2 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2017

The brake light in my vehicle came on while I was driving home on the highway 235 (MD) road. When I applied the brakes it made what seems to be grinding noise. The brakes went soft luckily the I was near a shoulder and avoided a near rear end with another vehicle. I was close to a gas station. I pulled into the gas station with the grinding noise. I went outside to see if there were an brake leaks or any brake issues and noticed nothing. I turned on the truck and the brake light was gone and the brakes were normal. I took the truck to my dealer and sheehy Nissan stated it was the power brake vacuum booster. Nissan dealer stated they had a notice on this issue. Due to safety concerns. I had it fixed - well $1,428. 45 later. The sad part - this truck only has 15647 miles and lightly used. Seems that there are similar issues with the brakes on Nissan Titans on the NHTSA website. Invoice of the services performed are uploaded. Did remove personal information per instructions on the NHTSA website.

3 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

Brake pedal goes to the floor unexpentently; intermittent condition;; while driving any speed and depressing on brakes; pedal will go to the floor; red brake light comes on; makes grinding noise when problem occurs; shut off key and restart; light goes out and brake pedal resumes normal position and noise goes away.

4 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

On the way to work with heavy traffic, I lightly applied brakes to slow down, I felt loud grinding and shaking and brake light came on. Tried to stop the car and pressed brake pedal but it was pushed down all the way to the floor. Pumped pedal numerous times , it stopped. The speed was about 15 mph when it occurred and I was able to stop the car. Shut off the engine and restarted the engine, it looked everything turned out to be normal, acts like nothing happened. Called Nissan company, but they did not have any recall on this issue. I goggled it and found out many people having the same issue but Nissan company did not do anything on this. This is very dangerous. If I was driving with high speed, I could run into other car since brake not working momentarily.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2015

Pulled out of the gas station by our house and all of a sudden my brake light came on and a weird noise would sound anytime I would tap my brakes . Pulled over restarted the car and everything was fine again and still is !.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2015

Brake light came on when brakes were applied. Pedal was soft and made a grinding noise. Brakes worked but not very well. Took a video of it with my cell phone. This has happened multiple times. I took it in to the dealer several years ago and they reset something. They said it may or may not fix the problem. It didn't. They said the repair would cost $900. 00. I think it should be free. This is a potential hazard. Turning truck off and on fixes the problem but not permanently.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2015

The abs light, vdc light, slip light and brake light illuminated and the brake pedal went to the floor accompanied by abs actuator sounds. The braking effort did not slow the vehicle effectively. Recycling the ignition switch returned the brakes to a satisfactory condition. After my wife drove the vehicle home, I scanned the abs for fault codes: c1179. I am an ase certified master automobile technician with 28 years of experience. This device measures the travel of the brake booster and is a necessary component of a vehicle with stability control (Nissan calls it vehicle dynamic control [vdc]). This vehicle has done this 4 times in the ten years that I've owned it. The frequency of failure is very random, duplication of the fault is extremely difficult and it occurs without any warning at all.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

Brake pedal became mushy. Brake light and abs light came on. Coasted to a stop, turned vehicle off and restarted. Lights went off and brakes worked properly again. This is approximately the sixth time this has happened in this truck. Brake pads and rotors are new. It first began happening approximately six months ago. This is dangerous and Nissan should have recalled this vehicle due to this issue, which they have been aware of since 2004.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while traveling approximately 30 mph, the brake light sensor illuminated and upon pressing the brake pedal it sank to the floor. The contact had to apply force to ensure the vehicle stopped. The contact was able to turn off and restart the vehicle which reset the computer and the sensor. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who diagnosed that the anti-lock brake system needed to be reset. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the master cylinder needed to be replaced and that the abs actuator was making the loud noise but it was unclear if it needed to be replaced at the moment. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v072000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

My 2004 Nissan Titan has had numerous instances of the brake warning light coming on while driving at different speeds. When this happens, the pedal goes to the floor and the brakes make a loud grindind sound. Several times I have had to go onto the shoulder of the road to avoid rear ending the vehicle in front of me. Once I get the vehicle stopped I can turn the engine off and the brakes reset and work correctly. However, these incidents are occuring more frequently now and sometimes I have to restart the engine several times to get the reset. This is a very critical safety flaw and I have read many other Titan owners having the same problem. Nissan needs to recall these trucks and fix the problem before there is a serious injury or a fatality. I bought this truck new and it has been serviced at proper intervals.

