36 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2015

The power steering fluid entered into the transmission causing a sudden loss of power of vehicle. Nissan recognized this a problem.

37 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2015

Driving home from work my vehicle started to tremble and shudder at speeds above 30-40 mph. Eventually after much hesitation and loud engine revving I decided to pull over and turn the vehicle off. Turned it back on and got about a few hundred feet down the road when the same problem occurred. The transmission wasn't responsive with the engine causing me to cut someone off just to pull of the road safely. I have heard the common issue with Nissan's transmission/coolant contamination and decided to look further into the issue after getting towed home. $100 down the drain. Sure enough my coolant reservoir and radiator cap were smothered in a thick goop known as the infamous "smod". There is trans fluid mixed into my coolant and more than likely, coolant in my transmission. This is design flaw in Nissan. This problem should be resolved completely by Nissan with no fault to their dedicated customers. Warranties need to be extended past 100k because that's when the issue is occurring in most Xterra, pathfinder, and frontiers. I'll be damned if Nissan only partially cover my cost repair leaving the bulk to me. I am a student working a full time job trying to pay for their education bit by bit. This is not what others in similar situation need to deal with and neither do I. Remember, Nissan is only successful and wealthy because of us, the consumer. Give back to those who helped you build a reputable auto manufacturer.

38 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

For a cracked radiator the coolant leak into the transmission destroying it. The cost of repair is around $ 6,000. The Nissan dealer to not want to assume that it is a manufacturer defect.

39 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2015

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact discovered that the fuel tank was empty and the fuel gauge displayed incorrect reading levels. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was radiator coolant inside the transmission. The transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact mentioned that the air conditioner and heating system became inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure mileage was 102,000.

40 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

Upon turning a corner after coming to a complete stop at a stop sign in my neighborhood, I went to accelerate and match the speed of oncoming traffic. The gear failed to shift appropriately (transmission) and giving the car gas simply revved the engine. Luckily the approaching car responded well and slowed to avoid a rear collision while I eased off the pedal and then gently accelerated again to my local mechanic. Upon his examination of my 2006 Xterra, he determined that the transmission fluid and coolant were mixing and destroying both my radiator and transmission. A quick search on the internet revealed that this dangerous problem is common among Nissan owners! when I purchased the vehicle from smithtown Nissan in 2010 and subsequently, there was absolutely no notification or recall regarding this dangerous hazard. This is unacceptable and life-threatening. There settlement of a class action lawsuit is insufficient (a $2500 - $3k) CO-pay to replace the transmission and potentially have the same defect again! my wife and kids rely on my car every day and I feel fortunate that I did not wait any longer to have the car examined, but I am extremely disturbed by Nissan's negligence.

41 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

Transmission damage attributed to contamination by engine coolant. The source of the contamination is a cracked atf line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator. My 2006 Xterra has had same issue. Trans and radiator had to be replaced.

42 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2014

The initial incident was failed timing chain tensioner guides. As indicated earlier Nissan knowingly redesigned the parts since the originals were found to wear through, causing the timing chain to rub directly on the metal post of the tensioner and contact the housing cover. During the repair the Nissan service department confirmed the failed radiator coolant contamination addressed in odi NHTSA action number: dp12004. The timing chain and guides were replaced; the radiator was replaced; coolant was flushed; transmission was drained, flushed, and filled. The service department also confirmed Nissan, n. A. Would not offer any amount of repair assistance. Total cost was $2200. The day after the vehicle was repaired it suddenly decelerated from 55mph to 30mph and the rpm's increased to 4k+ while traveling on a multi lane dark country highway at 11pm. The section of highway did not have an emergency lane or shoulder. A vehicle was in the left lane and a semi-truck was quickly approaching from the rear in the right lane. Once crossing the bridge the vehicle was jerked to the shoulder, avoiding a rear collision from the approaching semi-truck. The vehicle was turned off and restarted. The rpm's returned to 1k, the transmission was in neutral, and the check engine was illuminated. The following day Nissan service confirmed it was a failing valve body as a result of the coolant contamination. The wholesale repair cost was quoted at $1400. Again, Nissan, n. A. Would not address the failure. At this time the repair has not, and will not, be completed.

43 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Faulty radiator and transmission Nissan will not cover for damage ,vehicle suddenly dies while driving, very much known problem.

44 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2014

While driving 70 miles an hour on the highway my car suddenly shot up to 4000 rpm and wouldn't go faster than 30 miles an hour. After my car was towed to a local mechanic friend of mine's shop he told me the radiator had cracked, leaked coolant into the transmission, fried the transmission and torque control valve, all valves and seals, as well as both catalytic converters. The cost to fix would be $6000. Nissan needs to pay for this because of their factory defect!!!.

