Four problems related to battery cable have been reported for the 2006 Saturn ION. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Yet one more ignition has failed. I had the recall done on the other two recalls. Yet, less than a month after the last replacement the key would not come out. I tried looking for the key release on the steering collum that on prior recalls they said was there. It is not. I had to pull the battery cables as before to get the interior lights off. I came out to the car about an hour later and was able to remove the key. I spoke to the gm rep who said they would replace it with another one (the same model, etc) and I'd have to come back into the dealership. I told them no, I had recieved unbelievable hidious service there since buying the car and with the other recalls. Was told to drive the hour and a half to the next nearest one. Again declined. I was told that if I took it to the shop I use they would not pay the labor. This is igniton number four now. I am taking it to the shop I use tomorrow and will do battle with gm afterwards.
This vehicle was purchased brand new and driven very little. Protected in closed in garage. Drove to colorado springs for vacation and went to visit relatives. Parked vehicle in front of relative home and the key couldn't be turned to shut off the car. Fortunately there was a neighbor of my relatives that new how to shut it off by disconnecting the battery cables. To start the car the cables had to be hooked back up. Drove to ferguson Buick GMC in colorado springs and they checked it. The tumbler came apart, won't turn off , replaced ignition lock. Was charged for housing kit (15857948), code cyl, cylinder kit (20869121), labor and cost of parts totalled $614. 22. With only 16, 607 miles from 2006 to 2012 this should not have happened. Today, November 30, 2012, I went to drive my vehicle and when I started the engine all the lights on the dash and message about steering off trac keeps flashing and it said something about steering fluid, brakes and the lights were going crazy. I am afraid to drive it so I drove it back into my garage. Couldn't drive it like that. Now what is wrong. This vehilce has been paid for since 2008 and only has 19, 000 miles on it. My husband bought me this vehicle as a surprise and little did he know he would get pancreatic cancer the following year. He wanted me to have a dependable extra vehicle. I cannot keep paying money to fix a vehicle that I am afraid to drive. May get stranded somewhere. I wouldn't feel in good conscious to even sell it to anyone. Not worth what he paid for it.
Every time fuel is slightly below a quarter tank the engine stalls as if the car is running out of gas and the cars drastically reduces speed with minimum power. Also, after the incident occurred I went online to research the problem and found out that the vehicle had been recalled for fuel pump problems as well as lighting irregularities. Furthermore, as I continued using my vehicle the ignition switch cylinder broke causing the key to be stuck and was unable to turn off the ignition of the car. Luckily, I have a stick shift transmission and was able to turn off the car by putting it into 4th gear and letting go of the clutch to turn off the ignition. Unfortunately, the car battery remains on and in order to completely turn off the car I have to disconnect the battery cable so the batter life is not drained.
I will give you what I sent to a consumer repairs office and the ftc: date = company name = Saturn/GMC company contact = customer service/roadside service incident = I got home from shopping with my Saturn 2006 Ion ii, and tried to turn the ignition off and it would not turn off. I tried to get the panel under the steering wheel off and had trouble getting it off, so I could get to the shift lock release, and couldn't find the plunger at first, and then it wouldn't move either like it said it would to get the key out. The key came out, but it still would not turn off the ignition and the engine kept running. I tried three times to talk with customer service and roadside service through on star and Saturn and got very little information of how to stop the engine from running. Finally, the last person at roadside service for Saturn helped me to remove the fuse 16 for the fuel injectors which cut the engine, but then didn't tell me how to remove the battery cable and it was still powered on. Thank god for a friend who came over to help me get the maintenance-free battery cable unscrewed, not un-bolted, like in older cars, to remove the battery cable, so that the power would not be drained by all the remaining power that was on. What is bad is that the so-called authorized service dealer for Saturn in my town is not open on saturdays. Saturn, at least use to have Saturday hours for service. Why isn't the government forcing GMC and Saturn to recall this defect. They get Toyota to do things, but for americans they do little!!! help government regulators! I have to take it in for repair on Tuesday and take off work. There is a tech bulletin referring to this which is 04-08-45-005d, I believe.
