1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2020

I was required to replace the oem radiator due to appearance of cross-contamination between automatic transmission fluid and engine coolant. The discovery was made early enough to avoid being stranded. It is unknown whether the amount of contamination that preceded the replacement has caused permanent damage, but the vehicle is functioning normally as of this moment. I am aware that Nissan has been challenged on the topic of extended warranty support and/or recall for this issue over a span of years, and this report is filed to add a data point.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

The transmission was destroyed because a factory default with the radiator leaking antifreeze and transmission fluid into the transmission causing my transmission to self destruct. My safety was not safe since Nissan knew about the defect and I could have ceased into anything at any time. There was no warning lights it just self destruct. Nissan has done nothing to inspect their failure. It is a well known problem.

3 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2019

I purchased a 2006 Nissan Xterra after-market in August 2019, mileage 144k. There was no indication of a problem during a test-drive, and it otherwise appeared to be in good condition. Three days later, during city driving, the car began to strain to enter first gear from a stopped position (stop sign, traffic light), first a little, and then significantly, and began obstructing traffic-flow, and began overheating after multiple stop/starts. I was barely able to get the car home (4 miles) without having to pull over and call a tow-truck. A trip to the transmission shop on the next business day confirmed not just a transmission problem, but was told it was due to a known defect in Nissan SUV-type vehicles from this time-period. The car from the used dealer came with "car protection plus" coverage specifically for power-train issues, who denied that they would cover this particular transmission problem for this reason. I now own a very expensive paperweight, or pay a repair bill of $3k-$4k to fix a transmission and radiator that is more than the value of the car.

4 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

Radiator coolant leaked into transmission and we only have 70,000 mileage. Purchased extended warranty but Nissan service said they don't covere the repair and our extended warranty expired. We saved this cat for our 16 years old son for his college soon ang preparing for dmv. We save money for his car so we don't need to worry. Now, we are worried because it will cost us$8,000 for repair by replacing transmission and radiator. Besides this I have to pay $190. 00 for diagnostic fee. We are not rich and we prepared this car for our son, for his safety, now his 16 years old this June 2019 and ready to take the wheels, this car is his car for college. Now, I'm heartbreaking because it's garage kept car with blanket all the time. 70k mileage only. Security plus says 72 months/75,000 on odometer. We really need help for repair.

8 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2018

While driving my "check engine soon" light appear, today I took it to a Nissan dealership to get a diagnostic to fix it. To make short the transmission and radiator needs replacement ($4,600. 00 dlls)because there's antifreeze in the transmission fluid. Online I found out that this problem is common to 2006 Xterras, funny thing is Nissan know all about it, but so far hasn't call a recall to fix their own mess. Another thing, I've got serviced my vehicle at to Nissan dealership s and never ever make a simple comment or advised about this problem with the radiator to me on my prior visits. It seems to me that they are reckless for holding critical info about preventable issues, specially since this is a design flaw on their part.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

Vehicle radiator rusted internally, therefore intermix coolant and transmission fluid. Automobile constantly serviced at Nissan dealers, no warning from Nissan.

10 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2018

This car was purchased in California, I have had this car serviced at Nissan dealers from California to connecticut, from universal city Nissan in los angeles to bruce bennett in wilton, CT with stops in between. In a normal service check, it states on all invoices that fluids are checked. Today sir, I found out that fluids are not checked and due to Nissan's negligence my radiator and transmission are now married (intermix) and since that marriage a new radiator and transmission are being required. If you had performed the proper fluid checks, then the marriage could have been prevented and no replacement necessary. I want compensation, I. E. Radiator/transmission on this 12 year Xterra.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Car just shut off in traffic loosing all power and braking causing me to crash into the back of a stopped car at a red-light. After inspection from a mechanic shop, they informed me that something in the computer had fried causing the car to shut off, and it had also caused the transmission control unit module to go bad making the car not drive able.