45 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2014

2006 Nissan Xterra. Consumer writes in regards to transmission issues. The dealer inform the consumer the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced, because coolant was leaking into the transmission. The consumer also stated it felt as though the tires were slipping when taking off from a stop.

46 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that when depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

47 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2014

I'm the owner of a 2006 Xterra I was coming to a stop at a major intersection with no previous malfunctions of any kind. I have driven this vehicle across country 4 times and have meet all required preventative maintenance requirements and scheduled tune ups. Now back to the intersection we came to a stop when the light turned green I depressed the gas pedal and it hesitated for a second and approached 10 mph and then it just revved as if the transmission was no longer engaged and the check engine light illuminated on the dash. I turned on my foreways and naturally proceeded to investigate the situation. To my surprise their was no evidence of external damage or tampering with anything underneath the vehicle. A police officer came to the intersection to assist myself and my family I entered the vehicle and shifted from park to drive and it took off as if there was never a problem. I drove 2 miles to my place of residence and decided to investagate. I looked up some information online to see if other people are having transmission problems with this type of vehicle and found that their is a common rupture at the base of the radiator that allows coolant to mix with the atf. I decided to drain some coolant and verify my assumption. I made a video of the processes and there was a good amount of atf in my coolant and then I proceeded to remove the transmission drain plug to extract a sample atf and sure enough a pinkish tint and very watery atf was extracted from the transmission .

48 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

Driving down the road and car started shuttering and over heated got out of car and there was milky trans fluid every were.

49 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

I bought a Nissan Xterra 06 in September 2013. It's now July 5 2014, not even a year after I bought it, and I'm having issues getting my car fixed. Something in the radiator busted and caused the coolant to leak into the transmission which means that I now need a new radiator and a new transmission which is going to cost roughly 5,100 dollars to fix in which I cannot afford. I purchased an extended warranty when I purchased my car so that if I had any major issues, like this, I would be covered financially bc anyone knows that car repairs can be quite costly. I was told that, zurich, my warranty company, would not pay for the repairs bc the problem came from the radiator and it's not covered in the warranty which leaves me to pay for the costly repairs. I believe that the dealership I got my car from should pay for the repairs as I havnt had it a whole year yet. I feel as if ive been skrewed over. Nissan also needs to issue a recall bc I'm not the only 06 Xterra owner to have this issue. Please help me, I have a 1 yr. Old daughter and I need my car fixed and don't have 5100 dollars to fix it myself. Thank you.

50 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

Transmission cooler ,located in radiator, cracked and allowed mixture of coolant and transmission fluid. This caused internal damage to transmission. Vehicle had power loss during a merge onto a state highway, nearly causing an accident and potential harm to my wife and 4 year old son. Nissan settled a class action lawsuit which clearly acknowledges there is a manufacture defect with the radiator. No safety recall was made which has the potential to injury others who experience this failure. Research has shown this is a large scale issue and settlement is unacceptable, Nissan has a responsibility where manufacturer defects can cause harm to their customers.

51 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

Car overheated while driving on the highway and wasn't able to accelerate any more. . . Took to the shop and they flushed the transmission multiple times to try and save. Radiator and hoses were replaced first. Ended up having to go back for a failed transmission. Costs were $5587. 25 which I couldn't afford and had to take out a loan for.

52 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2014

Radiator is leaking coolant into transmission.

53 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

Update to NHTSA id # 10587080. Filled out VIN incorrectly. Correct VIN is above.

54 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2014

Felt vibrating while driving. Stopped at a light and had no 1st gear after. I was told water got into the transmission. Called Nissan after doing research to find out this was a big problem. I was told tough luck pretty much. Nissan should recall all affected vehicles!!!.

55 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2014

The wheel hub assembly failed prematurely, left at 55000 and the right at 62000 miles.

56 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2014

While on a business trip away from home noticed the heater stopped blowing warm air. A few minutes later engine temperature spiked but then returned to normal. 50 miles later heater started working again. Took the car to a local mechanic and discovered transmission cooler within the radiator had failed, allowing the radiator coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. Paid for the replacement of the radiator/transmission cooler, system flush. Had the system flushed again 1 week after radiator replacement. Transmission now acting erratically, particular when shifting between 3rd and 4th gear. Initial assessments by mechanic suggests transmission and transmission computer require replacement. Cost of replacement exceeds the value of car even though the rest of the car is in excellent condition.

57 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

Driving south on the florida turnpike, our Nissan x-terra would not change speed at 40 miles per hour and it appeared that the transmission could not change. The slip indicator light went on. This situation happened approximately three times, after each incident we had to stop on the side of the highway. Finally after the third attempt the vehicle picked up speed. When we got home, I checked the transmission fluid and it had what appeared to be water. I checked the radiator cap, and instead of liquid the mixture seemed to be a creme paste, like it had oil. Searching in google, I found that there was a lawsuit brought again Nissan for this defect. However today at bill seidle's Nissan in miami, I was told that there is a CO-payment of $2,500. 00. This is outrageous, since the problem was created by Nissan and not by the owner of the vehicle.

