1 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2013 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

Very soft brake pedal observed progressively getting worse over period of about 15k / 1 month triggering increased braking distance especially during wet conditions and at higher speeds occasionally pedal goes almost to the floor prior to vehicle coming to complete stop. Hot pads/rotors observed during even cold and or wet conditions above normal until at highway speed brakes overheated triggering calipers to cease up at a stop at approx. 90k (3+ weeks after original observation of occasional soft pedal) at low speeds pedal appeared to be slightly soft, however at higher speeds above 35-40 upwards of 60-65 the issue became very noticeable especially during heavy rain or wet road conditions or if vehicle sat for more than a few hours. Issue with soft pedal started around 75k and continued until about 90k until calipers ceased on rotors as noted. Had I not exited and came to a stop vehicle could have locked up all 4 wheels at highway speeds causing serious injury. Shop diagnosed issue to be faulty hcu within the abs module manufactured by ate. A very similar issue with a recall noted already by Nissan in 16/18 select model vehicles where hcu can leak causing a short in the ecu triggering a fire but this issue is not observed or recognized on prior model year or vehicles nor does Nissan recognize that the hcu appears to be the root cause due to faulty seals. Final diagnosis: a faulty abs seal on one of the valves caused the piston to stick and the valve to remain in the open position reducing pressure that would normally go back into the main lines down to the calipers which in turn caused the soft pedal syndrome. The mil on the dash for the abs and traction control never turned on until after failure and cease up of calipers. Abs module manufactured by ate. Ford also notes a very similar problem with same manufactured abs modules by ate .

2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

Purchased in November of 2006 and in may 2008 as I was attempting to stop at a traffic light in the city only doing about 10 mph. The wheel jerked really funny and there was a noise coming from the brakes. Upon attempting to go my car wouldn't pick up speed and was making a rubbing noise. Limped into garage where they showed me my calipers were locked up. Had both calipers, brakes and rotors replaced. October 2009, driving at 55 mph, started smelling burnt rubber smell, check engine light came on so I pulled over to have it towed. Thought it was overheating even though gauge did not indicate that. Garage stated I needed a new brake line so had it replaced and on the way home I began smelling that horrible smell again so I decided to take to another garage where they showed me my caliper was locked up just enough to heat the rotor up. Had calipher and brakes replaced. April 2010, just from past experiences I knew what the rubbing noise and loss of power meant. Sure enough driver's side calipher was locked up. Had calipher, brakes and new brake hose put on. July 2011, yet again my caliper is locked up. So as I am typing this its back in for the usual. In almost every instance there were no warning signs of failure until it became extreme. I contacted Nissan but they stated its the usual wear and tear. I have never heard of replacing calipers every year under normal driving conditions.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/18/2010

On an '08 Nissan Xterra s with only 17,000 miles, the right front inner brake pad was completely worn down and made metal to metal contact with rotor, ruining the rotor. The vehicle was pulling badly to the right when the brakes were applied. Only the inner pads were affected, the outer brake pads looked like new, showing that the brake caliper was stuck on the bracket. Took to dealer and they told me that the 2 inner pads, left and right, were stuck in the bracket, which stops the caliper from floating or moving. At 17,000 miles this should not happen and is a potentially dangerous problem. Nissan has refused to repair under warranty and refuses to acknowledge that my invoice says "both inner pads stuck in calipers".

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

2003 Xterra brakes failed to stop causing consumer to run a red light. The first failure occurred on may, 21, 2004. The dealer informed the consumer that the brakes were worn, the right inner pad came out of holder from metal contact with the rotor causing caliper piston to jam into inside of right front rotor. The dealer replaced the front brake pads and rotors and right front calipers. The second failure occurred on April 15, 2005. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the did a complete brake fluid exchange to remove contaminant from brake lines. The consumer has since moved with no forwarding address. Updated 07/03/06.
