The contact owns a 2006 SAAB 9-3. While driving approximately 50 mph, the power steering failed. Immediately, the brake and accelerator pedals failed to respond and the engine stalled without warning. The engine failed to restart after several attempts. Roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for inspection. The technician stated that the failure was related to the idling within the computerized system. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer on two separate occasions for identical failures. The technician stated that the failures were related to the temperature sensor, which was replaced. The failure continued and the vehicle is currently being repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 40,550.

1) I stopped at home on the way to another appointment. There were no indicators that anything was wrong with the car. When I returned to the garage about 30 minutes later, the car would not start. It made no noise and gave no indication except it was mysteriously completely unable to start. The lights would still turn on, so it was not a battery. I paid to have the car towed to a SAAB independent repair shop. Luckily I was not driving the car when it stopped working; it was a complete fluke I had stopped the car for a few minutes. It had started fine the other 3 times that day. 2) the car would not start. It was 2 months out of the 4-year warranty. Luckily, I was at home and was not injured. 3) when the repair shop checked the car, they said the ignition cassette failed and had to be replaced. They replaced it. The car now starts. However, it is an expensive part and should not have failed so soon. I have only about 40,000 miles on the car. I have read statements from other SAAB 9-3 drivers that the ignition cassettes on their cars failed while driving, which lost them control of the car in bad situations. This is extremely dangerous and I consider I had a close call.

While driving on highway, auto shut down completely, no power steering, brakes, etc. Coasted to side of road. Car would not restart. Burnt electrical smell from engine. Car was towed to repair shop, where a failed ignition cassette was diagnosed. The "check engine" light comes on periodically since day one, in some cases for days at a time. I have asked about this problem at several dealers and have been told that it could be because of a loose gas cap and not to worry about it (SAAB USA claims that they don't know anything about this problem). The check engine light was on at the time of this incident, but because it comes on so often, I ignored it. $900 repair bill!.

At 75 mph on a major highway, my car simply shut down, engine would not restart. Had to coast across three lanes of busy traffic to get to shoulder. Car would not restart, burning electrical smell and smoke came from engine. Car was towed to dealership, where failed the cassette was diagnosed. Is still in shop 4 days later. Check engine light has been coming on for 8 months, have been told repeatedly by SAAB that it's because I am not tightening the gas cap enough. Check engine light was on, as usual, but I ignored it, as it's on half the time I drive the car. Dealership seemed to know immediately that the cassette was blown. This defect needs to be remedied. Very dangerous.
