93 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 2005 Nissan Xterra. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Nissan Xterra based on all problems reported for the 2005 Xterra.

1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

The gas gauge goes from half full to empty and light comes on when the car is in idle. The gauge does not re-set until the tank is filled and drives for about 100 miles. I believe it is an issue with the sending unit. Is there are re-call?.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. After driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. I went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. After returning home and doing research, I went online to x. Nissanhelp. Com after performing a search, I came across many others who have experienced the same problem. Apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. A similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 Xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. It seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. There is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. If this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 Xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600. ".

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2012

The fuel level indicator is very unreliable. Sometimes it reads full and other times it won't move from empty even though there's fuel in the tank. After doing some internet research on this problem I found that it's very common in the 2005 Xterras! why hasn't there been a recall on the faulty sensor?.

4 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

Cost of repair ranges from $300-600.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2011

Error code p0463 - apparently due to a malfunctioning fuel level sensor and requiring substantial shop time to drop fuel tank and replace sensor/pump unit (not to mention part cost, which is not being supplied by manufacturer despite the known, widespread flaw).

6 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2011

Dte (distance to empty) indication flashes "---". Vehicle "service engine soon" light illuminated. Code po463, fuel level sensor a circuit input high is stored in memory. According to internet searches and circuit diagram, believed to be fuel level sensor (in-tank).

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

"I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. 8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

The owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the fuel sending unit failed. The fuel gauge would read empty whenever the fuel tank was filled with gasoline. The vehicle was taken to the dealer after routine maintenance and the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 108,000.

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

2005 Nissan Xterra having gas gauge / service engine light issue. Po463 is the code which means the fuel sender/sensing unit is bad. This is clearly a faulty part issue on Nissan and there should be a recall. There are too many people having this same issue with their 2005 - 2007 Xterras, pathfinders, & frontiers. This is a hazard not knowing how much fuel is in your tank and it is a ridiculous to have to pay $600 to get this fixed when it is a faulty part issue.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

This '05 Xterra had a thorough check out & diagnostic. Then 500 miles later, at around 46000 miles, when the fuel indicator was at 1/2 tank- the needle suddenly plunged to below empty, a light came on and the service engine soon light came on. This was all very alarming, and we were stuck in bumper-bumper traffic in a bad part of phoenix when it happened. It wasn't hot out, just a big traffic jam in 5:00 rush, and we were nowhere near a gas station. It was terrible, and we were very scared to be stranded. After that we bought a huge gas can, and just drove around with 10 gallons of gas just in case. That is terrible, to have to drive wondering if when you'll actually run out of gas, vs. Just being told you are out of gas. This started happening during the beginning of our cross-country trip to the coast and back. It was an issue the entire time, and very nerve wracking. Nissan should fix this, since I've returned from our trip and found that 100's of people are having exact same problem! this is a faulty part, and it makes me wonder what else will go wrong. This is the first Nissan our family has had, and I am afraid we might not be buying another one, and telling others to steer clear of Nissan.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2010

The fuel sending unit on my 2005 Nissan Xterra failed at 50105 miles. This appears to be a common problem and it is under recall not for my year/VIN). This is a manufacturer's defect and Nissan should extend the recall to cover all 2005-2010 Xterras. Observed problem: 1. Service engine light 2. Code: p0463 3. Fuel gauge no longer working (filled tank showing half filled).

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2010

Check engine soon light illuminated. Gas gauge inaccurate. Gas light illuminated when plenty of gas is still in tank. Dte feature no longer shows numbers only dashes. Only 66,000 miles on vehicle. This problem started around 64,000 miles.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2010

On my 2005 Nissan Xterra the service light came on and my fuel tank always reads empty. Dealer states its a faulty fuel sensor but wont fix for free. I found online that this is a vary common problem and was directed to this site.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra that has an issue with the fuel sending unit. The gas gauge takes a long time to register that the tank is full and now the service engine light is on. I have read many forums where people with both the Xterra and pathfinder are having the same issue. They did a recall on the 2001-2003 Xterra for the same problem. How is this not a recall. This is an expense that owners should not have to bear as it is a very common problem. Consumers need help with this issue.

15 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

"I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. After driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. I went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600. ".

