The contact owns a 2019 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that while the granddaughter was driving approximately at 30 mph, she was stopped by the police due to the taillights not functioning. The contact took the vehicle to a local auto parts store and had a fuse replaced. When she reached her destination and turned off the vehicle, the instrument panel warning lights and headlights activated; additionally, the battery was drained. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness had a "thermal breakdown" and confirmed that several wires were burnt. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The contact then received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21v135000 (exterior lighting) after experiencing the failure. 4 Brake Light problem of the 2014 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 08/07/2017

Condensation inside drivers side taillight. This caused brake lights to be on continuously when headlights were on. It also greatly reduced throttle response. Vehicle never had any incident that would have caused condensation, no visible crack. Dealer replaced light assembly and said they have seen a few of these.

5 Brake Light problem of the 1996 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 01/30/2008

Insufficient headrest foam coverage. Foam degrades or self moves out of position to reveal internal metal frame which runs across entire headrest at point of head impact. Part does not seem serviceable for repair, and should be replaced by manufacturer with updated version. Check engine light and airbag light are both triggered too easily by too many sensors, so vehicle is constantly in shop with no trouble found. Seems like it was designed by an overly-worried car manufacturer, or for the purposes of making owners feel the car needs to be replaced. It also greatly increases the likely hood of failing an annual inspection. The safety issue stems from all the blinking lights on the dash which are very distractive, especially at night, and usually completely unnecessary. In 1996, there was a recall for insufficient brake light illumination on the Sentra model. Nissan's fix for this was a brighter bulb. Since my car was bought used, and the prior owner did not upgrade to the new bulbs, and there is no listing for the replacement bulbs, owner's may not know how to upgrade their brake lights. Nissan dealers do not seem to know what bulb to replace it with for better illumination. This is an obvious safety issue, as there are many 1996 Nissan Sentras on the road today.

6 Brake Light problem of the 2002 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 05/14/2003

I own a 2002 Sentra spec v and this is my second one in 10 months that has failed to perform as it should. The current vehicle has had 1 new engine, 1 exhaust manifold, 2 window regulators, 2 new windows, three new door speakers, two shift knobs, 1 timing belt tensioner, 1 third brake light, and is in the process of getting it's third engine. Car consumes oil at a rapid rate of 2 quarts per 1200 miles. Tried an informal resolution and Nissan rejected. Dealer agrees the car should be bought back. Symptoms that I have, lead to possible engine fire and is being addressed with a recall. I was sent home in a vehicle that was unsafe and they did not want to fix this last time and were denying the car had any problem. I fought a long hard battle just to get it fixed.

7 Brake Light problem of the 1997 Nissan Sentra

My neighbor told me my brake lights had been out for awhile -- when the headlights were on and I hit the brake pedal, the brake light/rear tail light would go out completely, leaving only the center light bar on the trunk on to serve as a brake light. I'd been driving with my lights on during the day, thinking it would be safer since I have a toddler in the car with me. The dealership fixed the problem ($285) and told me, although they didn't write it on the invoice, that it looked like "somebody" had wired the brake lights wrong in a section between the trunk side and the frame and they were getting hot. I have never had any other work done on the lights and said so, but got no response. I had taken the car to autozone the day before, to see if the bulbs were the problem. The manager there came out to look at the bulbs and showed me where the driver-side brake light socket had started to melt. So it was a fire hazard as well.
