1 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2021

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the vehicle loss motive power while driving. The contact stated that while attempting to move from a stop, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact stated that the vehicle revved up between 2,000 - 3,000 rpm however, the vehicle failed to respond with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to and independent mechanic and was diagnosed that coolant had leaked into the transmission and that the transmission failed due to the coolant contamination. The mechanic informed the contact that the transmission and radiator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither a dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted or notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,000.

2 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

The metal tubes that separate engine coolant from the transmission fluid crack. Coolant and transmission fluid mixes and cause the transmission to fail. The substance is milky, and cloudy like a milk shake. Car was in motion on the city we were coming from the store.

3 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2019

I bought a used 2006 Xterra and I had no idea that the transmission coolers fail prematurely. All seemed ok for 2 weeks. One day driving back from dropping my 2 daughters off at their mothers house, I was on an incline, in a blind curve, and the vehicle stopped pulling completely. While stopped I tried to check the trans fluid and was almost ran over by a tractor and trailer because he couldnt see through the curve to know I was broke down in the road. Then 10 minutes or so goes by and a minivan comes around the curve and had to lock his brakes up to keep from running into me. I was almost hit 2 times in a matter of 20 - 30 minutes waiting for help to arrive.

4 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2018

Transmission cooler inside radiator failed, causing antifreeze to mix with transmission fluid. Causing the transmission to fail. At 91,000 miles.

5 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2018

Radiator design failure allowed mixing of antifreeze with automatic transmission fluid. Caused failure of both radiator and transmission. Nissan previously offered assistance in repair but discontinued. Will not repair my Xterra as is now past extended warranty, but well under total miles. Overheating in traffic stop lead to failure. Nissan should have recalled all 2005-2007 Xterras and frontiers with defective radiator. Nissan took no action to notify owners that has not had repair. Nissan only notified owners that had experienced failure and offered to compensate costs. Failure was preventable with a fairly simple by pass of the transmission cooler or a replacement of the radiator to a redesigned version Nissan issued in 2010. Many owners were helped by Nissan previously because of a class action lawsuit. Now, Nissan is no longer assisting owners with the failure even though it is still caused by the design failure of the radiator and not any action by the owner. If the owner had driven the vehicle harder and added more miles faster and experienced the failure, Nissan would have compensated them I. Whole or in part. Owners with low mileage and older vechicles that are now experiencing the failure or will in the future are not being assisted by Nissan. Nissan should have done a complete recall of all vechicles with the defective radiator. Owners are now forced to bear costs of $7,000 in repairs. A transmission failure can be a serious safety hazard if the transmission were to lock up while driving. Fortunately my transmission failure occurred slowly and the radiator failure was catastrophic so the vechicle could not be driven. Nissan should be made to supplement their prior extended warranty to cover any failure of the radiator causing contamination of the transmission fluid. Failure is referred to as strawberry milkshake of death.

6 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

While driving on the highway the transmission failed. No warning, just check engine light and the transmission wouldn't go above 30 miles per hour without cutting off the car completely. Had to be towed. After troubleshooting problem the radiator on transmission failed. Come issue for this vehicle, just as noted in the safety recall a few years ago but Nissan is no longer supporting their customers for this safety issue. Well, after $3700, my transmission is rebuilt with new radiator. Nissan should have covered this safety issue. . I was in traffic on a highway and the transmission failed, it was very stressful and unsafe for me to change lanes and pull over on a highway that has a 70 mph limit and I was in the middle lane. Even though I put my flasher on traffic was very heavy and it was truly unsafe for not only myself but my passengers and those cars behind me that had to suddenly slow down because of my mechanical transmission failure.

7 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2016

Catastrophic transmission failure due to radiator defect (coolantt contamination).

8 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2016

The coolant leaked into the transmission, causing the transmission to fail. Vehicle was in motion on a highway. *recall transmission failure*.

9 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2016

I have transmission fluid in my anti freeze and anti freeze in my transmission. Im told by a mechanic that this is a known Nissan issue. Apparently something in the radiator rots and the fluids mix causing transmission failure. Mine hasn't failed yet, but my fluids are all contaminated as is the radiator and tranny?.

