I purchased my 2004 SAAB 9-5 in 2023. I was under the impression that everything was running and that drivability was proper. When I attempted to drive the automobile it would start, idle 7 minutes and stall. It would not start again for about 35 minutes. I tried to use it, and this behavior continued. Often, in traffic it would stall while I was moving at low speed, and moderate speed: without warning, it cuts out and won't start for 40 minutes. I have spent money with my mechanic, over $1,000. I personally bought many parts: maf sensor, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, and fuel pump. I replaced the coolant sensor. After all this the vehicle still stalls 5 minutes after warmup. If it drives to warm up, it stalls and won't restart for 40 minutes. After I replaced the crankshaft position sensor, (cps), it has never restarted. I bought 3, one a bosch branded model, and it has never restarted. Many other drivers complain in forums, like SAAB forums, that they are experiencing the same problems. As you know, stalling at highway speeds can cause death. Clearly the problems with the SAAB motorcars, produced, owned, and sold through general motors, are something that poses a hazard, and should be repaired at gm dealership's expense. P. S. The vehicle's immobilizer device has caused my vehicle to not start at all. The key fobs have stopped functioning at all. I replaced the batteries, and they won't connect to the engine. The vehicle will crank, but no start. Battery runs down, with crank, but no start behavior. Can general motors either: 1. Replace the entire engine, 2. Repair the "stall, no restart" situation, 3. Moreover repair my seeming to be, "anti-theft system, no start" situation, called dice/twicesystem, 4. Turbo malfunction at a cost of $455. 00 and also engine filter box. Vehicle still not running correctly. Will only go at speed of 25 mph. Repaired on 03/27/2018. Started out smoking all over the place from exhaust. Was told turbo went bad. I think a lot of these cars have this problem as I read on forums(SAAB,). That I have since joined. The SAAB has 139,000 miles. . I was driving on a city street at speed around 35mph. Started to smoke heavy, but once out of city as long as I drove 50 mph on highway smoke was dispersed from wind and made it home but when stopping for red light would buck and try to shut off. Smoke not good for environment. . . . . .

My 2001 SAAB 9-5 has been experiencing a check engine light for awhile on and off. The vehicle will sometimes stall randomly and not start until engine cools down. The codes for cel lead to direct ignition. A previous recall on these vehicles, one my vehicle received. I called dealer and they said seeing as it was already taken care of once nothing can be done. I know I will to have to get it fixed to pass emissions testing due to faulty direct ignition. Not to mention how unsafe it is if it stalls.
I just bought this car. The check engine light comes on indicating a serious problem. I had the error codes checked. They are p1312 and p1334. These codes indicate a problem with the "dic" (direct ignition controller). Earlier models were subject to recall. There is apparently still a problem. I keep clearing the warning signal, but it keeps recurring.
Unknown- direct ignition cassette unit has been replaced three times. Each time of replacement the actual part has melted, burned out causing the car to automatically shut down. The car only has 72,000 miles. The part is melting again making this the fourth replacement in a 3 month period. Engine - exhaust manifold/catalytic converter needs to be replaced and all SAAB authorized dealers in northern CA. State they are unable to get part due to being on back order and no idea when the part will be available. But I was able to find the part out of state in chicago at quality auto parts.

While traveling on freeway, ignition suddenly shut off and car lost all power. Had to steer to the side of the road without power and then restart car to continue.

I was driving the car when suddenly the car when dead while I was driving it. I was lucky that I was able to restart it and there was a gas station right near by. It did not start up normally and was very sluggish. I was in the middle of traffic when this happened but fortunately not heavy traffic and in the right lane. It was very scary. They towed my SAAB to a SAAB dealer for me who had to install a new ignition. This happened about 4-5 years ago on my SAAB 2003 9-5 station wagon which was built by gm. I believe it was built on the same platform of one of the cadillacs that is under recall.

Car shut off twice while driving on highway. Each time I was able to pull over to shoulder and re start. I took the car to SAAB dealer and they could no find anything. I later took car to another SAAB dealer and they installed a new device (believe something to do with computer) and said that if that did not take care of problem, they did not have an answer. There were no further issues until maybe 2 years later, also shut off while coming off a ramp but that may have been due to low fuel according to dealer (my fuel was low). There have not been any further incidents.
All of these repairs in about a two year period: abs module, oil cooler, throttle body, upper radiator hose, and both dic cassettes. This is completely unacceptable for what was originally a $40k car. I have loved SAAB's since my childhood, but this one car has completely turned me off of them. First the abs module went, had it rebuilt ($150) and no improvement. So I bought a new one ($350). Then just after that the throttle body died ($450). Then just a few months later the oil cooler ($1100) went out. It ran smooth for a short time, but then both dic's died at the same time ($850). It is time for this car to go away, and I will never buy another SAAB. Why is there a recall on the dic for all subsequent years, but no the 1999's?
thank SAAB!!!.

