2006 Saturn Ion - power steering failure. Occurs intermittently with no repeatable pattern of mileage, time, speed, etc. Chime sounds and pwr str apprear on the dashboard display. At that point, the power steering assist no longer works and steering becomes difficult. . . Especially at low speeds and cornering.
2006 Saturn Ion power steering failure. Intermittent loss of power steering. 1. Was working normally, then just stops working without warning. Pwr str indicator comes on to indicate the power steering has failed. 2. Intermittently works then stops working. Failure occurs once per day to once per week. It doesn't seem to matter how long the car has been driven. Loss of power steering has happened after 5 minutes of driving or as long as 1 hour of driving. 3. Turning the ignition off for a few seconds to 30 seconds seems to temporarily cure the problem. Turn the car off. Wait. Turn it back on and the power steering works normally for the next 10 to 200 miles, then the problem re-occurs.
2006 Saturn Ion. Daughter highway driving returning from college, indicator light on dash came, power steering failed. She pulled over turned vehicle off, turned back on and it drove fine. Next day driving at a slower speed the same thing happened. This has happened several times since. Contacted authorized Saturn service dealer, they said they are aware of similar problems but after taking our VIN# indicated gm has not made a recall for our vehicle. To repair this at the dealership we are looking at $300+. I just spent over $200 six months ago on a problem I feel gm should also own up to. . . The ignition problem with the key sticking in the ignition and not able to turn the vehicle off. I know this electric steering problem is also showing up in other gm vehicles and for what ever reason they are only fixing a select few in a select few states across the country. I have read where there have been 14 accidents resulting in deaths tracing back to this problem. I feel my daughters safety is at risk. I don't understand why an american company would allow the safety of people to be compromised.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving approximately 45 mph, the contact attempted to make a right turn and suddenly the power steering failed to operate with the illumination of the warning indicator. Electric power assist steering failure. Every startup within 5 minutes of starting automobile electric power assist fails and car becomes very difficult to steer. Vehicle has not been fixed because of expense of dealership replacement of over 900 dollars.
Leaving a residential neighborhood I was traveling about 25 mph when my power steering signal chimed on. Instantly after I noticed the power steering went out, creating difficulty in turning the steering wheel. I continued the short distance to my house, not wanting to be stranded. The next day went to start my car and the power steering alert was gone. However in just driving less than a 1/2 mile down my street the power steering went out once again. I did not drive it again until I drove it into a local mechanic, and the power steering failed on this trip as well. My car is currently at the auto mechanic and I am waiting for an estimate. I was told it will most likely be pricey because it is an electronic power steering system. After research online I realize that this is happens to occur often, posing a safety hazard. My car has slightly less than 60,000 miles on it. Additionally, this happened only a few months after I experienced the ignition freeze-up that many have also experienced. Two very costly repairs in one summer is unfortunate.
Power steering failure in 2006 Saturn Ion 3 with 56000 miles.
The power steering in my Saturn 2006 Ion light comes on. After the light comes on, the power steering fails and I need to shut the car off and back on again in order to correct the problem. It happened on June 30th 3 times, July 1st 1-2 times and July 3rd 1-2 times. I had to get the power steering motor replaced in order to fix the problem. I found out that gm is recalling certain cars for the same exact problem and that the same parts in the cars they are recalling is in the Saturn. The Saturn Ion's should be included in the recall as well.

Every time I start my 2006 Saturn Ion, the power steering fails. I can restart the car either in motion or while stopped and the function returns, but then fails again after 30 seconds to a few minutes. The result is a vehicle which is very difficult to control especially at slow speeds. This could be very hazardous while making turns at intersections or in tight spaces.

While driving a 2006 Saturn Ion, the power steering suddenly fails after the sound of a small click. The dashboard chimes with the message warning pwr str. It becomes extremely difficult to maneuver the vehicle, but not impossible to drive it. More force from the driver is required to make turns. Turning and parking the vehicle are extremely difficult without the power steering. After shutting off the car and turning it back on the power steering is restored. At first the problem only occurred a few times in a week. After three weeks, the power steering fails constantly after 30 or 40 seconds of starting the vehicle. A fuse was replaced, but no change has occurred. The power steering continues to fail.