10 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving 25 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

11 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

Well known problem with the radiator coolant leaking into the transmission lines and thus into the transmission. Simple, inexpensive fix to replace the faulty radiator was not communicated to me and now it's too late to save the transmission. Nissan got away with murder and caused thousands of people money that they should not have had to pay for defective parts. These parts should have been recalled as they cause a major safety hazard while driving. Having your transmission fail on you while you're driving is a major safety concern. But because not enough people actually died from it a recall was not required.

12 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

(fe dealer info inadequate) tl the contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving approximately 35 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle did not respond. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer (hasbrouck heights in hasbrouck, NJ) where it was diagnosed that the radiator leaked and caused the transmission to fail. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

13 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2016

Transmission failure. I purchased this vehicle with 75,000 miles in October 2015. At 84,000 miles, I noticed a clunk and vehicle slowed all the way down when the automatic transmission was shifting into drive at about 45 miles an hour. I was driving in rush hour traffic and the vehicle slowed way down even though I was trying to accelerate. I was nearly reareneded due to the sudden stall due to the transmission. I took it to the Nissan dealership only to find out that the transmission was contaminated with radiator fluids. There's was a deductible of $3,000, what a savings (sarcasm). It was explained that it was a known problem. How could I be responsible for something that easily could have been prevented, especially if nissa knew about this very common problem. Nissan really has let me down. I will never buy another Nissan unless I am reimbursed for most of whati paid. I am also extremely upset that I very easily could have been in a serious accident due to the sudden failure of the transmission, especially as I was trying to accelerate when just entering the interstate where the speed limit was 70 mph and I suddenly slowed down due to the failing transmission.

14 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2015

The transmission failed during heavy commute traffic hwy at 60mph creating a near miss multi vehicle collision. No injuries or accident occured because of the malfunction. The vehicle lost power and was pulled safely to the side of the road. The cause of the transmission failure was diagnosed to be transmission failure due to contamination from engine coolant. A common problem with this make and model as thousands of consumer complaints have been filed but ignored by the NHTSA and Nissan. The factory radiator has a known defect which caused the intercooler tubing from the transmission to the radiator to crack and fail thus causing cross contamination of tranmission fluid and engine coolant from the radiator to mix and destroy the transmission. The failure requires replacement of the radiator and replacement or rebuilding of the transmission at a cost of $5,500. In over 45 years of driving all makes, years and models of vehicles both foreign and domestic, I have never had one failure of this type before, even in vehicles with over 300,000 miles of use. In my humble opinion, this is nothing less than an engineering defect either purposefully designed as built in obsolescense, or overlooked and denied by Nissan as a materials defect in manufacturing. Anyone can use a search engine on the internet to find that this is a common occurance but no recall has been enacted because there has been no deaths reported yet. Because my vehicle is out of warranty, but of this low milage, it was not a maintenance issue, as it is a 2 wheel drive vehicle not used for off road but standard paved roadway use. Oil changes and inspections were completed as recommended.

15 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2015

Cracked radiator hose caused coolant to mix with transmission fluid thereby ruining the transmission. Cost included radiator and transmission (used) replacement. This issue would have been proactively repaired / replaced the radiator prior to the issue occurring had Nissan notified me of it. Instead, it cost an extra $3500 to replace both radiator and transmission. A totally preventable situation, never mind the potentially hazardous situation had the transmission failed at highway speeds. No excuse for Nissan.

16 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2015

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving at approximately 40 mph, the transmission failed and the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the radiator and the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 121,000. The VIN was unavailable.

17 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2014

Radiator, which was recalled and I was never notified about, cracked leaking coolant into the transmission ultimately causing the transmission to fail.

18 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2014

Antifreeze in transmission causing smoke from under hood and transmission failure.

19 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

SUV started vibrating badly while driving at speeds near 60 mph. This happened for about 3 months. Took vehicle to sheehy Nissan in annapolis, MD to have investigated and was told coolant had mixed with transmission fluid due to a failure in radiator. I was told that a costly repair is my only option, and that while I can drive it now, a total failure at "some point later" is imminent. How can I drive this vehicle on the streets knowing that at any moment the transmission could fail??/.

