Nissan Xterra owners have reported 5 problems related to rear suspension springs (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Xterra based on all problems reported for the Xterra.
This vehicle was never heavily loaded and was always driven on paved roads. The bottom leaf in each of the rear leaf springs broke within one year of one another. The first time I noticed the broken leaf and had it repaired before the broken piece of leaf could come out of the assembly. The second time the broken piece of leaf came out of the assembly while the vehicle was travelling straight on a paved city street. The broken piece must have hit the tire because it flew up and struck the bottom of the vehicle. This could potentially cause a tire to blow out, hit another vehicle, or hit a pedestrian. The broken piece of leaf was 13. 5 inches long and weighed about 2. 5 pounds - certainly dangerous if it hit a pedestrian. The picture shows the leaf assembly with the broken piece of the bottom (I. E. , third) leaf re-inserted and slightly rotated toward the tire as it may have appeared before the piece came out of the leaf spring assembly.

Passenger side rear leaf spring broke while driving on the freeway, almost puncturing gas tank according to the mechanic. The driver's side rear leaf spring broke while driving on city streets. I was advised by my mechanic that this was definitely an item that should not have failed and it is most likely due to defective part, as the metal layered leaf spring should not break. The mechanic advised that since the vehicle is not one that is driven in a manner of off roading, that the failed leaf spring was defective and something that should be investigated by the authorities perhaps, as a recall item. He advised that I should file a complaint and I have reviewed this site to determine that many others have had issue with the leaf springs breaking. Please investigate. Thank you.

The rear of my '06 Xterra bottoms out very easily. This has been a problem since day one. The dealer saw the problem and replaced the rear shocks, but that did not solve the problem. It appears that the leaf springs on the truck are weak (according to many online sources). My Xterra is now 3,000 miles out of warranty.

2006 Xterra. Bought new, after one year of ownership had four people in it and rear bottom out. Has done this many times. Dealership first said it was only mine , no other complaints from no one else, then replaced shocks , rear leaf springs. Had them drive others on lot and all did the same thing. Nissan sent out a dealer rep, only to say I hit the dip in the road to fast. This is not only a cover up from a bad design from Nissan, but it is a safety issue to at 65 miles an hour and you bottom out you could loose control. Are you going to be able to stop the SUV when the shock mounts break and or the leaf springs break, how about after many times of the impact on the axel do to the bump stops hitting it are the axles going to have problems?.
