Nissan Xterra owners have reported 8 problems related to car will not start (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Xterra based on all problems reported for the Xterra.
Car failed to start after being parked overnight. Would crank but not start. Had it diagnosed and the fuel sending unit replaced. The dead unit had a hole through it's plastic which showed a corroded electrical tab. It doesn't look like corrosion from a crack in the plastic as stated in campaign# 04v230000, but more like the electrical connection melted through the plastic, which then allowed corrosion. Nissan hotline told me that the previous owner had the recall taken care of already, but couldn't say if the unit was repaired or replaced.

When outside temperature falls below 40 degrees Xterra will not start. Vehicle is stationary and not parked in a garage. Battery was replaced 11 months ago trying to fix the same problem. No other major issues with vehicle ever. Vehicle just towed yesterday dealer will not be able to diagnose until Monday.

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that during cold temperatures, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic where it was diagnosed that the emc module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000. Ss.
The first time I noticed something wrong with the transmission, the vehicle would make a large vibrating sound at random times. This would keep getting worse until I had to bring it to a shop, overall just about a week. I was told the transmission and radiator fluids were mixing and that I needed a fluid flush a long with a new radiator. About 6 months later, my car just wouldn't start one morning. I take it to the shop again, hoping it is just a minor fix this time. This time there is something wrong with the transmission and computer system. Luckily I wasn't driving when this happened, otherwise who knows what damage it would have caused to the car or to me.

I was driving my car and it shifted into 4 wheel drive at a red light with no prompting. The car then was immediately pulled over and turned off. The car would not start following it being turned off. It was then towed to a mechanic shop where they discovered that the radiator had leaked fluid into the transmission, causing the coolant to mix with the transmission fluid and completely disabling the car.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. While parked, the contact attempted to start the vehicle but the engine would not start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician stated that the radiator and transmission would have to be replaced due to coolant from the radiator leaking into the transmission, causing an electrical shortage. There was an investigation under NHTSA action number: dp12004 (power train:automatic transmission:cooling unit and lines power train:automatic transmission:torque converter power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)) that could have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 104,324. Kmj.

*** ipdm and double catalytic converter failure in 2005 Nissan Xterra *** my 2005 Nissan Xterra engine once shut down as I am driving on a busy street; I had to let the Xterra coast a short distance without power to pull over and stop my SUV to the side of a safer section of the road. I could not immediately restart the car. After waiting about 15 minutes, I was eventually able to restart and drive the SUV. The problem, however never went away. Periodically the engine will shut off without warning. It finally got to the point where the car would not start at all. I had to have the car towed twice, including a tow to a Nissan dealership in santa monica. The incident began in April 2010. In may 2010, the Nissan dealer in santa monica checked the problem and indicated that the ipdm had to be replaced. This was an expensive repair. Shortly after the ipdm was replaced, 1 of 2 catalytic converters in the Xterra failed and had to be replaced. 6 months later (December 2010), the other catalytic converter failed. I believe the ipdm issue is severe. I believe the ipdm issue is also associated with (and likely to be the cause of) the failure of catalytic converters in the vehicle. In my case, it is double failure since both catalytic converters failed 6 months apart from each other. Failure of the catalytic converter is an environmental concern.
Problems with the car starting. First problem car died just after starting. Odometer trip and a @ b had been set back to zero and car stereo presets all erased. Next morning car would not start. Waited an hour, car started. Took in they adjusted the idle. The car was fine otherwise. This was just over one month ago. Yesterday went to leave work car wouldn't start. No power then I got the radio to work. They got the car started, then shut off to see if the problem was still there. It was. Wouldn't start. Called towing, but after banging on my steering wheel, car would start. I drove to Nissan who now after 9 hours three technicians can find nothing wrong and they say you can come pick up your vehicle. Unless they witness the problem there is nothing they can do. Said next time leave it alone and call them and they will have it towed. This Nissan has only been service through the dealer.
