2 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/24/2018

Vehicle transmission started to slip and now, the transmission does not engage at random times causing power loss while in motion whether driving on highways or city streets. This problem is not worsen or aliviated by turning or breaking. The transmission will eventualy engage after slowing the vehicle down and later accelerating. The vehicle was brought to a trained mechanic who found that the coolant fluid was entering the transmission and oil was mixing with the coolant fluid. A second opinion from another trained mechanic verified the same problem.

4 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

I purchased my Xterra back in October of 2008. It hasn't given me any significant problems until now. I have taken it to the same certified Nissan dealer/service center for just about all of the scheduled maintenance and so on. Even though this issue was known by Nissan, not once in all of my many visits to this service provider, was I warned or notified of this condition or the class action lawsuit that was in progress which has since been closed (October 2016). Also, being that my vehicle is just over the lawsuits agreed upon mileage allowed for any compensation from Nissan, I wouldn't qualify to receive anything at this point. So now, here I am with a vehicle, that I planned to keep for many more years, either having to basically junk it, or pay upwards of $7000 in repairs (according to the Nissan service center) to replace the transmission and radiator. I am between a rock and a hard place. I feel that I should be compensated in some way for this. If I were notified of this problem around the time that it first came to light, I would have at least had the chance to trade the vehicle in, instead of being stuck here with a vehicle that is essentially worthless. Not only could they have been considerate enough to notify me as 1 of many purchasers of a Nissan vehicle with this issue, but you would think that during service visits they would keep an eye out for an impending issue such as this. After research of this problem, I found that my vehicle was displaying symptoms of this condition arising months ago (the heat not remaining warm when in idol position). Also, I just had a oil change 2 weeks prior to having them check this problem out. I do know that this issue was already present then, because I had a couple of instances where it seemed that my transmission was slipping, and not only that, but the engine light was on.

5 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

While my wife and grandaughter were driving our 2006 Nissan Xterra on a highway, the transmission started to slip, not allowing the ability to maintain the proper safe posted driving speed. My wife had to pull over on the side of the road during heavy traffic, exposing both her, and my granddaughter to a safety hazard. The vehicle had to be towed, while they waited on the side of the road, getting picked up by a family member. Subsequently I learned of a known defect in Nissan radiators that fail, and leak into the transmission, causing it to fail. Reportedly, it has been recognized the failures commonly occur around 90,000 miles, or a little over 2000 more miles than when this incident occurred. We were never notified of this potential defect, which should have involved a recall/warranty repair, rather than subjecting me, and my family, to this safety risk. I would assume there are many more vehciles in this same unsafe state today, awaiting the same development that occurred to my family. This matter needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Thanks.

6 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/20/2016

125k much like several other customers the transmission started slipping and have been informed that the vehicles contains a defective radiator cooler tank that ruptures and forces coolant into the transmission through the cooler lines. When the coolant mixes with transmission fluid it creates a frothy liquid that eats valves, erodes seals and causes corrosion. Waiting to see what cost would be to replace system but have been told its around 5k and the car is not even worth that!!.

7 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/18/2015

Car transmission is slipping and stop moving. Transmission oil leak. Radiator water leak.

8 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

Transmission slipped and couldn't accelerate, my 16 year old daughter was driving, about ran over by trailer. Researched and found out this is a known problem that Nissan isn't taking care of.

9 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

5/29/14 check engine light came on,transmission slipping. Diagnosed as radiator contaminated with transmission fluid, replaced radiator, drained coolant, flushed multiple times. 7/12/2014 on family vacation out of state engine light came on,transmission slipping, low transmission fluid. Filled fluid by beach ready auto. 7/15/2014 check engine light again on interstate highway traveling at 60 mph total transmission failure. Rebuilt transmission put in out of state,8 days missed work, airline ticket home. My expenses for this defect in design by Nissan is $5900. The fact that there has not been a recall initiated by Nissan is completely unacceptable and dangerous. A failure on the company's part to stand behind their products wrong , but knowingly allowing their product to endanger people's lives is inexcusable.

