Failure Date: 10/15/2021

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact that while stopped at a traffic light the vehicle stalled. The contact was immediately able to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle kept stalling. The contact restarted the vehicle however while entering a parking garage the vehicle stalled again. After several attempts the vehicle restarted. The contact emphasized that the failure was most evident while stopped or driving at slower speeds. On one occasion the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The contact connected a dtc scanner and retrieved a fault code regarding the fuel gauge sensor that was contacted to the submersible fuel pump. The contact stated that after removing the fuel tank from the vehicle and while changing the internal fuel tank submersible fuel pump, he became aware that the positive wire of the wiring harness on top of the fuel pump and the fuel pump housing above were both charred. The contact was concerned that excessive heating and sparking had caused the failure. The contact purchased a new fuel pump to replace the defective one. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

When driving my Xterra, it loses power and cuts out on me. This is very dangerous and cuts completely off when I'm accelerating. There is a declaration and then the vehicle won't crank or start leaving me stranded. This is not the first time over years that the Xterra has cut off on me. All dashboard systems stop completely when it happens. I have no control over the car when it happens.

Immediately after I exited my building garage and made right turn on city street on a clear summer day afternoon the engine sound began roaring and vehicle suddenly accelerating. I tried to control the vehicle forcibly hitting on the brakes, shifting gears to neutral, turning off the engine but the vehicle kept on going and ran-away uncontrollably till I made two left turns and ended up on a side walk with the rear tire blown out and the car stopped after colliding with some public utility box. The vehicle has incomplete recall #r0402 and nhsta recall #04v-230 regarding the fuel sending unit. There was a local police report #200057082. Suspected causes could be flaws in the vehicle electronic throttle control system that produced faulty signal of fully depressed accelerator pedal.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

Intermittent stalling issue. Vehicle has 98,700 miles on it and has not had any other issues prior to this. On the first occasion the vehicle was in motion, going between 5 and 10 mph, turning into a parking lot. The vehicle start to slow down, lost power steering and all dashboard lights were illuminated (check engine, battery, airbag, seatbelt, etc. ) but the radio and headlights remained on. Placed the vehicle in park and turned the key in the off position. Restarted the vehicle and it started up immediately with no dashboard warning lights. Was drivable with no other issues for several days. The vehicle stalled a second time about a week or so later, while it was stationary, at a stop light on a city street. Again, all the dashboard lights illuminated while the radio and headlights remained on. Turned the key to the off position and attempted to restart the vehicle. The vehicle started with no problems and no dashboard warning lights. The vehicle was operational and was able to drive home with no issues. I took it to a trusted mechanic after both intermittent stalls. He ran diagnosis tests after both incidents and no codes showed up. The mechanic believes it is the ecm relay that is causing the issue after doing some research. A new battery was installed between stalls thinking this was the culprit. The second stall occurred the day after the new battery install.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/19/2019

Fuel gauge registering improperly. Only shows 3/4 tank upon filling tank full and will not drop upon usage of fuel. Gauge has only dropped once since I have owned the vehicle.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/09/2019

Total transmission and radiator failure. A dealership "fixed" the coolant contamination problem when Nissan offered the warrantied coverage for what's known as smod. All the dealership did was flush the transmission and radiator. They did not repair or replace any components even after being berated by my husband to do so and to do it under the covered warranty. ($5k for tranny replacement that we couldn't afford) they claimed the flush had fixed the Xterra. Less than 3,000 miles later I was driving on the highway with my 2 children in the car and the vehicle just shut off. No warning lights or behaviors just shut off at 70+mph on the highway. While sitting broke down [pulled off highway edge as far as I could after vehicle died and before it coasted to a complete stop] we were then rear-ended and my 2 kids spent 2 days being monitored in a children's hospital. 1 of which had a concussion. Although the Xterra only needed a new rear hatch and bumper and etc insurance didn't consider it totalled so it was cosmetically repaired. After reaching out to Nissan about the incident they refused to even offer us any sort of discounted repair costs on tranny replacement[car was still under extended coverage warranty] nor would they offer any kind of anything regarding a discount on a replacement vehicle. So here we were still paying on a car loan for a car that was still under warranty, but could not be drove. Or even starred for that matter. It ended up wrecking us financially. The car never showed any signs of any mechanical problems prior to dealer flushing trans. The car didn't show any signs of anything afterwards until that day on the highway. The problem ended up being metal pieces from coolant contamination shorted out something in transmission and I guess shorted so strong that it blew the trans fuse and blew fuse links on positive terminal which caused car to just shut off. Nissan needs to take responsibility for their bullcrap.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/08/2019

While driving, the vehicle surges and sputters and rpms skyrocket and the vehicle loses power and shuts down. This happens at various speeds on interstate highway, town streets and county roads. The vehicle will also lose power and shut down while idling at a stop sign or traffic light. There is no way to steer or restart when this happens and I have depended on hazard flashers to warn other drivers of disabled vehicle until I can get assistance to get vehicle off of highway. After 20 minutes of being dead, vehicle will sometimes restart and go a few more miles before same thing happens again. After 3 weeks at a dealership and a cost so far of $3,000, the problem has not been pinpointed and fixed. Dealership has contacted Nissan customer service who has two open cases of the same issue with the same model vehicle. I have found numerous other complaints in online forums of the same issue same model and still no fix found for the issue. I have now opened my own case with Nissan north America customer care and am awaiting further investigation from them. Major safety hazard.