2002 SAAB 9-5 has had failure of headlight bulbs at a rate of one or two per year from the very first year I have owned this car. No other bulb has burned out in the past 8 yr. A local garage mechanic told me it was related to a faulty front electrical harness in the SAAB but the dealer said this was not a recall, even though it has been a problem from the first year of ownership. Now I have 2 headlight bulbs burning out within one day of each other -- one high beam, one regular. Is there a recall of electrical harness on Saabs to correct frequent headlight bulb burnout? so far I have just been replacing the bulbs at $50/bulb at the rate of one or two per year.

Car runs perfectly and at highway speeds will randomly stall. If you can manage to not get into an accident the car will start right back up after you turn off the key and restart. Sometimes every couple of miles, and can go several miles without the stall. Seems to only happen at constant speeds. This is a very dangerous problem. Diagnostic codes are p1230 and p1261, but I think these are results of the sudden stall, and not the problem. Updated 03/10/09.
My check engine light had been on- my mechanic said there was a recall (which I verified on your site), yet when I took it to SAAB (and called), they said my particular VIN # was not covered. Amazing coincidence that the exact part that was recalled got replaced??!! please advise me what I can/should do. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
The check engine light keep coming on and I had a mechanic checked and the di cassette was failing, and causing engine misfire. My SAAB 9-5 is year 2003 model and only has about 70k miles. From what I read online, the part does have a limited and less than reasonable life. It was recalled for model year 2000 through 2002.
We have a complaint regarding recall 05v399000 for our 2002 SAAB 9-5 aero. Our idm serial number falls within those required to be replaced by the recall. However, SAAB will not replace it because our VIN # does not fall within their recall. Our idm needs to be replaced. This does not make sense. Our SAAB was delivered in germany (it is us spec) to a servicemember stationed there. We bought it used while stationed over there. No recall notices were sent to us over there. We just started getting recall notices once we shipped the car to the states. We had to provide our certificate of origin to SAAB. SAAB told us they had no idea our car existed until we gave them the certificate of origin (which sounds fishy). This recall was issued before we moved back to the states. Our dealers service department says our idm serial number and the problem with it fall within the recall. But SAAB will not reimburse them for replacing it.
Driving on thruway, cruise went off sudden loss of speed,ck engine light on. Engine stalled would only idle and shake wouldn't move. Had it towed to shop cleared code ran 1/2 day ok then ck light came back on, pulled it back into my shop. I searched internet for solutions pointed to faulty throttle body. I"m a certified for 34 year motorcycle technician so I took it off and disassembled it as I wanted to get to the bottom as it"s reason for failure. I discovered everything was ok except all of the wire insulation within the internal area of the throttle body had failed and peeled away causing a electrical short or spike. This is due to the use of inferior wire insulation not designed for it"s application. Dlr had new $457. 00 part in stock. I installed it,worked fine dlr inspected it. I left the old part with them for possible special warranty consideration with SAAB USA. SAAB declined warranty 01/02/07, I now have the old part. This car has also had 12 ign switch problems where 6 times it was replaced, the last one was 11/17/06 covered by warranty, also 6 headlights & 6tail lightbulbs replaced & counting not warranty. I have all work orders.
: the contact stated while parking, smoke was noticed coming in through the vents. After exiting the vehicle, it caught on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and filled out a report. A police report was also filed on the scene before the vehicle was towed. One passenger sustained minor injuries. The dealer has not been alerted.