10 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/06/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that the gears slipped intermittently while traveling at any speed. The failure recurred multiple times. An authorized dealer was notified of the failure more than once, who repaired the radiator and transmission to no avail. The contact had heard a humming noise when changing gears and also experienced the fuel gauge providing erroneous fuel level readings. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number: 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline) but the local dealer and manufacturer both stated that the vehicle had exceeded the one year time frame to have the recall repair performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,000. Kmj.

11 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the transmission began to slip gears before becoming inoperative. The engine was turned off and upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the transmission fluid had turned into a dark brow, almost black color. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

12 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

My transmission began slipping all of a sudden and I lost all ability to accelerate despite my ability to rev the engine. Luckily I coasted into my local "kwik kar" at the end of the street. They looked at the car and informed me that they believe the radiator is leaking into the transmission and that both the transmission and radiator would need to be replaced to make the vehicle functional again. Had this occurred on the highway my life would have been in serious danger.

13 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

Coolant fluid has gotten into the transmission making it slip or is no longer working.

14 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Transmission started slipping in high gear, because of a leak from a known faulty radiator letting coolant into transmission.

15 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

On 9/13/2013 I took my vehicle to alan webb Nissan to investigate some transmission slipping that I had experienced the previous day. On 9/16/2013 I was informed that my transmission had become contaminated with radiator coolant and my transmission and radiator would have to be replace at the cost of $5300. 00 plus applicable tax. I was further informed that this was known problem with this generation vehicle but that Nissan only provided repair assistance for vehicles with less than 100k miles on them and I was therefor required to pay the full amount. It was only later through online research that I discovered that a class action lawsuit had been the only reason they provided any repair assistance. I also noted that the vastt majority of reported cases were for vehicles over the 100k mark. 1. If this was a known defect that affected millions of vehicles why wasn't Nissan forced to perform a recall and replace the radiators. 2. Why was I not as a minimum informed of the defect when I purchased the vehicle with 74k miles on it. With less than 80k on them Nissan would repair the problem at their cost. 3. If the problems are not as a rule happening to vehicles until they go over 100k miles then why cap the assistance requirement. 4. Now that it is recognized by the courts as a known failure why are the consumers paying anything to do these repairs whn it could have been avoided with a $200. 00 radiator and an hours labor. I find this very dishonest that Nissan was not forced by the courts or the NHTSA to do a full recall or disclosure to owners. If so many vehicles are on the road which can have a major transmission failure at any time why hasn't the NHTSA forced Nissan to do something about it? this may not be as hazardous as fuel tanks rupturing but I would think that a vehicle that has a transmission failure at highway speeds should be of concern.

16 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

Transmission started to slip abruptly and with imminent failure. Checked complaints and discovered a well known issue with transmission/radiator fluids intermixing due to a failure in the transmission cooler. Mechanic verified this was my problem as well. Nissan quoted $8500 repair. Service adviser at Nissan north (ohio) confirmed that this is a very common problem. Apparently Nissan acknowledged this in a class action lawsuit settlement in 2012 but did not notify any of the owners of potential failure without any previous symptoms. I had my car serviced at the dealer 3 months prior and they did not notice/notify me of any potential issues. Transmission failed on a trip to new york. I'm looking at a repair bill that potentially exceeds the value of my automobile. Nissan has a moral and a implicit obligation to notify owners of problems such as this. This should have been a recall, as it would have prevented the failure and saved numerous owners outrageous repair bills and possible loss of vehicle.

17 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

Transmission began slipping causing the vehicle to lose power at freeway speeds, usually 60-70 mph. Inspection revealed a known problem reported for Xterras, pathfinders and frontiers, 2005-2010; radiator leaked coolant into the transmission causing it to fail. This resulted in a $6,000 repair with no coverage from Nissan.

