Porsche 911 owners have reported 6 problems related to engine failure (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Porsche 911 based on all problems reported for the 911.
The vehicle lost most of it's power from an engine failure while traveling at approximately 60 mph on the interstate almost causing me to be rear-ended and a multi-car pileup. I was very fortunate to escape a major accident. An independent Porsche repair shop, eurasian auto, "bore scoring" on cylinder 5. Factory dealer, Porsche of birmingham, confirmed that diagnosis. The automobile only has 30,000 miles on it. The engine now needs to be completely rebuilt. I searched online and found numerous examples of this same thing happening happening to other owners of 911s with this model engine. It was used in 911s between 05 and 09. It occurs in both the 3,6 liter engine and the higher horse power 3. 8. Some reports say the failure is even more prevalent in the 3. 8 liter which is in the s version. My car is a 3. 8 liter s version. The problem is so prevalent that several companies now specialize in remanufacturing 05 to 09 911 engines that have suffered bore scoring and providing "fixes" so that bore scoring will not happen again. These companies include flat six innovations, rnd, and struttcars. If you look at any of these companies websites you will see an explanation of the problem and their solutions. Porsche is aware of the problem and has refused to address the issue. So that you will know this safety issue is not an isolated issue, I enclose several online references to the problem. Also I will keep the car garaged in it's current condition for 5 months if you want to test it.

At highway speed experienced brief, complete engine failure, then significantly reduced engine power for the remainder of the drive. This type of engine failure in a manual transmission resulted in rapid deceleration. Given this engine braking is a result of engine failure, the rapid loss of speed happens without brake lights alerting other drivers to speed reduction. Testing indicated a failure of the high pressure fuel pump according to Porsche technicians.

Vehicle's engine started to "rattle" at warm-up, then would go away, typical for an ims failure. Any longer wait may have resulted in complete engine failure.

Intermediate shaft bearing failed, causing catastrophic engine failure and loss of all engine oil on the roadway. Luckily, the car was stopped at the time.

It has come to my attention, that there have been a significant number of engine failures on 1998-2004 Porsche boxsters,911's, and 911 carreras. My understanding is that the cylinder blocks were porous on the earlier years and the intermediate shaft fails from 1999 up. In either case< the entire engine must be replaced at a cost of $16,000. I surveyed rwo Porsche dealers in metro detroit. One dealer has replaced four engines this summer while the other is currently replacing one. If you check various Porsche forums, chatrooms etc you will find that this is a fairly common problem. Porsche will replace engines on vehicles in warranty but will offer no assistance once the vehicle is out of warranty. I own a 2000 Porsche 911 carrera with only 20,000 miles and am afraid to drive it for fear of the engine failing and being stuck with a $16,000 repair.