13 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that the brakes stopped functioning while driving 65-70 mph. The contact was able to regain control after the vehicle was pulled to the side of the road and moved 900 yards. Also, the brake light warning indicator was illuminated. Once the vehicle was restarted, it operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vcu chip and the vacuum canister malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred twice. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2014

I have been experiencing a brake / abs problem with my 2004 Nissan Titan. On several occasions as I was driving, the brake light would come on and as I attempted to push the brakes under normal braking conditions, I have almost not been able to stop the truck in time. It felt as though the abs system is activating and brake pedal is fluctuating, vibrating and grinding. I brought it to the dealership on 7/17/14 they said it was a programming issue. I paid about $100 for them to upload a new program. They told me the new program didn't take and then told me the delta sensor in the brake booster was most likely the issue. But unfortunately the the entire brake booster assembly must be purchased since they don't sell the delta sensor separately, and the cost is $950 to replace. I called and filed a complaint with Nissan consumer affairs the next day 7/18/14. Today 7/24/14, I finally received a call back from Nissan consumer affairs letting me know that they were unwilling to help me with this problem. I was told that because it¿s out of warranty, Nissan north America will not pursue any further action in regards to my case & considered the matter closed.

15 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2014

When applying brakes with out a warning ,brakes made a spring popping noise and total brake pressure loss, brake light came on ,after pulling over and checking for oil leaks or loose parts nothing was found when re starting vehicle brake light reset and brakes work normal.

16 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

While taking a exit ramp at approximately 45 mph brake light came on and when the brakes were applied due to stopping traffic pedal went to the floor with a grinding sound. I had to swerve to the right to avoid the car in front of me and went past 2 cars before stopping in the emergency lane. I turned the engine off and when I restarted the light was gone. Reported this to the Nissan dealer . . . . They stated they have never heard of it before. . . . . There are hundreds of reports on the internet and also filed with NHTSA. According to the dealer they will do nothing until a recall. I certainly hope no one dies from this as the class action lawsuit that will follow will be very embarrassing to NHTSA, dot, and Nissan as you have all been made very aware of this. . . .

17 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2013

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan titian. The contact stated that the brake warning light illuminated when the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle would not stop. The contact would shut off the engine and once restarted, the vehicle would resume normally. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, who performed a diagnostic but was unable to generate a failure code. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle would need to be diagnosed before any repairs would be performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000.

18 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2012

While driving the slip, vdc and brake lights all illuminated on the dash. I stepped on the brakes and the brakes went almost to the floor. The truck eventually did stop but I came close to hitting the vehicle in front of me. I have read and researched thoroughly about this issue and it is well documented that this is a known issue. There is currently a class action lawsuit in California regarding this issue. This has happened to me approximately 4 times over the past year where I have almost completely lost my brakes. Nissan needs to make this right. I believe the problem may be a delta stroke sensor that is housed within the brake booster. I have not replace this yet as I am not sure if this will fix the problem and it is quite expensive. This is very unsafe and there are many complaints regarding this issue out there.

19 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2012

When driving down a residential road, the brake light illuminated for no apparent reason. Then, when slowing to turn, brakes shuddered violently and did not feel as if they would succeed in stopping the vehicle. I slowed enough to turn, then proceeded slowly to make 2 more immediate turns before reaching my house. The brakes shuddered and were not 100% effective each time the pedal was pressed. Fluid levels are normal, brake components look good. After turning truck off and back on, problem was not able to be replicated. However, after doing online research, this appears to be a known issue that the manufacturer has as yet refused to address, even though it could lead to collisions and fatalities.

20 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact was driving 45 mph when the brake warning light illuminated. The contact abnormally depressed the brake pedal into the floorboard but the vehicle failed to respond. The anti-lock braking system also activated erroneously but was the only functioning brake system on the vehicle at the time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact that the computer needed to be reset. The computer was reset however failure recurred three weeks later. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and offered to assistance with the contact with the cost of the computer reset. The current and the failure mileage was 106,771.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

Leaving work at 5:00 pm. Started truck and got to stop sign everything was fine. Turned left onto major street and when approaching first stop light brake peddle went almost to floor. It felt really spongy and made a grinding noise. Had to run up on curb to avoid going into intersection. Car did come to a stop and I noticed brake light was on. I turned truck off and started again. Brakes were back. Did a search for this description of failure and found several threads with tons of trucks having the same issue. It seems to be a bad delta sensor. Nissan knows about this but does nothing. Hopefully it doesn't take a serious accident for them to do something about it. Just search for Nissan Titan delta sensor and you will see all the vehicles with problems. I was referred to this site by Nissan. They said they couldn't do anything until they were told to by NHTSA.

22 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2010

Brakes minimally effective without prior brake light indicating a problem. Brake pedal chattered. Noise produced associated with chatter from engine compartment. Brake light illuminated after problem started.

