Oil is getting into the radiator and causing a gray gunk build up in radiator and possibly the engine. I have had the car less than a 1 1/2 years and I've already had to have the same issue fixed 3 × first time. The heater hose blew out caused an air bubble in the radiator which caused us to have to burp the radiator which is when we found it the first time had sent it to the mechanic. Had it flushed, had it fixed. It was fine or so we thought until about a month ago. Car overheats radiator fluid spews out everywhere. Fix the hose, add radiator fluid and start. The burping process again and out comes the gray gunk. Sent it back to mechanic had it flush had gaskets to the transmission cooler and oil cooler fixed. Mechanic cannot find how it's getting into radiator. Break pads wear prematurely due to calipers constantly sticking. Rust is everywhere on frame, suspension, shocks undercarriage and body. Vdc/slip light will come on while driving causing the car to stall at any speed. Fixed those sensors 2 times since I bought the car in December 2023 from a used car lot. State I I've in has no laws to protect people buying from used car lots but they do for new cars even though new cars come with warranties. Should be the other way around protect the people who can't afford the 30000 dollar cars. There's a reason we go to used car lots. Paid 4500 after taxes and registration and have put almost 5000 into it. Nissan is aware of the problem just not enough to deem a recall.

The vehicle disabled and the steering wheel locked on the highway once the speed hit 70mph. The wheel bearings are always rattling and if I go through a pothole the steering and tire feel really loose. The brake system doesn't feel right and has made a loud metal grind sound. The exhaust and or gasoline smell is way potent and not normal either it is strong smelling all the time. Potential recalls with fuel system, gasoline delivery, fuel pump and suspension, rear , gasoline storage , tank assembly, filler pipe and cap. All are potential recalls also the exterior lighting.

Leaf spring snapped. Large piece of metal was found in the road. Rear shocks were replaced under warranty several years prior. Known weak point of Xterras. Dealer replacement costs were astronomical so I upgraded the equipment for the same cost and did the work myself as I am now slightly out of warranty.

I had my brake boosters replaced on 05/22/2019. I was backing up slowly on 07/24/2020 in a parking lot of a convenience store. As I was backing up, I tried to apply the brakes and they became stiff. I tried to pump harder on the brakes and they would not stop the vehicle in which it was to late and my car collided into a utility pole.

Loses pressure on the brakes, the steering wheel is moving sideways.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Nissan Xterra. While operating the vehicle, the fuel gauge displayed false readings. The gauge showed that the fuel tank had less fuel than what was actually present. Also, on several occasions, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed and the vehicle did not immediately stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but no failures were found. Later, while driving, the vehicle stalled after depressing the brake pedal. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 73,000.
If you hit the brakes while it is raining or after going thru a puddle, the brakes will lock up. If you hit the brakes suddenly, they will lock up. I have had the vehicle for eight years and the problem has been constant.
My daughter had just purchased a 2005 Nissan Xterra, the day before her accident. She was traveling on a roadway approaching a curve in the road when the front right tire locked up causing the vehicle to pull slightly right and fail to respond to counter steer. The vehicle left the roadway and went into the grass began to spin sideways and struck a hydrant and flip 2. 5 times resting on its roof. I saw where there was several recalls, but when I enter the VIN its had no open recalls on the specific VIN. Although, this same exact problem has occurred in the same models.

On several occasions during the last year I've had issues with the break system of my Nissan Xterra. When using the breaks the anti lock break system (abs) wont work and the vehicle takes loner to stop. I have to press the breaks all the way to get the vehicle to stop. On several occasions I have taken the vehicle for repairs but no one can come up with a solution, including an authorized Nissan dealer repair shop.

Sudden loss of power while driving between 10-15 mph. Immediate loss of brakes, acceleration, and power steering. Vehicle was in motion on the 405 fwy/sepulveda pass area during morning rush hour in stop-go traffic conditions. Was able to pull to side of road, and shut off vehicle. Waited 1 minute and vehicle restarted with no further issues on drive to work. From a review of online resources this looks eerily similar to issue outlined in prior recall issued by NHTSA listed under ntb10-137. This is serious and dangerous, and could easily result in loss of life!.

