issue is related to the transmission for the vehicle.