I own a 2006 Saturn Ion. Several days ago the power steering failed while I was driving. I stopped the car and restarted. The power steering re-engaged for approximately 10 minutes and then cut out agian. This is now a constant problem. In researching the matter, I found that this is a very common problem with this model car. I also found out that gm recalled the chevy cobalt and pontiac g5 for exactly the same reason. Why wasn't the Saturn Ion included? I have been informed by the local dealership that the repair will cost about $1,100 to $1,200. The car is still driveable but presents a potentially dangerous situation in that it is much more difficult to steer. I have called to schedule the repair because my car is in great condition otherwise.
Power steering failed while I was driving. Had to pull over, turn off car, and turn back on. Third time this happened.
My car is a 2006 Saturn Ion. The problem is that the power steering on the car will go out while the car is in operation. If the car is shut off and then restarted, the power steering will be operative for about 5 minutes but then die again. This process is repetitive. The power steering fails everytime the car is being driven over a distance of 2-3 miles. My cursory research shows that this is a common problem, and that it creates a grave safety hazard for the failure occurs while the car is on the highway. Every case I have researched (and there are many) shows this is happening between 30,000 to 60,000 miles on most Ions. Please help - the cost of the repair is anywhere from $1200 to $1500 dollars. I take my daughter to school in this car everyday and simply do not have the income to scrap this car and go purchase another one. I fully expect that you will do nothing about this since you are in the tank for gm and to busy chasing toyotas, but your own stated policy is too remedy any situation where safe operation of the car is rendered practically impossible. What could be more dangerous than operating a car that loses it ability to be steered while it is in motion. Please do your job and address this!! I beg. This problem has been reported and it is time to cure it.
Electric power steering fails within one minute of starting the vehicle. This makes the vehicle very difficult to steer especially at slower speeds. Nothing has been done to correct the failure.
I have a 2006 Saturn Ion, and the electric power steering has been failing for approximately 3 month. The failures started with no prior problems with the car since I bought the car as the 2nd owner in 2008. The problems started when the vehicle had approximately 57,000 miles. The electric steering will work some day for a couple of miles, and there are days that it fails as soon as the vehicle is started. I am able to correct the failure by turning off the car and restarting the vehicle, however, the electric steering goes out again anywhere from a few blocks to a few miles later. My wife has almost crashed several times due to the failures. I have checked the fuses, and everything appears in working order, but I don't have the 1200 dollars to replace the entire steering column.
Power steering failing & pwr steering error message displayed. Not consistent, started about 2 months ago but becoming more frequent this past month. Happens even while driving on highways (not consistent or due to turns). Must pull over & turn car off & restart. This has so far "reset" the power steering mode. Never know when it is going to happen. Speed/steering not a factor. Dangerous when passing & this happens!!!!.
I have been experiencing power steering failure every day since 2-16-10. When I start the car the power steering is working, then after a few minutes the power steering fails, the message comes up pwr str and it becomes increasingly difficult to turn the wheel.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact was traveling about 75 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the power steering failed. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. The vehicle restarted and resumed normally for ten minutes and the failure occurred. A local technician performed a diagnostic test and it showed "no codes". The technician advised the owner to replace the ecm fuse which he did but it did not correct the failure. The contact stated that the failure happened every time he drove the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000. The current mileage was approximately 46,000.
Power steering fails while driving. Driver info area gives pwr str message. After you shut the car down it will work properly and pwr str message goes away.
Power steering intermittently fails. Turning the vehicle off, then on will reset the power steering unit and the car will function normally for a period of time. The failure occurs every 10-30 minutes of drive time without regard to driving conditions or weather. Upon failure the vehicle immediately becomes difficult to steer and maneuver.
I was driving and the power steering unit failed making the car next to impossible to drive.
The power steering on 2006 Saturn Ion's will randomly stop working at any given time. Turn the car off and turn it back on and the problem is gone until the next time. This problem is well documented online through numerous blogs from numerous sources with the same problem. Highway travel should be considered extremely dangerous in this vehicle because the power steering failure around a curve could easily result in fatalities.
Power steering fails without warning when you drive the car. It happens on both long trips and short. It fails at various speeds. Pull over and turn the car off and when you restart it the power steering works fine.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving at various speeds, the power steering warning alarm would chime and illuminate on the warning panel. At low speeds, immediately after the alarm chimed, the power steering would fail and the steering wheel would become extremely difficult to maneuver. The contact would have to use extreme force to turn the steering wheel and maintain control of the vehicle. The dealer advised the contact that the electric assist motor failed and would need to be replaced. The dealer performed the necessary repairs at the owner's expense. There were no additional failures following the repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000. The current mileage was 93,000.
The power steering fails while driving several times during a single trip. I need to turn off the car and turn back on in order to reset the power steering error msg that appears on dash. . . Not long after that it fails again. There have been thousands of similar complaints on the web. The vehicle is a 2006 Saturn Ion 2. Dealer says its a computer chip in steering column. I have yet to get repaired due to outrageous repair costs. Saturn needs to issue a recall, and need to stop stealing peoples money while putting they're lives in jeopardy with a faulty steering system that fails at high or low speeds.
