1 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

The fuel sending unit is bad on my 2005 Nissan Xterra it is throwing a p0463 code and after some research I found it an apparent problem in most 2nd generation Xterra's and frontiers. The problem is that the fuel sending unit tells the gauge how much gas is in the tank and since it is now working the gauge is not reading the proper amount of gas which can lead to a accident when the vehicle runs out of fuel.

2 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2010

2005 Nissan Xterra se, fuel sending unit is erratic and doesn't read proper amount of fuel in tank. This could be a serious safety concern for anyone who actually uses their truck out in the desert thinking they have more fuel then is indicated. Quite often the gauge will drop down to empty and I've gone to fill the truck up just in case and end up putting only a few gallons of fuel in the truck. This has happened multiple times, although its not a safety concern I do believe that the gauge showing the tank is at 3/4 or more then dropping down to 1/4 tank (the actual amount of fuel) is one. My biggest complaint is that Nissan has issued a recall for models earlier then the 2005 and the models from 2006 forward. Why is it that these models get the recall and not the 2005 models? the component that is failing in both the earlier and later models is the exact same part.

3 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2010

Filled up gas tank & check engine light came on. Autozone did a diagnostic & found po463. My wife has noticed erratic fuel-gauge operation for some time, but only mentioned it since the check-engine light came on. She has also noticed the mileage displayed has not agreed with the displayed fuel-level, which she thought something had happened that changed her gas mileage. . . Which had not. We drive this vehicle mainly on the freeway, as my wife is a college student in the rn program. In our location, she drives along with may semi-trucks going to/from canada. Having our vehicle run out of gas on this freeway, with the amount of trucks per hr could be devastating, if attempting to get to a shoulder safely. We have owned this vehicle since new. This is unacceptable that we must rely on faulty factory instrumentation. Other years have this same defect & have been recalled. Are we waiting for the death toll to increase before acting on something that is such an obvious problem that can fail & cause the vehicle to stall at highway speeds? this is an obvious problem that requires recall & repair.

4 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2010

In the past month I have experienced a series of anomalies with my fuel gauge. I initially noticed this when I completely refilled my gas tank only to notice that the gauge showed 7/8ths full. It seemed odd, but I didn't think it was an issue as the pump may have automatically shut off prematurely. Turns out to not be the case. On my next trip to the gas station, upon refilling the gas tank, my gauge only read a half tank. Upon my next trip in the vehicle, the gauge read properly. However, subsequent trips the gauge read sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. For example, after going 78 miles the gauge still read "full", and then after going 96 miles the gauge read "half full". After refilling the gas tank this last time, the gauge read 3/4 of a tank. The next trip the gauge read "full". Subsequent trips the gauge reads sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. The last couple of trips the gauge showed the same amount each time even though I have driven more than 60 miles. I took my vehicle to the nearest Nissan dealer (where I've had service performed before) to check for a recall as I had heard there were vehicles with this same issue. Apparently, Nissan has issued the recall for "some" models and years but not for mine. They offered to "diagnose" the problem, for their usual shop fee naturally. You should be aware that this issue is not limited to the model years allowed in the recall. I have been reading on online forum with many 2005 Xterras that are experiencing this same issue. I am less than pleased with the response from the dealership. I should not have to pay to diagnose a known problem; much less pay to have it fixed. I am issuing this complaint in hopes that you will do the right thing and realize the extent of this problem and include the 2005 model year in the existing recall.

5 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

Erratic function of dash fuel level gauge, gauge may go from one half tank to "below empty" and warning light comes on without warning. Check engine dash warning light also comes on and stays on, if codes are checked, only code stored is "fuel sending unit-low voltage". Minutes later gauge may return to what appears to be normal function, but check engine light stays on. Gauge cannot be trust to display fuel level accurately and may result in a traffic crash if vehicle looses power while in operation. This issue has been documented by numerous 2005 Nissan Xterra owners but Nissan chooses to ignore the safety issue and refuses to recall the defective fuel sending unit.

6 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

My 2005 Nissan Xterra has a fuel gauge problem which causes the gauge to not display the correct amount of fuel in the tank. It can show empty after a fill up. It is impossible to know how much fuel is in the tank. This could cause me to run out of gas wile operating the vehicle which could lead to a crash.

7 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

My 2005 Xterra gas gage goes to empty and will not show true amount in tank. This has been happening for about 1 month. Also the check engine stays on and I know it is from the fill valve from the gas tank. I had one replaced already about 1 year ago and the problem is back. This is a re occurring problem that has been continuing for the last 2 months. Also the latch for the rear hatch some times will lock and not open I also replaced this about 1 year ago and the problem continues.

8 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

I drive a 2005 Nissan Xterra and have 27,100 miles on it. When the car hit 26,000 miles, the "service engine soon" light came on. I had the car looked at by my mechanic and he said that there was a defect in the fuel sensor line which doesn't register the amount of gas being used. The gas gauge is extremely erratic and I don't know how much gas I have. I've been stuck a couple times because the car ran out of gas and the fuel gauge said that I had half a tank. This is a dangerous issue because there are usually passengers in the vehicle (small children) and to have to pull a car over on a highway because it ran out of gas is quite a problem, especially if I have to lug children out of the car and walk the highway looking for a gas station. I've read online where numerous people have complained about the exact same issue. Why would something like this not be recalled? how may people have to die or become seriously injured before something is recalled? please, please look at this issue and hopefully resolve before someone's life is either ended because of death or injury. Thank you.

9 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Fuel sending unit malfunction after 40,000 miles, so fuel gauge does not register the correct amount of fuel in the fuel tank. Regular maintenance performed since vehicle was acquired new in 2005. Gauge will take approximately 30 minutes to register full after fill-up and then almost immediately drop back to 3/4 or slightly below and remain there. I have found numerous threads on this issue in various online forums from owners of 2005 and later Xterra suvs and frontier pick up trucks. All state that Nissan will not replace the defective part over 36,000 miles and the repair is listed at $600 or more after the original warranty expires. Nissan has issued a TSB and is aware that the part is defective, but refuses to conduct a recall, even though this seems to be a very common problem. I live in the western united states and, by necessity, have to travel fairly long distances to get to "civilization". Due to this fact, I think it is pretty important and consider it a safety issue that I know how much gas I have in the tank, especially since winter is just a few weeks away and the weather here can be quite severe during that time. I also have a second, 2006 model Xterra that is approaching 40,000 miles, which I'm sure will have the same problem with at some point in the next few months.

10 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Fuel gauge shows incorrect fuel amount in tank. The tank will show more than a quarter of a tank and then all of a sudden drop to dead empty and the low fuel light will come on. This also triggers the trip computer to read '---' for the dte (distance to empty) reading. This is a common problem that Nissan has issued a technical service bulletin on (ntb07-069b).

11 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

2005 Nissan Xterra fuel gauge slowly shows the amount of fuel in the car (approximately an hour after filling up the tank). From many forums the problems is obvious and there is a need for a recall by Nissan. The fuel sending unit in the vehicle is defective on all Nissan Xterra's platform (including frontier & pathfinder) after 40k miles on the car. The cost of such repair by dealers amounts to $600 dollars for parts and labor.

12 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2008

2005 Nissan Xterra - service engine soon light comes on, then fuel gauge drops to zero. Light goes on and off apparently in relation to amount of gas in the tank. Searched "service engine soon gas gauge" and top of the list were dozens of Nissan owners' complaints about the very same problem.
