My power steering failed, when I restarted the car it worked again. A few months ago I went to grey Chevrolet for a recall on the power steering. They replaced the power steering motor. Now they say that the power steering column has failed. Why wasn't that replaced in the recall. I see on line that I am not the only Saturn owner this has happened to. If gm has put out a defective product, and has delayed response to this for years after finding out about it, why do consumers have to pay for the repairs.

2006 Saturn Ion. Consumer writes in regards to power steering recall issues. The consumer stated the power steering failed, in her daughter's vehicle. Turning the wheel, required extra effort. When her daughter called gm, she was informed the parts were not available.
My car experienced power steering failure and is under a recall for power steering failure. The gm dealership said that the part to fix the steering is unavailable and may be unavailable for months but that I should drive it anyway. I have requested a rental vehicle because the recall notice says that my vehicle is at an "increased risk of crash" and that the problem could "occur at any time". The dealership agrees with me that the vehicle is unsafe but that they are under orders to not offer rental vehicles for this particular recall. Operators at the gm hotlines refuse to give their names or offer assistance other than comments of "work harder to steer your car" (nicole) and "at least it's still drivable" (dorathia). . . Gm's web site says that "rental cars are available when requested by concerned owners at gm's expense" but still no one will help me.

The power steering failed while driving down the freeway. The dash board indicated the failure. When I stopped and shutoff the car and restarted the power steering returned.
At random my car beeped and the power steering indicated on the dash and my car became hard to maneuver. Within a two week period my car has had power steering failure 4 times. First occurrence: I was making a turn from one road to another. Second occurrence: while coming to a stop at a stop sign coming to an end on an off ramp from the interstate. The third occurrence: driving on a 45mph road, approaching a curve. Forth occurrence: on the interstate traveling at 70mph with cruise control set with heavy traffic around me. Each time I had to either stop on the road, pull off the road to the shoulder or make due till I found an area to stop, to turn the car off and restart again, after restarting the car the steering became very loose and just as hard to maneuver.
Unexpected power steering failure three times in one day. Once while exiting the highway and twice while driving on highway. Was traveling in a straight line when failures occurred. Synopsis: my Saturn Ion experienced a power steering failure four times in one day. Gm declined to replace the steering motor because the vehicle mileage exceeded its "special coverage" limit by 9,000 miles. Event: I was driving down a mountain roadway, elevation 9,000 feet, at about 35 m. P. H. When an alarm sounded in my 2006 Saturn Ion. The dashboard noted a "power steering failure," which I had never seen before. The steering wheel froze, and I was only able to turn it less than a centimeter in either direction. There was no shoulder so I parked the car in the lane, turned off the engine, waited and restarted. The failure warning went away. I had no choice but to continue driving because of where I was. The same failure happened four times within 25 minutes during my drive before I was off the mountain. I believe it should be noted I was in constant fear of another failure as I drove the winding downhill road where quick steering was required. In June 2012, gm mailed me notification that this problem could occur. The problem happened exactly as described in "special coverage" bulletin 10187-2, but that bulletin states: "do not take your vehicle to your gm dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described. " I immediately contacted my local dealership, o'rielly Chevrolet, and took the car in the moment the dealer opened. Gm assigned me case number [xxx], and ultimately declined to replace the motor or offer cost assistance because I exceed the "special coverage" limit by 9,000 miles. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I was driving my car through town when the dash suddenly made an alert sound and a 'pwr str' light came on. My power steering instantly stopped working. I was in the middle of a three lane street and in the process of merging lanes, so the power steering failure almost caused me to run into another car. After I shut my car off and started it again, the power steering worked fine for about 5 miles before the message came back up and the power steering failed once again. I drive at least 15-20 miles through the city for my job each day, and it's a huge safety hazard for me when the power steering stops working. It has been failing at least 2 or 3 times a day since the first incident occurred. I drove to my parents' house which is 80 mile from my current home, and the power steering failed at least 7 times during the drive. I loose almost all of my control over the vehicle whenever this occurs, and I'm very concerned for my safety and the safety of the others on the road near me.

Car was parked on a slight incline. Hand brake was on. Turned on ignition and engine started. Put right foot on brake and released hand brake. Placed car in reverse and began to lift foot off brake. Car began to roll backward, but when I applied pressure to the foot brake to slow the car I found that I had no power brakes and no power steering. It took a great deal of effort to stop the car from continuing to roll backwards. By now the engine had stopped running and several alert lamps were lit on the control panel. Over several days before this incident, I had noticed intermittent and momentary power steering failures when I was driving at slow speeds.

While traveling at city speeds (approx 35mph), the vehicle's information center sounded a "ding" and displayed a message reading "pwr str". This occurred suddenly and without warning. According to the owner's manual, the message "pwr str" indicates a power steering failure, an indication confirmed by the fact that turning the steering wheel suddenly became extremely difficult, requiring a significant amount of effort to turn the steering wheel beyond 1-2 degrees from its present location. I estimate this effort would exceed the abilities of some drivers, given the sudden onset and difference in effort required to turn the wheel before and after this problem occurs. This has happened to me on multiple occasions, including while driving at highway speeds (55-65mph) and while traveling in a parking lot (5-15mph). Turning the engine off and restarting it shortly thereafter seems to correct the problem; the message is no longer displayed and the steering works as expected. However, I have noticed with the recent incidents that turning the engine off and on again only fixes the problem for approximately one mile of travel before the problem occurs again. To date, I have managed to avoid getting into a collision as a result of this sudden loss of power steering, however I feel that this is a serious safety problem that could result in injuries or deaths if the problem were to occur while the driver is actively turning the steering wheel (e. G. Turning, changing lanes, navigating a parking structure) or if the driver lacks the strength necessary to turn the wheel without functional power steering. It would seem this problem is already under investigation (NHTSA action number: rq10004), and I would urge you to have this component recalled as it is a serious safety concern.
Every few weeks while the vehicle is moving my power steering fails and it's very difficult to steer the car until stopped. This happens without notice and at different speeds, sometimes while the vehicle is sitting and other times when driving. When my girlfriend owned the vehicle gm did replace the steering column three times. I've owned the car for almost two years and this problem is still ongoing and it's very unsafe. Now along with the ignition recall I feel that this vehicle is not fit for use on public roads. If there is a solution to get this vehicle off the road I would like to know about it.
Power steering has failed. I have seen several other people of line stating the same thing on their Saturn Ion 2006. We need help getting gmac to pay for this. I can not drive this. It is too difficulty for a female to use.
