SAAB 95 owners have reported 4 problems related to automatic transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I am experiencing a transmission issue with my 2002 SAAB 9-5. Judging by the number of mentions I have seen in online forums, this is a pretty wide spread issue. The SAAB TSB that relates to this issue is 440-2497, October 2004. My local dealer has advised me I need to foot the bill for a new transmission valve body. I believe this should be a recall issue. It appears very similar to the explorer/mountaineer valve body issue that was elevated to recall status a few years ago.

2003 SAAB 9-5 aero transmission leaking directly through pores in metal casing (not seam or gasket) at less than 51000 miles (less than 1000 miles over warranty) requiring full transmission replacement. SAAB USA offers to pay one third ($1700) of $5100 estimated cost. Although car had been in a wreck when it was about a year old, this could not be related. All recommended maintenance was performed by the dealer at or before the prescribed mileage was reached.

About 6 months after the SAAB specify transmission fluid change, my 2001 SAAB 95se wagon with 66,363 miles has developed the below problem. Approximately a mile to a mile and half after driving 20-40 mph, the car wouldn't move forward while the engine was running fine. Turned the ignition off for 10 minutes, restarted the car, moved about 100-200 feet, the same symptom happened again. The car was towed to an indy and then to a dealer. Indy found code p0730 but the dealer was not able to duplicate the same. Dealer charged over $100 and said the car was fine after allegedly test drive "10 miles". We picked the car. After a mile of slow driving, the same symptom developed. Without finding out what's the cause of this problem nor had they opened the transmission, the dealer concluded that I need a new transmission. SAAB USA was informed and it was SAAB USA directed me to the dealer. Now they want to close the case, without any assistance.

Transmission died at 70,000 miles, with no warning, causing brakes and other components of the car to fail, nearly causing an accident on a major thoroughfare. The car was smoking all the way home and I barely made it. I was shaking by the time I got out of my car.