18 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/26/2013

My vehicle at time of purchase had 91736 miles. As I was driving it home it would not allow me to accelerate after 60mph and the rpms reach over 4500. I was in the last lane when traffic started to clear. I could not accelerate and go at the speed of traffic. I had to put my emergency lights on and get over to the last lane. This is a reoccurring problem when I drive the vehicle. At times when I try to accelerate the vehicle reaches high rpms and it lunges forward until it settles in. I took it to two different mechanics and they both told me it was the transmission slipping and the radiator leaked water and that is what made the transmission start slipping. I don¿t want to drive the vehicle with my children because I was scared that I will be driving 65mph and one of a sudden loss of speed and be in an accident because I can¿t accelerate. The mechanics gave me a quote f $2400 for a used transmission and $3900 to rebuild the transmission and an additional $250-300 to replace the radiator. I am a single parent with two children and I cannot afford to repair the vehicle. I am not driving the vehicle in fear that I might damage it more. I should not have to repair it at my cost, this is a manufacturer defect. I am asking for there to be an investigation and a recall due to all the similar complaints. I should not have denied the right to drive my vehicle and use another vehicle because there has not been any recalls to fix the situation. The vehicle transmission and radiator should be fixed by Nissan at their expense.

19 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

Vehicle maintained meticulously. Fluids changed regularly. Drove mainly highway miles in the winter. At first it beagan having trouble starting. Then woulnt start at all. Not a click, not a crank. Then took it to local shop with good reputation. Had it for 7. 5 weeks before it was 'fixed. ' drove it for the first time in 8 weeks & transmission was thumping hard as it up-shifted & seemed not to keep up on down shift. Upon initial light acceleration tranny/gears began to slip making a loud/harsh vibrating/shuttering sound & feel. Took it home immediately. When I checked radiator the dreaded grey sludge poured out. Nissan has horrendous customer service. I'm told I need a radiator & a new transmission. Totaling over $6100! Nissan needs to for once do the right thing & do a full recall. This is my second Xterra. I had a 2005 as well. I also owned a 2005 maxima. That's brand loyalty but I also used to make $200,000/yr, live in my dream home, etc. . . Thru divorce & illness I'm homeless just trying to survive. I had planned to sell the Xterra & buy an inexpensive fuel efficient car so I could bank the balance & begin trying to save again. I have no vehicle now or $6100 for repairs that r obviously due to a design flaw or flaws.

20 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/03/2013

I am very disappointed and disgusted with the way Nissan has handled this problem. My Xterra 2007's transmission did not go bad until it reached over 120k miles. My wife was driving cross country with my children and all of the sudden she felt the gears slipping while driving in a major interstate. Luckily she was able to drive home safe. I found out shortly after this almost catastrophic experience that there were many complaints regarding Nissans transmission problems. I guess there was a class action lawsuit that only covered vehicles under 100k miles. Why is Nissan only providing assistance to vehicles under 100k miles if there is a there is a defect in the transmission coolant. They should cover any transmission problems regardless of what the mileage is. I took my Xterra to aamco because they charge be thousands of dollars less of what a Nissan dealership would have charged me. I have been a loyal Nissan owner since 2003 and will never buy a vehicle from them again. In fact, I have convinced friends and families not to buy Nissan vehicles because of the poor service that they have provided.

21 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

Driving on freeway and transmission began to slip and within a matter of seconds had absolutely no power to wheels. Have researched and found issues with this vehicle regarding coolant line for transmission failing and leaking anti-freeze into transmission. Was wondering why it is that there is not a recall by Nissan for this issue as it is undetectable, unpreventable, and expensive.

22 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

Strong vibration and noise from the transmission and the transmission slips for time periods up to 10 seconds. Happens repeatedly. Upon later examination by the dealership, they say that radiator leaks coolant into the transmission causing it to be destroyed and requiring replacement.

23 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/05/2012

My 2005 Nissan Xterra started having some problems early in July. On or about July 5 I was pulling onto highway 30 in montgomery illinois. There was oncoming traffic. I pushed the gas and proceeded to merge on to the highway. The car moved very slowly almost causing an accident. I pulled over out of traffic and rested car for approx 5min. When I began to accelerate again the car performed normally. I took to a mechanic who stated that the radiator fluids had mixed with the transmission fluids causing the transmission to slip and fail. After hearing this I went online and observed that over 500 people have also experienced the same problem and that it is a defect in the manufacturing of all 2005-2010 trucks and SUV's. I have asked Nissan to repair my car at their expense since it is a problem they knew about. They first stated they did not send me the original info on this problem because they did not know I owned the car. This is not true. They had previously sent me information about a tow bar issue/recall and a Nissan dealer in san jose CA fixed that problem. I believe that Nissan intentionally did not inform owners because they wanted the mileage to exceed what they were offering (80,000). Had I known I would have had my truck looked at long before the mileage expired. What happened to me could happen to a family and if they were to pull into ongoing traffic an accident would certainly occur. This is very dangerous and Nissan needs to do the right thing. I appreciate you opening an investigation on this and hope you get results before someone dies.