58 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

As I was driving along the highway, I felt a jerk from the vehicle. The vehicle then over heated. Pulled over and let set for a minute. Restart and limp to work place. After calling dad found radiator fluid in transmission. The rest is history!!!!.

59 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2013

Financing and noticed the loud whining gears when car was cold. Almost like a after market racing tranny. Truck being quick and having a powerband it seems, I went with it!! we've had truck just over a year. 6 months ago, heater only blew heat when in motion. It still does both of these things but periodically the heat works like normal. Yes, this truck is still running!!!! but when I leave in the morning, it feels like the e brake is on when its not!! serious restriction. And on freeway, over 50 mph, grinding sound gets louder by the day. The loud vibrating that if windows are up, your head seemingly could explode!!!! all the same symptoms of coolant in the tranny. Best part is, it was sold to us by a dealership with symptoms obviously Nissan knows about. Heading down to trade it in for one over 2010!!! please make it there Xterra!!!! wow. It still gets up and goes tho. Red light with a new v8 titan, green means go, Xterra wins !!! sad day because we loved this truck. Buh bye baby.

60 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

The vehicle would stall or rather the transmission would not shift mostly out forth to fifth, or even third to forth. The engine seems fine. Pull the transmission dipstick, the fluid is dark and smells burnt.

61 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden my car would not accelerate. I tried to quickly merge to my right shoulder. I had plenty of gas and my car would not provide any power past the 2300 rpm. As I was merging, I noticed the car in the next lane behind me was approaching fast. I tried to accelerate and could not, he had to quickly move to the next lane and I think he hit another car. At this time I was already in the exit lane when I looked over, got lucky I wasn't hit hard and barely made it out of freeway.

62 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

I was coasting on the freeway at around 50 miles, was in low rpm about 2500. I hit the gas to change lanes and as soon as I did, I have no power to the back wheels. My engine rpm shot up and felt as if I was in the neutral. Eased off immediately and tried gassing it very lightly. I was able to make it off the freeway; however, I could not gas it past the 2500rpms . Very scary on the freeway, lucky I have great reflexes to avoid an accident. Took it into the shop and verified it is a leakage from the radiator to transmission problem.

63 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2013

Engine coolant started mixing with transmission fluid due to broken line from transmission to radiator. Now my car shutters when your push the accelerator and is having problems shifting gears. Jerks at times when it gets hotter. Company is doing nothing about it because it has over 100k miles even though they knew of the defect. This should be a recall diffently!!!!.

64 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

My Xterra experienced the dreaded " cracked radiator leaked into transmission" problem that many other Nissan trucks have experienced. It happened all of a sudden while driving through a parking lot, and the car down shifted and would no longer excel. Because it happened at a little over 92,000, I had to pay the $3000 deductible that was determined from the class action lawsuit earlier this year. That money covered a "reman" transmission (not even a new one) and hopefully a new radiator (it was not specified). The radiator should have been a recall from the get-go.

65 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

My 2006 Nissan Xterra's transmission has been significantly damaged due to the issue of contaminated transmission fluid / radiator fluid. It started to exhibit symptoms shortly after reaching 100,000 miles, which is just out of reach of the extended warranty.

66 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2013

Transmission was having hard time to engage, took it to jb automechanics in des plaines, ill to find out that transmission fluid is mixing with coolant on the radiator and had possible transmission damages.

67 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle came to a complete halt as all the warning lamps illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83,400 and the current mileage 83,487.

68 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

While driving our 2006 Nissan Xterra at speeds between 40 and 65 mph the vehicle started losing power and not shifting between gears correctly. At stop signs it would start out and rev high and then not shift again. The transmission stopped working while on the freeway. After letting it sit for a period of time the trainsmission would engage for a short time and stopped again. Finally had to have the vehicle towed how over 50 miles. Waiting until Monday (happen on a late Saturday) to get vehicle to family mechanic. Tried to speak to Nissan dealerships and got no help. We had the vehicle looked at by family mechanic at least twice before for the vehicle have symptoms of power loss and sluggish gear change and it was so intermitent that nothing could be detected in the past.

69 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning as smoke emerged from under the hood. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.

70 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

2006 Nissan Xterra with 95000 miles. Felt a vibration at 40 mph and after doing research online, took it in to have the transmission and radiator flushed. Found out that the radiator leaked coolant which found its way into the transmission and has all but destroyed it. Currently at the transmission shop looking at a $5k plus bill to replace the transmission and radiator. This has happened enough that the national transmission shop sells a package for Nissan vehicles to correct this issue. Not happy. Was recently considering buying a second Nissan but not anymore as they are failing to address this well documented issue.
