5 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 05/05/2003

There are two problems which are occurring all the time: 1. The van smells of gas every once in while. There have been a couple of recalls regarding this matter and they have been performed on the van. Still the fuel smell is there. Have written to Chrysler, they only have one answer for this: you have exceeded the mileage requirement for warranty. I think this is a safety issue and Chrysler should take care of it. Why do they have to wait for somebody to get hurt before they will pay up? please help. 2. Windshield wipers: these have been a problem since I bought the van. They come on intermittently. Sometimes they come on when I am using turn signal, turning on radio, or just driving. Then there are times when the various speeds stop working, and the wipers only work at high speeds. Warranty work was performed a few times during warranty period. Since then, last fall the wipers stopped working completely. Took it to the dealer, they changed the body module unit and it cost me $650 to fix it. It worked fine for a month but since then the wipers are doing the same things as mentioned earlier, except they haven't died yet. Once again Chrysler gives me a standard response. They know wipers are a problem, and they won't fix them.

While the front transmission seal was being replaced, the mechanic warned me about the gas tank leaking gasoline. No visable puncture holes can be seen and the leak appears to come from the seem of the tank. He said this does not appear to be from normal wear and tear and to not drive the vehicle until repaired due to danger of explosion and/or fire. When michael stead Chrysler dealership in walnut creek was contacted, I was told on the phone there is no recall on the leaking gas tanks and that the leak is not related to the other recall on our gas tank assembly. We have also experienced the windshield wipers randomly comming on while driving. We had the switch replaced but the problem continues. Autoworld dealership told us that the manufacturer for the wipers has not made a replacement part to fix the problem and that if it was replaced we would just have the same problem.

The fuel pump failure (twice) is not only incovenient and expensive the 2nd time(not under warranty), but it also can be dangerous if it occurs at the wrong time, like during passing. The windshield wipers randomly turn-on is more annoying than dangerous. I do know a few more owners in central wisconsin that have the same problem. My sliding door electronic lock problem is a theft issue--the doors can't be locked when the locks malfunction-- and both sliding doors malfunctioned during the last year- again not under warranty.

27 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 08/10/1999

The failure mode of the wipers going "on" in the off position has been happening every so often for quite a while. This is not a safety issue, just an annoyance. Just recently, the wipers have stopped working when we switch them to the "on" position. This is a safety issue - being caught in a heavy rain without wipers is very dangerous. I think you should initiate an investigation and make daimler-Chrysler recall these vehicles from 1996. Has there been other complaints for this problem?.

28 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

I have had 5 windshield wiper failures since about June 1999 (remember it has not rained much in maryland this summer so the wipers have not been used much). The condition lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. The wipers will either not start up or will fail during driving. After about the 5 or 10 minutes the wipers return to normal operation and so far have not failed after they start working. This appears to be a random event since I and the dealer have been unable to cause the problem to happen on demand. The dealer has tried to find wiring problems once but was unable to determine the cause. On 31 August the dealer is to replace a module to see if that fixes the problem but I will not know until after it rains again. It is unsettling to have your wiper blades fail while driving and could cause a seriouly dangerous situation if it happens on the highway.

29 Windshield Wiper/washer problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 08/01/1998

This van was purchased off lease with 18000 miles and less than 1 year old. After 1 year the vehicle was out of warranty due to mileage (36000). The wipers would go on and off at will. The dealer replaced the battery for $100. 00. The problem continued and eventually lights started to turn on in the interior of the vehicle on their own. The cruise control worked intermittantly. The air bag light came on intermittantly. The body control module was replaced. We didn't leave the dealership and the problem started again. The dealer ordered another body control module. It has been 3 and one half years and now the problems are starting again. The vehicle has stalled on several occassions. The horn does not work. The cruise control does not work. The air bag light is on continuously now. We do not have the $1000 dollars for replacement of the air bag. We understand that there are others with this same problem. Is NHTSA going to make chrystler right these electrical problems. I have read about engine fires due to electrical shorts. It certainly appears that we are not the only ones experiencing electrical problems with our minivan.