24 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/21/2012

Transmission slipped while driving, then would not shift at all. Had to be towed. Transmission was rebuilt, but goes into "limp mode" after a few miles of driving, with a strong odor of hot fluid.

25 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

Nissan has a confirmed problem where coolant from a faulty radiator component leaks into the transmission and causes slipping or won't shift to overdrive. They have extended the warranty out on the radiator to 80,000, but are hesitant to commit on the permanently damaged transmissions. A flush won't solve the problem. I was merging in city traffic and had a upshift failure where it just vibrated almost causing a accident. The initial condition is dangerous, and Nissans unwillingness to commit to replace the terminal transmissions even inside the 80,000 extension seems like throwing a risky and expensive situation on the customer. Very disappointed in Nissans sheepishness, expected more on a well publicized and documented concern. I feel this is a dangerous situation.

26 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

My transmission starting slipping. The problem was that the radiator cracked and allowed anti-freeze to leak into the transmission. Our winters are very snowy, icy and cold leaving me without heat and in a dangerous situation in wintery conditions.

27 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/19/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated the vehicle started making a rumbling sound after having the oil changed at the dealers. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was told that the transmission was slipping and coolant was leaking from the radiator into the transmission. The vehicle would need both the radiator and the transmission replaced. The failure and current mileages were 85,000.

28 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/27/2011

In March 2011 my wife was driving my son home and the Xterra began to shake as if she was driving on rumble strips. I quickly scheduled an appointment at a Nissan dealer and in anticipation of the scheduled appointment, I googled 2005 Nissan Xterra, rumble strip. Literally dozens of web pages popped up revealing that a defect in the radiator was causing coolant to leak into the transmission, thereby ruining the transmission/radiator. The testimonials detailed my exact experience and also described instances where transmissions would lock-up while driving. I raised my suspicions to cochran Nissan in pittsburgh, PA, and they performed a full service check which confirmed that coolant had leaked into my transmission. Cochran explained that the transmission was salvageable, but that the radiator needed replaced which I later found out had its warranty extended to 80,000 miles. The problem was, however, that my Xterra currently had 101,000 miles, making me a victim of circumstance and the extended warranty of no benefit to me. Cocharan replaced the radiator and flushed the transmission at a cost of approximately $830. 00. Now in February 2013 again as my wife was driving (our two kids), the transmission slipped causing the Xterra to stall and lock up and again I am looking at a substantial repair costing well above the $830 previously paid. Nissan has known about the problem with the radiator/transmission for years (possibly 2007) and has done nothing about it. Damage resulting from a design defect is not something for which preventative maintenance from the owner could rectify. Selling a product with design and/or manufacturing defects to unsuspecting buyers that places persons in danger is unethical and Nissan should be forced to stand by their product and to do the right thing. Please help and protect the consumer.

29 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/21/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated was driving 30 mph when the transmission slipped. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was advised that the transmission fluid abnormally mixed with the radiator coolant. The radiator initially malfunctioned and caused the failure and the dealer advised replacing the transmission. The contact called the manufacturer yet the manufacturer did not offer any further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 84,000.

30 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 09/14/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated the transmission began slipping and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. The dealer advised that anti-freeze was leaking into the engine because the intake valve gasket was bent. The dealer stated that the valve gasket was bending because the intake valve and radiator were made of plastic. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 86,000 and the current mileage was 95,000. Updated 05/03/lj.

31 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

I drive a 2007 Nissan Xterra at 41000 miles the clutch in my standard transmission started to slip. I took it in to the dealer (I purchased a 60,000 mile power train warranty) they charged me 135$ to remove one easily accessible bolt and tell me my clutch was bad (I told them this before I handed them the keys) and not covered by warranty as it is a ?ware part?. As the clutch is part of the power train it should have been covered. I was able to drive the car 40+ miles to my garage but had to buy an aftermarket clutch after researching and finding the factory part is defective and many have had it go bad after 10,000 miles or less.