Nissan Xterra has faulty abs actuator and is less than 10 years old. The vehicles abs, brake, slip, and vdc lights will come on while vehicle is in motion. The lights will go off and come back on periodically. After inspection at dealership, it was determined to be a bad abs actuator.
When the breaks is pressed in an emergency to stop it pushes the vehicle forward and does not stop when it should.
Unable to control speed and battery keeps dying even though battery and alternator test good. When driving at low speed I cannot accelerate gradually, the car revs really hard and pulls hard when trying to increase speed. Once I drive for about 20 minutes and pickup speed the brakes are loose and hard to come to a stop, and the pedal does not respond when accelerating or reducing speed. I recently was going home on the freeway at about 45 mph trying to reduce speed to prepare to exit, and my car just shut off, all dash lard light came on and I had to coast and then get a push from someone to get into the exit lane and coast to the gas station.
Nissan dealer told me that the radiator fluids started to leak into the transmission and now the transmission needs to be replaced and it will cost $8000 dollars to fix.
On 9/11/2016, while attempting to park my 2004 Nissan Xterra, there was a terrible accident. I pulled in front of a maechanics bay at firestone in newport news, va. While parking my SUV, with my foot firmly on the brake, the SUV rapidly accelatred and drove through the building and badly injured a mechanic standing in the bay. I was braking as hard as I could, and the SUV kept accelarting and would not stop. I did not have my foot on the gas pedal. At the time of this accidnet, the SUV was at a total stop while shifitng it into park. It was located in the parking lot of firestone on warwick blvd. In newport news, va. This vechile was in as new condition with only a litte over 12,000 miles. It was a total loss. There was damage to the building, antother vechile in the bay, the driver of the SUV, and severe inuries to the mechanic standing on the floor of the bay. Again, at no point , was the drivers foot on the gas pedal. The driver was braking throughout this incident and coud not stop the vechile. What is left of this vehicle is currently located in the geico lot on production drive in yorktown, virginia.

Upon slowing down for a red traffic light brake pedal got hard not allowing vehicle to stop and vehicle also starting rapidly accelerating without pressing the gas pedal. Resulted in a crash with a stopped vehicle at the traffic light. No serious injuries thankfully.
I purchased my first vehicle in January 2016 at kia depot of santa ana (now kia of orange). . And I feel it is a safety hazard. One month after I purchased the vehicle, I noticed battery corrosion. About a week later I was driving and there was a loud thud that forced me off the road on a busy street and I had to call a tow truck. Turns out the emergency break was completed rusted and crumbled away from the car - this was not the only thing that was rusted I discovered. The entire undercarriage of the car is totally covered and being eaten alive by rust - this car was sold to me, by kia, as a "as is" car - however, I refuse to let them hid behind that. Since I have bought this car, which was sold to me for a total of $12,592. 00,monthly payments of $285. 85- I found out that it was actually sitting in new york around the time of hurricane katrina - legally if its from a different state, they didn't have to disclose that to me & they didn't. So far I've had to get a new battery, new brakes, emergency brake is gone, new muffler, new sway bar, ac recharged, and just recently a piece of the leaf spring under the tire completely snapped off and broke in half while driving - these guys sold me a rusty nightmare and they have since closed up shop. Also the salesman padded my loan application and I just recently found out that is totally illegal - I do not want to wait until another piece of this thing falls apart on me again, I had my 7 year old niece in the car with me the first time when the emergency brake crumbled. I have left reviews and complaints - my next step is a attorney. . Read more...
Vehicle front brakes overheat. When driving downhill at any rate brakes will soften continuously until having to pull over for fear of safety. When brakes were checked by dealer they stated that they were at 75% and should be working fine. Every time I brake going down hill I feel softness in brakes. Brakes also will start to smell after braking downhill.
Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Nissan Xterra 4xe4. The contact stated that while driving at any speed, the steering stiffened and made a tapping noise when turned to the right. The contact stated that she had to start breaking from about 15 yards, in order to make a complete stop, at which time the break pedal was all the way to the floor. The contact also stated that the driver's side window would not roll up. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer but did not get any help with the estimated cost of repairs. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure mileage was 147,300. Fe.

These vehicles seem to have a safety flaw. When depressing the brake pedal the amount of travel is such that it is a common occurrence to depress the gas pedal at the same time causing the car to lurch forward. I have had two different Nissan dealers (henderson, nevada and boise, idaho) inspect my vehicle and was told in both cases there is nothing that can be done. . . Its the way the automobile was manufactured. During my last dealer inspection in boise, idaho the mechanic brought a new 2015 model into the garage and put the two cars side by side. The difference in brake pedal travel was approximately 1/8 of an inch, so the problem has evidently never been addressed by the manufacturer. Today, my vehicle lurched forward when braking because the gas pedal was depressed while braking. It is paramount that one's foot is centered on the brake pedal; if your foot is off to the right side just a little, the gas pedal will be depressed while braking causing an unsafe situation. I have had many very close calls because of this issue.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the brake pedal went to the floor without any warning. The contact had to cautiously maneuver the brake pedal to release for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for further inspection and diagnosis. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 07e105000 (service brakes, air) and 07v528000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000. Pam.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while attempting to stop, the traction control, abs, and vdc warning lights illuminated. The contact mentioned that there was pulsation when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 111,000.
I started the car to let it warm up. The manual gearshift was in neutral and the emergency brake was engaged. As I got out of the vehicle, it lurched forward and I attempted to get back into the vehicle to apply the brake. It lurched a second time before I was able to get inside. I attempted to get inside the vehicle a second time to apply the brake but was not able to due to the car lurching forward again. . On the third "lurch" it continued to drive forward, hitting my mother's parked car and pushing it back approximately 3-4 feet into the back wall of her carport. Finally, the engine died and I was able to restart it, back it away from my mother's car, and assess the damage to her vehicle and my body. I purchased this used vehicle 12 days ago.
I was driving along a slightly snow covered road with a little bit of ice. My speed was low about 15-20 miles per hour. The car stared sliding sideways toward another car heading toward me. My four-wheeled drive was engaged while driving. I managed to steer the car out of the way of the other car but I could not gain control of my vehicle. The brakes did not help and the steering would not respond. I traveled at least 80 feet hitting trees and bushes until a set of trees stopped my car. The crash totaled my car.