23 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Just driving down the road the brake light comes on in the dash and the brake pedal goes to floor. You have very little brakes and it makes a grinding noise. If you turn off the vehicle it goes away. It has happened three times in the last year or so. Im taking it to a Nissan dealer next week and they say its going to cost me 100 dollars to reprogram the computer. I have read hundreds of reports of other people having the same problem. If its that big of a problem shouldn't there be a recall on this and Nissan have to pay for it?.

24 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

While driving applied brakes , brake pedal went to floor and metal to metal sound heard in front end brakes, I stopped noticed brake warning light on . I turned vehicle off and restarted . The brake warning light went off and brake pedal went to working normal . This situation has happened at least 5 times in the last month. There have been numerous reports involving this same situation and it should be addressed by Nissan before someone is injured are killed. I have made appointment with Nissan dealer. Vehicle mileage is 40,000.

25 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

Upon start up parking brake light on dash illuminated and remained on, however the parking brake was not set. Once the vehicle was in motion the brakes became ineffective. The pedal was soft and there was a pulsing sensation. If I had not been going less than 5mph I am unsure if I could have stopped, I was able to coast to a stop and place the vehicle in park. Once the vehicle was turned off and restarted all lights and problems disappeared and brakes functioned ok. I took the vehicle to the local dealer and they located a problem with the brake booster and/or master cylinder.

26 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

I have a 2004 Nissan Titan king cab. I have on a number of occasions had major brake related issues. You are probably well aware that the Titan had some initial problems with their brakes in the early models that were solved. However, the dealer has failed to solve more serious problems I and many others have had. In random situations, applying the brakes lightly and normally, the brakes basically fail to operate normally and when the pedal is depressed it offers none of the normal resistance and instead easily goes straight to the floor, emmediately this locks the brakes and causes the truck to come to a rapid and immediate lurching and sliding stop. So far, most times, I have be able to feel a subtle change in the pedal in time to change how I apply the brakes, but a few times I have been slammed against the seat belt and nearly hit my face on the steering wheel. Often the problem is immeduately preceded by a small sound that sounds like a spring coming undone. ( I know this may sound a bit rediculous, but it sounds like the sound a spring would make in a cartoon. . . "boing"). Every time this happens the breaks will remain in the same state, mushy and causing an immediate lock up until I stop and turn the engine off and back on again. The brake light comes on when this happens and goes off after turning off the ignition. Everything will be normal after restarting and the problem often won't reseurface for weeks or months. It happens to me about every 45-60 days and I can not reproduce it. When this first happend I took it to my dealer and they said they fixed it, but they did not. I found numerous reports of this problem online so this is real and not an isolated case. . Read more...

27 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2009

The most recent occurrence occurred yesterday 11/1/09 as I pulled out of a parking lot and put on my brakes and the brakes began to shudder and a spring like noise occurred. In addition the brakes were soft and scraping sound occurred when applied. This occurred each time I applied the brakes for the next 4miles until I arrived home. The brake light remained on the entire time until I arrived home. I called the dealer and made an appointment for today, Monday. Late Saturday, I had to move my vehicle at home and noticed the brake light was off and the brakes worked normally without any sound or softness. The same thing happened about two years ago. At that time I drove the vehicle to the dealer and left the vehicle with the dealer overnight because it was late in the day near closing. . The next day the dealer said they took the vehicle for a test drive and it reacted normally and "it probably was some dirt/dust in and around the brakes causing the brakes to stick'. . There was no work done on the vehicle. Today, the same dealer looked at my vehicle and ran some tests after I insisted this is the second time the same thing has occurred. This time the dealer found a defective/worn delta speed sensor and recommended to replace the brake booster. They said it is not covered under warranty as the warranty expired 1/1/09.

28 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

Brakes go into in abs mode for no reason, truck becomes hard to stop; road conditions were dry- 80 degrees and sunny. I was coming home from the Nissan dealer because of a brake, slip, vdc light (anytime) and brake light - abs coming on (only during braking), both are intermittent. The Friday before I had Nissan look at this very condition(s) they agreed I had a problem, and upgraded the software. 2 days later the light still came on and stayed on. The only difference was after shutting down the truck and restarting, the lights would stay on, something that did not use to happen. . . Nissan has a brake issue, I've seen many of complaints that are the same as mine- loss of braking because the abs kicks on (brake light comes on when this happens) and will not correct/stop it-self until the engine is shut down and restarted. Restarting the truck when the abs is hampering the stopping ability is not very practical, and very dangerous in most driving conditions. When this happened to me I came very close to hitting the car in front and swerved to the edge of the road. Since the 2nd visit to Nissan I had the master cylinder with stability control option replaced, that was the dealership recommendation after they downloaded the codes(x2), they stated the part had to be ordered. Cost for repair was quoted at $650. 00.