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2010

I had less than 1/4 of a tank of gas, when the service engine soon light came on. On my way home, I stopped by auto zone and had the code checked. It came up with po463, which indicated the fuel sending sensor. I immediately stopped and filled up. The gauge appeared to go to full. Upon searching the internet I found this is a common problem and was recalled on several Nissan models between 2000-2004. I talked to the dealer, but since my 5 year warranty expired this month and I have 63,000 miles on my Xterra, the repair wouldn't be covered. The cost of repair would be around $600 - $700. I decided to just keep up with my mileage to make sure I don't run out of gas. Since then I have driven 270 miles. The service engine soon light went off around 200 miles, but I am still nervous that the unit is malfunctioning and it could reoccur. My complaint is that if this problem was recalled in previous models, and it was considered a safety hazard that could result in a major traffic accident, why isn't is being recalled on the 2005-2007 models?.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

The fuel sensor/sending unit on my 2005 Nissan Xterra has failed and now my gas gauge does not register a full tank and my service engine light remains on. This is apparently an extremely expensive and common failure for the Xterra and this same part was recalled on the 2004 model.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

2005 Nissan Xterra. Gas gauge works sporadically, never know how much gas is in tank. Could cause an accident by running out of gas. There is a recall on Nissan vehicles for 2006 and 2008 with the same problem but all from 2005 to 2010 are having the same problem.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2010

The following recall is identical to symptoms I observe with my 2005 Nissan x-terra, since 10/2008: recall #38731: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2006 and model year 2008 frontier, Xterra and pathfinder vehicles. The molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

Nissan Xterra 2005 -- faulty fuel sensor, fuel gauge does not report gas in tank.

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra 4x4. Just recently I filled up my gas tank to full, but when I looked at my fuel gauge it just stayed at the half mark. It took a couple of hours before it climbed to full. My mileage was at 44,950 miles when this first occurred. It is still happening everytime I have to fill my gas tank. I keep filling at half because I'm afraid I will run out of gas on the freeway. I've noticed some other 2005 Xterra owners had the same problem. They should have a recall on this because of their malfunctioning part. I called Nissan about this but they told me my car was not covered because my car VIN# was not under it.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

My 2005 Nissan Xterra se has approximately 73,000 miles on it, and the fsu (fuel sending unit) has stopped working. In other words, the gas gauge does not read accurately. For example, yesterday I filled the tank, and the gas gauge reads anywhere from a quarter-tank to a half-tank (changes sporadically). Nissan has issued a recall for this issue for some 2006 and 2008 models, but from my online research, this issue seems to be occurring with other model years. The vehicle was significantly redesigned with the 2005 model, and subsequent years have seen only minor updates to this redesign. So it stands to reason that the recall should be expanded to include 2005 models, when everything was redesigned. Clearly, not knowing how much gas you have in the tank is a safety issue, as one could end up running out of gas on the freeway, or out in a rural area at night, or some other unsafe scenario.

23 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2010

Noticed fuel gauge sticking at current level when filling tank about last three fill ups. On my 2005 Nissan Xterra. Filled it up tonight and drove home 1/2 mile pulled into the drive way and noticed check engine light on. Used my obdii tester and got a code p0463 fuel level sensor circuit high input. I looked this up on the internet and found countless people with the same issue on Nissan Xterras and pathfinders. I also found the bad info on just what is involved in fixing this issue. I understand that this is not a life issue unless you run out of gas on the way to the emergency room. Or the emergency response team is in a Nissan ect. Its hard to believe that this is not a recall item.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

Fuel sending unit, shows I have 1/4 tank of fuel but was actually empty. Causing my car to die on the side of the road multiple times as the gauge/fuel sending unit is faulty showing the incorrect unit.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

