Failure Date: 03/09/2000

Engine/transmission whine reported to dealer at 31360 miles (dealer could not duplicate). Transmission failed at 40976 miles (engine revs rose and car slowed - on interstate at 65 mph), transaxle replaced and whine no longer present. Even out of warranty, Oldsmobile paid hafl of the $2800. 00 bill, but feel that failure at this mileage is totally unacceptable. Complaint to olds at their web site got a response that they are sorry, its out of warranty. Bearing in hvac motor failed at 34909 miles. Clunk in steering fixed by replacement of steering rack and interim shaft.

Steering column began making clunking noise at 8265 and at 11015 miles, intermediate steering shaft was replaced. At 16342 noises began again and at 19438, power steering gear assembly replaced and front strut bolts tightened. At 19545 clunk led to tightening of all control arm bolts. Clunk still exists.

3 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem

Intermediate steering shaft failed, causing a clunking noise. Yh.

4 Steering Gear Box Sector Shaft problem

Rattle or knocking felt in steering wheel. Intermediate shaft replace 3 years ago but problem has returned. Have also just had struts replaced as per TSB #010232002, this did not solve the problem. Dealer is hesitant to tackle this problem. Concerned that this may become a safety issue.