29 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

Problem started gradually as occasional noises, such as "clunking" and rattling, from the wheels while driving. Took vehicle in to dealer who could not find the problem. One day later while driving, heard awful grating noise from wheels and abs/vdc light came on. Took vehicle to dealer who stated that the emergency brake pad broke loose and destroyed the rotor, the abs sensor, etc. ($1,200 in damage). During the two weeks after service, the brake light has illuminated about 3 or 4 times. When the light is on, the brakes react as if in abs mode and grip and grind while stopping. Turning off the vehicle usually makes the light go off and the brakes then operate normally. The vehicle is currently back at the dealer, who stated they do not know what is wrong as they have not been able to re-create the problem.

30 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2008

Brakes on 2004 Nissan Titan failed while stopping at traffic light. Just prior to failure, brake light lit up on dashboard. Nissan dealer informed me that the brakes themselves were fine but that the computer that controls the brakes "lost its programming. " I was also informed that I am the 3rd customer in 6 months to have this event occur to them. To fix the problem, the dealer must "reprogram the vdc system. " dealer was unable to tell me why this happened or assure me that the brake failure will not reoccur. I was told that this is a known issue and Nissan has issued a service bulletin regarding this problem. This problem could have led to a catastropic accident had the brakes failed during a critical time. I am concerned that Nissan has a known brake problem, but there is no safety recall in place.

31 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2008

I have a Nissan Titan 2004 that I had for 3 years. The first couple of months everything was fine, but then my brakes would make this weird sound when I pressed the gas and the brake light would come on. I could not hit the brakes all the way because it would feel like if they were lock. . I had to stop in the middle of the road and turn off the truck and turn on again ,and the problem would fix it self. After a couple of times that it kept doing that , I decided to take to the dealer and they told me that the sensor light needed to be rested and that the problem should be solve. A couple amonths later it's started driving it again. It would maybe happens every other month . I used to always take the truck to get my oil change at the Nissan dealer shop and since the dos courtesy check they told me that my cv axles needed some work done because something was wrong with them. Of course they wanted to charge me a lot, so I had to say no. Now I have a truck that needs to have work done and very expensive. Now I can see oil leakage at the wheel bearing. My truck did not passed inspection this year because of that problem, so register my truck at another city and it passed cuz they were not checking those things. I have heard and read couple of the same issues that people are having with the back cv axle seals and bearings. Why would I be spending money on something that I would least expected. I would like to see if this issue be investigated. I got 2 kids under the age of 3 and I'm very concern on their safety. If Nissan is responsible for this , they need to take action immediately.

32 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph he applied the brakes and the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The brakes started to pulsate. The contact drove onto the emergency lane and shut the vehicle off. After restarting the vehicle, the failure did not recur. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the diagnostic test indicated that the front brakes were worn out. The dealer replaced the front brakes and one week later the brakes started to pulsate while driving 30 mph. The dealer informed the contact to bring the vehicle back if the failure persist. The contact was concerned about the safety risk while driving when the brakes are pulsating. The contact called the manufacturer to file a complaint and the manufacturer refused to take the complaint. The contact stated that the sensor may have caused the brakes to malfunction. The failure mileage was 72,000. Updated 11/11/10 the consumer stated when he applied the brake pedal, it began to pulsate as if the anti-lock brake system engaged and then the brake light illuminated. Updated 11/18/jb.

33 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal automatically touches the floor and a grinding noise is audible. The failure occurs at any speed. The brake warning light illuminates and the vehicle comes to a jerky stop. The dealer duplicated the failure, but could not determine the cause. The current and failure mileages were 32,998.

34 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2007

Post that I submitted to Nissan: my Nissan 2004 Titan crew cab had a very scary brake problem today. I lost most or all of the braking capability in the truck. It had a clunking noise when trying to apply brakes. The brake light was on. I stopped the car. Ck'ed fluids (all ok) and restarted. Problem went away after restart. Pretty certain the dealer will not find a problem, they rarely do until it is completely broken. I have 51k miles and several brake problems. First: is this covered by my 60k mile power train wrnty and is there a fix? I have left it at the dealer today but I need to know where the manufacturer stands (in writing or a reply to this email). Second, since this is such a severe safety issue we will assume that no reply to this email within 24hrs means the car is ok from the manufacturer point of view and no issues known to the manufacturer exists that deal with brakes or brake failure. The d&t of this submission is 3:30 pm Feb 25th 2007. Cc of this submission has bee sent to the cpsc and the NHTSA. Tks for your prompt attention. Joe.