I pulled into a gas station to fill up my tank 2 weeks ago and after filling up the tank left the gas station and realized that the gauge did not move. It was still stuck at 1/4 of a tank. I drove the car all week and the fuel gauge slowly went up to 1/2 of a tank however I kept track of the mileage and had to fill the tank again by the next week. The tank again was not working properly and my wife who also drives the vehicle does not keep track of the mileage as closely as I do and I am worried that she will have a problem with running out of fuel on a major highway during rush hour. After the 2nd week of the fuel gauge not working properly today I started the vehicle and the service engine soon light came on and stayed on for the entire 35 miles that I traveled to work. I did some research on the internet and found that many people have complaints for this same issue and found that it may be the fuel sending unit. I see that the 2006 Xterra's have been recalled however mine is a 2005 and wonder why it is also not being recalled? I fear for the safety of my wife driving this vehicle.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The truck starting having a fuel gauge problem, but I didn't think much of it because my car still was running. The problem started about 3 months ago 4/1/10 where I would put a full tank of gas and the fuel reader would show that is was still empty. About 3 days ago on 7/28/10 I was about to get freeway, thank god that I had not get on freeway way when out of a sudden the truck starting shaking and then eventually died. I was stuck a traffic lights for about 10 mins. I tried to start it again and pushed gas but still no luck. Until a 3rd time tried it and then it started. When this happened I realized I had to take it to the dealer. I took it to my expert mechanic and the said it was a control modulator and told me that is was going to be $1,000. 00. At this point in my life I am not able to afford that, but I need my vehicle running. Please advise what can we do and if there will be a recall. I also saw there are many more complaints about this and this can be dangerous for anyone that owns a Nissan Xterra 2005.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

We have a 2005 Nissan Xterra, one day we filled it at a gas station and noticed right after leaving the station that the gauge still said a quarter of a tank, so we pulled into another gas station a few miles down to see if it would take more gas and it only took $0. 60 worth, so when we started the engine again, the service engine soon light was on. As we were driving down the road the gauge slowly started rising to the full mark. We had to fill it again before we got back from our trip and it did the same thing, didn't register our full tank and then slowly went up to the full mark, and the service engine soon light has stayed on the whole time. We cant tell if we still have fuel or not.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

The fuel sending unit on my 2005 x-terra has stopped working properly. It shows that I'm empty right after I fill it up and decides to work after about 50 miles after fill up, then with about a quarter tank of gas left, it says that it's empty, plus the "distance to empty" calculator stopped working and constantly blinks - -. Although this has been a heavily recorded issue with many Nissan vehicles for over 10 years they still refuse to help me out with resolving this issue and claims that it will cost me over $600 to fix it.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

After filling up gas from 1/4th tank full. The indicator still reads 1/4th tank. Then check engine light came on. I researched online and found many reports of this and people asking why it hasn't been recalled. It is apparently a faulty fuel sending unit that corrodes after 30,000 miles and is not covered.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. While traveling at speeds of 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard and within seconds, the fuel level indicator dropped from one half tank to empty. The dealer replaced the fuel sending unit and fuel gauge. The failure mileage was 47,000 and the current mileage was 48,000. Updated 05/19/1. Updated 06/03/bf updated 06/10/10.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600. I eventually ran into a situation where I ran out of gas and was stranded due to the inability to know how much gas was in my tank. The vehicle stalled and I was stuck on the edge of a busy street until I could be towed.

32 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

2005 Nissan Xterra fuel level sensor failure. After filling fuel tank sensor shows empty and the service engine soon appears.

33 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. While the contact was driving approximately between 60-65 mph, the "check engine" warning light illuminated with the fuel gauge displaying an inaccurate reading of a half of a tank. The fuel gauge reading fluctuated from empty to half full at various speeds. The failure became progressively worse. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing. The failure was related to the fuel sending unit. The contact ordered the part and informed that he would repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was 75,000. The VIN was unavailable.

34 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2010

1) nothing in particular leading up to my failure, normal driving until I reached 1/4 tank of gas. From some online research, I believe it is a defective part that Nissan is ignoring. The corresponding Nissan error code is 0463. 2) when / if I drive my vehicle down to 1/4 tank of gas, the service engine light goes on. It is the fuel level sensor. If I fill my tank and drive a while it will go off. If I fuel up before I reach 1/4 tank the light will not go on. This will happen every time. 3) through advice from a Nissan master tech, I now fill up before I reach 1/4 tank. He says that I am not hurting my vehicle in any way. To fix the merely annoying issue, I would have to pay around $600.

35 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

I own a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The fuel level sending unit supplied by Nissan has gone bad 2 times. I have replaced it once with a Nissan supplied part. Both times it said there was a quarter tank of fuel left but the tank was actually empty. The first time my wife ran out of gas in traffic. This a very common failure in the 2005-2010 model year Nissan Xterra and various other Nissan models. I have not replaced the current bad unit. I filed a complaint with Nissan to get the part replaced again, they told me no.
