4 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

The metal tubes that separate engine coolant from the transmission fluid crack. Coolant and transmission fluid mixes and cause the transmission to fail. The substance is milky, and cloudy like a milk shake. Car was in motion on the city we were coming from the store.

5 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/17/2019

Radiator defect caused transmission failure.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/10/2019

I bought a used 2006 Xterra and I had no idea that the transmission coolers fail prematurely. All seemed ok for 2 weeks. One day driving back from dropping my 2 daughters off at their mothers house, I was on an incline, in a blind curve, and the vehicle stopped pulling completely. While stopped I tried to check the trans fluid and was almost ran over by a tractor and trailer because he couldnt see through the curve to know I was broke down in the road. Then 10 minutes or so goes by and a minivan comes around the curve and had to lock his brakes up to keep from running into me. I was almost hit 2 times in a matter of 20 - 30 minutes waiting for help to arrive.

7 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/10/2018

Transmission cooler inside radiator failed, causing antifreeze to mix with transmission fluid. Causing the transmission to fail. At 91,000 miles.

8 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/11/2018

Radiator design failure allowed mixing of antifreeze with automatic transmission fluid. Caused failure of both radiator and transmission. Nissan previously offered assistance in repair but discontinued. Will not repair my Xterra as is now past extended warranty, but well under total miles. Overheating in traffic stop lead to failure. Nissan should have recalled all 2005-2007 Xterras and frontiers with defective radiator. Nissan took no action to notify owners that has not had repair. Nissan only notified owners that had experienced failure and offered to compensate costs. Failure was preventable with a fairly simple by pass of the transmission cooler or a replacement of the radiator to a redesigned version Nissan issued in 2010. Many owners were helped by Nissan previously because of a class action lawsuit. Now, Nissan is no longer assisting owners with the failure even though it is still caused by the design failure of the radiator and not any action by the owner. If the owner had driven the vehicle harder and added more miles faster and experienced the failure, Nissan would have compensated them I. Whole or in part. Owners with low mileage and older vechicles that are now experiencing the failure or will in the future are not being assisted by Nissan. Nissan should have done a complete recall of all vechicles with the defective radiator. Owners are now forced to bear costs of $7,000 in repairs. A transmission failure can be a serious safety hazard if the transmission were to lock up while driving. Fortunately my transmission failure occurred slowly and the radiator failure was catastrophic so the vechicle could not be driven. Nissan should be made to supplement their prior extended warranty to cover any failure of the radiator causing contamination of the transmission fluid. Failure is referred to as strawberry milkshake of death.

10 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/15/2017

Loss of power due to leak of the radiator to the transmission, follow by transmission failure. The vehicle runs in one gear and the dealer suggested changing the transmission for $4,000 are they crazy. . . . . . . . . . 2007 Nissan Xterra with low miles 89,000 one owner. I am never buying Nissan again.

11 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/30/2017

Lack of recall for the transmission failure. The transmission does shift from park to neutral to reverse and then drive but once in drive it stays in a lower gear like 1st. While driving on a city street all of the sudden I noticed that the vehicle was making a sound as if it were not shifting to a higher gear. I then noticed that the check engine light came on. We took the vehicle to a repair shop and they checked the engine code and they said it was a transmission issue and that we needed to take it to a transmission shop. We took it to a transmission shop and they said that the codes is for transmission failure. Repair cost will be about 5000.

12 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

While driving on the highway the transmission failed. No warning, just check engine light and the transmission wouldn't go above 30 miles per hour without cutting off the car completely. Had to be towed. After troubleshooting problem the radiator on transmission failed. Come issue for this vehicle, just as noted in the safety recall a few years ago but Nissan is no longer supporting their customers for this safety issue. Well, after $3700, my transmission is rebuilt with new radiator. Nissan should have covered this safety issue. . I was in traffic on a highway and the transmission failed, it was very stressful and unsafe for me to change lanes and pull over on a highway that has a 70 mph limit and I was in the middle lane. Even though I put my flasher on traffic was very heavy and it was truly unsafe for not only myself but my passengers and those cars behind me that had to suddenly slow down because of my mechanical transmission failure.

13 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

Transmission failed while vehicle was moving. Research shows that transmission failure is due to a design flaw where engine coolant can leak into the transmission.

14 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/20/2017

Total transmission failure caused by a cracked radiator that allowed engine coolant to mix with transmission fluid. Cost to fix is more than the value of the vehicle. The defective radiator has no recall on it although the problem is well known to Nissan.

