4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 04/14/2012

Engine hydro locked when a crack in the plastic intake manifold allowed coolant to be sucked into the engine cylinders, causing the engine to lock up while my wife was driving it. Fortunately, no accident occurred, but this seems to be a very common problem due to what seems to be a design flaw by gm. We had to have the engine replaced, and the intake manifold, at a cost of $5,400. 00. We heard that there was a class action lawsuit because of this problem, but people were just afforded a short time to act on it, and we were not even notified. Is there another suit that we can be a part of? we should not have had to replace an engine with just 44,000 miles on it.

5 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

For several months we were noticing leaks from the car on the driveway. We knew from touching it was not oil. The car started to hesitate at times and feel like it was going to stall out. Eventually it did stall out and continued to do so, it always started right up though, so we knew it wasn't the battery. The check engine light went on when it stalled. We brought it to the shop and they ran a diagnostic and found repair codes p0300 and p0135, which caused the vehicle check engine light to come on resulting in random misfire and 02 sensor heater circuit malfunction. Followed diagnostic troubleshooting flowchart and found faulty 02 sensor and coolant inside cylinder#4. Upon disassembly of intake manifold to inspect system, found intake manifold cracked. Removed and replaced intake manifold assembly, front 02 sensor assembly and spark plugs with all new oem parts. Refilled coolant and bleed system. Rechecked operation, cleared codes. After further research we found that this was a common problem with this car and probably should have been addressed by gm.

6 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 09/29/2010

1999 Oldsmobile 88 plastic intake manifold cracked due to hot pipe routed near it (per the mechanic). This allowed coolant and oil into the engine. Engine is making bad clanking noise. Cost to replace intake, replace plugs, new sensor was $1096. It appears from reading arfc website that this is a common problem and manufacturers defect.

7 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1997 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 09/21/2008

We have had to replace the (plastic) manifold on our 1997 olds 88 three times in the last five years. This is obviously a manufacturer defect, yet no recall has been issued for this car (while recalls have been issue for similar defects on similar cars). We have spent over $2000 getting this problem fixed and that still doesn't fix the coolant in the engine which cannot be entirely cleared out without removing the engine and incurring other possible problems.

8 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 04/08/2007

My car was having some problems starting and staying started. It sounded like a back fire and wouldn't start back up. We checked the plugs and also tested to see if was getting fuel. Yes, the plugs were fine, and it was getting fuel. I then took off the ignition control module had that tested and that was fine. I was told then it was the timing chain. Replaced that, the cam sensor the crank shaft position sensor, valve cover gasket, the lower and upper intake manifold gaskets that were cracked, pieces missing, and covered in thick brown good. My car still will not start, and has water falls of water coming out the plug holes.

14 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 10/22/2004

Complaint received via e-mail. My car with a 3800 series 11 engine recently broke down due to a cracked upper intake plenum caused by the egr pipe. The shop performing the repairs said this was a very common problem that they have repaired often. I could understand other moving/mechanical parts that endure wear and tear failing, but this is a part that simply burned out. I like gm to stand behind this part instead off sticking consumers with a $600. 00 repair bill caused by their poor design.

15 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 08/03/2004

16 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 05/21/2004

I purchased a 1998 Oldsmobile 88 in March of 2003, I put new wiring on the vehicle approximately in December after I had the vehicle checked because the check-engine light was on. The check-engine light started coming on again and the car was using all the water about every 10 miles, I took the car to a repair shop where they told me that there was a problem with the intake manifold. After leaving the repair shop, I stopped by a store and was inside about five minutes and the car wouldn't start right away, I had to try starting numerous times before it would start. On my way back home the car slowed to about 40 mph and wouldn't go any faster, even with the gas to the floor; it would only get slower. After getting back home, the car wouldn't crank back up at all; it wouldn't even turn over. I bought the car back home that same day and checked the internet for any recalls on the vehicle and noticed that there was a recall in February 2004.

17 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Oldsmobile 88

22 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 11/12/2003

Gm has a plastic plenum/manifold on their cars that become defective after 60 to 70 thousand miles. Due to the heat that the manifold is exposed to, the part will than leak. When this part was made from aluminum it would not cause these problems. I have replace this part 2 times in 2 1/2 years. Gm will not help with the bills because I have over a hundred thousand miles. But the part only has 65 thousand miles on it. I have gone to 2 auto repair shops and all I tell them is I am losing coolant and they know what the problem is. They said they replace these often. They replace these so often that now there is a after market that this part can be purchased from. My husband is a mechanic and knows what to look for on our regular maintenance, and that is how this was found. If people don't catch this coolant loss in time they could blow their engine. If people are not aware of this problem how can they watch for it?.

23 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 11/03/2003

Automobile ruptured intake manifold. Gm then acknowledged through a recall that this was caused by a fuel pressure regulator and gm would take care of the repair bill. My olds did just this and my dealer said that the pressure regulator could cause the intake manifold to rupture. Gm refuses to help me. My VIN is 1g3hn52k8x4806381. You folk should make gm take care of this.

The consumer noticed the intake manifold had a crack, which caused fluids to leak out.

28 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 09/02/2003

Car was running rough, esp. On starting. Made appointment with dealer who couldn't look at it for a week. We realized it was losing coolant, but there was no apparent leakage under the car or hood, etc. Filled with coolant, drove approx. 4 miles then engine light came on and stayed on. Checked oil and it was over "full". Called the dealer back with the new symptoms and was told it was a common problem with this type of car to have coolant leak into the oil (then into engine) and it probably needed manifold work $600. --$700. Had car towed to dealer where they found the manifold did need to be replaced. In researching, we have found that this is a common problem in 88's and sometime results in engine fires. We are wondering why there hasn't been a recall and why would the manufacturer use plastic in engine parts!?.

29 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 09/01/2003

Fractured plastic (!) intake manifold (upper plenum) resulting in loss of coolant over the course of about four weeks until the problem was finally diagnosed. Had to have this problem analyzed and eventually remedied at a cost of around $700. 00 total. Why on earth is this crucial component plastic?.

30 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 08/11/2003

When starting the vehicle, the intake manifold had blewout and caused the vehicle to be non drivable. The dealer was notified. The "explosion" woke up the neighbors. There was smoke but no fire. Bby.

31 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 08/04/2003

Car has 55,000 mi on it, and the plastic intake manifold resting on top of the engine cracked, leaking all coolant into the engine. Vehicle was shutdown as soon as the temperature climbed to about 250 f. Problem was fixed by replacing the plastic intake manifold, and no other damage to the vehicle resulted.

32 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 06/14/2003

Plastic intake manifold failed and sent coolant through out the engine and exhaust system resulting in a very costly auto repair. The vehicle is a 1999 Oldsmobile 88 with 3. 8 v6.

33 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 06/14/2003

The intake manifold on mt 1998 Oldsmobile 88 failed recently. The plastic on aluminum intake manifold is very susceptible to corrosion. Apparently mine failed and all the water drained from the engine. The repair bill to get the car running again was $1838. I am told by several people that this is a common problem on gm cars. Because of the common occurance of this problem, I would like to think that a recall is in order.

34 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1996 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 03/17/2003

The intake manifold cracked and leaked antifreeze. Scc.

35 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile 88

Failure Date: 03/17/2003

The manifold on the consumers vehicle was replaced at his expense one year ago and now there is a recall on the fuel pressure regulator, which the consumer believed somehow affected the manifold. Gm stated the defect did not affect his vehicle. After the engine was warmed and started, it would take a couple of tries and then the vehicle would surge when starting. The fuel pressure was leaking. The vehicle continued to lose coolant.