2006 Nissan Xterra se. Consumer writes in regard to transmission safety recall and reimbursement for replacement of part.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

Possible transmission cooler leaking and allowing antifreeze coolant to get into the transmission and ruin it costinf a new transmission and radiator on top of the repair labor costs and Nissan offering no help at all.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2017

Transmission destroy by leaking radiator antifreeze into transmission also catalytic converters clogged, my Xterra only has 70 k miles on it, to early for all of this problems to happen it's going to cost me a lot of money to fix it, please help.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2017

Takata recall transmission and radiator faliure.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2017

Radiator failed internally and allowed transmission fluid to to mix with coolant and circulate through the transmission, destroying both the radiator and transmission. This happened suddenly on a a very busy highway and caused the total loss of propulsion. This endangered me due to the fast moving vehicles around that didn't know why I was slowing to a stop in traffic and I was very lucky to not be run over. Cost of repair is at least $6,000, dealer price is more like $7,000 this happened when my Xterra only had 110,970 miles and with no warning at all. This is total loss of the vehicle since it doesn't make any sense to repair at this price a vehicle with less resale value than the cost of the repair. I've attached pictures of a repair estimate and the "strawberry milkshake" looking mix of transmission fluid and radiator coolant that resulted.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

Nissan Xterra 2006 94,105 miles trans starting to slip all issues lead to radiator leake.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2016

Vehicle would not shift on busy rd. Coolant leaked onto transmission per Nissan dealer. Nissan has known about this issue. This could have a bad safety issue as I had to try to get vehicle to dealer. I transport a handicapped chip ad well ad alzheimer/dementia clients and this could have been led to a very bad accident. Why had there not been a recall on this being Nissan has known of this problem?.

19 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2016

Radiator leaked coolant into the transmission . My truck is now sitting at aamco with 5200 dollars worth of transmission radiator and computer board damage.

Coolant leaking into transmission. While driving, vehicle shuttering, shaking and overall unsafe for myself and my 5-year old son.

21 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2016

Like countless others, I have the smod, or strawberry milkshake of death, on my 2006 Nissan Xterra s. The radiator failed, which allowed coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. This results in the failure of the transmission and the radiator. Nissan knew about this early on and did nothing to help owners until forced to by settling a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit was useless to me as I was already past the period covered by the settlement. All I could do was wait and hope it didn't happen to me. That hope ended yesterday.

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2016

The transmission is damaged because of a faulty radiator that leaked coolant into the transmission causing it to fail. My car was a standstill and I was pulling into traffic and my car barely moved causing the oncoming car to swerve and slam his brakes to avoid hitting me. This a a safety concern, especially when you have kids in the car.

23 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle shook violently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the transmission and radiator failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.

24 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2016

I was driving on the interstate when I started hearing a weird sound coming from the car an it started to slow down. I about got hit when all the cars were flying pass me and I was trying to get over. I called the dealer and found out it was the transmission and after almost getting killed all they had to tell me was it wasn't there problem an that it would cost me over 3000 to fix. I just got this car used and still owe over 8000 on it. I cant even drive it. This is so unsafe somebody is going to end up dead because of this problem. If it hasnt already killed some people.

25 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2016

While driving home from work on busy streets in the pittsburgh area, our 2006 Nissan Xterra lost forward power while navigating a right turn onto another busy street. Vehicle never lost electrical power, but had no mechanical power. There were other vehicles driving opposite me as well as vehicles behind me. It was like the vehicle was forced into neutral. I had the vehicle towed to a Nissan dealership for them to investigate, they stated that this is a known problem with Nissan Xterras and frontiers that the radiator communicates with the transmission creating a resultant need for a rebuild of the transmission and replacement of the radiator and coolant flush. For this to occur while driving is dangerous not only to the driver and passenger of the vehicle, but it poses a public risk as well and could have resulted in serious injury/death. Nissan USA should be responsible for repairs, but more importantly should be held accountable for such repairs as they constitute a safety concern while driving their vehicles.

26 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2016

Check engine light came on, took my truck to the dealer to have a diagnostic check, was told by the service staff that the transmission was contaminated with coolant that had leaked from the radiator. Upon further research, I discovered that other Nissan makes, models between 2004-2006 had a design flaw which caused the problem in which I now face. . I contacted Nissan for some financial assistance on the repair on my transmission, since it appears that the issues related to my problem are from a flaw in the designs of the vehicle. I was told that because my mileage was over a 100,000 miles and past the warranty, that there wasn't anything that could be done as far assisting me with the repairs. I will never buy another Nissan product again. . . . It should be also noted that there was a class action lawsuit again Nissan regarding the very problem that I'm faced dealing with. . .