15 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/19/2017

While on a camping trip from California to nebraska to watch the eclipse, my Xterra suddenly and without any warning (no warning lights) lost power and came to a complete stop in an intersection near aliance, ne. We were driving the speed limit but could easily have been in an accident if this had been a more populated area. We were able to "coast" it off the highway into a parking area and arrange for a tow truck to pick us up. The nearest Nissan dealer is 500mi. Away in denver so had my vehicle towed to aaa recommended shop. They diagnosed transmission failure due to radiator crack and unit sending coolant into the transmission. My vehicle has less 98k mi. On it. ! estimated cost of repairs $3-8,000. 00. To complete repairs they would have to have parts sent from California, so they advised me junk the vehicle or tow back to California. Since I'm a senior living on fixed income I do not have funds to purchase another vehicle. So I had to rent a car ($800. 00) to get back to California and have the Xterra transported ($1,100. 00) back to be repaired. Think it is shameful that there was no notice from Nissan about this so consumers could take preventative measures. I have been a loyal customer, this is the second Nissan product I've owned, but now because Nissan is not standing behind its product, even after the repairs I will have a "worthless" vehicle that I have had to put thousands of dollars into. . So this will be my last purchase from this company.

16 Transmission Failure problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/15/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Nissan Xterra. The contact received an unknown manufacturer recall notification. The vehicle was taken to bill robertson Nissan (928 n 28th Ave, pasco, wa 99301, (509) 545-3000) where the contact was provided a rental. The contact then received a call from the dealer stating that the parts were not available for the recall repair and he needed to return the rental. Two weeks later, while driving, the transmission failed and the radiator overheated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission and radiator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle had to be repaired at a Nissan dealer rather than an independent mechanic. The contact was provided case number: 29163686. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

Catastrophic transmission failure due to radiator defect (coolantt contamination).

22 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/09/2016

Coolant contamination in the transmission causing engine failure and transmission failure. Also blows fuses and car will not start. Was sitting at a red light when it turned green and I accelerated the car would not go. When I got to a safe place to turn it off it would not turn back on. Upon further investigation I am one of many that have complained about this and Nissan has yet to recall this issue. I was lucky to be at a red light and not driving on the interstate. Also this is my 16 year olds car and thank goodness she wasn't driving it when it happened. The car was purchased less than a month. Ago with 133000 miles on it and was running great until today. This issue could be very dangerous and should be taken care of by the manufacturer.

23 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/08/2016

Radiator coolant leaking into automatic transmission causing transmission failure. Started noticing issue around 136k at highway speed. I hear there was a class action lawsuit but the settlement is unacceptable. Nissan needs to step up and take responsibility for their design failure.

24 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/23/2016

The coolant leaked into the transmission, causing the transmission to fail. Vehicle was in motion on a highway. *recall transmission failure*.

25 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/13/2016

I have transmission fluid in my anti freeze and anti freeze in my transmission. Im told by a mechanic that this is a known Nissan issue. Apparently something in the radiator rots and the fluids mix causing transmission failure. Mine hasn't failed yet, but my fluids are all contaminated as is the radiator and tranny?.

26 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving 25 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

27 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/01/2016

Well known problem with the radiator coolant leaking into the transmission lines and thus into the transmission. Simple, inexpensive fix to replace the faulty radiator was not communicated to me and now it's too late to save the transmission. Nissan got away with murder and caused thousands of people money that they should not have had to pay for defective parts. These parts should have been recalled as they cause a major safety hazard while driving. Having your transmission fail on you while you're driving is a major safety concern. But because not enough people actually died from it a recall was not required.

28 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle failed to shift into third gear and the vehicle decelerated. The check engine light illuminated. The dealer diagnosed that the coolant was leaking into the transmission and the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

29 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

(fe dealer info inadequate) tl the contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. While driving approximately 35 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle did not respond. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer (hasbrouck heights in hasbrouck, NJ) where it was diagnosed that the radiator leaked and caused the transmission to fail. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

30 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/29/2016

Transmission failure (atf contamination). Odi received a petition requesting investigation of transmission damage attributed to contamination by engine coolant. The source of the contamination is a cracked atf line that runs through an engine coolant chamber in the radiator.