20 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

The transmission is failing due to the transmission cooler inside the radiator allowing coolant to get into the transmission causing a catastrophic failure. It is my understanding that this is a common problem and that Nissan knew it was from a defect in the radiator. I've seen online that many people with a 2005-2010 Xterra, frontier and pathfinder with the 4. 0 v6 engine are having this problem.

21 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

My 2006 Nissan Xterra with 96,560 miles experienced transmission failure caused by a crack in the transmission cooler inside of the radiator.

22 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2013

I was driving down the highway with my family in the car. The car was traveling at 65mph and suddenly started to jerk back and forth and swerve side to side. Then it suddenly slowed down and we were almost hit from behind. Then vehicle continued to do this until I was able to get the vehicle off the highway and on the side of the road. Im told that the radiator had catastrophically failed inside and sent transmission fluid into the radiator causing the transmission to fail. This is extremely dangerous and is my sons vehicle that he drives daily or at least used to.

23 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2013

My 2006 Nissan Xterra w/ 119,000 miles experienced transmission failure caused by a failure of the radiator. I understand this is an ongoing investigation and would like to have notice of where the investigation stands at this time. Thank you, ken carter.

24 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

Transmission is failing because of defect in radiator that allows coolant in to the transmission.

25 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

I was driving about 45mph when my vehicle jerked and briefly lost propulsion. This has happened approximately six times on different occasions and at different speeds. I feared that it would happen while pulling out in traffic. About two months after the first incident my mechanic has diagnosed that the transmission has failed, which is related to this phenomenon.

26 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2012

Due to a cracked radiator, coolant leaked into the transmission system causing the transmission to fail. Luckily, was able to take vehicle out of service before more damage could occur, as a result the firth gear was deemed inoperative. The cracked radiator was replaced, and a new transmission will have to be installed. The vehicle is drivable, but gas mileage has significantly been reduced because of the loss of the fifth gear. I talked to numerous repair and transmission specialist, and this is a very common problem. Researching on the NHTSA website a active investigation was found under NHTSA action number # dp12004.

27 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

Due to a crack in the internal radiator, my transmission failed. I was almost side swiped pulling out of a parking lot because my Xterra wouldn't go into 1st gear. The crack in the coolant cord is a manufacturing defect, but Nissan refuses to pay for the cost of this product defect and correlating damages.

28 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2012

Transmission failure. The transmission radiator failed causing coolant to leak into the transmission which destroyed the transmission. I spoke to the Nissan dealership and they acknowledged that this has been an issue with the Xterras. Nissan does have a program to rebate some of the repair ($4,500 dollars). This program has a cutoff at 100k miles. My vehicle has 119k miles. Nissan will not do anything to help with the cost of repair although they have acknowledged that is a problem. Nissan does not have to worry about having me as a customer in the future!.

29 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2012

On June 7, 2012, Nissan told me that my radiator failed causing my transmission to fail. I have 3 children ages 7 weeks to 5 yrs and count my self lucky that the problem was diagnosed before a potentially life threatening transmission failure on busy los angeles county streets or freeways. I was later appalled to find out that Nissan knew of the issue, but covered it up as evidenced in a NY times article dated 8/24/2011. The service advisor at the dealer informed me that my car situation was an issue that he had seen before. I am now being told that it will cost me $4000 for my car to be repaired due to a known defective radiator that would have cost a fraction of that to replace. I am still without a car after 11 days.

30 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

Driving approx. 30 mph when the car stopped responding. I got it looked at, and it was determined that the transmission failed due to a failed transmission cooler which caused water from the radiator to back up into the transmission.

31 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2012

Coolant leaked from the radiator into the transmission and caused transmission failure.

32 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while traveling 65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated as the vehicle gradually lost power. The contact was able to merge to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to be restarted and was driven to the dealer where it was confirmed that the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the issue. The failure mileage was 54,000 and the current mileage was 82,000.