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2016

Transmission cooler cracked causing water/anti-freeze to leak into the transmission. Car still runs, but according to mechanic, transmission doesn't have much life left. Estimate to repair is $4700.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

I bought the Nissan Xterra last year and unfortunately the transmission when out at 145,300 miles I talked to a Nissan representative but they said that Nissan only covers only before the 100,000 miles but that is completely unacceptable because be are not responsible for the factory defects that should been fixed within the first days of production now I had to pay 4,500 dollars for get the transmission fixed a fits just a pain in the neck because I could use the money to feed my family or pay my rent but no I had to pay for a car that Nissan doesn't take any responsibly over the 100,000 miles that it's unbelievable I want to et reimbursed by Nissan what I paid for the transmission repairs I have all the documentation.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2015

We were pulling a light 18 foot trailer up a steep hill, at low speed due to the grade. It was on hwy 89, about 5 miles w of garden city, utah. The rpm of the car raced up to 4,000, it lost power and lugged. We were fortunate that there was a turn off a very short distance ahead. We were also fortunate that the failure did not occur when we were turning left in front of on-coming traffic. The engine was smoking hot, even though the radiator didn't show any heat. It took a while to recognize the issue.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2015

The first incident was a couple months ago when my car just decided to stop in traffic all the sudden. Just shut down. Then yesterday I was driving to work and a car in front of me decided to slow down. When I hit the breaks to slow down the car would not accelerate back up it decreased. I could not get it to go. I restarted the car and it turned on and went again. I looked at this website and saw all the complaints. I have had all the same issues with stalling, not starting, and no acceleration. I took it to a transmission shop and they could not detect anything wrong as no codes and of course it did not do it for them when they test drove it. I took my car to the Nissan dealership showed them the print out from this site and told them I am having all those problems within the last couple months. They told me since my VIN was not included in the recall they basically could not help without charging me $900 for a radiator plus the engine control module $78. I had to pay $100 just for them to look at it. They told me a whole new transmission would be $9000. This is a horrible problem this vehicle is having and is very dangerous for your car to just turn off while driving. I have a small child in the car with me. Very scary would could happen. I do not care what the mileage is on the vehicle. Nissan needs to include all Xterra's no matter what the VIN is for the time frame! all these complaints need action. I little to quinky dink they are all happening now! Nissan dealership told me they would recommend: ecm relay $78, radiator $740, plus some other maintenance stuff. When I went to leave after having them replace the. Ecm I had a lovely letter stating they did a complimentary appraisal of my vehicle. They did everything to confirm it is the problem, but offered no help unless I fork out the $$$$$.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2015

I was driving on the interstate at about 70 miles per hour went my car starting losing power and jerking. The cars behind me were getting right behind my car and slowing down, they were yelling at me to speed up and, I was so scared one of them would hit the back of my car and cause a accident and kill me,I tried to get the car to the to the side of the interstate but had a hard time crossing traffic,I was praying to make it across with out getting . Nission knew that my xteria was was recalled for this issue but did not send me a recall notice or anything in the mail, now they want me to pay the first $3000 to fix my transmission. But they build the car that way so I think they should fix it. I had a guy who worked on my car before and he said that due to a cracked coolant leak into my transmission, my transmission went out. I sure wish no one else went through the same thing on the interstate, it was bad. , I am disabled and cannot afford the $3000 so my car is now useless and I have no way to go to the doctor.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2015

Takata recall ive had problems with tranmisson for a about 3 yrs . . I called Nissan recall and they have always told me its not in the USA. Driving down the road, vehicle rpm went up as the speed decease. I place the vehicle in the next lower gear to get to my location. Check the radiator later and it has a oily creamy thick mixture of radiator coolant and transmission fluid.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2015

The Xterra began overheating and driving in an unsafe manner at highway speeds. Diagnosis at a Nissan dealer was a failed cooler line allowed coolant in the radiator and that both the radiator and transmission would have to be replaced at a cost of $5800. There was no prior warning to the failure. The vehicle is just outside of an extended 10k warranty/$3000 copay Nissan offered as a result of a class action lawsuit for this issue.