31 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/29/2016

My vehicle was driving perfectly without any issues at all until one day on the way home I stopped at a stop sign near my home. Then as I started to proceed down the city street the check engine light and 4wd lights came on in the dash and the vehicle would barely move. I just barely got it into the driveway of my home. After I turned it off I attempted to restart the vehicle it would not even attempt to turn over. I checked online to see what would cause these symptoms to find that hundreds upon thousands of other Nissan owners have had the same happen to them. It is a known issue of cross contamination of radiator fluid and transmission fluid due to a faulty design in the radiator. I had a mechanic check my engine as well and he confirmed that the grey sludge in the radiator and grit in my transmission fluid fit the symptoms of this issue. Now I am being told I have to pay over $5000. 00 to have repairs done because of a design flaw that Nissan refuses to take full responsibility for. I am lucky that this failure happened in my neighborhood versus the interstate or it could have not only left me with figuring out how to come up with $5000. 00 but how to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars for repair bills to other cars I might have caused to wreck do to this catastrophic transmission failure.

32 Transmission Failure problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/12/2016

Transmission failure. I purchased this vehicle with 75,000 miles in October 2015. At 84,000 miles, I noticed a clunk and vehicle slowed all the way down when the automatic transmission was shifting into drive at about 45 miles an hour. I was driving in rush hour traffic and the vehicle slowed way down even though I was trying to accelerate. I was nearly reareneded due to the sudden stall due to the transmission. I took it to the Nissan dealership only to find out that the transmission was contaminated with radiator fluids. There's was a deductible of $3,000, what a savings (sarcasm). It was explained that it was a known problem. How could I be responsible for something that easily could have been prevented, especially if nissa knew about this very common problem. Nissan really has let me down. I will never buy another Nissan unless I am reimbursed for most of whati paid. I am also extremely upset that I very easily could have been in a serious accident due to the sudden failure of the transmission, especially as I was trying to accelerate when just entering the interstate where the speed limit was 70 mph and I suddenly slowed down due to the failing transmission.

33 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

Was having trouble with transmission on 07 Nissan Xterra. Found a lawsuit that had been settled with Nissan involving factory defects of the radiator oil cooler which leaks into transmission and destroys transmission. Took an oil sample from my vehicle to an independent company and was told that their was antifreeze in the oil. Took my vehicle and the oil sample into Nissan so that my transmission could be replaced. ($2500 cost to me per the Nissan lawsuit settlement) service department called back and tried to tell me that without dropping the transmission that they could tell that the antifreeze was not the cause of my failed transmission. After further discussion with the service manager who admitted that they couldn't tell what caused the failure of my transmission and that my oil sample proved that the factory defect was the most likely cause of my transmission failure, he then proceeded to explain that they had to follow Nissan procedure which was a visual inspection. My oil sample trumped their visual inspection but they still refused to fix my vehicle even under the laws of the Nissan settlement which was supposed to cover my vehicle. I first started having problems while driving, my Xterra almost doesn't even run now and is definitely not road safe any more yet Nissan still won't fix it.

34 Transmission Failure problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/08/2016

Complete transmission failure without warning. Going 70 miles per hour down interstate. . . During rush hr surrounded by 18 wheelers. . . Putting my wife's life in danger. . . . This is obviously a safety recall issue. . . . Thanks.

35 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/16/2016

2005 Nissan Xterra - complete transmission failure at approx. 102,000 miles, caused by faulty radiator that leaked water into the transmission, which Nissan knew about but refused to recall. I never received any notice about the radiator issue from the manufacturer or dealer!! it would cost approx. $300 for Nissan (or the consumer) to replace the radiator, as opposed to $3800 to completely rebuild the transmission and replace the radiator upon failure; therefore, Nissan let their customers drive dangerous vehicles in which the transmission could - and did - fail at any moment. This is an extremely dangerous situation. I was in rush hour traffic, stopped at a light downtown headed to the freeway entrance ramp. When the light turned green, I accelerated and the engine roared beneath my foot. I could not even travel through the stop light. The Xterra would not go forward or backward. Had I made it to the freeway and been traveling at 50 - 60 mph in heavy traffic, and accelerated to find I had no power - no acceleration, I (and others) could have very easily been injured or killed. When my Xterra was towed to the transmission repair shop, they were very familiar with this issue and informed me that a class action had been filed and won, (and was already concluded) over this exact issue; however, the consumers in the class received a very small portion of the proceeds (approx. $800 at the high end). I am contemplating filing an action in small claims court against Nissan and the local dealer in jackson, ms, from whom I have bought 3 suvs in the past 20 years. I tell everybody I see driving a Nissan about this issue and have spread the word on social media. This is completely unacceptable, fraudulent, reckless endangerment by Nissan, and something needs to be done about it to make the consumers whole. I will never buy another Nissan.