At roughly 1/4 tank remaining on the indicator, the vehicle took 14. 7 gallons of gas, which means it was nearly empty. There is a recall for this problem that Nissan claims does not affect this vehicle, as identified by the VIN reported above. Clearly this is the issue addressed by campaingn id pc 042/NHTSA # 10v-075. Nissan denies this.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/07/2018

Sudden loss of power while driving between 10-15 mph. Immediate loss of brakes, acceleration, and power steering. Vehicle was in motion on the 405 fwy/sepulveda pass area during morning rush hour in stop-go traffic conditions. Was able to pull to side of road, and shut off vehicle. Waited 1 minute and vehicle restarted with no further issues on drive to work. From a review of online resources this looks eerily similar to issue outlined in prior recall issued by NHTSA listed under ntb10-137. This is serious and dangerous, and could easily result in loss of life!.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/18/2018

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the gas gauge stopped working on the dashboard then the check engine light started flashing. On 6/12/2018 pulled into my garage at home and on turning engine off saw electrical spark under hood and SUV went up in flames. Fire department report available.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/22/2018

2004 Xterra had been low on radiator fluid and needed topping up each week, then each day. After filling with water and coolant night before car began to overheat on hwy. Car sat in sun all day, then overheated in traffic. Had towed to work on it. Replaced split radiator hose where dripping occurs and refilled car radiator, no leaking apparent. Next day, drove on hwy to work. At 65-75 mph car began making clicking/tapping noises from engine. Went uphill towards interchange and car shook violently, steam (or smoke) came from under hood as I carefully crossed freeway to exit, all lights came on on dash and smoke or steam poured into the car through air vents. I had lost all power and power steering, but I steered it safely to hwy service road street with parking lot. Car was smoking under hood, steam or smoke was coming out of vents and all lights remained on on the dash. Under the hood, the a/c condenser or radiator has a 5" break on top of it. When I put water in the radiator it pours through several places where hoses connect (gaskets and seals, I presume). Had the car towed home and I'm afraid to drive it ever again, but now I can't get to work or pick my kids up from school anymore and I can't afford to fix it or pay for repairs since I can't get to work.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Car just shut off in traffic loosing all power and braking causing me to crash into the back of a stopped car at a red-light. After inspection from a mechanic shop, they informed me that something in the computer had fried causing the car to shut off, and it had also caused the transmission control unit module to go bad making the car not drive able.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

Check engine light came. Gas gauge reads empty even after you fill it up completely. Diagnostic code p0463, fuel level sensor. The fuel gauge does not accurately state the amount of fuel in the tank. This issue is known to Nissan and NHTSA. It is a safety issue as you never know how much gas is left in the tank or how many miles you can go. This was previously recalled for certain 2006, 2007 and 2008 Xterras. Not sure why it hasn't been for the 2005 model year as it is the same issue.

26 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/01/2017

Noticed shuddering at first, then a stumbling upon hitting gas 120000 miles took truck in and had ext. Cooler put on, flushed out tranny fluid, new radiator, new gaskets and filters in tranny $1,100. 00 job. 1 month later service engine soon light came on and truck wouldn't start. Tcm module in tranny started blowing fuse, truck smelled like it was burning up and wouldn't allow truck to start. 2,000. 00 to replace module and secondary breach. Its not just in radiator, there is another breach problem that puts the transmission and coolant together. 2nd breach. Shop wont guarantee 2000. 00 job, new transmission 5800. 00. My beautiful truck left on a flatbed to salvage yard. Single mom of 4. Thanks Nissan, you suck. Also issues with airbag coil. 600. 00 for that. Nissan I love my Xterra and its so sad we had to part ways today, I watched my 18000. 00 vehicle leave with no justice but tears and hoping the zero degree weather breaks, walking the kids to school, one with disabilities is just rotten. Nissan get a conscience. Because my Xterra sat on a dealerships used lot, no one was notified of class action and warranty issued. I got doubled f**cked.

33 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/26/2016

Recently check engine light came on and had it diagnosed as the fuel gauge sensor. After filling gas tank with gas now gauge stays below empty and low gas light and check engine light stay on. Dealer said an extended warranty had expired and mileage had also been extended to 72000 miles. I just hit 80000 miles. The dealer wants $550 to fix. Way too much for a known default.

34 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/05/2015

I purchased a 2005 Nissan Xterra . The vehicle's transmission is gone due to a fault in the manufacturing. This could have been a potentially dangerous situation - but luckily for me I was not driving or on the highway. I have contacted Nissan regarding this issue and was told that they are not going to assist me in repairing the problem because the vehicle warranty has run out. I bought this vehicle used - the dealer never mentioned anything about a recall or problem at the time that could be fixed by Nissan nor did I receive any correspondence from Nissan themselves. Now I am stuck with the financial burden of $5000 for the repair. I don't think this is fair - the used car dealers should be mandated by law to fix vehicles with recalls and inform car buyers that there is a manufacturing defect. Nissan also should be held accountable.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated and the brake lights failed. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,000.