In March 2006 my 2000 SAAB 9-5 wagon burst into flames under the hood and the entire front end of the car burned. The car was totaled.
I have a 99 9-5 turbo. Over the course of the past week, my vehicle has stalled on me three times. The first, I was traveling alone at 20 mph and the car stalled when I made a left turn into a gas station, leaving me vulnerable to ongoing traffic. An hour later, I had my children in the car and we proceeded to get onto the highway. The car stalled as I was going into highway traffic. Thanks to the skillful maneuvering of the other drivers, our lives were spared. The other occurred when we reached our destination. The car stalled as we pulled into the parking space. This led to the inability to turn sufficiently and almost hitting the neighboring cars. I have read various forums of fellow SAAB owners who have experienced these same life threatening incidents. It seems to me and many others that SAAB does not care about the safety of their dedicated consumers. We are not asking for hand outs, just the reliability and safety any one should have from a company that "allegedly" prides themselves on those things. I just hope that the next time I submit a report it doesn't include a death or dismemberment of myself, child, or another loved one because of SAAB's lack of integrity.
My car has only 50,000 miles. No warning, no escalation, just sudden. Sid l. C. D. Display is missing dots and lines causing unreadable display. Checked several "SAAB" discussion forums and apperantly this is a very common problem which damages the value of a $40,000+ car. I am afraid to find out how much this is going to cost to repair after seeing how many 9-5 owners have posted "home remedy" repair methods for this. Upper radiator hose- third one in fifty thousand miles from myself and the previous owner whom I knew. They all burst in the same place. Pressure relief cap tested ok. There is no aftermarket manufacturer of this hose that I know of to fall back on for a possibly more reliable product. And also, I again after searching through discussion forums discovered I am not the only one with this problem. Hood badge. Enamel cracked and flacked off of the hood badge on this garage kept car. Luckily I hear (because I'm not the only one) that these are cheap. My car has lost value to no fault of mine and I am going to have to have these things repaired (although they should not need to be) to regain that lost value.
I have a 2001 SAAB aero 9-5. I have taken this vehicle into the SAAB service department over 15 times trying to fix my problem. My vehicle shuts down while driving and many times will not restart. I have also had many electrical issues with my vehicle including but not limited to the electrical modules for the heat and air conditioning, heated and air conditioned seats not working and many other electrical modules going out.
March 25,'04, June 3,o4,June 10, 'o4;July 21'o4;Aug 2,' traveling along highway keeping up with the flow of traffic (65 mph) when a sudden and complete loss of power occurs necessitating emergency avoidance procedures to advert serious multi-car crash. Dealership, smithtown SAAB (530 east jericho tpke, smithtown,NY,117870) says it's fixed -5 times. Not. SAAB USA refuses to do anything despite my numerous calls. Car is a 2002 SAAB 9-5,with 27,000 mles, under warranty.
In the last week- June 2,2004 to June 9th,2004-my car, a SAAB 9. 5 has suddenly and without warning lost power , the emergency lights on the dashboard came on, and I had all I could to narrowly advoiding a three car collision. Is there a previous safety defect complaint on this car?.
While driving the vehicle 40+mph, the engine completely shut down without warning. The diagnosis, throttle failure. SAAB replaced the throtte body on 05/14/2004. Then again on 05/17/2004, the engine shut down in the midst of driving without warning. The engine light came on. SAAB has not been able to duplicate the problem. The car has proven to be extremely dangerous and unsafe to operate.
On two occasions, there has been a total lost of power to the car. The first time on a side street going about 25 or 30. After having the car looked at a SAAB dealership, I was told nothing was wrong with the car and sent on my way. Over this past weekend while driving on I-95 at about 70 mph it happened again while I was in the middle lane. No steering, no brakes, no nothing. Every person I have talked to who has owned a SAAB (model and year difference do not seem to matter) has experienced this problem. The mechanics are now saying that the problem is the throttle body, whatever that is. My general impression of SAAB's representatives (mechanics, personnel, etc. ) is that this defect is not a big deal. There needs to be a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed.
When driving at an undetermined speed engine check light appeared on the dashboard, then vehicle stalled. Consumer had informed the dealer about this issue. However, mechanic was unable to duplicate the problem. When the vehicle stalled, a burning electrical wire odor filled the vehicle as consumer tried to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealership and guessed without inspecting the vehicle that the cause was di cassette.
The contact owns a 2002 SAAB 95. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled on a major highway. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure was diagnosed by an authorized dealer who stated to repair the direct ignition cassette. The failure recurred multiple times after it was repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 48000.
On three occasions I have gotten a "check engine light" with a "transmission" or "coolant" amplifying light. On both occasions the car went into a limp mode as defined in the SAAB handbook. Two items, a temp sensor and thermostat were replaced without the problem being fixed. Today's fix is a programming update (ecm programming). Don't know if this will fix the problem but beginning to think the car has a basic flaw and don't want to take trips in it.
Dash board digital display (referred to as sid) inoperative and unable to report vital safety related information.
1999 SAAB 9-5 stalling problem. Sometimes when in traffic. Happened when traveling at low speeds (25-40 mph). Dealer kept car for one week then diagnosed problem as defective "ecu" which it replaced at a cost of more than $900. This happened many times in November and December, 2003.
On 13 occasions over the last two years, starting 9/13/03, the car's engine malfunction and automatic transmission fault warning lights came on and the car was automatically put in "limp-home" mode. In limp-home mode, the engine is depowered. This has happened when driving both on the highway and in the city, creating a very dangerous situation where the car is in the middle of traffic with little power to manuever. The dealership has attempted to repair this 12 times without success. Vehicle is leased.
2nd time the sid display has failed, after researching, this is a known and wide spread problem with SAAB sid displays for many years. Have contacted SAAB and so far will not replace. Car is not under warrenty, but can't get any information from car about warnings, errors, time, date, radio station.
On 3 separate occasions the car has completely shut down, losing brakes, steering, power, etc. The 1st at 70 mph on freeway, the 2nd on city st. About 35 mph and the 3rd in my neighborhood at 20 mph. SAAB has replaced 3 different things. The car is too unpredictable and unsafe for driving.
The car has stalled twice without warning, on the second occasion the vehicle was able to be restarted, in the first instance the dealer replaced the d1 cassette becuse it malfunctioned but in the second instance diagnostic test did not reveal a cause for the shut down. Nlm.