I was going aprox. 15 mph on a straight way off of a dirt road and started to slow down before approaching a stop sign a little way from it , applied the brake like normal, when I heard my engine sound like the accelerator was being romped on, and realized it was in fact speeding up rapidly. I then started thinking fast, put my other foot on the brake too and pulled up the emergency brake. I knew I couldn't make the turn at the stop sign onto a hwy. I woke up after being unconscious for around three hrs. Due to several injuries caused by the airbag that apparently inflated at the first large tree impact. Proceeding to hit several others before it came to a stop and alot of shaking around and fortunately I had my seat belt on or otherwise would have been ejected thru the windshield on the last impact for sure hitting the largest tree of all, stopping me from entering into a creek about 5 feet away, when I was taken to the site the next day I still didn't realize just what happened, and could only remember that sound of the engine revving so loud while I was trying to slow down seeing the stop sign a ways up ahead and then realizing the vehicle did not want to slow down and was trying to accelerate more as I then was holding both feet on the brake and had pulled the emergency brake and knowing I would not be able to make that turn without rolling and was no where to go but straight if I couldn't get it to stop, and at that time it was going way faster than I was originally going quite a way before the stop sign only maybe 15mph when I applied the brakes as usual but it failed like others I have researched have done. There should have been a recall on this a long time ago , but Nissan has lost their honesty and blew off their responsibilities over very , very many probable failures that should have major alerts and recalls for the safety of human lives.
And noise was heard like two metal piece hitting against each other the driver stopped did an inspection didn't see any visual signs got back into the vehicle, traveled about 8 to 10 miles. Then while going over a hill the brakes pedal went down to the floor, unable to stop the truck it picked up speed slamming it to the back of a van causing the truck to rollover. I driver sustained and shatter kneel cap and broken ribs.
My vehicle has degraded braking performance. I investigated and discovered gear-oil leaking from rear axle onto break rotors. Further investigation reveals this is an epidemic. Nhtsa item number 10033306 indicates that this is a recurring problem for 2007 Nissan Xterra. Increased stopping distance and degraded breaking performance has probably contributed to numerous accidents already. It may have already resulted in fatalities. As a registered professional engineer, I urge you to initiate a recall of all vehicles prone to this defect. It can be eliminated by simply replacing defective rear-axle seals.
The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the brakes were applied and the anti lock braking system was engaged. The anti lock braking light also illuminated on the instrument panel during the failure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where they were unable to diagnose a failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure continued to occur whenever the brakes were engaged. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the brakes would lock abnormally whenever attempting to brake with the four wheel drive activated. The failure would also occur when driving in wet or inclement weather with the four wheel drive activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 75,000.
I recently purchased a 2000 Nissan Xterra. While I seldom use the emergency brakes, I needed it for parking on a hill that particular day. I discovered that the brakes did not grab as they should. Upon investigation, it was determined that a pulley within the brake drum assembly was seized. The materials of the pin and pulley did not appear to have any corrosion or abnormal damage. I have since learned that there are quite a few other people on the internet who have experienced this issue. As a matter of fact the dealership was on back order for the entire rear brake assembly with a one month lead time (p/n: 44000-7z2000, 44010-7z200). I have also written to Nissan with no response. I strongly feel that this is the result of a design error by Nissan where the parts seize over time. Because this is a safety related device, it should be investigated and addressed. My truck is currently at the dealership for repair and I have requested for the defective parts to be saved as reference.
Steering inputs very slower to respond, huge noise, could not make turn easily, it is happening every year since 2008 even after I serviced the vehicle and changed the parts, previously problem started with u- turns and now wide turns, left and right turns also. Following it-up with Nissan consumer affairs since July 2009 ( file # 6541095 and [intr #1358858] ), they did not take it seriously and closing the case, now I got a recall notice about my steering input issue released by Nissan, however I feel this model or my particular vehicle is giving problems on turns and uncertain about braking condition. Last time dealer warned me that vehicle is in bad condition how could I managed to drive to his shop. Problem started again with noise and turns, suggest me what should be done, I will keep the vehicle in same condition until that time. Some times when I'm turning on left hand side I feel like complete vehicle weight on my left hand and chest causing pains.
2003 Nissan Xterra developed problems with the brakes, headlights and tail lights. When the consumer attempted to apply the brakes, the vehicle did not stop.
I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra that had brake squeals since about 9000 miles. I have repeatedly taken it to the dealer to have the problem fixed/inspected. I was told that the squeal is a result of the type of brakes and that they were just cold. The problem is that the brakes squeal all the time. I was then told on another visit that it was the drive belt and not the brakes. After this service the squeal was still there. I took it back yet again and they did another brake inspection and said that when I do my brakes they will have to spin the rotors and this should fix this. The problem I have is that I shouldn't have to pay for this fix since it's been on going for almost a year.
